Hi Nikki, I’m the great grand daughter of Ella Cain, and just wanted to say, you did a fantastic job with this Bodie vlog! You captured the stories and the history very well! Thank you - love your channel. 😊
Was it Ella that wrote a book with stories of Bodie? Almost 30 years ago, I worked with an old man named Leroy, that worked with the Cain family in the 1950's. He let me borrow a book, written by the last resident of Bodie. It was a fascinating book. It couldn't be sold today without editing. The words she used to describe the minorities in town are considered political incorrect today. Unfortunately, I forgot the name of the book.
Yes, Ella did write a book called The Story of Bodie and it is still available at some of the local shops. She was a colorful storyteller and it was written with the language of that time period in that locale. Some of it is certainly not appropriate for todays climate, but like any period piece, it reflects stories as they would’ve been told in that era.
Super cool to see you post here and see this video! I grew up in Mammoth, near Bodie and went to Bodie many times from a very young age. I also remember the lake that was white! It looks the same to me that it did back in the 70s when I was 5 years old, so they're doing a good job of preventing its decline! Do you know did your grandmother teach in that schoolhouse that is still there?
It's great to hear you actually give some history of a place you're at instead of us just enjoying it curiously through your enjoyment. More history and geology lessons please!
I have been to Bodie State Park, and I have to say, I learned more in this 19-minute video than I did spending the entire day there. Very well done Nikki.
One of my favorite episodes! I'm a total history junkie. I totally loved Huell Howser's California Gold series. If a network wants to reboot the series you should be the host. You are a 100% natural.
I really enjoyed that tour, Camper seemed so interested in every building, not afraid of ghosts but you are so brave to stay there overnight. Love the history of old places.
I have heard a lot of stories about people taking stuff from Bodie..even simple rocks..and then having terrible experiences. Apparently the park receives letters and the returned objects in the masses. I would love to hear more about your paranormal experiences..it’s fascinating. I am certain your banana costume made the ghosts think twice. Haha! Camper chasing you..like a huge squeaky toy. He’s so lovely.
@@NikkiDelventhal it is wild. Not long ago I believe people could access the buildings freely..which is why objects were taken. It appears that they have made strides to secure the property.
@@NikkiDelventhal I capture a picture of a ladies ghost there. It was through a window that was glazed over. I didn’t realize till years later when I was going through old photos.
Hahaha it’s funny u mentioned the rock cause that what my aunt did and she keep having car problems that send shivers through my body lol that crazy to have someone hear the same. So people done take anything plus it’s illegal to take anything from a national park
T. G. I. F. N. D...eed! Nikki in her element. Loving it! You shine when you do what you do. Camper, too. Love how he steps back and allows you to be the host you are. Thanks, guys! See you next week, I hope. Stay aware.
You continue to amaze me with your quality content. I am absolutely loving this travel experience with you as my tour guide. Maybe you could consider a spooky mini series for the season. I feel like you are in your element right now.
Hello Nikki and Camper, As always you are delightful to take us along on your journeys. Love the ghost towns, lakes, waterfalls, etc we vicariously experience. If you are ever passing through northern Utah and stop by Midway you can visit the thermal craters and take a dip. Drop me a line and you and camper are welcome to stay with my wife and me. Be safe and continue having fun. hugs
Hubby and I look forward to your new video on Friday. You channel is the only one he wants to watch every week. We love your adventures and Camper. We have a hound dog named Buddy.
I loved this episode. Take us to more places like this. Love your history story. Great job! I know some may not know what the PS means at the end of a letter (after thought or postscript) but…….PS….Camper loved it too.
Another awesome video Nikki ! You make a great tour guide ! ( And Camper too of course !) Would be spooky to be out there and listening to everything at night ! Swinging doors in the wind, creaking wood, wolves or coyotes howling, etc. Boo !! Thanks for posting !
Great Video Nikki. ❤ Hearing the history as well as the tour. More like this please. Your presentation skills are top notch! Camper jumping on the Banana ghost cracked me up.
We loved watching this video, the history commentary was great. Our favourite part was the night camera vision of Camper jumping up at the giant banana - hilarious!
You were obviously a really good tour guide Nikki as you delivered that history so well and made it really enjoyable and interesting. Really interesting hearing all about the town and what happened there. Really pleased you survived it lol :) x
I ❤Bodie! 👻 Thanks for the history and yes, it's super extreme weather there. Hot in the summer and cold in the winter. I remember learning about how much snow it got in the winter and I believe -25 in the winter.
Nikki, the found overall volume was a little low this time, but it was a very interesting, educational, and entertaining video. You are clearly a very good tour guide. It would be terrific to see more videos along this vein. Well done........
I ❤️ Bodie! The crackled old globe in the school house window brings reflection. Camper was probably attacked by angry flies and became traumatized. Poor baby ☹️ Dogs can sense paranormal. All's well if he was calm 👍🏻California gas prices 😱
Love this, adventure, history... and Camper. The "ghost towns" I've seen are not really considered to be haunted, just haunting. AKA empty and "dead" with echos of times past. So I don't know that I would "worry" about bad luck there... but I also don't have Nikki's history with ghost towns.
Suggestions.. tour ancestral pueblan sites like Chaco Culture National Historical Park & Mesa Verde National Park!! This video was very informative! 10/10.
Sounds like fun, both touring an old abandoned ghost town, to camping nearby, looking for ghosts. I use to camp in a campground back before 2015, before logging closed it, in a campground that was said to have been the site of several bigfoot sightings. Didn't bother me a bit. People would come down where I was camping, and they'd stay a while UP UNTIL just before dark, and they'd leave because they were scared. I don't know how many folks told me I was nuts. But, the only sightings I had were deer, turkey, and the weekend teenager population coming out to "get some fun" if you know what I mean. I loved it, though, because I was mostly alone, miles and miles from civilization, and it was so quiet and peaceful. Other than that sound of the ghost train coming thru the gaps in the mountains where the old 1800s era train ran, long, long years before....wind of course. Take care.
Hi Nikki...You know there are 2 kinds of tour guides. One who tells you what you're seeing. No brainer. The other is knowledgeable, observant, up on their research who tells you things you don't see or know. The surroundings, history, the feel of the place. And shares with you the "personal" stories of those times and the people involved. Also having someone who's interesting to listen to helps You Nikki are def that kind of guide/teacher. Thank you. Excellent video! Although you really did it, Nikki. You started a fire(not literally) under a number of people to seek, set out, visit and "delve in" to Bodie!. I guess that will happen when you're a terrific storyteller/"travel agent"?. And where else should you and Camper adventure or go?. What are you interested in, Nikki? Or fascinated about? What draws you in?! The sky's the limit... But Be Safe. Take Care Nikki... Steve... Btw: I've heard So.Calif. is a "strange" place to go and explore?!? You never know what you will find?!..
Hi, your near Brent he’s a UA-camr channels called GHOST TOWN LIVING if you don’t know about him you should stop by? Love the idea, but Bodie and Cerro Gordo are like 200 miles apart. And there's not exactly a paved road for a van just to roll up to Cerro Gordo, especially after hurricane hilary. It's completely destroyed so many roads in that area including Death Valley National Park.
What spooky stories do you have? What have you experienced? What do you feed Camper? How many times a day do you feed him? Thanks, Connie Smith in Salt lake City Utah 💜
The spooky banana and the skinwalker were truly terrifying! I love visiting old places and think about how they lived in those times. Bodie must have been one wild passionate town. Your commentary helped paint that picture for us.
Nikki, Aloha!! Great video!! Tour Guide at its Finest!! Been following you for about a year now and love the tours, exploring, adventures, Ohana lifestyle, Camper and can't imagine how you do it All!! Fascinating.....keep it up, do what you do and ride da wave of LIFE!!
Great vid Nikki. I've always loved the channel but your production quality these days is on point particularly as you are alone. Lovely light hearted ghost town antics. Keep up the good work 👍
I have been watching you for years and I don't recall ever seeing Camper laying down in the dirt chilling/sleeping. I read one of the comments saying you should go to Nevada and checked out some ghost towns there. I agree. This video was educational and you can tell you are in your element narrating the history of the ghost town
Nikki, I've watched so many of your videos. And to be honest, they have been part of my weekly schedule. They are peaceful, fun and inviting. I think this video is one of your best videos ever. I think you would be amazing on a streaming service, like Discovery+, Disney+, Netflix. Your overall experience, and ability to articulate the small details make a unique experience each video. Keep doing you! Thanks for the videos! -Eric
Great content and just want to say you are the best, the respect you show such a place full of history is wonderful, but then you've always shown such respect everywhere you go. I live in San Diego and use to go to Calico Ghost town often, but it's nothing like Bodie. When I lived in South Lake Tahoe I'd visit Bodie at least once a year as well as other derelict structures just out in the wilderness. Again, wonderful video, hope you're getting better. Stay safe, hi and ear scratches to Camper for me, if you don't mind.
We went to Bodie a few years back. We were on a road trip taking in the 395. Epic road. We also went through Death Valley and stayed at the Amargosa Opera House at Desth Valley Junction. Well worth a visit.
Thank you for the tour. Being a retired history and geography teacher, I believe this was one of your top videos. Stories about ghost towns and the old west are so interesting. You should check out a couple of spooky towns in old Nevada. Must have been spooky sleeping there. Glad Camper was there- he is an amazing dog.
Awe…I was hoping for Camper to jump out wearing a fluorescent skeleton costume! But the banana was cute. Looks like you had a lot of fun there. I love getting “tours” of interesting places.
I really enjoyed the change of pace with the history lesson. I've wondered how Missouri, where I live, developed in its infancy years. You do travel up to Washington on occasion. I wonder if you know of any land marks along the Columbia River for the Lewis and Clark expedition. I want to say you have mention it once in a previous video but don't remember for certain.
This was really well done. I like how you share the history you're a great guide. I'd love to see more like this video. Thank you for sharing be safe have fun!😺
Great video, Nikki! Our Boy Scout Troop just returned from a trip to Bodie last weekend! We also went to see Navy Beach on Mono Lake. Thanks for the tour.
When you’re back in Death Valley, the Keane Wonder Mine is worth a visit if you haven’t seen it. Straight up climb, or so it seemed. But old equipment remained from the top to the bottom and the shaft was open at least years ago. For safety it may be sealed now.
Nikki you truly are a jack of all trades. Many people would say how can she do this. Well intelligence, will, and high spirit and smart impulsive acts help man. 🎉 Nikki always faces life head first
Well if you want route suggestions - you could do the full length of US395, San Bernardino up to Kamloops BC. Save that for spring, you could like follow the weather up, arriving in BC in June, seeing wildflowers all the way. Then the full West to East run on the trans-Canada highway, start in Victoria BC, go all the way to PEI. With a few episodes poking around the big parks by Banff and Lake Louise, maybe a run up to Edmonton. Once you hit the Atlantic, head down to Key West, lots of history along the way, then back across the SW, boxing the continent! Collapse in San Diego for R&R.
I absolutely love this woman! every video Nikki puts out always makes me smile. Whether you've had a good day or a bad one, its always a good day when one of Nikkis vids drop!
You make a great tour guide. I was waiting for you to explain about the mill. No one has ever talk ed much about it or have showen footage of the mill. Yet great job thankyou.
Nikki : One of the best investments that I ever made for my motor home was an electric flyswatter. It looks like a tennis racket, but is strung with a grid of wires and has 2 AA batteries in the handle. See a fly or mosquito ... just take a swing at it. I got mine at Walmart for about $5 ... its probably $10 now. Its a lifesaver for camping and traveling.
My Mother and I visited Bodie's ghost town. in the 1970s and we planned after touring the buildings to have a picnic. Unfortunately they didn't have any public restrooms (just an old doorless outhouse) and no private place (I was young!), so we turned around and drove the 10 mile dirt road back. So I'm glad that I get to see it via your Overnight at an Abandoned Ghost Town. Interesting to see the various buildings and to learn about the history of Bodie. Your scary Banana 👻🍌😮apparition gave me a bit of a fright but I was relieved to see it was just you and Camper. Whew!
I agree, you need to visit Brent at Cerro Gordo. He bought the Ghost town and is rebuilding it. You would love it. Be safe in your travels. Sending hugs 🤗 🤗
Another cool ghost town is in Wyoming called South Pass where the Oregon trail crosses the continental divide. Atlantic City is right next door and there are used to be a bar there where you can go dancing on Saturday night. Rumor has it that Butch Cassidy hung out there. Loved your tour of Bodie
Fun place! You might consider picking up a game camera. They aren't super expensive. They react to motion from a variety of sensors, and are designed to stay on for extended periods of time. They can take both video and stills,
I love how Camper always has to sleep completely under the covers. We have two dogs and they both like to either sleep between my wife and I or one sleeps up between our two pillows at the head of the bed and the other sleeps at the very end of the bed.
Bodie is awesome. I finally made it there last year and was thoroughly impressed with it. I really enjoyed my day there and the big bonus is that it's dog friendly! I brought my dog as well and we had a blast. Great video by the way. You really are a good tour guide I must say...very informative
Thank you for doing this video! We have been wanting to visit Bodie for a long time. After watching this I feel like I know so much more about the town which makes me want to visit even more.

🎉 Nikki always faces life head first
🥰🥰🥰 thank you!
Awesome, wentthere with my firstborn when he was a year and a half haven't been back since time to go back. Time to head back👍🏼
Nikki : One of the best investments that I ever made for my motor home was an electric flyswatter.
Bodie is such an amazing historical town , glad you shared and it's next on my list of places to visit with family
You are in your element! Love the tour, one of my favorite videos!!
Your video was outstanding. I loved listening to you tell the stories of Bodie. You really do have a talent for this subscribed. ❤
☆ Nikki ☆ great video ! Very informative 😊 your tour guide skills on display ! ! ❤
Thanks Nikki for sharing your adventures and the history of the places you visit
