Really interesting. I have tacky patches at the top of one of my chimney breasts on the 1st floor, nowhere else in the house. Thought it was damp coming in from the chimney but have since had it repointed... and still the tacky patches are there. Now I'm wondering if it might be hydroscopic salts. Would love to know more about your advise for how to deal with it.
Really interesting Simon and I really appreciate you pointing out that hygroscopic damp does not have a thermal signature -- because no evaporation is taking place. Unbelievable how some people can instantly diagnose damp from a distance and without a proper investigation! Do you have any more detailed videos on salt damp?
Excellent video thanks a lot. I have fairly small damp patches caused by salts on ground floor chimney breast. I've had the plaster taken off, left to dry for a month and then replastered with gypsum but some of the damp patches have persisted. Dehumidifier running constantly for a month and still they don't dry up. They are not wet to touch but are darker and feel colder than rest of the wall. Will either try "salt inhibitor primer paint" or perhaps the gloss layer as you mention, any other tips? Thanks again

Don't use gypsum. It doesn't breathe. Use lime based plaster.
