  • Andrew Copson counters Benjamin Perl on Newsnight. Benjamin Perl is supporting the claim that a child should be rejected from a Jewish faith school because his mother is not deemed to be 'truly' Jewish. The mother is a convert to Judaism, married to a Jewish man and the whole family regularly attend synagogue. Benjamin Perl has said more than once that he is at the "cutting-edge of fighting assimilation." The case is currently being considered by the supreme court.

    Oh yeah, just looked back at Boliussa's comment and it's quite bizarre isn't it? They are calling someone an idiot for saying that the ruling from the school was kind of racist, but then counter that people convert to Judaism. It's as if they didn't notice that the mother herself was a convert to Judaism and yet was still not allowed to send her children there.
    I disagree with faith schools too, but find this especially worrying because parent heritage has nothing to do with a school's "ethos".

    What would happen if we use the word "rattle" instead of the word "caterpillar" in our texts?
    Well, it will bring more confusion.

    This isn't just about money. It's about doing what is morally right for the children. Schools are for education not indoctrination. Children should be taught what is true about the world. Their heads should not be filled with ancient superstitious nonsense. Children shouldn't be divided from one another by the faith of their parents either. It's high time faith schools were abolished.

    faith schools should only be paid for by the faith it represents not the state.But if this womans taxes support the school then she should have access.

    1) Churchgoers make up only a tiny proportion of the population. So it is mainly non-Churchgoers who are funding the schools which require Churchgoing for entry.
    2) The video shows that, in the case of Jewish schools, there is racism against "the wrong sort" of Jew.
    3) The massive rise in the number of faith schools often means that people find themselves with no choice but to use a faith school. So it is not a matter of "freedom of choice" at all.
    4) You'd prefer teen pregnancy?

    I think we agree somewhat but have had a miscommunication.I think that Boliussas comment is irrelevant. He, I believe is arguing that because you can convert to Judaism it is in some way different than if someone wasn't allowed in a school because of their race. I think both are wrong and irrelevant of race or religion anyone should be allowed into any school and I don't understand how having the wrong bloodline can have any sway. I also disagree with any faith schools, but thats another matter.

    You need to add some tags to this video.
    It's presently a big(ish) topic.

    She doesn't have to have the right ancestry. She converted before she had the child. Therefore the child was born from a Jewish mother. Unless you want to say that Judaism is a race....?

  • @boliussa
    @boliussa 11 років тому

    Haven't seen this in a while but anyhow, You don't get it. If the person had converted, they'd be Jewish. So ancestry isn't the be all and end all and needn't be relevant. It is in this case because she didn't convert. To be of a particular race is not the same as being Jewish. Jews are a religio-nation, people can convert. If the person discussed in this video had converted, then there'd be no issue.

    Nope. I wholeheartedly disagree. Faith schools have every right to exist, but they should not be funded by tax-payers (who, as we've established, mostly aren't religious), and they should not discriminate on the basis of bloodline (in the case of Jewish schools) or church attendance (CofE and RC schools).
