Donuts!!!!!!!!! 😘I have never used "stop off" before. Is it not a New York thing to say? I usually say "stop at," as in "I stopped at the grocery store," or "stop by." Interesting!
Hey Jenny! Great to see you! Merriam Webster has stop off here: www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/stop%20off so it can't be just my odd British take on it. My British self takes full responsibility for the spelling of doughnut though. Oh and travelling with 2 Ls as well. :-)

I am grateful for answering. Can we say that "catch " is used with means of transportation that are scheduled. But we say I caught a taxi . I understood catch is opposite miss . Thanks in advance
Hi Hanaa. Vicki here. Yes, we use 'catch' with scheduled transportation. So we catch a bus, but we would say 'take a taxi' because taxis don't run on public schedules.

Hello Emad. Great question. When I said 'out and about' it was a very non-specific answer. It meant I had been travelling round, but I didn't say exactly where. It can also mean 'doing what you normally do'. So if someone has been sick but they're getting better, they might say 'I hope to be out and about soon'.

Hi Fathun. Great question! According to the Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary an expression is a word of phrase and an idiom is a group of words whose meaning is different from the meanings of the individual words. So all idioms are expressions, but not all expressions are idioms.

Hi Fathom. A common phrase like 'How are you?' or 'I'm fine thanks' would be an expression. But an idiom might be something like "What's up?" or "What's cooking?" Does that help?

Hello Elena. Great question. The meanings are very similar. 'Is she coming here?" would be the straightforward question, so why did Jay say 'She's coming here?' 'She's coming here?' certainly sounds natural and appropriate in this context. I think it's because he's checking he's understood and expressing surprise. Or maybe it's because he's speaking informally? What do other people think, I wonder?

The meanings are very similar. If you're making a stop on a plane journey, it's a stop over. If you're on your way home, and you go to the supermarket to by milk, you stop off to buy milk.
I think Vicki was wrong in this story, but it was always Jay who was blamed.

My learners struggle with this grammar rule; they usually say: "This is the man that I saw him yesterday". Due to L1 interference, they insist on using the object pronoun - 'him' in this example - after the relative pronoun - 'that' in this example - as they do in their L1. Do you think you can make a video on that Vicki? Thanks!

Vicky used out and about ....what does that mean? Could you please explain.
Ranjana, if someone is 'out and about' it means they have left one place, home or work, to do different things. We use that term when we can't specify exactly what activity a person is engaged in when they've gone out. This is Jay writing back to you. If i know Vicki has gone to the supermarket, and someone asked me where she is, I might say "She's gone shopping" or "She's out food shopping." But if I didn't know her plans, I could simply respond by saying "She's out and about." I hope that helps.

Oh well done, Dalil. Yes, you're right. We were looking at meanings to do with travel here but take off has several other meanings. Removing clothes is a common one. Another one (less common) is to copy someone. If we're making fun of someone we might take them off. And TV shows and programmes can be taken off the air - that's when they are no longer played.

Hello Arnold Mike. Flattery will get you everywhere. :-) Yes, 'pretty' means fairly in that context. It's not as strong as very. In British English we could also say 'quite' but 'quite would mean 'very' in American English. I plan to make a video about that one day.

I missed my flight, or I missed my train would be accurate. Another example would be the bus that stops regularly at your corner, and it just closed its doors and left as you approached. Why do people so often use the phrase "at the end of the day?" How long has this phrase been used? 🤔 ❓❓
Hi Francis. At the end of the day is informal and it roughly means 'after everything else has been taken into consideration'. This is one of those phrases that some people complain are overused. It's been found to be very common in Business English corpora and it seems to be growing in frequency. It's an old phrase but you can see its sharp increase in written use here: books.google.com/ngrams/graph?content=the+end+of+the+day&year_start=1800&year_end=2000&corpus=15&smoothing=3&share=&direct_url=t1%3B%2Cthe%20end%20of%20the%20day%3B%2Cc0. I don't know but, as it's used informally, I suspect this increase might be even sharper in spoken English. So why is it so popular? I'm afraid I have no idea! Maybe some other readers will have some thoughts on this.
Why did Jay say "she's coming here?" instead of "Is she coming here?"
Well spotted Fernando. Great question! Sometimes people don't invert questions in spoken English and they indicate questions with intonation alone. Notice his intonation was rising. If you're writing, it could be confusing to write this, and if you're taking a spoken English exam, it's best to avoid this, but you'll often hear native speakers doing this in normal conversation.
It's the same in Spanish. We only change intonation. Structure of sentences is very flexible.
Is she coming here? Can be:
¿Ella va a venir aquí?
¿Va a venir ella aquí?
¿Va a venir aquí ella?
Or even
¿Aquí va a venir ella?
And
¿Aquí ella va a venir?
All of them are correct, each one has its own emphasis.
Why you say "...key to the car.." instead of "...key of the car..."? Thanks
Great question frukk0. I can't give you a reason because I have no idea. :-) It's just what we say. Key of the car would sound very strange and formal here.
@@SimpleEnglishVideos Thanks a lot for your feedback. These small details often cause me big confusion because only native ppl can handle them so well :) hence I will learn it by memory. Sometimes the preposition "to" do sound to me like "toward something", a movement, and to my mind your sentence morphs to something like "keys toward the car" which to my foreign brain doesn't make sense. It would be great if you walked us through a lesson on how to use "of" and "to" in such cases. BTW: great lessons!!!
