The length, story and of course the videography is just super! Another great release from you two.
You are too kind ❤️
Back in the Summer of ‘76, two friends and I (we were in the Navy at the time), did the section from Tuolumne Meadows to Devil’s Postpile, with a few side-trips along the way. We didn’t have enough to make the entire journey but sure had a ball. We ended up teaming up with two more folks and sojourned together for about half of the trip. One of those folks was a guru on wild edibles and trees, etc, so we had informal classes on these topics every time we stopped for a break or meal or whatever…changed my life completely. Love you guys and have been following you since the days of y’all traveling with Jessica & Jorge (as well as Linus, Petunya, and of course Ripley)…
Excellent documentary on the High Sierra Trail. I've done the trail and loved your story and seeing the amazing sights once again. Thank you for putting this together!
Always so good seeing you two, your story telling, film, photography skills are all becoming so amazing! 💙🏔️
Thank you! You are making us blush over here!
The quality of your work is so special I don’t even know how to verbalize it.......
Thanks Kimberly. We really appreciate the kind words, especially on a project this big!
This was amazing... thanks for taking me back on the way back machine. I did this hike almost 50 years ago. I think you might have had a little more graupel than we did. Remember, summits are optional, getting back is mandatory.
Oh wow! That is so amazing that you have done it! Its the type of place that really sticks with you isn't it?!
HST alumni '21. Smart of you to respect what the trail gave you and skip the summit. The most memorable moments in my life have also been the most challenging. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
Isn't that the truth though?! Good to have that kind of context in the moment. "This is big and important, just need to hold on long enough to find out why"
Such a great video 🙏 I really enjoy how real, honest and poetic your travels are. You guys are truly a gem of UA-cam
Wow, thank you! That is truly so kind!
simply speechless..... wow freaking wow!!! love love love
You are so sweet!
Wonderfully documented. Keep doing what you're doing. Had my attention the entire time. You've earned a new subscriber. 👍
Thank you so much! We are glad you are here for the ride!
Thank you both for sharing this adventure! Glad you both came out safe and you definitely made the right call regarding weather. Looking forward to the next video.
Yall are top tier movie quality
Thanks Geekahertz, you're too kind!
Always “top tier”…
When ever i want to get away in my head, I think of driving down the Owens Valley, the Eastern Sierras and White Mountains revealing their vertical walls and lofty peaks before me. Thank you for sharing your adventure of the crown jewel of this majestic place.
Nicely done and good decision making! Our motto is “live to hike another day!”
Another absolutely epic adventure superbly documented!
Wow. Just WoW.
This was riveting!!
From the cinematography, the narration, the information, the challenges, and the wide range of emotions, this is one of your best!!
Thank you for using your knowledge & wisdom in the mountains, knowing when to retreat for cover. Of course you learned some things that give perspective and knowledge for future use, but this was so well done, I felt at times that i was there experiencing the little jaunt over the hill with you!😳🥴
Great job and thank you both for sharing your journey, through the Sierras, and thru life!!
This is a masterpiece 👍🙂
Gosh, thank you for the kind words! Thank you so so much for that. It's so hard to know in the moment if you are making the right decisions particularly when there are big consequences if you make the wrong call. But I am glad that others can hopefully learn from our experiences and feel like they can address a situation with more confidence!
@@BoundForNowhere I really believe you guys are helping untold numbers of people, singles & couples alike, to try outdoor things/travel/adventure, they they might never have tried otherwise. From simple hikes, bold Sierra treks, short weekend trips to rv living full-time. Yall provide valuable information & logistics. The ups & downs, pros & cons.
Most of all you don't just give info- you execute the plan. You show it can be done, & make it fun!
After cancer & then full-time rv-ing from 2020to Mar '24, I'm slowing down to having a home base. But I travel on through you guys, & others met along the way.
Best wishes & continued growth & success as you plan, wing it, & LIVE life together. 💙👍
Awesome production guys. Great to see you out making it real and taking us along for the ride, the real ride. Glad everything turned out well so we'll see you on another adventure. ✌✌
If I recall correctly, we ran into you at Crabtree Ranger Station meadow - Labor day weekend 2023. You folks were super helpful sharing the weather conditions and what you had experienced, so appreciated it & super thankful. Thank you so much. Great capture of your adventure. All the best MAK and Owen.
I’m glad you made one part and not two. You guys know the good spots to go too. Your back country trips are inspiring. You’ve really explored this country and shown it to us. Thanks for sharing.
I simply love your videos... beautiful photography, perfect editing, soundtrack and above all MAK’s narration that conveys peace, even in moments of tension... I know it's not possible, but I would love it if you could release a film like this EVERY week ! Just perfection! ❤
Again why aren’t you shooting for discovery channel or National Geographic? 😮mind blowing as usual. I was in tears 😭
You are so generous with your compliments! I hope you one day work with them! In the meantime we are pretty content making the things we love ❤️
Great film. Great story. Happy you are safe. Congrats on the summit!
Thank you so so much ❤️ technically not a summit but hey we got our asses out of there safely and that’s what counts
I was so excited to see a new video from you two. I love your work. Your storytelling and filmmaking is top notch. Super inspiring. Thank you
No! Thank you! We so appreciate you enjoying it!
Heather’s Choice is the only choice!!! IMO
As someone who just returned after 19 months to the backcountry due to an incident that left me with 68% burns, I greatly appreciate your productions! ❤ Safe travels!!!
Aw! Well speedy recovery to you and happy weekend could keep you out there in spirit!
So awesome you guys. Congrats getting through that.
Thanks Tyler! Can't wait to share more about it!
Wow what an experience this was! I loved this film, the storytelling, and the message of "Press On." You inspire me, Mak! I look forward to see what else you two come out with!
SHANNONNNNNNNN! Thank you so much for watching! I really appreciate that! And I miss you already! See you soon!
What an epic journey! I envy you the memories and confidence you gained from your successful hike; thanks for sharing it with us.
Happy to share! It feels like a good way to hopefully help others learn from our experiences without the discomfort and fear ;)
Such a beautiful reminder of the highs and lows of exploring outdoors. Loved watching it!
When things don't go according to plan, thats where we learn and remember the most!
@@BoundForNowhere Agreed!
Brilliant little film and im glad you made it the length you did. If someone has a problem watching 40+ mins of excellent film quality then there not worth worrying about. Please make more like this. For us older people it reminds us of the world we cant get to see anymore. Regards.
Thank you so much for the kind words. I will say, it felt like a story of this size needed more time to be told! Glad we could bring you with us!
Absolutely amazing guys! I'm always excited about a new Bound for Nowhere video and this one didnt disappoint! Amazing cinematography, excellent story telliing, 10/10 all around. Thanks for sharing. All of your hard work is definitely appreciated! Looking forward to the next one already!
Making me blush over here 🤗
I was in Colorado and wasn't aware of how much trouble Hillary had created for the California mountains. A really well-done video of your back packing adventure in the Sierras.
Yeah they were really wild and the second one we got caught in truly blindsided the area. Glad things weren’t any worse though 😬
@BoundForNowhere
Wow! Well, I'm glad I was in Colorado and not in Whitewater, California, where I spend a lot of time.
I could’ve watched 2 hrs more. Awesome documentary clearly solid hikers with experienced decision making skills. Thank you for sharing just subscribed.
thanks for memories! did Kings Canyon to Whitney portal in the 80's. absolutely magical!!
Its the type of place that leaves a lasting impression is it not?!
What a great and inspiring film. Such important life lessons. Thanks.
Thank you for watching!
Absolutely everything I thought it would be. I enjoy following along with you both 😊 Incredible experience! ❤
Thanks for joining us for the premiere! Hope for many more!
Well I’m a day late in viewing but I have a note from my mom so hopefully you won’t give me a demerit! This has been another fantastic film Mak & Owen, your story held my attention and kept me in suspense for most of the film. Seriously, you both and your editor get better and better with every film you make. Couple details: I enjoyed your friend giving you both some Q&A prior to your departure. It humanized you both more than normal but especially Owen. I think a minute or two on the return from the summit bypass would have made the film more complete, skipping the return makes the viewer think it’s either a super easy/boring hike or short and easy hike. Regardless the film was lacking just that little something to help wrap up the ending. Loved the film! As always, thank you for everything, Bryan
This was so well produced!!! Love it!
Love you guys. You both are inspirational. I just got back from hiking the Adirondacks and have many more ideas because of you two. Thank you for being you.
Wow - what a wild set of storms. But of course, you made great decisions and are here to tell the story. Well done - it was just beautifully made video of a beautiful area. I'm glad you survived to remain my neighbor.
Thanks! We obviously are happy to tell the tail too 😘
Outstanding sums this film😀 that’s all I got.
Thanks so much! We're definitely proud of this one!
I can’t wait to watch it. Right now I’m watching my Dallas Mavericks and the NBA finals so I’ll probably watch it after the game is over.
What an amazing video! Great story! I see some people thought the video was too long. How unfortunate for them they have such short attention spans. Content this good makes time just fly by. Thank you for excellent video work and story telling!
Happy to help you pass the time ❤️ and thanks for the kind words!
Another incredible film, love the hard work and dedication being put into everything y’all do!
Our pleasure! We feel so lucky to be doing what we clearly love ❤️
Can’t wait!
Thanks Dad ❤❤
Love it!! Timing and storytelling was👌
Hooray! So glad you love it!
Enjoying your low key style. Great work.
Appreciate that! I like to think that is the perfect way to describe my/our style!
Great video guys! This brought us right back to when we did the HST in 2018. We had the most intense hail and lightning at Guitar, we thought we were going to die. Still have PTSD from that. All worth it though. The solitude and beauty on that trail were completely worth it.
It definitely can get wild up there. It was such a stark contrast to when we did the JMT in 2019 and we had perfect conditions for summiting!
@@BoundForNowhere The weather is a total crap shoot. 🤣 Thanks for documenting it so well and taking us along!
this video is so sick yet so peaceful!
Amazing video! Glad you guys trusted your gut and turned back down the mountain.
You guys are SO awesome! What an insane trip and amazing video.
Great as always
Glad you think so!
I actually just got a HST permit for September the same day this came out. Great timing and even greater video (as always)!
Amazing, thanks for sharing!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I recently heard the term "secondary fun". It means an adventure was arduous at the time, but after a (varying) amount of time, it becomes fun in retrospect.
We call that type two fun, this was definitely two two fun
Excellent film, great story telling ,good drama and happy ending 👍👍
Thank you so much! I am so glad you enjoyed it! Not the story we set out to tell, but glad we made it out safely to tell the tail!
Wonderfully beautiful ❤. Makes me want to go back to the High Sierras
MEEEE tooo! Such a lovely place!
Thanks for the great content! we just had to call a big hike in Austria due to snow so seeing you guys make the call to be safe made us feel a little btr. Always enjoy your videos, don’t listen to the haters you all are great content creators!
Oh I am so sorry to hear that! I know how devastating it is to forgo something you want to do so badly!
Shhhhh..... I'm watching 😁
Enjoy our brain baby… weird way of saying that but it’s true 🫠
This. Was. INCREDIBLE.
Yay! So happy you liked it ❤️❤️
Beautifully done❤
Exciting
We are over the moon 💫
Thanks!
Thank you so much ❤️
Very good decision making!
Thanks so much. Hard to know in the moment if the right calls are being made in the moment. But you just have to trust
Epic hike. Your usual outstanding cinematography combined with great music. Love the still shots at the end. Always a highlight to watch Bound for Nowhere. Viewing from Northwest coast of Newfoundland with one of your stickers staring back at me from the door of our motorhome.
Oh say hello to Newfoundland for us ❤️ we miss it so much! And thanks for the kind words 💫
I just love your work, all of it. Thank you!
Glad you enjoy it!
Just WOW! Great film yall.
Thank you so so much ❤️
Eeeee! 🤩🤩🤩
Hope you all love it!
Love your storytelling. We were rooting for you the whole way! I appreciate how hard those trail decisions are in the moment and you demonstrated solid skills that we all can emulate. Well done and it was so professionally crafted. 🥰
Nice video journal of the HST. Possible to have done the summit. Those conditions at the saddle looked good and you were plenty early. Nice job on a beautiful trail.
Love it, great job as always
@6:24 we used to be able to drive under that rock in the 90's. We'd stop and take family photos under it.
Oh that is so wild!
outstanding video
The way Owen says, "Fuck" at 26:30 is the best way to say it.
HA! We thought about taking it out but it so perfectly summarizes how the situation felt! 🫠
❤️👍EPIC 🥾❤️👍
Thank you so much!
Very nice!!!
That was killer. Thanks 🤙
Thank you for watching!
I don’t know you personally but I am very glad you chose the safe option. I would be really heartbroken if something happened to you. Recently Dr Michael Mosely passed away on a short walk on a Greek Island. He didn’t have his phone with him and it was 40 degrees centigrade. Such a good man. Wish we hadn’t lost him so early. He was only 67.
Okee dokee!
Let’s Gooooo! 🚀
Magnificent, make the content you desire to
We very much do!
Peter Crosby III approves.
I did the HST in 2022. It's always good to see the trail from somebody else's perspective, in different conditions. Did you ever entertain the idea of exiting at Cottonwood, instead of continuing on to Trail Crest?
If the storm didn't let up for another day, we were going to start looking into other exit strategies. Thankfully we got a weather window soon enough to feel like we could safely get up and over... albeit, very cold 🫠
@@BoundForNowhere Yeah, that makes sense. Definitely the right decision to ride out the storm. Looked like a great trip, regardless. Well captured 👏
Great video. Wise choices make for great adventures. I had a similar set of trials on a trip last year. Better to retreat to safety and return the next day or even in a few days. I love my jet boil also. Only issues are when it is in single digits and the gas cans don’t work so well.
Video and your journey is amazing, and I love the way you and Owen tell the story. Have hiked the HST 3x (when I was much younger). One question that I am do have, and this is not a criticism. You passed with 2-tenths of a mile of the Crabtree Backcountry Ranger station. Why not shelter there until the storm passed versus moving on? It was a hell of an adventure and I congratulate both of you for the wise choices you made and wish you both safe travels in the years ahead. An amazing couple.
The "turn-back" muscle is as important to hone and engage as any physical sinew in our bodies. As they say, "The summit is optional, but the parking lot is mandatory." You've stood on the top of the world already and know that it will still be there whenever you desire to return. Last year I had to turn back on a 4-day trip in Oregon after just the first day, because of a wildfire. But that's hiking in the West for ya. Every time you go out, there's a chance that the elements (including fire) will make you think your way through the hike and adjust expectations.
Sucks having the fires when at Lake Hamilton and especially at Precipice Lake. I was up there a week ago in similar conditions except that the air was crystal clear. The frozen Precipice Lake is a sight to behold. Awesome scenery.
❤❤
Hope you all love it 😘
This is awesome!!! You guys are such an inspiration! Making the right call in those situations can be very difficult to make and make you push deep within yourself to find what really matters. Quick question: What is the final song used in the video? It's very nice!
WISH IT WAS LONGER
We had some very bad forest fires in Alberta last year. The smoke in the air was at danger levels. Can't imagine you guys breathing in that smoke for a 9 hour hike. Bad for the lungs.
We didn't have much of an option. It was a nightmare when you can't escape it like that. So sorry that y'all have been getting such bad fires of late.
🎉❤
I am expecting zero adversity in this hike.... 😂
Glad you guys are okay
As always, these videos are beautiful, inspiring, and insightful. We own some merch and always look forward to new videos. I normally really enjoy your poetic descriptions as well, but one hopefully constructive critique that I have from this video is about the quote "it was like he was returning home from war" (re: hiker in Whitney). I don't mean to invalidate the potential dangers and fears in the backcountry, but with the millions of people suffering from a real war in Gaza right now- people who don't have a choice but to live in tents while we get to use them recreationally- would just caution the use of that term and the picture you're painting.
Lovely! I also enjoyed the ending with the photos and clips. I was wondering when you leave your car, aren’t you worried about it? I worry about break ins and vandalism all the time.
That is a very safe trail head. It is patrolled and people leave their cars all the time for weeks at a time. However, the mice, you do need to worry about 🫠
Great video! I am thinking about doing this trail in August. Couple questions: 1) do you feel that walk up permits are difficult to get and 2) what camera setup did you use to shoot this? love the cinematography and color grade
Nice Intro. Did you use LUTS or another film overlay in the intro? Good work
We did for the entire film, just did the color grading differently for different scenes. Dehancer 😘
@@BoundForNowhereI haven’t heard about dehancer I use davinci resolve and love it. I’ll check out the dehancer plugin. Thanks! Great cinematography and storytelling as always!
Amazing one..May I know where can I buy the Mamiya 645 and also which interchangeable screens are you using?
Amazing video! Mak, what brand are those pants? I would love to get my wife a pair she would really dig them. Amazing work as always!
There is a link in the description of the video that says something like: Clothing & Gear used on the hike. Follow that and they are linked in that list! They are comfortable and very versatile!
Any chance the two of you would do a multi-day hike in Utah. I follow Jamal Green, and I would love to see your point of view on such a hike. Thanks for taking us along.
You guys are aware there’s a nice shelter located at the peak of Mount Whitney that’s open for hikers to utilize, especially during inclement weather.
It was destroyed by a storm a few years ago. Also not trying to ride out a storm like this one up there. People nearly died up there that night
Definitely not safe to stay overnight on the summit. However, the Summit House was still there as of 2023.
Do you know why there's a pink hue to the snow at Precipice Lake?
Yes! That is an algae that grows in old snow actually! The pink is the photosynthesis part of the algae! Pretty cool right?
@@BoundForNowhere An algae?!?! Yeah, damn cool. Reminded me of the spice, Melange, from DUNE.
"The lessons we learn, we carry with us..." (closeup of Jetboil).
That's a bit much
You telling me you don’t like a good metaphor?! 😜
I'm curious why you decided to not make this a 2-part release? In a time when even the duration of an average TikTok short presents a challenge to the attention span of many media consumers, a 40+ minute long documentary of a hiking adventure could be a proposition that's not appealing to a large audience on UA-cam. Or is UA-cam not the primary release channel for "Press On"?
That's a great question and short attention spans definitely don't tip the scales in our favor. However, the simple answer is that we weren't willing to compromise our vision for this film for more views.
Never compromise your creativity or vision for others feelings or attention span.
Have to say that I disagree with this. I generally have a short attention span as well, but I thought this video was so perfectly shot and interesting that I didn't even realize the time had passed. It could have even been longer. So, I'm glad it was one video. But, I do understand your point.
No one needs to account for TikTok Brain
I love the longer episodes! ❤ keep it up!
