Same here I'm still in shock. I can't wait for more hype videos to come out about this run. The whole run was just too good to be true. He was down 0-2 to the best zerg in the world then beat him 3 games in a row, then took out the best protoss in the world, then won 4 straight against Maru my mind is still blown.
I've watched a lot of IEM's - this was the best one I can remember. Edge of your seat stuff, first TvT final ever, a Cinderella story, a winner's speech even Catz would be proud of, Oliviera in tears, Smix in tears, Kalaris in tears - an absolutely wonderful tournament from beginning to end. If you missed it - go and watch it, you won't regret it.
Dude this guy is insane… I’m Korean and I loved watching Koreans win at tournaments. But when I saw Oliveira won, my jaw dropped… his builds are not something super new or anything but his micro ability… dang another level. Huge respect for this guy! If you see Maru got beaten 4:1 that says something.
Watching Reynor, HerO, and then finally Maru, visibly crushed once they came to the realisation how fucking determined and stone-cold this boy is, blew me away. Expecially Maru man, this dude almost never cracks, but you could see it sinking in and how he couldn't process exactly what just happened. Reynor was twitching like a muppet in an utter disbelief.. .
Part of what made it the best tournament for me was how he beat the best player in each race. He didn't get an easy run. He beat the best Zerg (arguably), then the best protoss and finally, the final boss, Maru. The Maru games were the most impressive for me, considering Maru is the best TvT player in history. I'm sure other people felt the same way after game 1, where it was a Maru stomp. After, I was like, "well, Olivera played really well, but it's kinda a letdown now." Then he just started crushing Maru, deflecting every push sent his way. Great games.
This was the craziest moment I have ever witnessed in star craft history. Oliveira came out of no where and decided he was going to beat not only Reynor and Hero but Maru in the grand finals! I’ve only just started watching Oliveira during the 2v2 with him and Serral. What an ending to IEM!
You should definitely do some more, I caught his whole playoff run live and I've been so excited to see reactions from sc2 youtubers. What a performance
Love the commentary! The context you provide for these series is why I'd rather watch this than the full game VOD.

Zombiegrub was going crazy, the original video is worth watching. The game was amazing, they should have a prize for the best game in the tournament and this game would win it. Reinor gave it all, full aggression, non-stop. It reminds me of the first Rocky movie, Oliviera simply waited through the aggression. his focus was almost inhuman.
i was hoping for a special episode. this tournament was out of this world, Oliveira has been one of my favourite Terrans for some TIME now. There's something magical about his playstyle, I'm so happy everything fell into place for him.
thanks for doing this mate... like... really, thanks! I love having your videos in my suggestions despite me playing starcraft or watching starcraft content on and off for basically a decade now. There have been years I've never looked at sc, but your videos in the recent month/year are always a joy to watch. The way you present them, the insane skill level you have, it's just a premium combination. Thanks mate, thanks a lot.
He changed his name after Charles Oliveira, an underdog MMA fighter who went on to become champion recently, lots of similarities between their careers.
awesome ! thanks for insights - i watched it lived and was very happy for him - and see someone win with showing passion n emotions - damn cool story - thanks for cover and support oliveira =) , greetings
Muchas gracias! for your explanation, I was able to see his semi final against Hero and final against Maru live and was very impressed at how he make those monsters look like they were not playing right.
Great stuff uThermal! When ZG was going nuts in game 2 with that mission impossible last push, it actually got me to betray my race and start rooting for this Terran. I was like most people though - great run, but you will get slaughtered next round. Love to see an analysis of those finals. After game 1 it looked like Maru was going to curb stomp Oliveira to the ground as hard as he did Ragnarok.
This was the first tournament I was able to watch from Day 1 all the way to the Grand Finals. 12 years later and Starcraft 2 is still an epic game with an amazing scene.
That was not planned. The reason why he turned back was because he saw Maru's army had a pathing issue causing half of his tanks to be out of position, so he instantly jumped on it.
@@darkice241 Wow you are so cool. Nobody, Nobody, Nobody said it was Planned..... It was very nice juke and finishing blow in very nice game. Anything else?
Reynor was tearing his hair out in the end... he couldn't believe what just happened. Unbelievable matches. And then he beat Hero and Maru almost flawlessly... they couldn't believe it too.
22:15, It's nice getting some aussie recognition, but... we don't call them shrimps, we call them prawns, and we don't put them on the barbie... Maybe try 'A snag on the barbie' lol. Snag meaning sausage, though when someone says they're gonna get a snag or eat a snag, they mean the sausage placed diagonally on a piece of white bread, bonus points if it's from Bunnings. Greetings from Brisvegas.
This was great! I love the challenges too, but it's a lot of fun to hear your commentary when you don't have to multitask so much and you also know what's coming. Loved the commentary. IMHO IEM should offer you a spot as a commentator if they haven't already
Definitely do more! You should also see if Oliveira will come on a do something silly for your channel. Everyone wants more of him and it would be fun to see him try Penguin brothers or mass ghosts.
Thanks uThermal for the analysis, you might not know or notice this but ever since watching these analysis series I have been climbing in ranks. and it is also very entertaining as well.
Could be cheating... Or he's just improved a lot and played near perfection at the perfect time. Time will tell, if Oliveria/Time keeps winning and playing at this level, then he is legit.
@@blue-phoenix115 he said he felt like cheating, you know, like Flash. The most important thing is he said there’s no way he could lose as long as he played as usual, the mentality of a stronger player. You can see that in all his matches against the big 3, very patient.
I just love how dilligent he is. He always spreads his tanks, rebuilds turrets, pre splits, knows when to attack, when to retreat, doesn't overextend, knows when and what to build, etc. This man is a walking textbook.
It must have been the best comeback ever. Being an under dog, 2 sets down and match set, fighting the strongest zerg in the tournament. Even the best and most experienced players would have panicked, he just hold his ground and building the right counter units methodologically and almost flawless defence and micro.
He beat top 4 players with EPT points at IEM Kato. Imo, he had the hardest matchups of anyone and still won. Insane 1 South Korea Terran Maru 3,965 - Finals 2 South Korea Protoss herO 3,950 - Semi Finals 3 France Terran Clem 3,945 - Group 4 Italy Zerg Reynor 3,124 - Quater finals
If someone is wondering how Oliveira was able to pull this off, I have one secret to share with you guys. The person Oliveira had as a practice partner for this tournament was someone little known dude called Joona Sotala, also known as Serral. Before the World Championships, Oliveira was playing a 2v2 tournament with Serral as his partner and in another tournament earlier Serral had just suffered a crushing defeat against Maru. I believe Serral wanted someone to practice TvZ with to crush Maru in the finals with and since he was already friends with Oliveira, he could practice with him, after all... Oliveira learning his new plays and strategies isn't that big of a deal, Serral could easily beat him as he did. It just turns out that it wasn't TvZ Serral needed to worry about and that it would be Oliveira that would get more out of those practice sessions.
I think everyone is down for more commentary on these matches, you pin point some technicalities that other caster sometimes wont. His matches against Reynor, Hero and Maru were insane.. about to go watch the earlier rounds.
I used to love watching H-to-the-Usky-Husky, and I really missed his SC2 content ... until uThermal. I would be very happy to see Thermie do more episodes like this one, since he really knows what makes for an epic match and can give us the understanding of WTH is going on when all s*** breaks loose and there's chaos all over the screen.
Oliveira's masterclass ! Was amazing to watch live while he pushed through the brackets ! This particular game though was probably the tipping point for him and most likely the match of the tournament.
Man, Oliveira outplayed literally everyone he face, it was incredible to see. If you could go over a couple of his games against HeroMarine that would be awesome. To me Oliveira just had him on build order almost every game and I'd love to hear your insights on it.
Not to mention, in my opinion, Heromarine has the best TvT in Europe. Maru also didn't perform poor. Might have been not the best performance ever in the finals, but Oliviere just played insane that finals. No mistakes.
Tbf I think some people simply underestimate him. Like reynor for example went for moves expecting him to be a bit slower. The matches later in the tournament were well won though
I was just gonna suggest you a series where you analyze those crazy games, give us some pro insight! You are the best, you know what we want! Please make a week of this content! Raynor, Hero, Maru.
Excellent pick for a game to highlight and deconstruct. Would love more of this but, if I can be extra-greedy, also keep up with all the regular content!
Yes bro I come back to SC thanks to your videos I'm watching from like few weeks love the commentary man. So far I finish campaign. Looks I'm too old and slow but I remember the times when I was running marine micro maps no mouse on my IBM touchpad good old times... By the way first SC tournament I watch and yes that Oliviera! That kid is so great even tried that cheese with Serral.
Imagine your a male ping pong player from Korea. You train on your own. Your country doesn’t bother build a team. And you end up beating the Chinese and become champion.
I haven't watched a tournament cast in quiet a long time... After watching this I will now head to watch and listen to his entire run! What a great story... I have been watching (and slightly playing) Starcraft for over a decade. Runs like this do not happen when you have such GIANTS in the field. Being rank 21 is AMAZING but, when you are playing against the best in the world where the skill gap from rank 15 to rank 3 is a big grandmaster and masters in ranked leagues (numbers I made up to give context) where you only have to win ONE game NOT a SERIES... It shows how remarkable his run really is... OR maybe a new TIME and challenger has risen to the god tier rank! I guess only TIME will tell...
Honestly TvZ is my favorite matchup i only watch starcraft and barely play it myself but its so cinematic when the zerg swarm crashes into the tanklines it rly feels like a uphill battle especially for the terran but that changes once the zerg runs out and struggles to fight for extra bases (like u said on a 50/50 split the terran basicly wins if the zerg plays aggressive like that). It seems to me as a viewer that if the zerg doesnt manage to completely run the terran over orbitals will basicly always ensure the terrans comeback as they just lift up during the attack and drop mules after.
Sir. I see a big man with a big heart when I watch you. "Time" was the underdog NOBODY expected. You guys trained together in places like Korea, and he bought you lunch in exchange for your pro-tips. You helped him fulfill his dream, and this means so much more especially when Blizzard fucked all Chinese fans.
Love you thermy, your audio was a little echoey in this vid just so you know. I haven't noticed it before; i wonder if it's because the game sound was quieter than normal. Either way great commentary and I still watched it all the way through just to hear what you had to say.
Only three minutes in and his reaper micro is so entertaining, you forget that he has to be macroing at the same time. What came to mind just now, is while watching the commentary live, how several of his Korean opponents mentioned that Oliveira is one of their regular training partners. Can't help but wonder if that is one of the contributing factors in him having the confidence on taking them down even though he was only rank 21 in EPT points and staying calm enough to beat Reynor after being behind 0:2 (I don't know how often they train together but they are on the same team). Anecdote: this is the first time I've watched a "world championship" tournament, so glad I chose this one, only other tournament I bothered to watch was a DreamHack Valencia where there was a similar upset (I should watch them more often, maybe I'm the cause?), can't remember who it was but it was also a Terran who then got shut down hard by -Serral- in the end. *Edit:* it was MarineLorD at DreamHack Open 2016, who originally thought he could go down to the beach on the last day after getting knocked out but instead 3:0ed in succession Bly, Stephano, Neeb, and Snute (who 3:0ed up-and-coming Reynor just before that) before ending in 0:4 against Nerchio. How time flies!
you know he is teaming with serral in chinese 2v2 tournament. Back in days, he has to buy beers for innovation, TY, Byun and Dark for training. When he ask clem for practice, Clem said fuck off. No much pro do this for practice. Because he is from China, KR players wanna prepare gsl with him now. yea, I was a fanboy. Glad that he took the world champ. I have watched several downs in him. But He proved himself.
I'm double commenting cos feck it. I'd recommend doing the whole series, especially game 2. You can see the point where Oliveira finds his groove, a switch just flipped. He lost that game to one baneling. Best almost comeback game I've seen in years.
There's actually a small psychological advantage for loosing your first 2 games. You come to terms with loosing and it makes you relaxed, since in your mind you have already seen 'the worst that could happen'. So even as you make mistakes or things don't go smoothly, it doesn't distract you. While for the other player it makes getting that final win harder, as they loose game three and game fore the pressure only builds and the moral drops more, while the moral for the comeback player lifts even higher. It's not the end all be all, but it's a small factor
UThermal: he seems to play the best style per matchup, so he's not really a player that either turtles against everything, or cheeses against everyone me: mhm.. UThermal: y'know, normally you would say well why doesn't everyone do that, that's perfect that's ideal me: uh huh UThermal: but then, as you can know for example from my games... I'm a little bit better when I'm aggressive- *me: TRUUUUUUU*
That was absolutely nutty. Especially considering how close Reynor was to closing it out multiple times, before throwing Ultras and lings into the meat-grinder over and over. What a crazy tournament!
When I was watching this live, I had no idea it was really TIME. I thought it was some weird mafia match-fixing thing where they just took some nobody off the street to with the tournament and make a fortune betting on him.
I kept betting Oliveira through the tournament, 7.5 odds against Reynor, 4.5 against Hero and 7.0 against Maru. The bookies didn't learn after the first upset ^^
Watched his entire run Live - I was losing my mind. So happy for the guy you could tell his dream came true. Best IEM I've ever watched

was about to ask you about a review for Oliveira run yesterday, was amazing :]
StarCraft version of Marciano
Fantastic commentary, cheers :)
I'm double commenting cos feck it. I'd recommend doing the whole series, especially game 2. You can see the point where Oliveira finds his groove, a switch just flipped. He lost that game to one baneling. Best almost comeback game I've seen in years.
More casting of Oliveira's games this tournament!!
Really liked the analysis, please do more!
It's always awesome to an underdog suprising everyone, well fought.
I was pretty amazed to find out he was essentially coached by Innovation, the guy nicknamed the freebie smashed IEM, very cool to watch
UThermal: he seems to play the best style per matchup, so he's not really a player that either turtles against everything, or cheeses against everyone
me: mhm..
UThermal: y'know, normally you would say well why doesn't everyone do that, that's perfect that's ideal
me: uh huh
UThermal: but then, as you can know for example from my games... I'm a little bit better when I'm aggressive-
*me: TRUUUUUUU*
That was absolutely nutty. Especially considering how close Reynor was to closing it out multiple times, before throwing Ultras and lings into the meat-grinder over and over. What a crazy tournament!
Really enjoyed this one!
I like the description
Great commentary!
You take the planetary on your 4th to keep it safe. I take it because my macro is too bad to use up all the energy from my other orbitals.
Probably the greatest underdog story in all esports
love your analysis!
Please do more of these!
Thank you Uthermal about talking about his success! You are the first one who is talking about it!
Awesome underdog victory!
Love this type of content!
seen itnlive, still a great analisis to watch without all these emotions :D reynor looked broken during this game, his mind set was devestated
Amazing game and commentary, thanks for the nice vidéo !
