Finally got my Sigma 1.4 trio and loving it with this a6600! Thanks for all the info. One suggestion about touch functionality you mentioned at 21:00 - if you set the "Function of Touch Operation" setting to "Touch Tracking", it'll override your current focus area setting (e.g. Wide, Zone etc.) and enable tracking on the subject you touched regardless of your previous focus area setting. But if you set it to "Touch Focus", it'll respect whether you're currently in a tracking or non-tracking mode, so that if you're in a non-tracking mode (e.g. Wide, Zone etc.), it'll select a spot in the frame to focus on, but if you're in a tracking mode (e.g. Tracking: Wide, Tracking: Zone, Tracking: Expand Flexible Spot), it'll start tracking the subject you chose on your screen. Best of both worlds. Just my preference after some experimenting last weekend taking some dog pictures!
Been very happy with the 6600 and come to like it even more as time has gone on. It has many functions I don't need/use, but it's a lot of camera for the $.
I was going to the a6400 from the a6000. I’m sold on the a6600 now. Next paycheck I’m pulling the trigger on that. Thank you dude for all the knowledge on the a6600. I can’t wait for slap my sigma’s and G master’s on it.
I sold my A6400 and replaced it with A6600 in January, 2020. I took it to my vacation in Hawaii recently. I can say tell you that I felt no regret making that replacement decision. This is specially for the bigger battery and multiple custom buttons which make the shooting stills a great experience.
I just bought my a6600 to replace the a6000 which broke. I thought the same regarding price, however, given the benefits (vs. the a6000) I know I can use this camera for many years and in many ways (stills and vid) so the price became a nonissue. I didn't go full-frame because I have a few lenses already for APSC and while stepping up to an a7III would not be much more, then there is the significant additional cost of FE lens. Great review, really appreciate the effort and info.
Great review Jason! Filled with examples and the best overview of the A6600 I've seen. Also, quick and rapid menu info. I just picked my A6600 up. Coming from an X-T1, which I still have, but I thought it best to make the jump to Sony now since my lens collection was not too large with Fuji. Now I have (also) a large selection of lenses with Sony! From G lens, and Zeiss, to Sigma, Tamron and ither quality lenses. I'm starting with the Sony 18-135mm for now. I was amazed sampling this same setup on an A6400 in store. The near-far and back focus speed is off the charts. Taking a few hits from Fuji with a lesser res viewfinder and in-camera raw processing, but overall, the jump particularly with focus speed on the A6600/A6400 more than makes up for it. After all, the in focus results cannot be matched by Fuji, or others IMO. Awesome review! P.s I got the A6600 used with 200 shots, so it costed the same as a A6400 with same lens. Nice! ; )
Thanks for an awesome video. I'm just getting to use my A6600 in 2024. I would love more how-to videos, especially in manual mode but dumbed down for us beginners (how to adjust, ISO, aperture and shutter speed for video and photo) so I can really get the most out of this camera. Also your guides are awesome!
Hey there, I don't have that video for the A6600, but it's the same exact concept with the A74 which is what I used in this video on that exact topic: ua-cam.com/video/fyEeonlyeqI/v-deo.html I think you will get what you are looking for in this video, if not let me know!
@@Jason_Hermann Thank you so much! Honestly,, you're one of my favourite how-to UA-camrs. I'm just kicking off with my channel and content creation and I really appreciate how in depth your videos are. Thank you so much!
You are correct about why they would do that about the buffer size. I never knew it was less. What a bummer. Overall an extremely good camera. I couldn't be happier with it
I was going to get the a6400 but I was able to get the a6600 on sale for college students at B&H for $918. My first Sony camera, I hope the lack of flash doesn't really effect me.
Awesome to hear and I don't think you will miss the flash to much. I very rarely use one since I started using off camera flash. It's hard to go back and I would just rather use natural lighting most of the time now if I don't want to carry around the lighting gear. I do hear ya though, because it is a nice feature to have in the real world, when the best flash quality is not necessary, but the flash is really needed.
Instead of carrying 2 extra batteries as you would with an A6400. Carry one battery and buy an HVL-FM20 flash. It's a way better flash and won't suffer from medium to large lens shadows it's under $100.
Im thinking of buying this camera, i have the sony a6000 right now, im only going to use it for photography, not video, do you think the camera is too expensive for just vacation pictures from time to time, would i be vetter off with the sony 6400, or 6500?
Hello! Your videos have been very helpful! I want to set up custom buttons but am not sure how to do that?? Do you have something on that? My goal: one button preset for fast-moving wildlife activity. The other button for lowlight jungle situations. Thank you!
Hey Larry, you would want to use the Custom Camera Modes for that. The 1 and 2 on the top mode dial is what I mean... See here: MENU → (Camera Settings1) → [ / Memory] → desired number. helpguide.sony.net/ilc/1940/v1/en/contents/TP0002647359.html Basically you set the camera up exactly how you want it, and then register those settings as one of the custom modes. Then when you change the mode dial to that all the settings will instantly change to what you set. I hope that helps, Jay
@@Jason_Hermann Awesome! I'm sorting through all sorts of recommendations and picking out what to start with. I'm learning a lot and soon will head to Sumatra to use what I'm learning! Low light, jungle conditions, orangutan and birds...sounds perfect! Thank you!
Thank you for your review. I own the sony a6600 and am stuck in being able to download the firmware 1.10 update. Here's my issue: When I go to MENU, page 4 in set-up, USB CONNECTION is greyed out and set for "MASS STORAGE." This results in a failed connection to my computer for the download. I have a number of usb micro to C cables and they seem to be working. It was suggested that my "port" in the camera is bad and/or I need to try another USB cable. Regardless, a trouble shooter here on You Tube said that in her case because the USB CONNECTION was set to "MASS STORAGE" it needed to be changed to "AUTO." Great idea, but when I went to USB CONNECTION in my MENU settings I could NOT change the setting of MASS STORAGE to anything else, because for some inexplicable reason, the usb connection section is greyed out. If someone has an answer to this issue and how to reset the settings to allow for a change to auto in the USB Connection setting please let me know :)

I just ordered one. I have a question. This camera record 8bit color depth videos internally. Is that also true for external video recording or will I be able to record in 10bits?
I had no idea my camera could do all that stuff. I've been using the stock 18-135mm lense and I was immediately disappointed on how little you can zoom in for closeups so someone said to get a different lense. I'm assuming the sigma 30mm would be good for closeups?
Actually it depends how close? You would need a "macro lens" for really close-up... The Sony 30mm f/3.5 Macro Lens geni.us/OheEd or the Sony 50mm f/2.8 Macro lens geni.us/hDAV would be great options for really close-up...
Jay, I have just bought the a6600, my question is, when I flip the screen all the way up (for selfies or vlogging), the image on the lcd screen is upside down! Am I doing something wrong or is there a setting to rotate the image to the correct orientation?
Then, I was looking for a small get up and go camera (shoot and preview) to supplement my main Nikon system. The Sony a6xxx series body design got my nod and I acquired the A6000 (used) with only a 20mm pancake lens attached to it. Later, I got a6300 (used) attaching same pancake lens. I’m now waiting for the hype and price of the a6600 to settle down. I like the bigger battery and the larger grip effect. Also, the top plate is cleaner and sturdier without the built in flash I seldom use in my other a6xxx camera.
Will primarily be using for video do you think I should invest in a flash? Outside meetings at night but will have some lighting around also. What lenses? Where’s the link for the 600mm lens?
@@Jason_Hermann hi Jason, I was wondering if you might know why the edge software asks to scan code every time to send an image to smartphone. I’ve tried everything. Asks each time. Thank you for any help.
It definitely has some green cast on the skin tones. Is it possible to tinker with the jpeg output before the jpg is created in camera to make it more like the canon skin tones which are more pleasing?
Hello I'd like to buy this camera but the stabilization issue makes me hesitate... What can you tell me about the stabilization please? I'd like to use it for vlogging with 16mm sigma 1.4 Thanks
@@AlfisiOfficial well, based on that Test the Fuji seams to do a way better job! I have not used the Fuji myself though so I can't say much more than that. The Sony worked really good for me when I reviewed, but not as good as that Fuji looks in that particular test.
Yes, the full frame A7 III has noticeable better High ISO performance. both cameras are 24mp, but the full frame sensor on the a7III is much larger, so the individual pixels on the sensor are larger/ better...
I had a question: I am going to live stream using my A6600 camera. The small USB cable that comes with the camera to charge ( im not sure what its called what type of cable it is) ...is there a longer one that i can purchase somewhere ? Have an old NEX6 and was considering an upgrade but now I’m torn for a small upgrade to another APSC or just keep it for portability and then buy an a7iii or a7iv for a bigger upgrade for local fun
I'm constantly looking at the A6600 now that it has a bigger battery for video but the 4k video image wobble keeps putting me off. How do you shoot hand held to avoid that terrible bending video effect. I have watched many A6600 videos in 4K and I guess for some it doesn't matter but for my taste the slow sensor update in 4k doesn't look very good. This would be a hybrid camera for family outings and love the new 20mm lens which would be my ideal focal length of 30mm on crop.
That requires knowing how to use the lens aperture in relation to focal length and distance to the subject. Check out this highly detailed tutorial video I made to learn how all that works: ua-cam.com/video/lt2Kp-2mCHA/v-deo.html
Great video, as always! Thank you for information about a6500! I just ordered for $798)) using a6000 last few years, wanted an upgrade with Ibis , but a6600 much more expensive for me
Excellent review, Jay - much to cover. Perhaps dividing into two parts would have made it easier to digest. Have the A6600 and love it - longer battery, eye-af, my menu, but most of all the seldom touted but (for me) much appreciated “touch to release shutter”. That last feature is a bonus for from the hip shooting street and event photog. - worthy of a separate tutorial in my opinion. (Feature is a first in the A6xxx and A7xxx lines.). Must be in wide focus area to use touch to fire shutter, but I suppose that makes sense. The touch to release shutter icon on the monitor takes some getting used to (close to gray). Custom button recall setting hold (from A7iii) also a plus and would be a valuable tutorial topic. Nice pics - wondered if breweries would offer good photo ops (several breweries in my neck of the woods - Charlotte, NC - I’ve yet to tour).
Hi Paul and yes there is so much to cover indeed ;) I appreciate the feedback and I agree about the touch to release shutter mode focus mode getting it's own tutorial. That little touch to release icon is really hard to see for sure!
I have the a6600 with the sigma 18 - 35mm and the focus is constantly hunting. On my a6500 the autofocus works fine with this lens. You think it is the lens?
Hi Jay, are you sure that Imaging Edge requires .jpg files to transfer? I transfer .arw files to my iPhone all the time with my RX10m4 and RX100m7. The app transfers them as .jpg but does the conversion internally during the transfer.
Hi Jay, I love all your videos. I just shot a few seconds video of my friend riding her horse and took a bunch of pictures they all transferred to my computer but not the videos what am I doing wrong? thank you Diane
@@Jason_Hermann ty Jay. I don't have a Mac but I think I need the cable that came with the camera when I insert the SD card nothing shows other than jpg and when I went to my movie it shows standby so maybe I didn't stop taping correctly and that is why it isn't showing on the SD card. When I get home from my travels I will try it again with the transfer cable. ❤
Even if u said the doors are open to full frame but haven't u consider the lens of full frame cost 30 to 50 percent more than apsc lenses? Im someone who likes to collect lens so apsc is a cheaper alternative to me. I mean I could just buy a a7iii and one lens but I couldn't live with just a full frame body and a lens. I needed more lens in my arsenal for different situation. So apsc is the way to go for me.
Full frame lenses clearly cost more, but what is important to keep in mind is many users have multiple camera bodies. Many having full frame and aps-c bodies, so it's good to know you can use full Frame lenses on aps-c bodies is all I meant ;) All the best, Jay
The reason I got the a6600 is starnge. had bought extra batteries for my a7iii . I did not realize with the Z battery I dont need so many spares. Then someone was selling the a6600 at a very cheap price because he lost the battery and accessories which I did not need anyway. :-)
As of today which camera would you recommend for someone who wanna do both video and photo between the 6600 at 1150 euro body only and the a7c at 1650 body only ? which one is best as a longterm investment since i live in Germany and the resale value is not as in USA etc.
Well I personally would rather have the full frame A7C for the better image quality/ larger sensor, but the lenses in general are larger, heavier, and more expensive than the APS-C lenses you could use for the A6600. Based on that it is a hard decision for sure.
@Jay SonyAlphaLab I love your UA-cam videos. I have a question I was hoping you could help me out with. I’m trying to buy a camera with pro photography and pro 4K video recording with no crop (full screen). I like the sony A6600 you reviewed. But one down fall about that is the shutter when moving side to side, the buffering, and crop when shooting 4K . My budget is about $2000 to $2500. Do you have any recommendations? Or do you think the A6600 will do just fine? I do UA-cam vlogs, and photography but I wanna start shooting cinema type videos! I really appreciate it!
Hi Tony and I appreciate the kind words ;) As far as cameras go, you have a ton to choose from these days. The larger sensor cameras like the A6600 will certainly yield you excellent results. Another option which is on the higher end of your budget would be the A7 III. If you don't require stabilization the A6400 is a fantastic option and will give you extra money for lenses and a stabilization gimbal if you need that.
Jay, would you please consider doing a video on tethering? In my case, I want to tether the a6600 to an iPad so that clients can view images in real time and ideally I can transfer images to the iPad via USB (in real time if possible - even if just JPEGs). I may be asking too much. Any insights you can provide would be much appreciated. Cheers!
Other than using the imaging edge mobile app, which is not ideal, I'm not sure how to do tethering without using the new desktop app here: support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/app/imagingedge/en/ Do you have the abbility to use a desktop or Laptop? If so that would be the way to go. You could use the Imaging Edge Mobile App with the Ipad, but then you would be controlling the camera from the iPad. There might be a way to do it, but I would have to play around with the app more in that scenario.

hello. question. is there a way I can use a battery grip on my a6600? I know we can use them on the a6600 because it take the z batteries now but I don't think you can remove the battery door on the a6600. Any info you can give me?

Nice review for menu system. I have just bought Sony A6600, after using Canon 200D for two years. Which videos you recommend me to start properly with Sony A6600, doing amateur photography, playing with objects and using macro and low light photography?

@@Jason_Hermann I think you did not get my question. I checked your suggested links. I have used Canon EOS 200D and have a good grip on all the functions. I needed links of your videos to understand and start properly using Sony A6600. Thanks
Hi Jay, really good review mate. Can I just ask. If I'm using this at home as a point and shoot in my studio, can I connect this camera to my computer via wifi and view my photos as I take them on my computer and have full control over what to do with them via my desktop? Sorry it's been a while since I was in the camera game with my last camera being the Canon 40D That camera didn't have this function but the later Canon models do. I don't want to upgrade to another Canon but am loving what I'm seeing with this a6600 and am thinking it's the way to go. I just think this wifi option would be a really helpful feature. Cheers.
Hey jay, great video! Would you recommend the 16-55 2.8 lens with this? Or would you recommend just sticking to that 1.4 sigma and have the cheaper kit lens? Any thoughts you have on the 16-55 lens would be very helpful. Thank you.
It all depends what you are going to use it for. Hard to say without knowing this. I own the sigma trio and the 16-55 2.8 and to be honest I use them all but in different situations. When I shoot events I start with the 2.8 simply cause of that zoom. It's nice being able to catch that moment with having to get closer to you subject. Once night creeps in I switch to the sigmas and get closer to people and start shooting portrait style images at 1.4. That's just an example. I don't shoot video but I would do research on auto focus if you are going that route. The sigma 30 gets "confused" sometimes and it is not as fast as the other lenses. The 2.8 is a machine. Super fast. Again. I don't know what / how you want to use the camera so just throwing it all out there :)
Mr. GP Hi, You wrote you use it mostly for stills, I’m considering on selling my a7iii in order to trade it for this a6600 since lenses are much more cheaper. Are you happy with the result on stills for a6600
Is the image quality the same as the a6400? Like the colors, also is the a6600 longer than the a6400? Or it that just how it looks because there’s nothing there where the flash is? I subscribed #TeamSony!
Image quality is near identical in my opinion, although the color science has been updated on the A6600 I heard... Can't really tell much of a difference when shooting raw quality though. The A6600 is slightly larger due to the larger battery and grip, but only a little bit bigger.
Thank you very much and great question. The fact is it sounds like garbage unless it's right up close. More than 6 inches away and it starts to sound tinny... The other option is a laviar style mic, which I would need to buy.
This camera is awesome !!! Only two things that may be cons for me is the same rolling shutter as in the 6500 and the lack of USB-C that they took out. Other then those things I love this camera. Maybe we can get together sometimes and shoot something, I think we are pretty close. Great video BTW

hi there. i think this review about A6600 is one the best i have ever watched. I am thinking of getting a new camera and if you do not mind i have some questions. Well first of all, it is said IBIS of A6600 is still not sufficient. Is it true? On the other hand my main doubt is 1080P. It is said that 1080p (especially at 120 fps) is still bad and soft. I was thinking of getting A6600 with Sony 18-105, Sigma 16 mm and Sigma 30 mm, but as you know Fujifilm announced X-T4 with 4K 60 fps and 1080 p 240 fps. And after watching the reviews about them, I am really confused. Fuji does not have lens options as Sony has, tho. I am a Phd student and unfortunately my economy is kinda limited. If you reply my questions, i really appreciate. Greeting from Turkey. Thanks.
I just started using the HDMI connection so I can have monitor hooked up when filming myself so it's easier to check focus and stuff. I did notice the face detection was not coming up when I had the HDMI Connection on, but did not have enough time to play with the settings on the camera to try and figure out why. Those features should work when a monitor is connected via HDMI I would think. I will play around with it more when I get another camera for review. I don't have anything on hand at the moment... Thanks again for the info!
Thank you so much for detail video very instructive for me I want to buy it body now is 1198.00 B&H I plan to use the Sigma 16mm -30mm Because the Sony lens are very expensive for me at the present time,
The auto focus performance seems the most compelling improvement in this top of the line APS-C which includes IBIS. Like you I'm surprised they downgraded the buffer size from the a6500. Think I'll wait till they release an APS-C with a new generation sensor giving greater dynamic range with higher resolution. Of course lots of improvements could be also be made on ergonomics. Sony could do so much with this line of APS-C camera's...I've learn't so much using them...just begging for those usability/performance upgrades.
Are you shooting 1080/120p? Rule of thumb is to double the shutter speed of whatever the frame rate is. So for 120p I use 1/250sec for example. Also, make sure white balance is set correctly...
@@Jason_Hermann I know that rule. I would like to shoot 1080p 25, 50 or what ever but the quality of the footage is very very bad. Even compared with my cheaper Sony pointshooter. Is there a fix? I use the 18-105 F4 thanks for the quick response.
I just bought my a6600 in 2024! Useful video

Amazing 👏 review and crash course, thanks a lot. Can't wait to get mine.
Nice video. Some of the samples of your son early in the video appear to have warp stabilization applied? Or was that a result of the IBIS?
That was caused by post processing stabilization. Sorry about that...

@@Jason_HermannWhat affordable flash do you recommend?
Off the top of my head I don't know, but if you initialize the camera it should be back to normal. MENU → (Setup) → [Setting Reset] → Initialize
Excellent tips .... Best video by far for set up! Thank you!

hope you can share some trick or tips for video recording using sony a6600
I just ordered one. I have a question. This camera record 8bit color depth videos internally. Is that also true for external video recording or will I be able to record in 10bits?
Yes, if using an external recorder, the Sony A6600 will be able to output 10-bit (4:2:2) uncompressed 4K video through its HDMI port.
@@Jason_Hermann hmmm sounds yammy,,,,, 4k 24fps should look even better like this
man I need that IBIS on my a6300 and that tracking is awesome. That highlight metering mode is actually pretty nice too!
especially when vlogging with 16mm F1.4 its cool that the camera knows to focus on your eye
Hi Lloyd, are you sure the screen is all the way up? It only flips when it's at the max selfie position.
Thanks for your great review. Did u use any color correction in your samples? Which settings did u use for video?
Will primarily be using for video do you think I should invest in a flash? Outside meetings at night but will have some lighting around also. What lenses? Where’s the link for the 600mm lens?

Yes, the full frame A7 III has noticeable better High ISO performance. both cameras are 24mp, but the full frame sensor on the a7III is much larger, so the individual pixels on the sensor are larger/ better...

Yeah, it does wobble a bit Steve when hand holding in particular.
i just got the a6600 how do you adjust the defocus on the Pics. ??
That requires knowing how to use the lens aperture in relation to focal length and distance to the subject. Check out this highly detailed tutorial video I made to learn how all that works: ua-cam.com/video/lt2Kp-2mCHA/v-deo.html

Thank you and smart move on your part, because the A6500 is a killer value at the moment!

Hi Jay, are you sure that Imaging Edge requires .jpg files to transfer? I transfer .arw files to my iPhone all the time with my RX10m4 and RX100m7. The app transfers them as .jpg but does the conversion internally during the transfer.
Yes, for full resolution files. Proxy files no, raw will work, but it downscales to 2MP jpeg files as opposed to 24mp original size files...

@@Jason_Hermann Thank you very much for your reply, it does help. To be honest its all about the investment rather than whats cheaper etc.
What 1 lens you recommend to compliment a6600 for traveling?

I haven't watched one of your videos in years. Wow you've come along way! Great lighting! But why don't you have that mic off frame?
Thank you very much and great question. The fact is it sounds like garbage unless it's right up close. More than 6 inches away and it starts to sound tinny... The other option is a laviar style mic, which I would need to buy.

hi there. i think this review about A6600 is one the best i have ever watched. Thanks.
I found a big problem with a6600. Face/Eye AF doesn't work if smartphone control is ON! This is a great disappointment. I need both of these features.
hope they can fix it soon with firmware, I just use the new Sony Bluetooth grip
mirrorlessNY they didn’t fix same problem on a7iii with hdmi connection.
I was not aware of that, so thanks for pointing it out. That really sucks!
mirrorlessNY I need external display in video mode . But only with face/eye AF

Love this cam. I also have a a7iii but ive been using the 6600 more lately for everyday use. Made a vlog about it in my page
I bought an A6600 a week ago.
Very cool!

Great video thanks. My 1080p footage from A6600 look terrible. (had the same problem with A6500) What’s the trick?
4K is very good though.
