LYRICS
You gotta be smart
You gotta be cool
You gotta keep a straight face
When you're playin' the fool
You gotta wear a smile
When you're breakin' the rules
You gotta charm that snake now, baby
You gotta be smooth
You gotta be quick
I think it might just help
To be a little bit sick
You know the bite can't cut you
If the skin is thick
Charm that snake now, baby
Hey, we ain't all good lookin'
There ain't no reason
To take a good lickin'
The clock on the wall
Gonna keep on tickin'
Charm that snake now, baby
Charm that snake now, baby
Whoa! Oh! Oh!
Don't let go of it
Don't let go
Whoa! Oh! Oh!
Gotta charm that snake
Charm that snake
One stripe, two stripes
What does it mean?
The venom is lethal
But the meat is clean
The best take advantage of you like a machine
You gotta charm that snake now, maybe
Don't let the fingernails
Under the heart
If they get a good grip
They're gonna rip it apart
The first and last kisses
Are the dangerous part
You gotta charm that snake now, baby
Charm that snake now, baby
Whoa! Oh! Oh!
Don't let go of it
Don't let go
Whoa! Oh! Oh!
Gotta charm that snake
Charm that snake
There's a hook in the bait
The first one made a mistake
If you've got what it takes
You better charm that snake
You gotta let it show
You ain't gonna let it go
I'm gonna let 'em know
Never gonna let it go
Uh-huh! well, all right!
Let's get it right
Oh, yeah!
You gotta charm that snake
Whoa, gotta charm that snake now, baby
Whoa, gotta charm that snake now, baby
Charm that snake
Whoa, you gotta charm that snake now, baby
Whoa, you gotta charm that snake now, baby
Charm that snake
ABOUT CHRISTOPHER CROSS
Christopher Cross burst onto the music scene with his 1979 self-titled debut album produced by Michael Omartian. The lead single “Ride Like The Wind” spent 4 weeks at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and was quickly followed up by Cross’ most popular single to date (and first #1 hit) “Sailing”, which later became known as the archetype for the Yacht Rock genre. In 1981, Cross became the first artist in Grammy history to win the “Big Four” most prestigious awards in a single night; Record of the Year (for the single “Sailing”), Album of the Year, Song of the Year (also “Sailing”), and Best New Artist. Later that year Cross released “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do)” which he co-wrote with Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer, Peter Allen, and was the title-theme for the 1981 film “Arthur” starring Dudley Moorre and Liza Minnelli. The song earned Cross his second #1 and the Oscar for Best Original Song at the 1981 Academy Awards. Cross’ sophomore album “Another Page” was released in 1983 and featured the singles “Think of Laura” and “All Right”. Cross has sold over 10M albums worldwide and his songs have been covered and sampled by NSYNC, Puff Daddy, Avant, Shirley Bassey, Dione Warwick, and many more.
Cross's desire to become a race driver struck him at the age of 32 when he met Ferrari team driver Patrick Tambay in Italy. “I was totally fascinated by it, the speed, the exhilaration, the whole scene. I even had lunch with Mr. Ferrari, the commendatore himself. The old man couldn’t have cared less who I was, but his granddaughter, who was about 13, turned out to be a big fan of mine.” After meeting with Tambay, Cross enrolled in a French driving school for intensive training.
With the guidance of Tambay and Formula One driver Danny Sullivan, Cross entered club racing and eventually earned his professional license. He participated in regional and national events, showing improvement with each race. However, his size and limited experience were a concern for Sullivan and Tambay, who advised him against driving certain cars.
On September 19, 1984, during a testing session at Willow Springs Raceway Cross experienced a significant crash. He was driving his Super Vee when the accident occurred. According to reports, Cross dropped a wheel into the dirt while coming out of a high-speed turn, causing him to lose control of the car. He then collided head-on with a concrete barrier. The impact of the crash resulted in severe injuries for Cross. He suffered a broken left leg, a broken right ankle, and a particularly concerning injury for a musician, a broken left hand, with one finger compressed nearly an inch. This left him unable to play the guitar for an extended period. Despite the seriousness of the crash and the injuries sustained, Cross displayed the tenacity of a race driver. He worked closely with doctors to design a special cast that would allow his hand to fit around a steering wheel, enabling him to return to racing just a month after the accident.
While the crash delayed the production of his newest album, "Every Turn of the World," he eventually made a successful recovery and continued to embrace the intersection of his two passions: music and racing. He was determined to them both and started incorporating a racing theme into his album covers and music videos. He planned to match his racing schedule with concert tour dates, similar to the late Marty Robbins, who also raced in NASCAR.
Love That! I go to Sebring here in Florida every 2yrs. And it's exciting every time to see. I call it The Steve McQueen Raceway.
Phenomenal!
Ainda bem que ele não seguiu a carreira de piloto, ficou na música e nos presenteou com seus belos trabalhos. Músicas 🏆
If this is the case, then maybe he should've wrote a song called "Racing" as a follow up to "Sailing." Ah, that rhyming feel. Who knows? Might've even scored him a few more Grammys in the process. Maybe even a spot in NASCAR.
