Just a little story from me, I was hammering on my X27 with a sledge, using it for a wedge, I miss hit the head and broke the handle, 10000% my fault, I shot Fiskars an email, let them know exactly how I broke the axe and how much I loved splitting with it, they sent me a brand new one! Kick ass company, I own 4 Fiskars axes now lol
I’ve been splitting firewood for personal use for 45 years, of that 45 years, 40 of it was by hand with wedges, or every kind of splitting maul you could imagine. After watching your video I ordered a Fiskars X 27 off Amazon. I opened up the box and my first thought was, it was odd weighted as the handles was very light compared to the head. I took a piece of wood 10 inches across with a crotch and after three swings, I had four pieces of wood, easy Peezy. Best splitting mall I’ve ever used. Thank you for the video.
Had the Fiskars X27 for 5 years now and just got the Fiskars splitting mail/demolition maul they call it on some countries and they’re a great combo. Highly recommend to all whether professional or amateur
I used the first versions over 45 years ago! (in Finnish) Fiskars has one downside, the handle shakes, but it doesn't BREAK under ANY circumstances when it's in the hand. Your hand breaks first.
Bought the X27 for my first bash at splitting wood. It's very forgiving for a learner like me and I got through a lot of tough rounds (30+ inch knotty jobbies!) It's also made me completely fall in love with splitting wood. The noise, the exercise, the satisfaction. It's like soul food for me. I adore that axe!
They are both GREAT splitting axes! Have both and like both. Started with the x27 and agree you can get more speed with it. I use the x25 because I'm 5'- 9" tall and they say the x27 is better for people 6' and taller. My kids use the x27 because they're 6' tall. I've been splitting for 45 years and had every kind of maul; Fiskars is the best!!
I'm 5'7 and I was worried when I bought the x27. I thought it would be way to long... it's actually a nice length. Only thing I can think of is may e its because I normally split on the ground or maybe because I played hockey growing up. But I have had zero complaints on length
One thing I did notice, he had a lot less control after the split with the x25. Especially at 16:43. It seemed to come back toward his legs a lot in his demos especially that second chop. When he was splitting with the 27 the splitting axe went straight down into the wood, and he didn't have to control on the after swing to avoid hitting himself in the legs.
I was about to comment the same thing, I jumped a couple of times when Chris nearly lost a shin bone. I'm 5'8" and was thinking of getting an X25, but this has made my mind up to go for the X27. I suppose you should bend your knees on each strike to counteract the shorter length of the X25, but that's going to tire you quicker as well.
I use both an x25 and x27 I prefer the x25 I can swing more often and split faster I feel like I have more control with it, but I do agree the x27 has more power and is safer I use it on bigger uglier stuff, you can avoid a lot of the swinging into your leg by swinging it differently. Bring it straight down to the ground instead of a circular motion also spread your legs apart to the sides rathe than 1 in front and 1 in back.
I saw him nearly hit himself two times with the shorter axe and cringed. Perhaps it's that he's just used to the longer axe, but it sure got me to thinking that the longer axe is safer (which is kind of non-intuitive to me).
I bought the X27 about a year ago after watching you and Tony talk about the Fiskars line up. I love using that axe so much I haven't touch the old ones. Fantastic product!!
Love your channel. I have every size of axes and mauls that Fiskars makes. In my opinion the X27 is for taller people; 6’ or taller. I am 5’8” on a good day. My go to is the X25. If I do need some extra power, I will use the X27. Like you said they are all good. Keep up the great videos and thank you.
I'm 5'8" and the X25 is absolutely perfect. I have a hydraulic for my larger loads, but the 25 is the bomb with a small load, and I truly enjoy using it. I don't sell. I go through about 2 full cords every season, and try to stay about 2 years ahead with mostly red oak and ash. I hate to burn cherry or hard maple, because I feel that those two belong on fine furniture. Love your shows as both educational and entertaining. Thanks for all the great tips, and keep on choppin'.
I like the x27 and my hookaroon!! I used old mails, now the x27 is my go to tool. Thanks for the explanation of them!! Stay Hydrated and Have a Safe Day
I like Fiskars (and Husqvarna chainsaws !) too. I own the X25 for woodsplitting and the X7 for backpacking (I also take with me the little Fiskars saw SW73). Cherry on the cake, Fiskars axes have here in France a 25 year warranty. By the way, Fiskars axes are named after their weight in hundreds of grams (X7 for 0.7 kg, X11 for 1.1 kg, X27 for 2.7 kg...)
@@leonardhpls6 Stupid smileys say a lot about a person's immaturity... As for the naming of the products, that's what a salesman told me and, I just checked my local website, he's absolutely right. Here is what I read: Merlin 2,7 kg - X27 - XXL Merlin 2,5 kg - X25 - XL Hache à fendre 2,1 kg - X21 - L Hache à fendre 1,7 kg - X17 - M Hache universelle 1,5 kg - X15 Hachette à fendre 1,1 kg - X11 - S Hachette universelle 1 kg - X10 - S Hachette universelle 700 g - X7 - XS Hachette de camping 500 g - X5 - XXS Don't count on me to give you a childish smiley.
I have the smaller for kinderling had it for 14 years still going strong left outside in the weather in that time. Ended up buying the 27 and the splitter one they are the best axes I have used I'm enjoying your content 👍
Recently picked up the X27. In the end I was similar to you... for the extra $10-15 it just makes sense. I also have the X11 which is great for camping etc.
I used to split on the ground but lately cause of back injuries Ive gone to using a chopping block, bit slower but a lot less sharpening now days. Great video Chris. Cheers from Haumoana NZ
Ive used the 27 for 5 years and honestly, if you get a really nasty piece of wood full of burls that wont split, it happens, I use my saw cut the piece in half with the grain part way and use the fiskars to finish it. I cut 15 pulp wood cords or 45 face cords annually, we heat strictly with wood in Michigans UP. No kidding its a really good tool and didnt break the bank. Ive been thinking about buying a fancy axe, but ive thought about it and whats the point? So it looks cool? The fiskars looks cool enough, my logger buddies know its a serious tool and a couple of them bought the 27 also after swinging mine. Great video fella!
I bought fiskars x25 last year and now i surprised myself x17. I wanted to an axe what i could use two or one hand. work with fiskars axes a pleasure. great video! Have a good work!
Fantastic video. My son wants to get a splitting ax and I started doing some research for him and found your video. This is the best video and demo I have found by far. Thank you. I may buy myself one as well!
I noticed Nicole Coenen uses a Fiskars axe which led me to your channel. If she's not sponsored, she should be. Awesome video. I think this was the video that sealed the deal for me. This will be the first axe I've ever bought for myself. I've always just used hand me downs.
G’morning Chris. Great information, thanks for sharing ! I’ve been thinking about the X27 as my 6 lb. maul starts to hurt my shoulder, now I know ! GoodNightIrene
Would you still recommend the 27 for a 5 foot 1 woman? I have pretty good strength, but I'm short! It seems like the 25 would make the most sense, but I'm interested in your take. Do you think it can handle Arizona Ash that has been dead for years without expending a ton of energy/power? And can I hit the top with a sledge? Is it big/hard enough to handle the pounding if I wanted to use it like a wedge? Thank you.
Iv bn using the x25 for 10 years now it'll split whatever you want old oak, beach Ash knotted pine, it's a great tool and I am 5ft11, and preferred it to the longer axe!
Been using the X27 since fall 2018, and it has been the best splitting axe I've used. Also have the Fiskar's 8 lb Maul 10lb Sledge and 4lb Hammer with wedges. The shorter X25 I found too dangerous as the target pieces strike surface needed to be a bit higher and the full swing follow through was risky! The X27's follow through is lower and of lesser risk. All are a great workout! Keep up the great vids!!
@@InTheWoodyard Watching your #346 (Pickaroon: Long vs. Short) right now. Ordered the 12" Fiskars Hookaroon XA2 last night to hold small pieces vertically for hatchet splitting. Thanks for the tip!
Had my X27 for has to be 7+ years I think. I love the way the hollow handle puts all the weight in the head. I use it every year through winter splitting our wood down smaller for the fire. So that is like 12m3 a year with it and still going strong.
After this video, I need to add Fiskars X27 to my firewood tool set. I got the Fiskars Hookaroon 28” a few years back and have never looked back. I use my tools and the hookaroon has stood up and laughed at me, as if saying is that all you got? For reference I have moved 24” across bucked pieces of live standing red oak up to waist height with that hookaroon and never lost a round, I do not do that all the time, it was a test to see how it would hold onto the round, it passed with flying colors. That had me hooked on Fiskars. Great well built tools that work and hold up. Great video Chris
I love my X27, I think the with the longer handle it is less likely than the x25 to hit your leg on a missed strike and hit the ground. I also have the Fiskars pickaroon which is awesome for picking up pieces from the ground or dragging them from the back of my pickup. I use an Estwing axe to help load rounds onto my splitter with out bending over, it holds the pieces with more control than the pickeroon,
Ive used a fiskars hammer for about a year now. The pommel swell with that orange grip is what does it for me. Saves the day when that fatigue kicks in.
Love your videos, Greetings from The Emerald isle,🇨🇮🇨🇮 good tip is to remove the inner walls of abtruck, place in a level cement surface, fill tight with wood rings, get 2 levels in, and split away, keeps all the wood together, and no running after split wood, works great,👍👍
Bought my x 27 back in January never looking back. There have only been a handful that were too knotty to split, so out comes the saw. Great axe. I bought mine after seeing your video with Tony about the fiskar tools.
I love my X21! Thinking about buying a larger Fiskars because (for unknown reasons) our firewood supplier seems to be providing much larger rounds this year. Maybe this might be helpful for someone reading - For larger rounds, I go around the edge taking off pieces. I feel that is a lot easier than taking a large round down the middle.
I have Gransfors, Hults, Stanley, Craftsman, Wedges slegdes and mauls that have been in my family for several generations.. about a dozen years ago I purchased a Fiskars Super Splitter... a few years ago, the X27.. those two are the only two I swing anymore, 100% wood heat in our house. When I first got the Fiskars, I told my wood heat friends it changed splitting from a strength workout to an aerobic workout. About 99% of our wood is hardwoods, splitting hickory right now, two big walnut blowdowns in the woods are on deck..
Thank you! Great demonstration! I am a relative new comer. I bought both. Before watching your demonstration and review I was going to return the maul but after watching your video I have decided to keep it. My issue with it was the bounce back....but it depends how you wield it. Again... thanks!😅
I'm buying one today, I just started doing firewood a few days ago and have redone my dad's old axe but the damage argument is valid thanks for the help and information.
I'm completely new to all this, I have a granfors bruks forest axe and it's OK for 6" birch rounds. This however looks amazing, I think I'll buy one. Gonna look to see if there's any videos on how to swing an axe. Thanks for taking the time to make this video
I bought my first X27 9 years ago. It's the best splitting axe I've used, you just need to keep them sharp for them to work best. I bought another X27 3 years ago and leave it on my splitter for small branches and some hand splitting. I also have a Fiskars 7853 splitting axe that is 23.5 inches long. I use that one on canoe camping trips, but it's short for normal splitting. I'm going to buy another X27 so I can leave it by my outdoor wood burner. I agree that you don't need to baby these splitting axes and they work great.
I love my x27. I just got the fiskars 8lbs maul. You have to try one. They definitely figured out the geometry. Minimal effort on huge rounds. Swings as good as the x27.
Got the 6. Hits like the 8. Swings a lot easier. The X27 literally doesn’t do it for me. 2-3 swings of a light axe tires you quicker than one hard swing of maul.
Chris, I watch video you produce. In fact, my 8 year old grandson watches with me and recognizes you by name. I have cut and split firewood for over 40 years since I don't own a mechanical splitter. I bought the X27 based on your video done with Tony. I works so much better than a traditional "Go Devil" (which is what we call a maul down here in the South). I am perplexed that you have not oner mentioned Tony in this video and since you guys seem to have shared a lot, I am hoping that you are still friends.
No worries David, we are still friends bit I am in my very busiest season in my business and Tony is busy with his new channel too, we will do some stuff again!!
Good day Chris, my first axe I have ever bought from Canadian Tire 6 years ago was a Fiskars x27. Still have it currently used regularly. My personal opinion a game changer in the axe department. I sent my number to your email would be a awesome birthday gift as it falls on this month. Keep my fingers crossed what better present then from the best wood channel I have been watching for the last 4 years . 👌🏻🔥🇨🇦
I have 3 Fiskars products 2 axes and 1 maul. The x25 was the 1st o e I got used and just like others is too short for me. So I used it as a wedge with a handle.. All 3 live in the truck and are with me on job site.. nice review Chris 😁👍
Have both x25 hangs out next to wood pile all winter and with splitter rest of the year. And My x27 follows my chainsaws around great for splitting large rounds for transport. They both work awesome.
I also have them both and even have the short 13-14 inch one. I mainly use them on the big logs I can't lift (I'm 6'2'' and 250lbs). I remove small bits just like you did until I can lift them to then go on the wood splitter.
I bought the X27 about a year ago. Fantastic axe, no regrets. But when I was trying to decide between the X27 and the X25, I was wishing there was a 32" version of it. A 32" would have been my first choice, because that's what my 8lb maul is, and I'm used to that length. If they ever make a 32", (X26?), I'll be getting that.
Just bought one today and split a black locust tree that came down in my neighbor's yard. She said if I cut it up for her I could have the wood. I got the X27. Love it.
Fiskars Fan myself, for a long time. I stuffed a 1 foot chunk of bicycle inner tube into the hollow handle using a skinny stick. I think it's about 6 inches in from the open end. Try it, it can be removed. I like the feel in the hands....
I have the x27. I got it at Walmart probably 4-5 years ago they were on clearance in Sept which was kinda odd and it was $25. They had the mauls and other lengths too. Really like it. If they made one with a higher quality steel I would def buy another. I use mine a bit when splitting cherry especially stuff no bigger then say 14 inches. Can split it faster that way then my splitters. Cherry splits so nice. I split some of the smaller ash too with it but forget about the bigger pieces those go right on the splitter lol
I have a lot of Cherry and even though it's not the densest wood around (90% Red/White Oak, Shagbark Hickory, Elm and Black Cherry in my area) I prefer it over Hickory and especially Elm 🤮 It splits really nicely and it seems to season quite quickly too. White Oak is still my favorite though
I got the X27LL. I am a small guy, broke my back 28 years ago due excavator bucking hitting me so it's makes this a hard job. I find the larger swing circle helps.
i must agree , Think cutting and splitting firewood is great exercise and enjoyable. I always feel better after making fire wood and am gonna buy a Friskars soon after seeing it in action
I switched to the X27 last year and I'm not looking back. The three mauls with broken handles that prompted the purchase in the first place are still sitting in the garage un hung.
Good review I like all of Fiskars products hammers to axes made in Finland quality products. I was a bit hesitant at first but after trying their axes and hammers I was impressed at the end of the day it’s a tool that does the job.
recently bought an X27, used a 16 lb monster maul for years, getting too old for it. Something to be said for speed and a long handle. I prefer to split the heavy rounds in order to lift them into my truck. I will noodle them if they are too nasty to split. Love the channel. Keep on splitting.
Awesome review, discussion and demo on these axes 🪓!! I 💯 am a Fiskars fan (have been for years) and have picked up a few of their items like the picaroon, hatchet, X17 and a few types of their quality scissors! Tony’s reviews on Fiskars items are awesome as well! All awesome products! And you just can’t beat the lifetime warranty on all their products! Thanks for showcasing these axes today… I need to get an X27 for the fleet! Andrew from NB :)
I absolutely love my X27. Ive got a Couple mauls, that I dont use anymore. I do have a Gransfors Bruks maul that I do like and use, but the axe that's on the wheeler day in and day out, is the X27, and my Plumb boys axe.
Very nice video.. I have A smaller fiskars but I will definitely buy the x27.. We cut olive trees here... What rype of wood is this? Greetings from greece
Got a sharp little cheapass hatchet that I keep next to me while splitting with the Countyline 40 ton, for those little "hangers on". Nice presentation. They have those "Fiskers" at Tractor Supply and I have been thinking about getting one. If I were a game player I would guess (2). And now it's Up, up and away to the woodyard where we definitely don't play games but have a lot of fun! Have a grest day everyone, and KEEP PUSHING!!!
I’m with you. The X27 is the best axe I’ve ever used. I’m not sure how an unbreakable handle gets a thumbs down from some folks but I love it. I don’t think it’s one of those “this OR that” kind of things. “This AND that” Is where it’s at! I also prefer the longer handle. It’s a safety thing with this axe. If you strike the wood half on at the leading edge the Fiskars has a tendency to pop the wood as soon as it makes contact and continue on its merry way, virtually unabated. It’s light enough that you can guide it away from your shins but it’s much better to make sure your wood is set back on the block so there’s something to stop the axe cold. The extra length keeps your legs a safer distance from the axe head and that’s a good thing. If I need a devastating, swing that’s lightning quick I’ll just choke up on the 27. I haven’t done any math on the physics involved but try it for yourself some time. Devastating. That’s the only word to describe how it feels. A full power stroke with the Fiskars is almost lazy in comparison. If I’ve got a piece that I know is going to be trouble or where the 27 can’t get it done in two or three strikes it’s time for a different approach. I’ve got nothing to prove so I don’t see the point in whaling away on some crotchety, yoked out piece of birch when I can just grab what I like to call the “Persuader “. What is the Persuader, you might ask. That would be a 16lb sledge hammer. It makes driving a wedge almost comical. I have yet to find a situation where I need more than four blows with a 16lb sledge hammer. It never gets stuck and I never need a second wedge. I don’t like to use the word “never” and I’m not just throwing it around for effect or to impress anybody. I’m pragmatic and I pay attention to what works and what doesn’t. I don’t see the point in using a maul because it’s overkill. 95% of the time all I need is a 27, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a quart of cold, leftover coffee. Failing that, I don’t waste time walking around a tough piece of wood looking for fissures and flipping it around to try and figure out where I think I have the best shot at making some toothpicks. Why?? Why bother!! I grab the wedge and set it with the 27 then grab the Persuader and I will punish! Hahaha! Good times!!! I love that shit! Anyways, I like your videos, man. You tell it like it is. Fact is, you just gotta want it more than the other guy. Even more than that: forget the other guy, I don’t don’t even think about that dude. I swing the axe because there’s wood that needs choppin’.
I was trying to decide if I was going to buy a fiskars splitting ask or invest in something more expensive like a German axe buy after watching your videos tonight I’m going to grab a X27 because I leave my axe outside and the longer handle is safer & harder swing. Thanks for the video. I did already buy a Fiskars hatchet a couple months ago and like it.
Great review! I’ve been testing my father-in-laws X27, and it splits brilliantly, but for me it maybe feels a little long....? The swing feels a little unwieldy, and I find I’m really having to concentrate on the distance to the log. I’m mostly splitting logs up to nearly 2 ft in length for our wood burner, and it only struggled on elm (bloody awful stuff!) and really knotty ash and oak. Usually I’d use my 3.6kg/8lb maul to blast those though, with a 80cm/31.5” handle, but if I kept turning the log the X27 eventually got ‘em!! Only using a very small chopping block, about 8” high. It’s a shame that Fiskars don’t do an X26, with a handle somewhere in between the X25 and X27, with the same head for more options, but I reckon the X25 is probably a better length for me at 5’8”? Any thoughts? Fingers crossed my email guess is closest to the mark anyway so I can put the X25 through its paces 😂🤞🤙 Thanks for all the vids, really enjoy your enthusiasm for wood! 😁
I got the x27 at your recommendation and haven’t looked back at the 6lbs maul since. I do choke up on it at times for smaller easier splitting logs so I don’t just blow through the wood into the dirt so I can see the utility in the x25.
I think they are alright. They work. I have a X17 for camping tasks. Bought it out of necessity and expected it to be trash. however it is pretty decent. Edge geometry, bit geometry, both solid. the handle has some wear but definitely not damaged which was my concern. I would have preferred a traditional style hatchet/axe. If the handle breaks most of the time you can replace it. I would be totally ok with being able to fix my tools. I service the rest of my tools anyway.
I bought an x15 several years ago for my skidder ax felling trees the handle is perfect length but too light to get down and dirty driving wedges. It was a fine ax till a dead forked ash decided to loose one side of its hinge and kick back the but landed mid handle and snapped it! I bought an x27 to replace it and have split 4 dump trailers of hardwood
I’ve got the fisker pickaroon and I love it I’m goin get the x17 I think that’s what it is it’s the 17 inch ax for kindling but I’m also interested in getting a splitting ax I’ve got a hydraulic splitter but would like to have an ax for back up I’m 6’3 witch one would you recommend the x25 or the x27 ??
Excellent test! I have an older version of that X25. As you mention, one great feature in Fiskars is that it is almost impossible to brake the handle. This enables also to twist the half split log open (carefully). You can't do that with an ax with a wooden handle. It will brake. Have you tried splitting of logs inside a car tire? Don't need to pick logs around. Much much more productive. It is also safer for your legs. Tire stops ax's movement.
Glad to find this review. I’ve been splitting with the FiskARS Isocore 8lb maul. It’s a beast, but I do get tired. Now tomorrow I get to buy an x27 an do my comparison.
@@violinviolence I'll be honest, I prefer the maul. I have a buddy who loves the x27. Me, I just love the weight and impact of the Maul. Also, shortly after this, I bought an Eastonmade Axis commercial splitter, sooo.... don't have much use anymore. :)
Good review Chris, love to swing Alex but the rods and screws in my back aren’t too fond of such activity. Have a good day, out to stack. It’s coming- 38-degrees now.
I prefer the 25 but same reason, when fiskars came out w splitting axes I could only find that size and consequently I got used to it. A rubber bungee cord can save you a ton of time on the straight grained oak, ash and probably a few other species.
Thanks for the review. I've seen these and was turned off by the handle material wrapping around the axe head but clearly it's not an issue! I agree Fiskars makes great products!
AND ! 90% fewer shreds and shards than the giant processor. So fewer trips to mount Shardmore with the tractor bucket. Nice job on today's installment .
Amen, also own a x27 and love it, I have a splitting axe from Lowes / Homedepot that has flares on the side that also works very well, but the fiskers by far is the best bang for $$$ in quality and will outlast the handler
Hi Chris! I know you weren’t meaning any disrespect, but that was so funny at the start, about baby diapers and stuff on custom axes! 😂 That was great! And I mean no disrespect either. 😊 You are one splitting machine! And I must say, in great shape. I have a couple of years on ya, and I fear I wouldn’t be able to hang with you! 😯 I have Fiskars scissors, garden tools, and a pole pruner, and couple of small hatchets. I think I will pop into my local Big Box store tomorrow, and pick up an X27. The smaller one has appeal to me, but after watching you, and fact I’m over 6 foot tall, the longer one makes more sense. I sent in my guess. take care! 👍✌🪓😊
I’ve owned an X27 for years. It has a long reach (I’m 6’2”) and it hits with authority. Tremendous splitter. As you say, it is the only maul I use anymore.
Hi CHRIS very interesting l still split but a lot less but with Fiskar splitting maul the 8 pounder and the 27 great videos and very informative By the way very nice round house swing on that splitting with various other overhead swings.Good to see a young man such as yourself not letting atrophy set in.And you are absolutely right to keep moving that is the secret along of people don't want to do.We see people all over with no ganus .Why Remember that old expression move it or lose it Its absolutely true .Looking forward to the next one TTYL Cliff 👋
I think from the looks of it the X25 would be better for splitting wood when it's elevated or for shorter people. I'm tall like you and seen a video from Fiskars about picking the correct axe for you. It said that your arm length and your arm strength would determine the size and weight of your axe. So you're right about it being safer to have a longer axe for a taller man. I hauled concrete for years the guys would mark their tools so nobody ran off with them, so I'm used to seeing tape, paint or a name scratched into tools, it would help to find them as well.
I like Fiskars brand scissors, they also have a lifetime guarantee. I used to make rubber stamps and I used Fiskars spring load scissors to cut both rubber and polymer stamps from sheets of the rubber and polymer. I wore out several and lost the springs etc. I sent photos and made phone calls to the company, no problem, they sent replacement scissors at no cost to me. Fiskars are a great company and very easy to deal with when necessary..
Im in the UK and use a budget splitting axe ($30). I get a lot of logs that have knots in them and have to hammer in a splitter all the time. Either that or because it rains here alot the logs are drenched, so axe gets stuck. BUT you make the Fiskar 27 look like it'll do these problem logs no problem?!?!
Been splitting wood for over 50 years. Bought X25 last summer. Ordered X27 this week. Feel X25 is a little short. Wondering… do you think it makes a difference if you split top to bottom or bottom to top of the tree? I’ve felt for years that top to bottom is the right way.
Hey Chris ….Question. What is the name of that tool that you can roll a log over and it holds the log off the ground. I bought a tri axle load of logs and that tool would come in handy . Thanks again. Craig Pa
Part of the size also depends on how tall/big someone is too. I'm only 5'6"/5'7" on a good day, 135-140lbs. and the x27 is a bit too big for me. The x25 fits good
Hi Chris, What do you prefer for splitting big rounds, say 3 ft. diameter red oak? I have a 30" maul from Harbor Freight but it's pretty useless on the big rounds so I use a wedge and hammer but I saw you splitting big oak rounds with your X27 and it got me wondering.
I prefer my log splitter ! But for hand splitting the x27 is great. I start on the edges and work my way in. I do not go for halves and quarters right away unless it is a perfect round with no knots.
I'm 5'10" and picked up an X27 recently. I had trouble deciding between it and the shorter X25 and wish there was a handle length in the middle (like a 32" X26). Happy with the X27 though. Have had one or two strikes glance off the edge of smaller rounds and it was nice to have it a bit longer and have less chance of accidentally hitting myself.
I Absolutely love Fiskars... just wanted to mention, we also have a "Truper" splitting axe that works great too, it has wider flared taper "wings" and it measures 33 1/2" long FYI. Cheers!
Yup, great products from a great company!
I don't think so! Fiskars has one bad side, the shaking of the stem! But it doesn't BREAK Under ANY circumstances when it is in your hand.
That is great! I had the same thing happen to me too...best splitting axe/maul made in my opinion!
Had the Fiskars X27 for 5 years now and just got the Fiskars splitting mail/demolition maul they call it on some countries and they’re a great combo.
Highly recommend to all whether professional or amateur
Please review the halder simplex spilling axe? @@InTheWoodyard
Yup, splitting wood is great fun!
Same bro’. Same
No better WORKout than splitting and shoveling.
Yup, they both work great!
Yup, it works great!
Yes the x25 was much harder to control. The x27 is my choice.
Great to hear!
Thanks for watching Craig!
Thanks so much for watching Alfred!!
I like the x27 and my hookaroon!! I used old mails, now the x27 is my go to tool. Thanks for the explanation of them!! Stay Hydrated and Have a Safe Day
Thanks, you too!
Over a 5 Yrs... I have replace and added to my Fiskar axe and garden tools. I'm with you Chris, I absolutely luv splitting and cutting wood
Thanks for sharing!!!
I see, good to know, thanks!!
@@InTheWoodyard How tall are you roughly, seems relevant for reach, swing etc.
You don't have a clue. They have a lifetime warranty worldwide and the X number is nothing to do with the weight 😂

As for the naming of the products, that's what a salesman told me and, I just checked my local website, he's absolutely right. Here is what I read:
Merlin 2,7 kg - X27 - XXL
Merlin 2,5 kg - X25 - XL
Hache à fendre 2,1 kg - X21 - L
Hache à fendre 1,7 kg - X17 - M
Hache universelle 1,5 kg - X15
Hachette à fendre 1,1 kg - X11 - S
Hachette universelle 1 kg - X10 - S
Hachette universelle 700 g - X7 - XS
Hachette de camping 500 g - X5 - XXS

@@leonardhpls6 You're the one who's misinformed. He's right. It's their weight designation.
I have the smaller for kinderling had it for 14 years still going strong left outside in the weather in that time. Ended up buying the 27 and the splitter one they are the best axes I have used I'm enjoying your content 👍
Good to know! Thanks for the info and for watching!
Recently picked up the X27. In the end I was similar to you... for the extra $10-15 it just makes sense. I also have the X11 which is great for camping etc.
Yup, the x27 is better for me.
I used to split on the ground but lately cause of back injuries Ive gone to using a chopping block, bit slower but a lot less sharpening now days. Great video Chris. Cheers from Haumoana NZ
Yup, time and gravity eventually get us all!
Thanks so much. My son is becoming an arborist and wanted an axe for Christmas. This video made my decision.
That is awesome! Thanks for watching!
Yup, I have a few of them and like them just fine. They just work and when someone tries one out they want one.
I bought fiskars x25 last year and now i surprised myself x17. I wanted to an axe what i could use two or one hand. work with fiskars axes a pleasure. great video! Have a good work!
Yup, they make good stuff!
Fantastic video. My son wants to get a splitting ax and I started doing some research for him and found your video. This is the best video and demo I have found by far. Thank you. I may buy myself one as well!
Very cool, axe work is great exercise!
I noticed Nicole Coenen uses a Fiskars axe which led me to your channel. If she's not sponsored, she should be.
Awesome video. I think this was the video that sealed the deal for me. This will be the first axe I've ever bought for myself. I've always just used hand me downs.
Awesome, you will love it...get cuttin'!
G’morning Chris. Great information, thanks for sharing ! I’ve been thinking about the X27 as my 6 lb. maul starts to hurt my shoulder, now I know !
GoodNightIrene
Good luck! You will like one for sure!
Thank you for this review. I just order an X25 and, after seeing the performance on your video, I'm excited to get to work with it.
They make good stuff!
X25 GANNNNGGG!
They are definitely nice. I like the x27. The smaller one be good for banging wedges. Thanks for the chance to win. Have great day.
Thanks, you too!
Yup, they both are great axes!
Brother?
I just picked up the smaller X-25, it's basically for around the house use, and occasionally chopping up a fell limb. Thanks
Yup, nice!
I totally agree!
@@InTheWoodyard Watching your #346 (Pickaroon: Long vs. Short) right now. Ordered the 12" Fiskars Hookaroon XA2 last night to hold small pieces vertically for hatchet splitting. Thanks for the tip!
@@musiclaw1486now that's just stupid. Let me know when you hit the damn thing with your axe how much of a twat you feel
Had my X27 for has to be 7+ years I think. I love the way the hollow handle puts all the weight in the head. I use it every year through winter splitting our wood down smaller for the fire. So that is like 12m3 a year with it and still going strong.
Nice, keep cuttin'!
Man you have developed a Super high speed swing! I've seen much younger guys in Videos not swinging near your speed! Thanks for the Comparison Video!
Thanks for watching!
Yup, they just work!
I love my X27, I think the with the longer handle it is less likely than the x25 to hit your leg on a missed strike and hit the ground. I also have the Fiskars pickaroon which is awesome for picking up pieces from the ground or dragging them from the back of my pickup. I use an Estwing axe to help load rounds onto my splitter with out bending over, it holds the pieces with more control than the pickeroon,
Thanks for sharing, nice tools!
Ive used a fiskars hammer for about a year now. The pommel swell with that orange grip is what does it for me. Saves the day when that fatigue kicks in.
Yup, it does help!
Love your videos, Greetings from The Emerald isle,🇨🇮🇨🇮 good tip is to remove the inner walls of abtruck, place in a level cement surface, fill tight with wood rings, get 2 levels in, and split away, keeps all the wood together, and no running after split wood, works great,👍👍
I meant truck tyre,
Thanks!
yup, got it!
Bought my x 27 back in January never looking back. There have only been a handful that were too knotty to split, so out comes the saw. Great axe. I bought mine after seeing your video with Tony about the fiskar tools.
That is great!
The hatchet is awesome too !!
COOL!
Great video Chris. I have the X27. Hand/Plastic
Surgeon advised no hand splitting for me. Thumb is not quite ready for swinging an axe.
Right on! Just use the green machine!
Yup, always take the edges off!!
Very interesting! I agree, the x27 is my most favorite one to use too!
Thank you! Great demonstration! I am a relative new comer. I bought both. Before watching your demonstration and review I was going to return the maul but after watching your video I have decided to keep it. My issue with it was the bounce back....but it depends how you wield it. Again... thanks!😅
Thanks for watching!
I'm buying one today, I just started doing firewood a few days ago and have redone my dad's old axe but the damage argument is valid thanks for the help and information.
Good luck! Thanks for watching!
I'm completely new to all this, I have a granfors bruks forest axe and it's OK for 6" birch rounds. This however looks amazing, I think I'll buy one. Gonna look to see if there's any videos on how to swing an axe. Thanks for taking the time to make this video
Go for it. Just star swinging and you will figure it out!
Yup, my brother has 3 because when his boys come to help they can get more done and then do not fight over the X27s!
I love my x27. I just got the fiskars 8lbs maul. You have to try one. They definitely figured out the geometry. Minimal effort on huge rounds. Swings as good as the x27.
Thanks for the tip!
Got the 6. Hits like the 8. Swings a lot easier. The X27 literally doesn’t do it for me. 2-3 swings of a light axe tires you quicker than one hard swing of maul.
Chris,
I watch video you produce.
Best axes I've seen you use. Beautiful heads.
Thanks!
Thank you so much. I’m planning on getting the x27

I have 3 Fiskars products 2 axes and 1 maul. The x25 was the 1st o e I got used and just like others is too short for me. So I used it as a wedge with a handle..
All 3 live in the truck and are with me on job site.. nice review Chris 😁👍

Fantastic review! I have a bit of Fiskars addiction too.. 23" & 36" splitters, 17" & 28" choppers. Great combo 👌
Thanks! 👍
Have both x25 hangs out next to wood pile all winter and with splitter rest of the year. And My x27 follows my chainsaws around great for splitting large rounds for transport. They both work awesome.
Yup sounds great!
Hi Chris! Have you ever noticed a difference using round maul handles apposed to oval axe type handles. Axe type seem to bother my hands and fingers.
Yes, I like the oval better the grip is firmer and if you strike crooked it will not roll as easy in your hands!
I also have them both and even have the short 13-14 inch one. I mainly use them on the big logs I can't lift (I'm 6'2'' and 250lbs). I remove small bits just like you did until I can lift them to then go on the wood splitter.
Yup, good idea!
Thanks for taking the time to create this video. Very helpful. 👍❤️
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching!
Hey Chris, I also have the X27 and I love it. I do all my splitting by hand, and I haven't had a better splitting axe before.
That is great Johannes!
Dont you get blisters from using x27? I do near the thumb area
Cut the handle down and put a fawns foot/swell on the end with tape maybe.
@@InTheWoodyard Or use a heat gun and a piece of metal conduit to bell it out and let it cool.
Just bought one today and split a black locust tree that came down in my neighbor's yard. She said if I cut it up for her I could have the wood. I got the X27. Love it.
Yup, tools that just work!
Fiskars Fan myself, for a long time. I stuffed a 1 foot chunk of bicycle inner tube into the hollow handle using a skinny stick. I think it's about 6 inches in from the open end. Try it, it can be removed. I like the feel in the hands....
Cool anti vibe idea!
Yup, I love cherry too!
This is something people are always asking me to compare, great video
thanks for watching!
Have the 8 lb maul and the X27, I've spoiled myself. Love these tools
Yup, nice stuff!
I got the X27LL. I am a small guy, broke my back 28 years ago due excavator bucking hitting me so it's makes this a hard job. I find the larger swing circle helps.
Yup, I like the x27 more also!
i must agree , Think cutting and splitting firewood is great exercise and enjoyable. I always feel better after making fire wood and am gonna buy a Friskars soon after seeing it in action
Sounds like a good plan!
I switched to the X27 last year and I'm not looking back. The three mauls with broken handles that prompted the purchase in the first place are still sitting in the garage un hung.
Yup, once you try it you will not want to go back!
Good review I like all of Fiskars products hammers to axes made in Finland quality products.
I was a bit hesitant at first but after trying their axes and hammers I was impressed at the end of the day it’s a tool that does the job.
Thanks, yup, they make good stuff!
recently bought an X27, used a 16 lb monster maul for years, getting too old for it. Something to be said for speed and a long handle. I prefer to split the heavy rounds in order to lift them into my truck. I will noodle them if they are too nasty to split. Love the channel. Keep on splitting.

They are nice, give one a try!
Yup, I concur Joe!!! Keep cuttin' and choppin'!
Good choice!!
Fingers crossed my email guess is closest to the mark anyway so I can put the X25 through its paces 😂🤞🤙
Thanks for all the vids, really enjoy your enthusiasm for wood! 😁
Yes, for your height an X25 might be a better axe! Keep swinging!
I got the x27 at your recommendation and haven’t looked back at the 6lbs maul since. I do choke up on it at times for smaller easier splitting logs so I don’t just blow through the wood into the dirt so I can see the utility in the x25.
Yup, it is a great axe!
been using x21 for years and i bought x27 last week because i had to split some rounds over 50cm in diameter, love them both
nice!
Fiskars has a lifetime warranty.
Nice buy!
I’ve got the fisker pickaroon and I love it I’m goin get the x17 I think that’s what it is it’s the 17 inch ax for kindling but I’m also interested in getting a splitting ax I’ve got a hydraulic splitter but would like to have an ax for back up I’m 6’3 witch one would you recommend the x25 or the x27 ??
x27 all day every day for you my giant friend!
No, I have not........yet!
Glad to find this review. I’ve been splitting with the FiskARS Isocore 8lb maul. It’s a beast, but I do get tired. Now tomorrow I get to buy an x27 an do my comparison.
You will be mad... that you did not get this one sooner. Keep splittin'!
X25 BABBBYYYYYY
What's your findings?
@@violinviolence I'll be honest, I prefer the maul. I have a buddy who loves the x27. Me, I just love the weight and impact of the Maul. Also, shortly after this, I bought an Eastonmade Axis commercial splitter, sooo.... don't have much use anymore. :)
Good review Chris, love to swing Alex but the rods and screws in my back aren’t too fond of such activity. Have a good day, out to stack. It’s coming- 38-degrees now.
38!!! Nice!!!!
I prefer the 25 but same reason, when fiskars came out w splitting axes I could only find that size and consequently I got used to it. A rubber bungee cord can save you a ton of time on the straight grained oak, ash and probably a few other species.
Yup, a bungee or a tire!
Thanks for the review. I've seen these and was turned off by the handle material wrapping around the axe head but clearly it's not an issue! I agree Fiskars makes great products!
Give it a try!
If it comes apart (it won’t) just warranty it and get a new one.
AND !
90% fewer shreds and shards than the giant processor.
So fewer trips to mount Shardmore with the tractor bucket.
Nice job on today's installment .
Yup, thanks!!
Great video. Have an X25 myself as I don't do a lot of manual splitting. Fan of the Fiskars tools here too. Have a good one Chris!
Thanks Tony!
Nearly got your foot there. I just got the X27 works great.
Yup, good thing I am as quick as a cat!
Amen, also own a x27 and love it, I have a splitting axe from Lowes / Homedepot that has flares on the side that also works very well, but the fiskers by far is the best bang for $$$ in quality and will outlast the handler
Good to hear!
Hi Chris! I know you weren’t meaning any disrespect, but that was so funny at the start, about baby diapers and stuff on custom axes! 😂 That was great! And I mean no disrespect either. 😊
You are one splitting machine! And I must say, in great shape. I have a couple of years on ya, and I fear I wouldn’t be able to hang with you! 😯
I have Fiskars scissors, garden tools, and a pole pruner, and couple of small hatchets. I think I will pop into my local Big Box store tomorrow, and pick up an X27. The smaller one has appeal to me, but after watching you, and fact I’m over 6 foot tall, the longer one makes more sense. I sent in my guess.
take care! 👍✌🪓😊
Thanks for watching George! Yup, the x27 is the one I would get too!
I’ve owned an X27 for years. It has a long reach (I’m 6’2”) and it hits with authority. Tremendous splitter. As you say, it is the only maul I use anymore.
Yup, it just works!
Thanks Cliff!
Yup, making your tool is a smart thing!
Good to hear!
It is a nice tool!
Been splitting wood for over 50 years. Bought X25 last summer. Ordered X27 this week. Feel X25 is a little short.
Wondering… do you think it makes a difference if you split top to bottom or bottom to top of the tree? I’ve felt for years that top to bottom is the right way.
Yup, I like the x27 much better myself. Either works but most important are avoid the knots and a fresh cut, dry wood is much harder to split.
Crazy timing, I just bought an x27 yesterday! Hopefully I picked the right one. The depot only had the x27.
That would be my choice too!
Hey Chris ….Question. What is the name of that tool that you can roll a log over and it holds the log off the ground. I bought a tri axle load of logs and that tool would come in handy . Thanks again. Craig Pa
Mine is a WOODCHUCK $150ISH, I LOVE IT!
Logging cant with Jack is another one.
These axes are well thought out. Good for splitting wood on the straight grain.
Yup, they just work good!
Part of the size also depends on how tall/big someone is too. I'm only 5'6"/5'7" on a good day, 135-140lbs. and the x27 is a bit too big for me. The x25 fits good
Yup, that is true!
Hi Chris,
What do you prefer for splitting big rounds, say 3 ft. diameter red oak?
Yes...EXACTLY!!
I Absolutely love Fiskars... just wanted to mention, we also have a "Truper" splitting axe that works great too, it has wider flared taper "wings" and it measures 33 1/2" long FYI. Cheers!
Hi! How tall are you?
I am looking for a height reference to decide between x25 and x27
Nice video, thanks!!
5'10" I much prefer the x27.
@@InTheWoodyard Hi, thanks for your answer. 🙌🙌
