@@TA-wg9oiBack 47 years ago, it was deemed sufficient to the people who designed and the people who approved it. Cargo ships of this size going thru the harbor, were unheard of in 1972, when the bridge was started and still hadnt gotten much bigger when it opened in 1977. It's the state of Maryland's fault for not appropriating money for barrier improvements. That being said, it would still take a helluva barrier to hold back a 948 ft cargo ship loaded with 4700 TEU's, and weighing 95K tons (empty). And the DALI is considered mid-size. But hey, let's send all our money to Ukraine, the Gaza strip, Iraq and so on, while shutting down our energy companies. Doom and gloom is in charge. @@janetphillips2875 That's not true. A steel arch continuous truss bridge has little support from collapse so being 'deemed sufficient' would come down to cost! The port exports a lot of stuff. If we refuse imports, our exports will be refused. Domino sugar imports raw sugar and refines it in Baltimore. Should everyone be fired since you don't want any imports?
If they are not using shoreline powers then you'll see them trying to lift beyond capacity. Not using the support of the wreckage to winch from and tie back to with the smaller and most dangerous submerged parts then lifting a corner of the most critical point with the cranes then tow it with shoreline resources, hopefully to be used in some ways in the reconstruction and final defenses to protect the new structures so they don't have to move the selected parts but a few hundred yards. Right now they need docking space and working platforms capable of some rough water, the stuff to make what they immediately need is right there, use it to it's best possible. It's been paid for once already. Be safe.

Many of the same people who said it would take months and months to open the channel are now reversing their opinions, but only after those tasked with the responsibility and present on the scene have had an opportunity to survey what can actually be done, and have provided the Maryland Governor and the mainstream media with a plan and realistic time lines. It would be nice if we listened to those responsible with this daunting task as opposed to being bombarded by outside opinions that range from impossible, to dredge a new 50ft channel, to it will takes months and months to complete. It boils down to those that know, and those that know not. My vote is for those on site that are in the know, as real experts don’t guess.
Just think, Gov. Wes Moore you could have all those added taxes from DC land if you incorporated it back to Maryland. Helping DC get it's statehood it wants, and you wouldn't need Federal money to rebuild this bridge you really shouldn't rebuild.
Love all these arm chair quarter backs. Talking like they know all that needs to be done without seeing the issues there. the debris is way too complicated to say for sure how soon they can open the channel up,with the concrete, asphalt and steel all smashed together and visibility near zero ..
Didn't listen to the garbage. Can ANYONE tell me why we need "experts" to weigh in on the channel opening? Anyone at all? You can slip barges in all day long under the rest of the bridge but we need "experts" to weigh in on this? WHY?

It will take them to Christmas to clear bridge to maney 🍩 brakes only got 60.000.000 dollers to do job if got english firm to do it it would of cost 30.000.000. pound and ships would b going in and dock workers would b back at work but got American workers doing it so it will take to Christmas with lots of 🍩 brakes
THE NEW BRIDGE IS GOING TO COST $15 PER PASSENGER CARS $20 PER SUV AND $25 PER PICKUP !! THEN $30 PER AXLE AFTER THAT FOR THE TOLL! IT WILL BE PAID FOR IN 3 YEARS REALISTICALLY BUT THE GOVERNMENT'S CALCULATION WILL TAKE 65YEARS TO PAY IT OFF!
I wonder if he knows what happen it is stupid for him to even go all he will do is give gov money to fix for a vote he will use a teleprompter to know what to say I hope he does not fall and get wet
As an ex marylander, this move doesn't surprise me one bit. First off, this isn't anywhere to be a poor state. I should know that by having paid hefty taxes, see my opening line if you're not following me so far. Bmore isn't a poor city despite the image and the dynamics it reflects. Just that bridge alone generates millions on tolls every year. And I've crossed it as recently as the week before the incident. And let me tell ya, it wasn't structurally safe and in dire need of repair 20 years ago. But the greedy commie Republic of md can't miss out on that cheddar. Even if it supercedes safety. There are a few of us, the brighter ones who've jumped the Potomac river for an economic change for the better in our lives. And those of you sheeples who enjoy denying yourselves the ability to maintain repairs to your vehicles, house and livelihood. Well, stay in md, you deserve it.

To empty the cargo ship, just put store signs all over it and the shoplifters will do the rest.
