How the 2024 eclipse differs from the one in 2017

- Next month, people across the United States and especially here in North Texas will see the moon slowly move in front of the sun, briefly turning day into night. NASA mission scientist Nicholeen Viall joined Good Day to talk about what makes this eclipse especial and how it will be different from the one in 2017.

We were living in North Carolina in 1970(?) for the last full solar eclipse. We were standing in the apartment house parking lot, with the eclipse glasses, etc. but nothing was really working. We went back into our apartment, and my wife was on a living room chair, with her left hand, resting on the arm rest. All of a sudden, on the opposite wall, was the image of the eclipse, projected through her diamond ring. "Don't move Carol!!!" And that is how we watched the eclipse.
The last total eclipse in North Carolina was in 2017, where did you come up with 1970? It was a huge deal seven years ago how do not remember that?
@@dj-dickyt4635 perhaps it was not a full eclipse, only a partial--but it was recommended that you view it the usual way, through special "glasses." We lived in NC from mid-69 until mid-73, and the incident I describe, occurred during that period.
Ni was in glendo Wyoming saw it on my CD.
I remember that one. It was in March. The 2017 one was a total disappointment because it clouded up while the eclipse was going on.

We drove to some no name place in the middle what I believe is Wyoming in 2017. There were cows in a nearby field. When the sun was covered, they all started mooing and walking towards what I assume is home. Shortly thereafter, the sun appeared again, daytime went back to normal, cows returned because they hadn't made it that far, and it was really awesome! Poor cows were probably so confused...

You are not a grammar nazi if you simply are offering information. That’s how I do it when I’m driving. Pull up next to someone at a stoplight, say “Did you know your left brake light is out?” That gives them potentially missing information without embarrassing them or prescribing what I think their response should be. Why isn't anyone not talking about the comet ☄️ that's going to pass exactly between the sun and the moon at the same time as the solar eclipse is happening.
Because the masses are not ready for the truth
Because it's passing between Earth and Venus. "So, Pons-Brooks will pass between the orbits of Earth (on the outside) and Venus (on the inside) before heading out of the inner solar system again. It will not ever cross the orbit of Earth and can’t pose the least bit of danger via impact. The closet it will come to our planet on this orbit is about 1.5 AU in June 2024. That’s one and a half times the distance of Earth from the Sun! So, absolutely nothing to worry about."

For the 2017 eclipse, I stopped at a small town and found a group gathering to watch at some park. The electric company went through the city and was disabling the electric eyes for all the street lights in the area during the lead-up.
So why is it crossing from southwest to northeast instead of from northwest to southeast like it did in 2017 ?
Because the path of the moon's orbit around the earth varies.
It's because of the tilt of the earth's axis. Last time was late August, close to fall, whereas this time is in spring, which means that the earth is tilted the opposite way.
It wouldn't be a 'Crossing' if the Solar Eclipse orbited the same path in 2024 as in 2017, would it? A Cross is ❌, as depicted on the US map. This is truly magical, historical and the end of the world, for a new beginning for God's Chosen ones. 🍃🌱🌸🌿☘️🍃🦚

If the moon and the earth are always moving relatively the same speed, why is the totality almost double of that from the one in 2017?
TLDR: The moving patch of total shadow will be of larger diameter during this one.
(I’m late, I’m late, for a very important date! No time to say hello goodbye; I’m late I’m late I’m late! - the White Rabbit, in Alice in Wonderland)
* * * * *
But;
if you’re amenable to a Massive Missive©:
The moon’s orbit is not perfectly circular. Since it will be nearer earth during this eclipse than the last, the tip of its cone of total shadow, the ‘umbra’, will intersect with the earth’s surface where it makes a larger diameter patch of totality. This then takes longer to pass over a given location, and any observer(s), even while traveling at the same ground speed as the shorter, smaller eclipse from the more distant moon of the earlier event.
The area of partial shadow around the umbra, I.e. that which is alongside the path of totality and also preceding/following totality, is called the penumbra. I surmise it is a Latin based word, where umbra means shadow and the prefix pen- means near or next to, as used in penultimate which means ‘next to last’.
If an eclipse occurs while the moon is in a part of its orbit where it is sufficiently far from earth that the shadow’s tip never touches ground at all, we see an annular (ring) eclipse at the maximum. Then the observer is in the antumbra, ‘above’, as it were, the point of the cone. Look up ‘penumbra’ in Wikipedia, as I did, to see a helpful diagram which is also a part of their larger ‘Eclipse’ article. The ‘Eclipse’ article also confirmed my ‘umbral’ etymological surmise. It is derived from the Latin.
English is fun! At least, I find it so.
Parenthetically, earth’s surface rotates eastward at about 1000 mph (~1600 km/hr) at the equator, and closer to 750 (1200) across the contiguous States, but the ground path of totality still moves (north)eastward. Ergo, the moon orbits faster than the earth surface translates. Also, since a lunar month takes ~28 earth rotations (days), it follows that the moon must be more than 28 earth radii away. In fact according to Siri it varies from 57 to 63.7 radii in an elliptical orbit at an average of 2300 mph (3700 kph), about 3 times my local earth surface speed. Their going in the same direction gives a difference of 3700 - 1200 = 2500 kph ground speed, and I gave this very slapdash estimate an equally slapdash estimated +50/-33% error band. Well, Wikipedia via Siri gave me a figure of 1700 kph, almost within my result.
A fact treated as an unstated assumption in the above is that both the earth and the moon both rotate about their axes and revolve in their orbits around their respective local gravity wells in the counter clockwise direction, as viewed from north of the ecliptic plane. ‘North’ is defined throughout the solar system based on earth’s North Pole, of course. And, yes, both ‘boths’ above are needed by their respective clauses, and are not redundant. Maybe not the most felicitous rendering, but correct notwithstanding. You are welcome to read that again, if necessary.
A consequence of the CCW motion is that the moon will approach and encroach upon the sun from the west, your right for those North Hemisphericans facing south to view the sun, as is typical. However, a stationary camera taking a multiple exposure sequence will have its first image to the left/east. You’ve seen such a leftmost frame having a bite taken out of the sun’s right side, no? Both the sun and moon are passing across earth’s sky east/left-to-west/right. It’s just that the moon is doing so more slowly than the sun.
If you want to bend over backwards up here to see it, and argue left vs. right at me, go ahead. I’m not engaging this any further. You Ozzies (sp?) aren’t privy to this eclipse, I’m sorry to say, so you can’t get in on any tiff cooked up, I’m not sorry to say.
Re Latin; I.e. is short for ‘id est’, “that is to say,”
… and while we (the imperial, yes, even imperious, “WE”) are about it, people (lower case -caste?-, of course), it’s NOT ect., it’s etc. for the Latin ‘et cetera’, “and other things; and so forth; and so on”. I hereby put the entire internet on notice this March the Twelfth, Anno Domini 2024.
And why put a TLDR at the END of your long (de)compositions? The D supposedly stands for Don’t (in this authorial context) Read, after they/I presumably already have.
* * * * *
Once open the lid, and this stuff just comes foaming out like sourdough starter that hasn’t had its fermentation gases beaten out of it.
Because the moon moves in an elliptical orbit. And it's closer to the earth this time. So it will blot out more of the sun.
