A key point on the 'Does the world need my art?' question is that if YOU need your art and it enriches you, that's reason enough. Everything has a knock on effect so can still impact those around you. Finding meaning/ value that way is still important.

I would absolutely love to hear your complicated feelings on copyright laws! Because I feel so iffy about it! Like yes please protect people's ideas, especially small artists, but when Disney has this massive stronghold on rights to franchises it's horrible.

This! Especially given that most of what Disney claims IPR over was in the public domain to begin with!

@@KHAZimmermann wait WHAT!?? Did NOT know that! Like it's Disney so I don't know why I'm surprised, but damn this is icky. I wonder what the end goal is though? Like what if you succeed in owning all the IP in the world, then what? It just doesn't make sense to me

When you are listening and you hear your name haha!! I totally agree, my version of what you said is I always think you can't learn boundaries without communication. Boundaries are not an excuse to just cut out anyone who disagrees with you or annoys you, boundaries are the tool you need to communicate and only then when your boundaries are not respected cut them out. Also good intellectual boundaries is letting you have your view and me have my view and not feel like I have to change your view or you change mine!

As the eldest daughter in my family, I thank you for these videos that make it feel like I have big sister passing on advice. One thing on the topic of giving to organizations etc, I have found one thing I have learned more about in lockdown is the concept of mutual aid and how that differs from charity. Becoming involved in the redistribution of resources within my own community has made me feel a lot more connected.

    Dear Leena,
I just turned 20 this year and, as if it were fated, I came across your channel, which I discovered whilst searching for videos that analysed the importance of ‘Mamma Mia’ (admittedly one of my favourite musicals). After watching said video, and listening to all your fascinating insights, I became absorbed with your channel and all the enlightening topics you cover. Your outlook on different subjects is very eye-opening, and I am always positively impressed by the originality of your ideas. I have learned a lot from you and really look up to you. I LOVED this video... for a very weird reason - in the background of you talking about 'should I even make art' I can see the clouds slowly moving... and skipping. It's not a lot. Just tiny little jump cuts - but it makes me feel SOO much better about my awkward uhms and pauses when filming. Like, I had somehow just assumed that you were just a natural speaker and hadn't even noticed the cuts before when they stood out like a sore thumb to me in my own videos. But no, I don't completely suck as a speaker... I just suck at editing, and that's something I KNOW I can improve on :) So thanks, for the weird, so not the point, completely accidental reassurance

The snowy trees are beautiful! Makes me miss living in an area that has "real" winters. Thank you, Leena! I so appreciate your thoughtfulness, empathy, consideration of nuance, and humor.
The discussion of whether or not we should make art (a question I often ponder) makes me think of Sondheim's musical "Sunday in the Park With George," particularly the song "Move On." I would also add to Leena's response that the connection and conversation between art, artists, and just people and their lives are my favorite things about art. Add to the conversation. The more the merrier! There is always room.

I loved your point about needing more art and truth. It reminds me of How to do Nothing and how paying attention to something takes constant diligence and the will to keep finding new things to look at within the subject. Maybe by creating so much art we as a society can continue to keep our attention on the things that matter most.

i needed this soft energy questions answered in the snow today, thankyou leena!! on the issues question i would add that one of the best ways to pick what issue to devote time to is to go with something you know. So while I might think lack of inner city education or prevalence of gangs are awful in like Detroit or London or New York or something, I don't live anywhere near there, and while I think anyone tackling that is doing good work, i would be really bad at fixing that issue as i have so little experience of it and am so far away from that community. There's a lefty slogan which is just "think global, act local." And thats maybe a bit over simplified cause some things you have to act global on, eg planet stuff, but i think in general pouring the most of your time and energy into your local community is the best way to help the world because you understand the POV & you will be there to see the consequences of your actions, be that the local park being improved or be that the unintentional negative consequences of what you thought was a good action or be that the longevity of funding for a project - the more involved and on your doorstep an issue is the more you can be there to help evolve the conversation and make sure the project is doing what it said it would and tweaking it if needs be. so while theres many many important causes in the world its the ones that you already have the knowledge about and passion in are the places to start. /end ramble

Leena, every single video I watch of yours I've learnt from and really Really enjoy ! but also I also almost always hesitate to click on your vids - sometimes waiting until I've watched every other video I want to watch in my feed - this is because of what you title your videos (I'm always pleasantly surprised when your videos are Q and As when it doesn't indicate that in the title and rather suggests a topic I guiltily shy away from)
This is not to say my opinion is particularly important - of course you can title your vids whatever you want but i Hate the idea that other people aren't getting the info they really need from you for the same reason - I want everybody to hear the words you speak ! ! !

I’ve been wondering what your stance is on rating books with the star-system. On the one hand I do look at them myself to gage the general opinion on a book. On the other hand I feel like criticizing a work of art is so easily done as a reader, but so much more impactful for the author. I haven’t used star ratings before, but I’m considering only rating books I enjoyed and giving them the full five starts…
