  • Don't make these two big mistakes when you are applying for an artist residency, or are thinking about applying for one.
    1. Failing to do your research.
Research as much as you can. Start with the artist residency website and anything else you can find online. Then be a detective. Find out who has recently undertaken an artist residency there and look at their websites or social media, you may be able to find more images to get a sense of the place, or artists may have done a blog on their experience. Get in touch with a few artists that have been there to get direct feedback, this is essential. Research the application process and go through it with 'a fine tooth comb' to make sure you know exactly what is being asked. Tally up any questions you have and get in touch with the artist residency to find out more.
    2. Failing to get support.
This is what I do in The International Artist Program. Regardless if you work with someone like me or not, support is essential for most people. On a basic level, we want people to get behind us and tell us, 'that idea is awesome, you can do it!'. We want support from people with some expertise who have walked the path before and know what to look out for. We want support from people who are not in the art field, who can tell us if what we are writing is clear or not. Who do you know in your life that could support you in these ways?
There are many other potential 'mistakes' artists can make when applying for an artist residency, but in my opinion, research and support, are the biggest.
