They can sue them if they want to. They should give a 60 day notice for layoffs if you have 100 employees or so. But I'm sure Morphe's thinking yeah, stand in line.

No one remembers that one hospital that put a restraining order on another hospital to keep employees from leaving them for better conditions?
Like employees at hospital A wanted better, hospital B offered better. It's an At Will state so you can be let go at any time for any reason but you can also leave at any time for any reason. Employees told hospital A "This is whats being offered, match it or we leave on X date." They didn't match it so they left. The weekend they left hospital A put a temporary restraining order on hospital B, stating patient safety and care was at risk and told its employees to come back. Employees couldn't work at B because of the order so a couple caved and went back to A while others were like "You can't FORCE me to work for you and your sh*t pay!" The restraining order lasted 2-3 days (judge wanted everyone to just chill over the weekend) and then was removed because hospital A had no ground to stand on blocking employment of ex employees. They did however scare the existing staff into submission for a while with this stunt.

So I get the fact that they are closing all the shops or just have 4 or 5 open. The only thing that is really bad, that they didn't notify the people that work there. I would expect the international stores to be closed by the end of the year but probably earlier.

I've been in a position where I worked in retail and my boss just popped up one day to inform all of us that we were closing the store forever in a week, it's so scary and so terrible of Morphe. I won't ever buy anything from them again based on that alone. Not that I think it matters, considering that they haven't been even remotely relevant since like 2017. They'll be gone soon, and honestly the makeup world needs the fall of at least a few major brands, it's massively oversaturated, overpriced and repetitive. The age of semi-luxury and luxury brands is dead, I think. Excessive, dramatic makeup looks were largely a millennial thing, and we're all too old to bother now.

  • @Akursedtime

The world has certainly changed since the days of makeup guru relevancy. The pandemic shaped the minimalist lifestyle, along with the inflation and the economy. I even noticed in Sephora, it is not bustling like it use to. People are learning to spend on the necessities rather than retain large quantities at their disposal.
Also there is more criticisms towards influencers. Many partied during the height of the pandemic and their flexing of their wealth while others are struggling day by day also soured. Influencers and trends change. No one can stay relevant forever and now we are seeing influencers on smaller scales rather than large grandiose ones like with Jeffree Starr and James Charles.

The drama that each influencer faced affected the merch(aka whatever products that influencers face was attached to). Any time any influencer faced drama, everyone complained about the poor quality the products from the collab had. But before the drama, everything was positive about the products. It’s almost like fans/supporters will rant and rave about products their fav sells, until they no longer are their favs.

People kept on saying the beauty community is NOT dead, that just because influencers stopped selling makeup doesn’t mean beauty is not selling anymore. believe it or not, it might be going on that direction. With all the gas and grocery prices shooting up, and we are just recovering from the pandemic, people definitely redirected their focus. Instead of buying makeup and clothes, they shifted on buying actual necessities. There are LOTS of unemployed former morphe staff now, and not just morphe, some ulta and sephora are laying off people too. So… if people say that the beauty com is dead? it is in life support right now. Not dead but we’ll see.

I'm an old Grandma from Northern Canada. I've lived long enough to know trends, all tends, given enough time, eventually come to an end. The pandemic hurt all mall retailers, and Morphe is no exception. It is unacceptable and probably illegal, to treat their retail staff so cruelly and unfairly. It speaks volumes about their current financial position. They should unite and file a class action against Morphe for unfair treatment.

My mom gave me one of her morphs palettes and there are much better ones than this brand for a far better price, plus their makeup brushes were bunk.
You can’t expect to sell a brand on the backs of influencers. People get bored with that after a while, and using problematic gurus didn’t help in the slightest. Couple it with the pandemic and economic depression, and it just wasn’t sustainable

I know how this feels because I worked for Demos Restaurant in Alabama and they did us the same way. I noticed the last night I worked that the freezers were practically empty. It seemed weird how low we were on supplies and food. Even ran out of rolls. We thought maybe we didn't get enough on the truck. But then a few hours after clocking out, we received a TEXT MESSAGE that told us not to return to work and that Demos was permanently closed. We all received two weeks of severance pay, but still, two weeks isn't enough time to get another job. I was so upset. How can any company just do that to employees?!?! What if people lose their home, car, and more? It's just devastating. Idk how people sleep at night when they make these decisions. Personally for me, I'm not buying as much makeup anymore. I hardly ever wear it like I used to. It sucks that everyone is getting hit so hard, but realistically, once you have a few palettes, then you have every color of eyeshadow you could ever need. It was fun first getting into it, but now, it's just not the same.

I don't like how Morphe abruptly closed but most US employers are at will. They don't have to give warning at all. Employees don't have to give notices of termination either. People need to keep this in mind when taking on a job. You can be fired at any time and you can quit at any time, end of.

I also think the whole “self-love” and “self-care” thing has gotten bigger where ppl care more about skin care stuff than makeup

I always eyed their palettes when I'd pass by in Ulta, thought maybe I'd pick one up someday. Never did since I have enough makeup and now I never shall. 🤷🏼‍♀ I have a few eyeshadow palettes and the two I turn to the most are still plenty full; I don't wear makeup that much anymore either and I have become allergic to several different types of eyeliner the last couple of years unfortunately. I just find less and less reasons to wear makeup lol. I am a diehard KVD liquid lip fan though, I LOVE lipstick. They already dropped my perfume so I hope they never drop my two fav colours.

With the whole conversation of beauty content not being so popular anymore, this is SO true. Coming from someone who was in Junior high at the peak of beauty influencers (2016-2017), I personally don’t even do as much makeup as I once did. Now that the current makeup trends encourage a more natural look, beauty influencers have gone down with the makeup of that time. They can’t make money off of these sorts of palettes anymore when the trends contradict the style. Glam was SO important to my childhood, but times are changing.

Many brands like colourpop also have this disclaimer which is why a lot of palettes don’t include the word “eye” and instead will say “shadow” or “face” palletes

Morphe honestly doesn't deserve any support or business with how they handled their closing and screwing over their employees. That short of a termination/separation notice is SCARY when you are living paycheck to paycheck to provide for yourself or family. Just even imagining what their employees must have felt makes so truly sad. To do that DURING Christmas is even more heartbreaking. Morphe could have at least given their employees enough time to look for another job before laying them off.

To shed some light on a few things. If a store is in a mall they have signed a lease for a certain amount of years, if they want to renew the lease they can but it seems Morphe didn’t want to. Also it’s the same for stand alone stores (boutiques). Also in certain states it is law to inform employees of mass law offs (WARN letters). Especially in California, when you terminate an employee, you are required to pay them everything they are owed on their last day.
