Hello, I am from Finland the place where the axe is made. Living about about 5 km from the village Fiskars where the company was Norn a long time ago. Great video.
Been splitting with my Fiskars since buying my house a half decade ago. I use the Super Splitting Axe primarily, which is basically the X27 without the orange rubber over-molds. Thing is amazing for splitting wood! I also have the 28” chopping axe for felling small trees, which also works exceptionally. Lastly I have the 14” hatchet. Great for limbing trees for kindling, and just general camp duties. Really wanting their maul and the Norden axes. Great review, thanks!
I have an old school splitting maul head that I welded a metal handle to. It is the best wood splitting tool that I have ever had. No worries about breaking the handle.
I love my maul. Could use an axe, but I like the exercise. Some people swing a sledge into a tire at the gym for 5 or 10 minutes, I split wood for 15+ hours a week all year long. If you don't work out, just work outdoors.
This is the content we need man! I’ve owned them all (also have an x17 for my wife) and couldn’t agree more. I have two X27s now, definitely the lowest effort for the most chop.
Great info! I've been splitting with a 8lb maul for years. After getting and liking a Fiskars camp ax I decided to treat myself to an x27. Your endorsement makes me feel even better about that decision! Thanks mate!!! Keep the great content coming!!!!! 👍
@@Hello_there_obi I've been using my X27 for over a year now & am extremely impressed with my splitting improvement. I really no longer use my 8lb maul. I definitely use the X27 for large hardwood rounds. It has been a game changer for me.
@@bobv7753 interesting! I have a variety of rounds including oak.Just getting into the game and had a Stihl 3kg maul. I loved it and really enjoyed the weigh as I would pretty much be able to one-shot everything. Since I don't need to chop a massive amount of wood, I liked the weight because it's been a very good workout for me! But the isocore is 3.6kg which is 20% heavier still. Annoying! Does the X27 get stuck often? It seems to have a slightly less girthy flange to it if that makes sense haha I do have a splitting grenade and a sledgehammer however. So perhaps the X27 is the better choice! I also have no idea if the isocore comes with the 25 year warranty as I'm in the uk.
@@Hello_there_obi I agree the width being more narrow with the X27 you would expect less splitting outforce but that hasn't been the case for me. On large hardwood rounds I typically do quarter from the edge cuts. Very rarely do I split a large round from the center. I do get lucky sometimes. The design of the X27 head & its light weight provides greater striking force for me. I can swing longer. I also keep mine very sharp. Wet stoning often. On occasion on a stubborn large round I'll start a center split with the X27 then finish with a hammered splitting wedge.
Thank you so much. However there is a specific procedure to pick an axe between x25 and not 24 and x27. Fiskars shows how to pick the right one which has to do with the length of your arm 🙏I have x25, the xxl pro , the x5 which is amazing for camping, the x7 and the x10. Be well and thank you again 🙏
Just used my x27 a couple of weekends ago on the storm damage leftovers. Fine swinger it is! Chipped my blade a little on a rock but a file and a beer fixed it. LOL
When it comes to the x25 or the x27 it comes down to users arm length. To have an axe that properly fits you if you hold the axe from right under the head and the end of the handle reaches your armpit it’s the perfect length. I love my x25.
Not necessarily. It depends on what platform you use it for splitting. I'm 5. 8 and I split only logs lying down on the ground. So I need long handle to not to cut my legs off, for me x27 does the job. People using log on a log technique needs shorter handle like x25.
I'm a short dude... Hoping the x27 works fine for me... Pretty sure it will as my current maul is 35" in length. The longer the handle, the more power delivered. I can only see length being an issue if the handle is too short, as this is a safety concern. I suppose if you are really really short, the x25 may be appropriate.
@@mariobros8012 yeah I have an giant splitting log from an old black locust that I put all my logs on to split so that’s also why the short axe works well for me. I don’t like splitting on the ground.

I have a X25. For my purposes it's a fine do all splitter. Small enough to fit in my car for camping, and enough splitting power at home to split the little bit of wood I have for the outside fire pit. I also got the little x7 hatchet after using the X25 for awhile. Honestly the X7 is plenty for splitting wood while camping, paired with a silky big boy 2000 you have quite a decent light weight saw/axe combo. Hey mate, came across from Fire to Fork to check out your vids, and just wanted to say super impressed! I'm working my way through your whole catalogue of videos and you're the only content creator i've found on youtube making videos about getting wood! its a mad hobby of mine so im stoked to watch them. Also after watching your redfins videos, i've picked up a tackle tray of divers and spinners and im having a crack at that. Your positive vibe and outlook is super endearing and Tony is fucking hilarious, i also heavily rate how you guys are getting around in old leafsprung utes like me. Anyway just wanted to say you've got a fan for life with me, keep up the good work, especially wood and orchid hunting videos, give us a look at the Bush Rats Ranch as well! you mentioned you were doing some permaculture stuff and that sounds super interesting.
Mate. Absolutely love the vid. I'm 61, kind of just retiring, and moved to a place with some land and trees, and I spent a couple of hours today experimenting with cutting some seasoned hard wood (Damson) and some newly felled softwood (Willow), using my Son's SDS drill with various splitting chisels, my short handled axe (British made - I'm a Pom 😁) just to get a "feel". Do I buy a log splitter etc........ The "Wet" willow, was almost impossible with the SDS, and the Damson, not far behind. Being a silly old f@rt, I was trying to do the least effort, but honest to God, I found the axe the easiest........ I stopped smoking a few years ago mind 😜. The damson was EASY to split (only 6-7" diameter) and even the wet willow (18" to maybe 30") was easier to split with the axe - by a mile!!!!. Great learning day today mate - and then you popped up, and proved me right with the Fiskar X27....... Hard graft. It's the future mate 🙄🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The 8 and 10 pound mauls will tire ya out FAST. The 4 pound maul is used on small logs. > Any thing that needs a handle? I'am going to the POLY HANDLES! Reason? Can grip them better than wooden handle, less shock on the hands and arms. I had to replace the 6 pounder maul handle and the POLY HANDLE IS EXCELLENT > It will never come loose and take a beating. The poly glue that come with it is? EXCELLENT It takes a full 24 hours to harden
I just snapped the head off of my fiskars 8lb maul. I’ve had it for years and it has split many tri-axles of logs. They are heavy duty and I will be buying another one.
I’ve just cleaned up a few of the grandies block splitting axe heads which need rehandling. I think if I keep up the raw linseed to them and be careful of the handle just below the head should be right. They’re not too bad to do and reasonably low cost. Geez I love that stihl saw mate!!
appreciate it mate! need to try out a wood bullet once they are in production! My partner tried to order an axe off you for my birthday but shipping to Australia wasn't available 😢
good for price and of course they have lifetime/25 year warranty depend on country , normal ordinary axes get broke too often on wooden handle down there
I have some nice Grandfors, Hultifors, Sandvics etc but the axes that go in the ute for camping are the Fiskars. The steel is made from marshmello but that is not the point of them. They get abused and I don't mind my mates using them.
G'day from Perth also mate .I use a cyclone 2.5kg wide angle maul that destroys Jarrah usually in 1 swing. The bigger the axe/splitter the more effect it has but yea it hurts later on cheers mate
I wasnt too clear. I have the elbow. Not the x27. I had a cutting axe. I got the x27 instead of a maul today. I chose the x27 for endurance while working. If it doesnt do the job, i may try maul.
Great tools as long as you can get to a store or order a new one when the handle breaks. I can make a functional hard wood handle from Hickory, Yellow birch, sugar maple or oak with a hand saw and a pocket knife if necessary.
Mate - I'm exhausted just watching you there - Congrats on doing the commentary straight after, I'd have been doing it laying on the ambulance gurney. Great test

Fiskars are the truth! I have the exact axes in your video. They all have their place, but my go to is the X27. I use the maul for twisted grains and knotty knarly pieces.. great video!
I thought the Fiskars things were some sort of homeowner joke. Boy I was wrong. I got the X25 and it's great. split about 2-3 cords with it. So much easier on your body than the big heavy old school maul. I got the x27 when that came out and it is nice for some more knotty wood. had a few big over strikes and the handle is fine
Hay mate, just bought the X27 and Maul after watching this. Also have the ms 180. It seems the chain always goes dull fast and stops cutting. Do you have any videos on how to sharpen these chains? I have the stihl sharpener but cant figure out what I am doing wrong. Took into Stihl, they said bar and chain are fine, just needs a sharpen. Cheers mate.
@@BushRats They arrived today. Mate, you were spot on with your reviews. I wish I got them 20years ago:-). However, I much prefer the isocore as my timber is just so hard, even cutting around the edges like you do, its so dry and the ground cant grow grass its that bad!!! On a side note, what brand of chain do you use for cutting? I have tried Stihl, Prokut and have an Oregon I have not used yet. Carlton? Archer? ...etc. Also, went through a Stihl guide bar and the Archer one I have is not doing too well. I was hard on it though ;-). Just wondering what chains as my stuff is pretty dirty and Prokut etc (china chains) are cheap. Thanks mate. Look forward to the video.

Can someone explain the difference between the orange and black handle? I was told that the fiskars x27 with the orange molded handle was best since it would soften the blow to the hands more than the black handle
Awesome review on the range mate. I have the entire family of these bad boys and pretty much would give them the same ratings as yours. I live in Donnybrook and get our fair share of jarrah, the X27 is my go to for the big loads. Keep up the great vid's its so good to see our local areas being filmed.
I wonder if they even had those X names back when I bought the axes. Must have been more than two decades ago. I guess the bigger one might be X25 and the smaller X11. After I had tested the X25 for the first time, I told my dad it's so good the blocks will split from sheer fright when they see the axe. I have also used the tiniest one from the selection. It's pretty funny.
I've got about 3ton of blue gum rounds to split, torn between getting the maul or the x27. Is it a case of can't go wrong with either? (I'm a big boy and weight train regularly)
THANK YOU for splitting properly around the edges.. so many people waste energy trying to go down the middle every time

I have owned a small one at home about 12yrs mainly used for kinderling and used for other things as well. I brought the beast about 6 months ago for stubborn crap. Just brought the X27 to use. Good to see split around the round. I'm not a big fan of starting the saw in the air each to there own
Thanks for sharing!
I use the maul for the tough stuff, X27 for the dry, straight stuff and the X7 for kindling
good combo mate!
If you want the saw to last you a while let it idle a bit so the cylinder warms up before you throttle up !
Exactly that Always let the saws warm up 👍
Hey mate, came across from Fire to Fork to check out your vids, and just wanted to say super impressed! Anyway just wanted to say you've got a fan for life with me, keep up the good work, especially wood and orchid hunting videos, give us a look at the Bush Rats Ranch as well! you mentioned you were doing some permaculture stuff and that sounds super interesting.
cheers lemon appreciate the kind words! good to hear your getting out there having a flick 🎣 plenty more bush content coming soon 🍻🍻🍻
Man the quality of your logs are beautiful. They’re very obedient to the axes.
Great video, big help! Thank you sir!
Elite brother 🙌 can’t wait to get our chop on 🤟
few loads to be gotten 🍻
My Fiskar 25 is arriving today. $56 on Amazon. I'm looking forward to using it!
ya won't regret the purchase mate 🪓
I’ve just cleaned up a few of the grandies block splitting axe heads which need rehandling. I think if I keep up the raw linseed to them and be careful of the handle just below the head should be right. They’re not too bad to do and reasonably low cost. Geez I love that stihl saw mate!!
Sounds great mate! can't beat a Bitta linny oil 🍻
good job mate
appreciate it mate! need to try out a wood bullet once they are in production! My partner tried to order an axe off you for my birthday but shipping to Australia wasn't available 😢
good for price and of course they have lifetime/25 year warranty depend on country , normal ordinary axes get broke too often on wooden handle down there
Iam getting a x27 tomorrow I didn't know they had a lifetime warranty cheers mate
you won't regret it mate 🍻
Keep the wood vids up love em
thanks gang 🍻
I have some nice Grandfors, Hultifors, Sandvics etc but the axes that go in the ute for camping are the Fiskars. The steel is made from marshmello but that is not the point of them. They get abused and I don't mind my mates using them.
Great video! Very cool! THANK YOU!
Thanks for watching!
Beautiful informative review brother! Thank you 🙏. I’m ordering the x27 & the maul now. 🍻 👊 🇺🇸
G'day from Perth also mate .I use a cyclone 2.5kg wide angle maul that destroys Jarrah usually in 1 swing. The bigger the axe/splitter the more effect it has but yea it hurts later on cheers mate
cheers mate! yeah need to have some kids so I can make them spit and load when I get too old 😂
@@BushRats I've got 2 kids that gimme a hand but they're not strong enough to send the splitter just yet 👍
Just bought my x27 in a flash sale for £23 😎
Can’t wait to try it out!!
Finding quite a few posts of guys with x27s getting tennis elbow. Same here so considering going to a maul.
I think continually using any axe will do that mate unfortunately 😂
@@BushRats I mean.... im 43 and have only been around the woods since i was 5 or 6.
I can make a functional hard wood handle from Hickory, Yellow birch, sugar maple or oak with a hand saw and a pocket knife if necessary.
well done John 🍻
excellent vid, great comparison. Can't believe they can handle fire, found my next axe buy now, cheers mate
thanks for watching mate 🍻
X27, from the UK . And a new subscriber 👍
Great video mate! Will be following you. Just picked up the 2 heavier ones today.
Good stuff mate welcome aboard! 🍻
I am 5ft. tall and of the axes I saw you use I liked the x 27 the best but I am sure the 25 would do a good job as well.
Thanks. Ordering the x27 today :)
good purchase John 🍻
Mate - I'm exhausted just watching you there - Congrats on doing the commentary straight after, I'd have been doing it laying on the ambulance gurney. Great test
Please tell me what chain you use on your chainsaw. I'm sick of having to sharpen mine. It goes blunt after 4 or 5 small logs.
Stihl full chisel 3/8 mate!
@@BushRats legend. Thank you
Another good vid mate, I've got the maul pretty happy with it 🤙
Good to hear mate 🍻
Good video man! Appreciate it 👍
cheers Jarrod 🍻
Owwww thank the lord !! I found this video before I had to endure my second winter in Collie 😂….. First winter didn’t go well !! When they say “owww Collie gets cold” there not shittin ya !! I’m sure I burnt a tree 🌲 a week trying to keep me and my hounds warm and I swear to god if I bust one more nail carrying a huge chunk of firewood 🪵 I’m gunna loose my mind !! Jokes aside… I’m now leggin it to bunnings to buy a fiskar 27 coz those jarrah rings are hard to split 😅.. so cheers for the tips, love the videos
haha it only takes one winter to get inspired to get the fire going 😂
You should leave the man's work to your husband.
I like the look at x27 where can you get them my bro ? Awesome video too can't beat a good old wood chop
thanks mate! most hardware stores but definitely Bunnings!
@@BushRats copy that cheers mate
I was thinking of filling the last 8 inches of handle with RTV silicone rubber to dampen vibrations? any thoughts?
I love my x27. It's all I use for hand splitting. Around $60 usd
nice one mate 🍻
Fiskars are the truth! I have the exact axes in your video. They all have their place, but my go to is the X27. I use the maul for twisted grains and knotty knarly pieces.. great video!
I pretty sure the axe head is also made from spaceship metal 🤷♂️
X27 for me. Ripper all rounder. 👍
💯
I've got the x27, maul and mini maul.... all you could ever need plus some 👌🍻 hard to get a big maul now days thou 😥 great vid mate 👍 👌
thanks mate always wanted a mini maul 🪓
X27 is my absolute favourite splitter
Can’t go wrong with an x27 💯
X25 for me and I also run a little x17 hatchet for the small stuff. Keep up the rad content.
good setup mate cheers 🍻
I thought the Fiskars things were some sort of homeowner joke. Boy I was wrong. I got the X25 and it's great. split about 2-3 cords with it. So much easier on your body than the big heavy old school maul. I got the x27 when that came out and it is nice for some more knotty wood. had a few big over strikes and the handle is fine
Takže se mi vyplatí na štípání 1m dlouhých špalků v lese k mé x25 dokoupit ještě x27 a bude to snazší práce??? Díky za odpověď..
Cheers mate.
good axe combo mate! I will have a chainsaw maintenance video coming up in the next couple of videos 😊 keep an eye out!
Which kind of tree/ wood is it ? Great job , greetings from Spain
I always use that maul. Best $70us I’ve spent.
I have the super splitter x27 my favorite axe all around
Planning on getting the x27 just because if I need the length I got it! Love to have the x25 but I’m scared to get it and want more length being I’m 6,0 tall. What would you recommend?
im 1760mm tall and i use the x27. Get more swing and power. I used an old axe with a 700mm long handle and is way too short
I'm with you on that. The X25 is a beast, but it's too short, and I like my legs. I'm 5'10"
How about the x36?
Can someone explain the difference between the orange and black handle? I was told that the fiskars x27 with the orange molded handle was best since it would soften the blow to the hands more than the black handle
not too sure mate I think they may have just updated the colours over the years 🤷♀️
I have the x25 been trying to chop old dry "York gum" hard as nails...
Fiskars is Finland's oldest company.
Below 0*C I use a splitting axe with a wooden handle. I work without gloves. Plastic and metal handles are not good in cold weather. Gränfors is OK.
Thanks for sharing mate cheers 🍻
Awesome review on the range mate. I have the entire family of these bad boys and pretty much would give them the same ratings as yours. I live in Donnybrook and get our fair share of jarrah, the X27 is my go to for the big loads. Keep up the great vid's its so good to see our local areas being filmed.
perfect tool for the job mate! cheers!
Donnybrook VIC?
@@robertsaca3512 Nah in WA mate
@@robertsaca3512 Wild question but can I ask why you asked if I'm from VIC. I have missing mail that may have been sent there!
@@wcampna5902 there’s a Donnybrook in western suburb of Melbourne.
It's pretty funny.
haha classic mate cheers 🍻
I've got about 3ton of blue gum rounds to split, torn between getting the maul or the x27. Is it a case of can't go wrong with either? (I'm a big boy and weight train regularly)
Good job sir, nice axe
I’ve used several fiskers and other foreign brands. The German and Swedish brands work a lot better for me plus better quality.
You should try a Sotz monster maul
Had X27, kids broke handle. Thought they'd lost the thing but eventually found the head. No idea where the handle went.
haha should still be able to take it back for a replacement mate 🍻
@@BushRats I will try.
