Golf Ball Comparison | Range Balls vs Premium Balls

- This golf ball comparison focuses on a common dilemma golfers face. Is it worth it to practice with range balls, if I just use premium balls on the course? There are several differences in the construction of range balls and premium balls. But how do they test on Trackman?
In this video, 2nd Swing's Thomas Campbell and Drew Mahowald conduct a Trackman Test golf ball comparison pitting premium golf balls against range balls. Can you still get worthwhile practice out of range balls?

Thanks for this test! Good insights…your range balls are definitely in 100x better condition than my local range.
wow, so appreciate that you guys make this content. So many youtuber films this topic, but some said different some said same
When I worked as a course and closed it in the evening while waiting for the last group to finish I’d take a a dozen of two or three different types and brands of balls I’d find in the woods out on the course with one club and hit straight, fade and draw shots to compare performance.
I found the difference in the coefficient of friction the urethane covers of the premium balls explains the difference in spin rate off irons and wedges you get with them. Spin creates lift so it affects trajectory, distance and how much input (face and stance adjustments) is needed to shape shots.
For example hitting a shot that fades 10 yards into a left to right angled green and takes one hop and stops takes much less alteration of stance and face with a ProV1 than with a Pinnacle Gold and it is possible to shape shots more aggressively with the premium ball. The difference in friction of ball on club face plays is also every evident in partial swing and bunker shots.
Great video! Outdoor fittings can be done really well, but you are 100% right on wedges. Go get some second hand "practice" premium balls for the short game!
A lot of ranges have restricted distance balls as well. I would also say that most range balls do not come as close to the distance of a premium ball as is suggested in this video.... Still, perfectly fine to practice on the range - just know there's a difference. Heck of a lot better than, for example, hitting indoors against a drape that is five feet away from you... You can still ascertain contact, and initial path in terms of right/left, which are most important...
Yeah I mean my range balls have no dimples any more and are like smooth balls 😂 they go nowhere
I have always wondered about this. Very interesting comparison. Nice swings with the driver Thomas!
Thanks for watching the driver was on that day - Thomas
I do appreciate your videos. I am 67 my swing speed has dropped to 88 mph on average. I have great clubs and great shafts that have increased my distance so I'm left with golf balls. I've tried low compression balls but I swear many times off the driver they literally are knuckle balls you can see them knuckling. I seem to hot the srixon q star divide ball as good as any ball. Can you somehow do a comparison with that ball versus say titelist velocity, and/or chrome soft. Using of course someone my swing speed or little less. Say 85 mph. Driver by the way.
That's a very good range ball some of the range balls at some of the driving range near me are rubish not even round
Please do a video on golf balls from LostGolfBalls versus new ones! You can compare a brand new Pro V1 against grace A,B, and C. I don’t think there is much degradation to distance or performance when a ball is found in the water.
I believe MGS did a test, and there's a lot big loss of performance on used water balls.
@@rickhammel9541 They did their test on refinished golf balls, not refurbished or even "waterlogged" golf balls. Refinished golf balls are painted, refurbished depending on quality level are cleaned and just sold. The worse the quality, the more there are scuffs and dings.
Mat vs Grass on Range comparison?
Super interesting. I thought it was just me when I would work on flighting my wedges lower on the range that it resulted in an epic fail but i could do it when I actually played a rd. I just summed it up to me sucking at it
It was nice to see my suspicions confirmed. So why are range balls worse, does it simply come down to cost?
Great video guys! Hey Thomas I noticed you now use the Rogue ST I know you played the Epic Max LS prior which I have, just wanted to know what main differences you see withe Rogue VS Epic. Thank you!
I play the triple diamond head a little smaller visual plus more round its more of a visual but the epic max LS still keeps up - Thomas
Could you guys PLEASE do a review on the Noodle golf ball? There’s nothing out there on it. Very curious to see and it’s actually a very popular ball.
Thanks for the feedback, we need to do more ball testing. This is added to the list - Thomas
Great insight. I work on my short game a lot and have a shag bag full of only premium pro v1 golf balls. Not real useful to practice dialing in yardages with crappy golf balls
Glad to hear you only use premium balls for your short game - Thomas
which store do you guys broadcast your videos from?
Fascinating comparison.
Thanks for watching - Thomas
It's all very well saying that the wedge spin is an outlier, but the difference in total distance was 2 yards. As long as you stick with your chosen ball and practice with it, I can't see what difference it makes to the average golfer. This video proves that expensive golf balls are a rip-off and lots of us are falling for it - including me! If a decent range ball comes so close, then I'm sticking with Kirkland!
The core on some range balls are so off center that the ball flight will start as a draw and end fading, or start with a fade and then draw.
Or you get balls that get up the air a little bit and then after 40 yards just nose dive.
Can u guys compare a premium ball vs a reduced flight range ball?
Good suggestion. Next time at a limited flight range we will grab a couple balls - Thomas
Looks like you used brand new range ball. Try the test with a bucket of balls that have been around for a while.
Love how they glossed over the 2 mph faster ball speed with the range ball, lol
Crazy huh these range balls are in very good shape and are not limited flight - Thomas
The range balls at my course are far from great condition. My numbers are not even close to a premium ball.
For sure it depends on the type of range ball. Follow up range ball comparison video needs to happen - Thomas
Those look like decent range balls. I’m sure it’s even worse when the range balls are Spalding.
Ok. This does not sound like any range I go to. Ranges have restricted distance balls. That’s it that’s all I have to say. Lol
We need to complete a follow up range ball comparison video as many range balls will go shorter - Thomas
Actual labeled range balls don’t feel like a rock like Thomas said. Definitely not any harder than a prov1x. Surprised at the driver and 7 iron distances though as a lot of the premium ball marketing is touting distance as a selling point.
You can get cheaper balls that are longer than a prov1. But are awful for feel and control shots. Prov1 (which I use) just tend to have better all round performance/consitencey in all aspects. So I guess its what you need more. Some people would prefer to sacrifice the 'feel' aspect for a few extra yards off the tee. It's not like the prov1 is short either, its actually long for a ball that also has that much feel.
goes to show that the range balls are harder i would assume to last longer on the range
I don’t know what’s different because obviously you’re just reporting the results you had, but I’ve watched several other videos testing this as well as multiple websites that have tested this and your results in terms of distance is a major outlier. Literally EVERY other test I’ve seen has range ball going significantly shorter by around 5%. That doesn’t seem like a lot but it’s almost a full club at 7i distances. You usually have great videos but something is missing in this one and the previous one on this subject.
at least some are lucky and the range balls are all the same. my course the range balls are found, lost, water and given. the course just uses spray paint and put a small spray to show is a course range ball.
That will be challenging for any consistency. Try and hit two more premium balls with your wedges - Thomas
Crazy we pay 40 dollars more per dozen for wedge spin lol. But it's necessary.
Wedge, spin control and feel! - Thomas
you should have redone the wedge
No need at all these are the exact results you will see hitting range balls with a wedge - Thomas
In other news....water is wet! 🤣
Thanks for watching - Thomas
Try the test with 10 year old range balls.
My range game is scratch. Pure shots. Towards target. My real game is crap. Grounders. Miss both left and right. Just ugly.
Start hitting range balls on the course then
You didn’t tell us anything. Mostly just a bunch of indecipherable mumbling
