Alright guys, this is it. In this video we ARE going to get that Dual Power Amp with Cassette Interface board all wired up and working the 1983 Bally Midway Journey Arcade Cabinet. We'll also talk about troubleshooting and fixing the HUM and BUZZ by replacing the tantalum caps. I also reflow the solder too.
After we get it wired up, we'll clean up the wiring with some zip strips, mount the wires to the sides of the cabinet, and then make a shelf for the cassette player using some angle iron brackets.
Also in this video I'll show you how to make an endless loop tape for the Journey Arcade Game using a TDK three-minute endless loop cassette. I'll also make a new Midway label for the tape on my printer!
We cover TONS in this video, ENJOY!

It's actually great that you make
Mistakes. Helps me understand better. Also, it's funny hearing you get all confused!
LOL! Thanks? :)
i found it hilarious that you were contemplating about accepting the buzz. It sounded attrocious, like bad dubstep. you must have been desperate at that moment! good job and i admire your dedication!
Yeah, can I accept it? :) LOL! NO I CANNOT!
Is this machine going to be the pride of your collection? Very nice machine, good job on the restoration..
Thanks, I am gonna be very proud of this thing when I am done! :)
Your gonna be the first one to show a real journey cabinet with evreything on it.
lol that spider at 15:40 in the background was helarius :D
it scare the shit out of me i was like oh shit theres a spider on my screen
Legend has it that the spider at 16:34 is still in the cabinet to this day.
Hey, John.
Just in case you haven't yet, you should give the tape heads, pinch roller and capstan a really good cleaning. That can make a world of difference.
Great video as always! Also loved "The Kill Screens" track you played in the video.
Take care, man!
That thing is almost done. Awesome! Also, that R Type looks sweet.
Man idk why but anytime I try to watch these videos in 1080p my computer phone whatever I try to watch on good connection or not the damn thing won't render so I always have to watch in terrible quality :( none the less love the videos I would love to hang out with you in your basement john! I love retro games just as much as you do :)
Just watched all these videos over the last few days really interesting to watch well done!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed!
That's one bust up phone. Wow, resilient model.
john popping two hour long vids? I'll need another cuppa tea.
These video's are so learnfull and way better than school! Thanks John!
Nice job John! Glad you got it working! It looks great!
The spider is the revenge seeking spirit of the Black Widow cabinet he's going to be ripping apart :)
I know this is an old video, but I had a guitar amp once that was making a very similar rumbling noise. If I adjusted the volume control I could faintly here the input signal getting louder and softer, but the rumbling was always at full volume. In my case it was bad capacitors in the amplifier circuit.
Another great video. Love watching how all of it comes together.
John...time for the simple green, you've got frickin spiders in the cab!
LOL! Eek! I'm gonna clean the heck out of the insides soooon.
Last time i fixed one of those weird contacts i just soldered the cables to the metal pins inside it, felt like that would give better contact then just pushing it in and hope it clamps. Worked perfectly fine too.
+Luzur Also, i was dating in the middle 90's and i never made a mixtape, so i guess it was some special american thing :P
So cool. Did you hear me humming along? Got it all working. Now do it again. TEE HEE>
Sometimes when I need to hold a wire down real quick, I lay a pair of pliers or an adjustable wrench on the wire to keep it from moving. I put the setup close to the edge of the bench so the wire is out in the open
You did a great job John!
John there are multiple 3.5 mm jacks on the player itself and one should be an audio out and that well essentially disable the volume control on the player and set the level to a normal listening level and let you control the volume from the pot only. Just a thought…
I looked, there is only one audio out and it's for the earphone. The rest are AUX in, mic-in, and Remote.
Wow! Tantalum caps in an audio circuit are usually a bad idea unless they are on the power to the circuit. Tantalum caps don't like reverse polarity and in the schematic you wouldn't expect that reverse or over voltage would be possible there, but I've learned to expect the unexpected in audio circuits...
Edit: I'd just replace the tantalum caps with bi-polar caps. 22uF 50v bi-polar audio caps.
Such a great feeling finding a solution to a problem, isn't it?
Aaah! You have a spider friend at 15:23 on the yellow board in front of your hands! Hey, this isn't centipede, SPIDER, this is JOURNEY, BABY - *Don't Stop Believin Starts Rockin Out*
Wasn't R-Type on the Super Nintendo, though?
Good video John, But I just noticed a little Spider crawling into the cabinet. hah.
Eek!
I don't have anything to share to help you with your problem, sadly. However, I have to admit that watching you screw around with arcade machines in your garage for an hour or so has become some of my favorite viewing when I get off work. I have no idea why. Any sane person would find this boring. I find it fascinating. Go fig.
BTW, you should get an Alien Vs. Predator machine as it's the best beat 'em up ever made IMO. =)
LOL! Thanks for watching. Glad you are you enjoying it. :)
Well done John, great job.
Congrats, almost finished. :D
John, TNT is in the middle of doing a Journey. Ask Todd if he has any tips for you. I think they are converting from Tape Cassette to MP3. Great work! I wish I could get my projects together like you do.
Cool, thanks. Dude, I am not going MP3. Why? I have the original equipment working. Much better!
Remember in an earlier episode there was shielding on the audio cables that went right next to the power cables? You extended the cables to make them longer (without shielding) you also said 'if there are problems in the future we'll come back to it'?
I haven't finished the video but one possible solution to fix the hum is to get a ferrite split bead and wrap the cassette player power cable though the bead as many times as possible. I'm guessing that's what's causing the hum is noise generated by the motor of the cassette player which then travels though the power cable and ultimately into the speakers.
the noise comes from the cassette player motor, because the PSU is bad, or its caps in the PCB, so each time the motor brushes conduct it introduce a peak that as is bad powered/grounded that filtered to the output signal.
No dude the guttural humming from the cassette player and the crickets! Next thing to happen should be the lights going off, the ground shaking and blinding beams of light coming through the window from the outside. Shadows like little kids cutting the beams towards the garage door. John weeping in fear, asking, "What's going on guys?"... ^_^
Nice work, John
"Are headphones this crappy?" Yes they are. I go through a couple pairs of them each year.
Right? same here it wasn't until I bought a pair of beats that I kissed that goodbye they are wireless
anyone catch that quality spider at 15:20 i don't think john saw it.
Congrats, it's almost done. :D
Getting MUCH closer.
Love your shows. I watch with my kid so sometimes we miss stuff, but did you ever replace that 100k pot with the proper 1k pot?
Yes, I did. I did end up getting a 1k pot as shown in part #11
we still have a buzz only from a different source Journey Arcade Game Restore Part #11 - Dual Power Amp with Cassette Interface Wiring Part 2 and its in Stereo!
Your the man John, keep up the good work
Thanks, pal! :)
I'm curious, when are you going to get back to the Major Havoc spinner light?
Today i learned how to count to 8 and 12. OCD John lol.
I don't mind the mic sounds. Sometimes us techs have to sleep on it to figure out the problem. I've mixed up 2.5mm and 3.5mm audio plugs before too.
Try adding ferret magnet loops on the audio line. Try plugging into self powered mp3 on cassette test.
Sometimes you got to "don't stop beleiving"
John,
What was the name of the Molex kit you got from Bob Roberts that you mentioned in your video?
He has a kit full of various pins and molex spacers. I am not sure what he calls it.
Is that Dave Matthews ? Awesome
John if you ever plan on selling that R-Type I call dibs!
I already have two people in front of you. :) Sorry!
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech NO! Oh well you know where to find me! Great vid, the cabinet is coming along nicely
normally rumbling sound are always ground or power supply problems in my ham radio i use a 600 ohms to 600 ohms transformer separate the audio ground from power supply ground, try your tape player with battery or separate supply to see if problem are from power supply
Did you ever figure out the buzz? Todd @ TNT Amusments just finished their journey restoration! Bally Midway JOURNEY Arcade Video Game - RARE! TNT Amusements
normaly if you tur 3.5 stereo jack in mono you need to put the white and the black wire together for ground and the red are the audio
Ok, I get what you guys are saying about the black and white together. I just rewired the audio jack. I'll let you know if it cures the issue. However, I don't think it will because the problem I am having is intermittent, the low rumbly sound doesn't happen all the time. If it was the cable it would do it all the time.
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech okay its not audio problems its power supply filtering and you said you change regulator and capacitor maybe it fix the problems i hope you fix it shortly because i like very much your restoration and discover journey for the first time on your youtube channel
Just watched TNT arcades video on 'journey' and on theirs there is a earth strap connected to the board, may be that will get rid of the hum. It is located to the right of the board as you have it mounted
Yes, I mentioned this in the video. I tried grounding that and had no change.
Missed you saying that. Hope you find the answer
ESR Meters are only useful for Electrolytic caps. They don't work on Tantalum caps as far as i'm aware.
Ah, interesting! I'll have to research how to really test that stuff.
nice fix
39:56 -- SWEEEET! :D
Ahh! Dat spider at 15:30! i hate spiders... LOL
knew you could do it jhon love that journey cab. great work. i will be checking your forum out soon. could anyone tell me if my transformer (big black thing bottom of the cabinet) is supposed to get hot? is this normal? thx
Btw 32:00 lol that sounds kinda wrong until you say the ohm and stuff here's the pot I got this on eBay XD
I'm surprised UA-cam's music recognition fliters didn't flag this video due to the commercial music you are playing thru the cassette player.
15:50
spider in the arcade cabinet
If some rumble remains at the final seene(sp?) But it can be minimized it could be 'Crowd noise' at the 'concert'. Having said that , I hope you can eliminate it all together.
like someone else said, running the cassette player on batteries and disconnecting the power jack would be useful data point. leave the audio lead connected see what it sounds like.
Yeah, I agree. I'll grab some batteries.
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech I think I figured out your problem but I would re Cap as well.. What you have is a duel amp on your game. One controls the left and the other controls the right audio. You have a mono pug running to it which will not work. You need a 2 channel splitter I think they said. basically a way to run the RCA wires. That is what you should use. Right now you got both channels wired to a single input and that is causing your issue.
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech A mono plug has left in the red and the black is the right I think. You got left and right of each speaker hooked to the single lead in the mono wire.with no ground hooked in and that is causing it. Hope you understand. Kinda technical stuff.
Mark Splender No, that's not my issue. It's supposed to be mono. Look at the wiring diagram. And, I think I fixed it tonight. It was a cap. :)
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech your cassette player needs to be degaussed.
Finally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Although you wired your jack plug to your moulex connection however you had no reference to what was ground and what was signal the other end because it was sealed so they could be backwards causing your buzzing swap em over on the moulex. Well done you discovered that if you use a stereo jack in a mono output you may have to pull the connector out slightly. To be honest it dont take a genius to plug your phone in it and rule out the tape player as the problem. I would of done the journey tape first so i knew id got a fresh recording and new tape. CHECK THAT MONO CONNECTOR!.
normaly if you turn 3.5 stereo jack in mono you need to put the white and the black wire together for ground and the red are the audio
Yes, I understand this now. I have since rewired the audio cable. I'll let you guys know if it fixes the issue. It's too early to tell as the rumble sound seems to come after the game warms up.
awesome vid you got it going
hrm. i wonder if that's the cause of the hum on my Tron Mini...
Good job, now.... GET GOING WITH QUANTUM!!! ;)
LOL! I'm done with the Journey yet!! :)
Yes you are! ;) haha!
Tony Graf Oops!! I am NOT done with Journey yet! :)
there's that spider again at 16:25
AHHh!! I hate 🕷 get it away!!
thats radio interference or from cassette speaker causing that
Anyone else notice the crickets? lol.
wait how do you not know that stuff that uses that kind of plug for power says in the device? it would say on the tape player what is + and what is -. everything that uses them says.
surprised didn't plug it in before doing that., headphones are 3.5MM and mic are 2.5M usually. always been like that.
yeah, it says on the tape player what is positive and what is negative. I showed this in the video.
yeah i didn't see that yet in video. sounds like volume needs to be adjusted but not sure how you would do that with 2 volume controls like that.
Yeah., I made a a mistake!
did the spider crawling inside the machine at 15 mins to 16 mins scare anyone else
The amp has a stereo input for the game and the cassette player has stereo out, but you are using a mono plug?
Oh, wait. I guess maybe it isn't stereo... I see on page 3-3 of the schematic that it only shows a mono connection even thought the full schematic on page 3-5 shows pins 9 and 10 are the left channel Lcass and Lgnd and pins 11 and 12 are the right channels Rcass and Rgnd. So you could go stereo from the cassette player. ;)
the rumble sound to me just sounds like how tape players sound,..it is quite loud here though,..maybe the audio needs better grounding
Try another tape and try cassette player with headphones ans see if still buzzes
Drop your phone much lol good video
old story but way did you not plug in your Phone och something ense ;) i allways use some new tech to trobble shoot stuff like this cuse then i know
Prediction... The 9v regulation seems fine (LM317), but it could have a bad cap. The 6v output (7805 so actually 5v) from the board is certainly giving bad power to the player. Certainly a bad cap but possibly a bad regulator as well...
John todd tuckey has done a video on journey on his tnt amusement youtube chanel. Best ask him as he gets the hum you get but only for a split second when he does the test mode casette test
Why would I ask him? He gets the hum and didn't fix it. I had the hum and I fixed it. :) Watch my next video.
Glad you fixed it. Just trying to help. Will watch your video
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech can you point me in the direction of the video please as I cant find it on your channel
paul gregory Next video. :) It'll be a couple of days.
Cool.just watching your dragons lair. Sick pick up mate and in great condition

Obama ruler.........geez.
I got it for my kids and was trying to be positive. :) If you knew anything about me...
John, you made me cringe watching you cut the sheathing on that 1/8" plug with your side cutters. Afraid you were going to slip. Keep up the good work.
