Gas THEN clutch - how to move off properly

  • Gas then clutch is how you should move off in a car. This is something that many learner drivers are taught incorrectly because of sloppy, lazy instruction. I set the record straight using the official DVSA guide to driving called "Essential Skills" as well as many examples and explanations.
I could have mentioned some other points in this video, such as when I use the example of Formula One cars. You may often hear commentators talking about engines bogging down; this is when the drivers have not set the gas/clutch correctly and it causes the engine to bog down (a temporary drop in power) due to the revs not being high enough before engaging the clutch. I know that F1 cars use hand clutches, by the way. I just couldn't get one in my Fiesta to demonstrate that!
The end screen looks strange because UA-cam used to have a thing called annotations where you could put boxes around video on the screen to link to other videos but it's since changed.

For people who say that that the car in this video stalled because I lifted the clutch too quickly; you are missing the whole point of the video. Yes, SOME cars will move off with only the clutch if you take 10 seconds to lift it - by which time you're dead because all the cars coming around the roundabout have now hit you side on. The whole point is that you shouldn't have to lift the clutch slowly because doing so causes more strain on it than using the correct amount of gas does and, as mentioned above, you have to crawl away at low speed, putting yourself and everyone else in danger due to the slow getaway.
I once had an email from a motorist who said they'd been driving next to me and couldn't believe how fast my car had pulled off from some lights. I'd left them behind and how had I made a Fiesta move so quickly? They'd looked up my car up on my website and was shocked it was a 1.5 when it had moved off far more quickly than their 2.0 engine. When I asked how they moved off, guess what they said? Yes, they had only ever known to move off with the clutch and after years of having the same car, they'd only just found out the true speed it had after i told them they should be using the gas as well.
Using the clutch alone is NOT correct no matter what anyone says. It is slow, dangerous and the cause of many accidents. Using the CORRECT amount of gas (not revving it to the red line) will result in cleaner, faster getaways while drivers that just use the clutch are crawling off at 1mph scratching their heads as to why they're going so slowly.
In some cars I have had it is totally impossible to move off using the clutch only no matter how slow you lift it. 10 seconds, 20 seconds - It doesn't matter, they just stall because it can't be done. A method which only works in SOME cars (clutch only) isn't as good as a method that works in ALL cars (gas and clutch).

You are absolutely right. I am presently learning to drive and this clutch issue is really slow. My instructor insists that that's the only way you can move the car. I'm using cardrome for now . I wonder how I will cope when eventually hit the major roads with cars all around you.

Most likely you were thought in a diesel car which works a bit differently, you can move off just by using clutch in those.

If you're on a hill in a petrol car and you want to move off, the car won't dip when you lift the clutch so you need the accelerator. You'll feel no power at all and only roll back and stall so it is essential for you to have the accelerator down first. My instructor always taught me wrong but I took it up myself, to learn it properly. Hope somebody reads this and understands why you need the gas first

This is what I think the main problem is, most driving instructors buy diesel very smooth cars in order for it to be easier for learners and speed up the whole learning process and get as many ‘passes’ as possible, shows how much of a good driving instructor you are for sharing this!!

Being taught to drive properly is really important. Every car feels different anyway regardless of whether it is petrol or diesel. My car is a petrol and my instructor's car was a also a petrol, but the feel of the clutch is still completely different. The key is that my instructor was superb and she taught me to always adapt to the driving conditions, which includes the car you're driving.

  • @acanthe3

This video is spot on. I passed my test a while back (learning in a diesel car), and recently bought my first car (a 1.2L petrol). I carried forward the habit of purely using the clutch to pull off and for maneuvers, which doesn't work at all in my car. It took many times of me stalling to realise this, which could have been avoided by learning a universal method to begin with.

Thank you for this. Even 2 years after posting this video. i learnt how to drive 4 years ago, and was taught to only use the clutch when driving off. Hadnt driven since i past my test 4 years go and so i did refresher lessons with a new instructor. She told " okay set the gas then the clutch" and i went "...What?" and she looked at me amazed going " do you not know how to set your gas?" and then i explained to her that i only learnt with the clutch.
I'm annoyed with my previous instructor. i felt stupid because it was like i had to learn the basics of driving again and when i test drove a car once, with only using the clutch when taking off- i stalled so many times! the sales person got rather annoyed at me and i felt like i didnt know how to drive anymore and i just couldnt understand why i was stalling all the time.
So thank you for this! it makes me feel better now that its not just me being stupid, i was taught wrong.

This has been the main thing that's been annoying me this past few months, I was convinced it was just my lack of ability driving but I've always struggled moving off, especially on a hill! I'm learning in a petrol car and I've not once been told to use acceleration when I set off - only been told to use the clutch, it's actually been quite daunting, especially at roundabouts when you have cars racing by you and you know you're about to crawl out at a snail pace. Went in my dads car the other day (diesel) - never had an issue. Great video - thanks for the help! :)

Im in Ireland and I completed my 12 essential driver training lessons last september, with a driving instructor who never told me to use gas and clutch to take off. I booked 7 more lessons with another driving instructor who has completely revolutionised the way I look at driving, and while its easy enough to work her car/clutch etc in my mothers car which is what im practicing in, I find it seriously hard at times to take off as her clutch is very difficult and the biting point is very subtle. I find myself stalling even with the gas, and I lose my nerve so quickly. My driving test is on Thursday so im really cramming your videos before I go for practice. Thank you for these you have made an immense difference in my ability! My driving instructor was astounded at the difference in my driving between one lesson and the next after binging on your videos. Thank you!

Omg thanks so much you have literally saved me from possibly pulling out into a road and getting severely injured or even killed (no exaggeration), my instructor taught me in a diesel and never told me about giving some gas, so I passed and when I tried only using my clutch at a junction in my petrol car for the first time today I almost got hit, luckily the car swerved, iv tried out what you said and now I'm taking off fine (still need to get used to it though) but thanks so much and god bless you.

The other issue, and if I’m honest here, this applies to me! Is not listening to your instructor. Mine had a lovely new BMW 1 series, diesel, which was easy to move off by just using the clutch. He always told me to set the gas but I just took what I thought was the easy route. He even said, you don’t listen to me and keep moving off with just the clutch, you need gas and for goodness sake, make sure you get a diesel car if you refuse to take my instruction. Oops! And guess what, I’ve passed my test, first time in that lovely diesel car and now I’m looking at getting a petrol car. So I’m screwed! Thankfully, had the foresight to remember what my instructor told me and decided to find some UA-cam videos to help me understand better, hence finding myself here and watching this one. I finally get it! But it doesn’t always help when you have the lazy option with the diesel car, which makes it easy to move off incorrectly. I will have to practice this lots by going around the block and before heading into busier traffic. Great and helpful video! I now wish I had listened to my instructor more 😊

I went home and checked the internet and realised that my instructors had cheated me (feel like getting a refund). Anyways thank you for helping me to brush up on the basics so I can teach someone who is new to a standard transmission. Too many videos out there on driving stick are about "performance" techniques and not sound proper clutch and gear work. There too many kids on here burning their clutches, slamming the plates, and grinding their gears treating their road car like it's a race car. Thanks for providing good sound technique for the newcomers out there.

Im a whole ocean away but this video has finally helped me visualize the entire process. I always have had a tough time with not stalling. Some cars i had a easier time with the clutch, others, the car would stall if i wasn't precise with the gas. think knowing this, i will not stall again or much. I am looking for a stick shift car and going to check out one exactly like my current auto equipped one later on in the day.

I had no idea some cars have hill assist, you would think instructors would explain what this is even if their car hasn't got it, and yeah you're right, I've been learning in a petrol and the thing just wants to stall, giving it gas is a must, i give it a little gas then raise the clutch, soon as its up just past halfway gas goes down clutch comes right up in one motion, if you don't do this right the car will stutter, stall or the revs will be way to high while the car isn't moving, my instructor never bothers to even explain, I've had to figure all this out on my own.

i’ve only had 8 hours of lessons. i’m in a diesel and been taught clutch then accelerate and yesterday i bought my first car a vw polo e 1.2 and when i tried pulling off i must have stalled it 5 times and then my dad told me this way and i was fine. all instructors do is teach you how to pass in the vehicle you’re in not actually drive

+DanL Baps There is no reply button on your comment but if you're down a hill then it depends if you start in 1st or 2nd gear, how steep the hill is and how the car handles. Sometimes when downhill it's not necessary to have the gas on in but you'd have to be careful to connect the clutch at the right time - rolling too fast or slow as you lift it could make it stall or jump.

Wow. Just doing my driving lessons in Ireland,on a 1.4 petrol car and the instructor tells me to use just the clutch alone, and it works i hardly stall the engine. But after 7 lessons i bought my own car,a 1.1 Hyundai Getz and i do the same thing..clutch only and i stall the engine so many times that i'm afraid to drive (only had the car for 4 days). I'm waiting for my friend to come from work and i will try this with the gas,it does make sense what you say ..but i didn't knew.

Good advice. You're absolutely correct. I'm currenty learning to drive and my instructor insists I give no gas when moving off. Result: I sometimes stall and generally move off like a granny. I will ask for a new instructor if he doesn't allow me to give some gas in my next lesson.

I felt like an idiot when I bought my first car after passing. I was taught clutch only.. never gas! I learnt in a diesel. My first car was petrol. I took it for a test drive and stalled right outside the garage! humiliated I got my mum to test drive it instead for me. I had to learn the gas and clutch method "universal method" and haven't looked back. That petrol car was good for the tip and went back to a diesel but kept the gas and clutch method and storm past most bigger engine cars at the lights! Listen to this man, he is good. Wish he was my instructor. I had three & a first time pass. But wasted many many lessons because of useless instructors not teaching correctly, and repeating lessons 7 maybe 8 times!

since learning and passing in a Merc c220 (amg) diesel, I've had to relearn how to set off from 1st. This video helped. Now I'm setting a little acceleration and letting up the clutch and I set off smooth as, in a petrol or a diesel.
not sure why I wasn't taught that in my lessons, because besides that I received excellent instruction.

Thank you so much for this , I’ve driven manual for three days but this was my problem . Starting off too damn slow when I’m at traffic lights or roundabout causing it to almost stall or begging for gas . Because I was doing it wrong and relying on my clutch to take me forward . But now I put gas then clutch and I move off way quicker than I did .

passed my test around 3 days ago and had being learning in a 1.4 diesel instructor car. just got my first car (2 litre turbo petrol) and found it super difficult to pull away without stalling. my instructor hadn’t told me much about adding gas to get higher revs because you could pull away with just the clutch so easily. it’s a slow process to learn a new car but i’m getting to grips with adding gas and clutch release but it’s still slow none the less

  • @strongleg5434

I'm learning on three cars (two instructors and one family car) two diesels and one petrol, i had instructor on a petrol car tell me to rev it to 1500 then release clutch, but then i went to the second instructor on diesel and when i did that he asked what i was doing, and that i don't need to gas it until the clutch is down, he basically taught me around his car not in universal for all cars, yes you could move with just clutch on his, but then when i went to the petrol i had to apply gas before clutch, it's like a juggling act, but it gives me a good lesson i think because i learn that two different engines can work in different ways.

Good video, as a newly qualified Instructor I was taught to teach by the book. But so many of my students still pull away without gas. I have to start again with some. I also have a 1.0 Fiesta which requires to set the gas to "a lively hum" before finding the bite.

All you have to do is get him to read Essential Skills. That's the book written by the DVSA where it clearly says that you press the gas and then the clutch. The very fact he said "not in my car" shows he hasn't got a clue what he's doing. Are you going to be driving his car after passing or your own?

i wouldn't recommend that anyway? I found the bite with not enough gas and the car stalled. I usually power the car to about 1.5r/2.0 (dependent on slope), then slowly remove off the clutch

Answer to your question: Because F1 drivers aren't concerned about the life of their car's engine/clutch beyond a season or a few races. It costs a lot of money if you end up messing up your car, not everyone has millions of dollars to spend on repairs.
