One 5 minutes conversation I wish I had with someone (before I began my UPSC Preparation)

  • Many years ago, I missed the UPSC final list by 8 marks. My score in optionals was amongst the highest in India, my interview score was second highest.
A few years later, I’m in Istanbul - discussing with one of India’s entry level diplomats, whether it makes sense for him to leave services and do an MBA.
    1. India changed : We aren’t a 20th century economy anymore. With the advent of liberalization - state control of power shifted from Civil Servants to specialized professionals.
Current JS of Civil Aviation is an MBA from IIM A and was a partner at KPMG. There are 100 others like him who are laterally hired and contributing immensely through their work
    2. Working for Society : If Sunder Pichai had cleared IAS- he would be working as a collector in Noida. Impact he has created is insurmountable to one he could possibly create while being in services
It is extremely critical that exceptional people join IAS, but for those who couldn't should know that entry through an exam isn’t the only route in 21st Century India to make a difference.
Many youngsters preparing for IAS in India quit their jobs, take multiple years of sabbatical, and thoroughly screw up their 20s - in anxiety and depression with a hope of getting into civil services (that has a yearly cycle, less than .5% success rate, and an archaic curriculum).
There is no better way to screw up your life than prepare for government exams in India (without any backup plan).
From a career in the United Nations to social impact, to getting laterally hired - you can do a million things to create a large-scale impact.
Do write to me, if you are crumbling under pressure because of a few bad decisions you made in your 20s. . Life is definitely more than an exam that the British created to recruit loyal servants.

"One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors"
Look forward to inspiring youngsters to become part of the Public Policy Ecosystem via GGI's Policy Scholars Program - along with innumerable partnered organizations (such as BCG, Clinton Health Access Initiative etc) working closely with political and business leaders.

Instead of promoting upsc and encouraging youth to waste their 20’s over an exam that adds nothing of value to your skills we should promote research and development aptitude in young people to build our country. Imagine Homi Bhabha, Vikram Sarabhai and others wasting their 20’s over an exam that has colonial mentality linked to it. If it wasn’t for bureaucrats india would have been South Korea or Singapore.

Upsc or anything will give you a job only ..rest you have to work on it..so dont Destroy urself ur youth for this exam only ....

They can be done in your 30's too but can't achieve your dream once you cross a certain age. I lost my 20's and I just entered the workforce after 7 yrs of career gap. My manager is my batchmate and my peers are much younger to me.
If you have a job, don't leave your job as I did. This exam can be cleared while working, you may not clear in 1st attempt but in3 attempts with 10hours of work daily, one can manage to clear this exam in 3 attempts.
If you are hell bent to give up on your job, take NOT more than a year break from job and give your everything in preparation. Later, this preparation will help you while doing your job since the efforts needed will greatly be reduced since you already laid the foundation.
DON'T fall for coaching center or fellow DELHI ASPIRANTS words. Be Practical. All you need is a good MENTOR to clear this exam which will save Years for you.

Is there a fix for those who have already wasted their 20s or should we just shrink in confidence even further, its absolutely right to give your best attempt once it can't be the first for many since the syllabus is evolving each year. Speaking of regrets you'll surely have one if you don't clear, you'll have to choose the one you can live with, wasting five years of life regret or lifelong regret of would have cleared if persisted regret. The Jeff Bezos part is hardly relevant since he seemed to have persisted with his goal, that's what aspirants do?

6:05 no, at this point many think that government has failed them. Why should I care about entire economy? I have these intrusive thoughts. While I know what you mean and it’s more correct.

That's how you don't clear UPSC. it's a five year plan unless you are exceptional. So don't start if you don't want to invest your five years.
Because after that when you succeed then entire world will change for you.
A person who never cleared the exam cannot understand the value of that post of an IAS officer.

I believe those who don't think that they can sustain 10 hours of study for 18-20 months.. don't have a good handwriting.. don't have financially well off background or good attainable plan B.. should not take this exam by heart.. and can just try while working.. not leave everything for this, if above applies to u..

Story of one successful person have no relevance to other individuals life, circumstances, underlying problems, jeff, elon, adani like personalities r exceptions and exceptions r exceptions by nature, one individual cant take risk by just by seeing other successful individual's life,Around 8 billion humans on this planet, today' knowledge dissemination allows story's to be documented, which shows average human how someone become rich and make his faith on his own like he knows exactly what to do when to do ,but this fantasy is far from an average human reality,so my point is that no individual can achieve the bull eye untill or unless circumstances allows because a genius can make a master plan but no plan is fail proof
