  • This land is used since many generations for grazing animals in between the olive trees. The land is very degraded because of overgrazing, the soil is very shallow and covered with rocks. A condition and setting found not only throughout Greece but the whole Mediterranean area. The regeneration potential is high and finding the best strategies to regenerate this kind of land is key to this program. Through our training activities and our broad reach we can increase the impact of this pilot farm tremendously. Further on, volunteers and youth workers from all over the world will be involved in this regeneration project, learning how to apply the acquired knowledge in their home.

Hey you guys, great projects you have! I am in central mexico and dealing with low water, high temperature fluctuations, in short semi desert conditions. A few years ago I was introduced to the Regrarians in Australia where I learned a ton about all kinds of issues, especially Managed rotational Grazing. I highly recommend you check them out. They are very NON-dogmatic but have a greatly structured design process that can be applied to any kind of climate, clients needs and wishes etc. And there are hundreds of practitioner of all kinds of specialties on their workplace. Such an incredible resource.
If you are not interested in their program, I would definitely look into managed rotational grazing to help improve soils. Greg Judy is a regenerative rancher in the USA who grazes sheep (and cattle but separately) on pastures and silvo-pasture and he has LOTS of videos for free :-) on youtube. You can learn how he fences, increases his forage, and reduces (to pretty much zero, I believe) his inputs =less costs =more income for the farmer. Lots of success with all your projects...
PS: just checked your website and see you know all this already, sorry for preaching to the converted ;-)

If the runoff from surrounding hills and the land could be pooled at the land (since average rainfall is 900 mm). Can irrigation transform the land into a lush pasture with olive grove or do shade from olives prevents the pasture or irrigation damages the olives?
