Rising damp or hygroscopic salts?
Переглядів 3,9 тис.4 роки тому
To Steve Hodgson PCA, Property Care Association May 20 The trigger for my email was the PCA claim that a 2.5m high sloping band of hygroscopic salts were an example of rising damp. There are no scientific studies proving groundwater can cause a sloping salt band or that rising damp can be as high as 2.5M. I believe the cause of the salt band is hygroscopic salts probably from a chimney, or mayb...

Really interesting. I have tacky patches at the top of one of my chimney breasts on the 1st floor, nowhere else in the house. Thought it was damp coming in from the chimney but have since had it repointed... and still the tacky patches are there. Now I'm wondering if it might be hydroscopic salts. Would love to know more about your advise for how to deal with it.
Spot on!
Great video, You give a way of stopping the salts from inside but is there a way of stopping them from outside to remove the banding that's easily seen?
Very interesting. Have similar interia damp issues around the base of a chimney and adjacent walls. Where abouts are you as I am interested in a home survey
Really interesting Simon and I really appreciate you pointing out that hygroscopic damp does not have a thermal signature -- because no evaporation is taking place. Unbelievable how some people can instantly diagnose damp from a distance and without a proper investigation! Do you have any more detailed videos on salt damp?
The PCA is only interested in selling their products to combat 'rising damp'. They are not interested in finding and rectifying the cause of the damp.

Excellent video thanks a lot. I have fairly small damp patches caused by salts on ground floor chimney breast. I've had the plaster taken off, left to dry for a month and then replastered with gypsum but some of the damp patches have persisted. Dehumidifier running constantly for a month and still they don't dry up. They are not wet to touch but are darker and feel colder than rest of the wall. Will either try "salt inhibitor primer paint" or perhaps the gloss layer as you mention, any other tips? Thanks again
Don't use gypsum. It doesn't breathe. Use lime based plaster.

I've never heard the expression thermal fin before. Would you expand on it in another video please?
