Ndugu gave me a lot of encouragement when we joint toured with Santana, he is a very kind, enthusiastic musician and very humble. This is an Afro solo if you can feel it.
In a interview he said that the reason he's got the cymbals like that was after a gig with miles and after a fantastic solo and gig, the bassplayer said "really good solo! Too bad noone could SEE what you were playing." After that he changed the cymbal setup. It also became an advantage when he did sessionwork and could place the music notes infront of him. It made it easier to play the music and look at the music director apparentley.
I'm not a drummer but I had the fortune of seeing him give advice to a drummer of the group I was with (all students). After struggling to get the groove right for some time Chancler came in and helped the drummer get it down in a minute. It was like watching a magician at work and I was very sad to hear of his passing years later. What a fantastic musician.
this man is my hero seriously not just for his iconic groove but as a human being as well. Watch some videos about him and the way he has gone about his life truly great man
He was a really nice guy. In 1989 I took my 2 children who were toddlers at the time to see him at a drum clinic in Omaha. He spent 10 - 15 minutes answering toddler questions about the drums and Micheal Jackson.
I first discovered Mr. Chancler on George Duke's "Faces In Reflection." The title track is one of my all time favorite GD grooves. They made odd time groove so damn hard!
on the thriller album the drummers were porcaro and ndugu ,ndugu played on songs like pyt billie jean and startin something and porcaro played on songs like thriller and beat it
I don't think I would want my crash cymbal to rock back and forth like his does after being hit. When it rocks back and forth like that, it affects the sound. That's just me. I like for a crash to be one steady sound, like Bonham's crashes.
AJ Donahue What does that even mean? I'm not saying he's "wrong" just b/c he chooses to mount his cymbals differently than I do. All I said was "I don't think I would want my crash cymbal to rock back and forth." There is no "wrong" when it comes to one's personal setup.
The guy is sponsored by Paiste and has been for a long time so I'm sure he could break as many cymbals as he wanted to. Its so fucked up that they give free shit to the players that need it the least.
This is so unbelievably messy! He seems like a cool dude, but man you can hear his brain catching up to his hands all the time. He falls in and out of the 1 and gets confused a lot. Guess soloing is not really his thing.
I really don't think there is a 1 throughout. The pulse changes a lot to me. The rhythms are very African. But I think his soloing is fine. Ndugu has nothing to prove; not as long as he's been playing.
I guess you need to stop considering the only right form of soloing is when it sounds like it's been sequenced on a computer. This is absolutely beautiful organic playing.
You're right. I always think it's hilarious when people absolutely refuse to criticize famous drummers. Obviously, they're not going to change as the result of one comment on UA-cam (which they won't likely see), but it's an important discussion to have, as people can learn. Ndugu displays beautiful and organic playing here, as has been said, but that does not change the fact that it's littered with phrase that Ndugu has not adequately trained himself to play. It's an immature style, analogous to an incredibly intellectual individual who chooses to speak like an imbecile.
Yes , ok he plays with Michael, miles etc but let me explain how is possible that someone that famous : -don't play in time !! -can't play a nice rudiments because he has a not good enough tecnique -taste obout fell are Very Questionable Maybe he has a good friends so that he played witj this musicians? Honestly I'm so shocked
I was fortunate enough to have drum lessons from him at USC.
How was it, I think Tail spinnin is my favorite drum shit ever, talk about independence???🤪🙃🤪🙃🤪, definitely best bass drum shit ever!!,

Rare one of those talented drummers who are so laid back yet coax every single tone and nuance from the kit.
Another life well lived!
Drum virtuoso, musician, artist.
And a fine human being.
Carry on Ndugu!!!

One of my personal drumming heroes, since I heard his playing with Weather Report on Tale Spinning at the late 70's ... R.I.P.
I mean dude hard to understand, his independence between what he was doin top and the crazy bass drum patterns it's like ummmmm???
One of my favourites.
Did so much on the jazz fusion scene in 70's/80's.
Played with so many.
Super cool.
Thank you.
The myriad of colors he's coaxing from his snare drum tho...!!! Amazing to see and hear a true master at work. Respect and RIP.
Great Drummer, Beautiful Kit, and Awesome socks
Here's some history, remember the classic Billie Jean drum groove!? Ndugu is the drummer !
Rest in peace Mr. Chancler.
Oh no😭
HOW AM I ONLY JUST COMING ACROSS THIS???? THIS IS FEEEEEEL!
this man is my hero seriously not just for his iconic groove but as a human being as well. Watch some videos about him and the way he has gone about his life truly great man

NDUGU CHANCLER BEAUTIFUL MAN!!! :DDD
One of the best sounding kits I've heard in a long time
Mr. Chancler recorded drums on Michael Jackson's Billie Jean, and it just so happens he's gonna be my teacher the next four years! WOO!
What a great feel this man had....technique as well. You can really feel every note he plays.
excelent drummer, groove, good sound, what else? thanks ndugu!!!!!!!!!
Great Drummer & Great Friends True It's Best Of Sounds !!!!
in the 80s..i kept seeing ndugu's name on sooo many soul funk rnb album tracks...i tried to copy him till i found my own style the master !!
still love his work!!
I’m feeling very smug that I got my hands on one of those snares today 😌 RIP Ndugu Chandler 🙏🏾
best set sound ever!!!!!!!!!!!!
on the thriller album the drummers were porcaro and ndugu ,ndugu played on songs like pyt billie jean and startin something and porcaro played on songs like thriller and beat it
One of the drummers who "talks" with his Instrument... very, very 😎
Super musicality!
Man, he's making love to those toms.
very very very cool
Legend.
Beautiful !
He were on Thriller as well! Amazing...
wow, crazy cymbal angles!
That crash sounds great
I hope to one day reach his level of excellence, which is very unlikely. But I guess I'll take my CHANCLER.
BA DUM TSS
anyone?
Well played...
😂😂😂😂I'm dying
Sadly though😢 you're gonna have to be the next Ndugu Chancler because he's in a better place
haha. like what you did there. Quite a 'Cymbalic' gesture.
☆ R.I.P.
Leon "Ndugu" Chancler
Excellent!!
RIP Ndugu
The cymbal setup makes sense because he only has to move up, not out in order to hit them. It's an ergonomic setup.
Yeahhhhh spang a lang spang a lang spang spang ga lang ... :-) this great!
He be the man.
what is the rudiments is he playing between 0:00 and 2:00 ?
bet a night of jazz will work out his shoulder like crazy :)
Gran percusionista! No os lo perdáis con Stanley Clarke y Patrice Rushen.
This is an old buddy of Dugies!
It makes sense though. It's technically a more ergonomic way of setting them up. He barely has to move to reach them.
That guy teaches at my jazz camp
LEFT FOOT!
He is from Louisiana :)
Improvising... Taking chances.....
Nope, that was Ndugu. Apparently he also played on PYT and Startin Something
R.I.P. Leon
R.I.P
What snare is that?
Jelly.
Bravo a Morgan Freeman
Yamaha of course

Yeah, he's probably wrong.

It doesn’t seem to have affected his getting calls.
'in order to play jazz you must spang a lang'
Poor rides. Key-hole: COME TO ME.
Rest In Peace
Rest in peace.
RIP ...
R. I. P.
I thought John Robinson laid down that silky groove?
🧨🚬😃👍🏼
R.ise I.n P.ower
interesting
Michael Jackson “Billie Jean” Drummer Ndugu Chancler Dead at 65
ua-cam.com/video/nau1wu8Rm_I/v-deo.html
RIP
I know, technically though as long as he has sleeves his cymabls should be okay :)
dad from family matters can groove
outstanding
Strange sounding combination, that kit. Miking is not doing justice to them?
I dont feel that this was an accurate representation of his talent
That's an odd place for a stick bag. It's causing his snare to move all over the place.
Odd cymbal set up??? but hey whatever works for ya.
(ONLY)! JAZZ!MUSIC! WORKS! NOW! YOU! KNOW! THE! (JAZZ!MAN)! *MIKE! SPENCE!
really tho???
the way he sets up cymbals
why
+zackdoom It's more ergonomic to move up to reach something than out. If you look at how much he has to move, it's not all that much.
thanks. They'd probably break easier though
+zackdoom not necessarily. With proper technique, which he has, they wouldn't be easy to break.
why not
The guy is sponsored by Paiste and has been for a long time so I'm sure he could break as many cymbals as he wanted to. Its so fucked up that they give free shit to the players that need it the least.
this angles, doesnt look very comfortbale..:/
Yeah? So, what's so great about that drum beat?
This is so unbelievably messy! He seems like a cool dude, but man you can hear his brain catching up to his hands all the time. He falls in and out of the 1 and gets confused a lot. Guess soloing is not really his thing.

This is the nearest Ewe and Yoruba drumming I've ever heard with drum kit. Another beautiful guy - Brice Wassy, UUH!
I guess you need to stop considering the only right form of soloing is when it sounds like it's been sequenced on a computer. This is absolutely beautiful organic playing.
