Calls For A New Royal Yacht To Be Commissioned And Named After Prince Philip

- Since the death of Prince Philip, there have been calls for a new royal yacht to be commissioned, bearing his name.
The former Royal Yacht Britannia, which was retired in 1997, transported the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh on 968 state visits, covering 700,000 miles over more than four decades.
Retired Vice Admiral John McAnally was one of the naval officers on board and remembers the time he spent at sea with the royal family.

It would probably be much more to Philip's liking to name like the next British Aircraft Carrier after him, or a cruiser class.
Okay, that is a very good idea. I can totally understand though the Queen wanting the name to be Prince Philip though considering that it’s quite in line with the sort of thinking that Queen Victoria had with Prince Albert when he passed away. Although indeed naming a cruiser class after him would be a cool idea as well. Imagine if we had that though alongside three aircraft carriers that all had the names of the top three most senior Royal officials. WICKED😲👌🏼
No disagree destroyer class would suite him better as he specialized in asw having passed the western approaches course (WATU)probably the last one to pass away and his personality fits them fun loving (they go damn fast and handle like a speedster)but the hard working backbone of navy FYI very intelligent man who knew exactly what he was saying sometimes using comedy effect to put people at ease when they spoke to him meet him a few and always made you chuckle
The RN won’t have cruisers agin.. well not in our life times.
@@danielwhyatt3278 why not something name after king George vI
I daresay Prince Philip would much prefer to have a proper naval vessel named after him.
Definitely more fitting
A bit of a false title here, as after watching the video all the way through, nowhere does it mention the commissioning of a new Royal yacht.
Hear hear, and what a pity. The video's good enough to stand on it own without a clickbait title.
Let those who are in favour of it contribute to its build, upkeep and maintenance.
Ok so the nation then yeah.
I've visited Britannia. She's still afloat and, by my uneducated eye, still capable of being put back into service. Still maintained on daily basis by a dedicated crew.
Not even too big of a ship to afford. She has a design that makes her appear as big as the Titanic in photos, but is more like a particularly large steel-hulled yacht.
Unfortunately she isn’t as a museum ship her engines have been more or less stripped out, also her hull and interior condition has degraded to the point where making her seaworthy would cost more than putting a new ship into service, she sailed over a million miles and that took its toll.
Well...then that one will definitely suffice.
Her keels not seaworthy, she'd need to be hauled out and an extensive refit be conducted if its even possible to haul her out at all? No if they really wanted to do this to honour Prince Phillip best to design a new class of Warship or name one of the new classes HMS Prince Phillip.
Her engines are fully jntact
@@trisjack82 No i'm sure her engine room is fully intact, and unchanged since her maiden voyage in the 1950's
I got to go on it and I was shocked there is even an operating room in case somebody needs emergency surgery. It is really amazing and I don’t know why it can’t be in use.
Because it is patriotic, that's why it isn't in use. From the name, to the flags, to the symbolism, it embodied the nation. That's the real reason why Blair got rid of it, and the reason no government, Conservative or Labour, will ever bring it back.
It’s because the royal yacht was originally meant to be the primary casualty receiving ship for use in conflict. This is also why there are other medical features such as an oversized washing facility for the cleaning of hospital bedding, scrubs etc.
@@carmina776 Not to forget it was meant to evacuate the royal family in the event of a conflict
@@sonkejager3305 where did you learn of this? When HMY Britannia was commissioned, it was literally made to be a primary casualty receiving ship (PCRS) and it was even considered for use during the falklands. You can learn more about it if you visit the museum / ask Royal Navy officers who served in HMY.
@@carmina776 That I did, I have been there several times I dare say, we are both correct. The plan I am referring to was a contingency plan within Operation Candid. (Source : WO 32/21796 Protection of the Royal Family in an emergency, The National Archives)
Any Royal Yacht now would be a pure financial burden, but name a suitable warship HMS The Prince Philip would be rather wonderful.
we do not need to pay for a jolly boat for the royal family . They want one the royal family have enough money to buy one . for many years we have cut the navy army and airforce . the days of royal yachts are over
Should be an aircraft carrier.
I think decommissioning of the Royal Yacht was a mistake. It showcased Britain to the world. There is a huge resurgence of interest in sea travel. People like ships and like to go on cruises. The image of the Royal Yacht carrying the Royal Flag entering a foreign port on a royal visit cannot be replicated by any other PR approach. It is unique. Money pinching civil servants pulled the plug not realising what value they lost to the nation and to the Commonwealth.
Civil servants instructed by the Blair government it should be said. Blair did away with the Royal Tournament as well. Britannia paid its way on state visits etc as trade deals were struck on board. How could foreigners not be impressed negotiating on the Royal Yacht? A Royal Yacht pays for itself.

You can if you want? Or do you grudge one pence to he,p build it... tight as.
The same mugs who always end up paying. Well, I'm bald and don't possess a forelock, so count me out.
They should commission one
How about a new actual navly ship named after him. We could do with those more then a roaly yacht. Im not against a roaly yacht named after him tho but seeing as we need more ships on the navy rather it be that
You haven’t a clue. A royal yacht Makes the UK stand out, bringing in lots of investment ect. No mater if we had a new royal yacht the money wouldn’t come from the navy. We spend 14 billion on foreign aid every single years. Take 0.5% of that and we can have a new yacht
@@bulletproofguy5112 People are going to invest in the UK because we have a royal yacht? What a strange way that would be to decide where to invest...
@@benm752 it adds EXTRA investment, Royalty are huge pull to the uk.
@@bulletproofguy5112 Sweet jesus. The bloke is spot on. Name a newly commissioned RN ship after him. Not that he is hear to know it.
So, are we buying the steel for the new yacht from China, India or Belgium? Only the government failed to bail out our only steelworks. 47% of respondents to the study on .yougov said they opposed this commission and only 29% were in support. Put the money into something operationally useful at very least.
Hmm, Boris could furnish it.
Sorry, disagree that time has passed. There are too many more important things that need attending to.
Like foreign aid?
Dragging the Queen into politics and using her late husband’s name without her consent isn’t really what we should focusing on
Commission a new ultra modern Naval vessel and name it after him rather than a leisure cruiser!!
If the don’t build a new Royal yacht the Royal Navy should commission a 3rd Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carrier and name it HMS Duke of Edinburgh
Yeah - thats the best idea i've heard yet!
@@JCD275 in my opinion they should’ve named RO9 HMS Duke of Edinburgh instead of HMS Prince of Wales. Even though HMS Queen Elizabeth is named after the 1st Queen Elizabeth.

I think a replacement for Britannia is long overdue and HMY Prince Philip would be a fitting memorial to 'the duke'. I suspect the cost could be readily met by public donations. Someone could commission a poll should there be any doubts...
I knew a sailor who wanted to train on helicopters but they made him go in Britannia as barge crew. He couldn’t understand it because he was really keen on helicopters and hated being a decorative sailor. I didn’t tell him it must have been because he was so strikingly handsome and no one told him.

If successive governments can send Billions to foreign countries, they can refit Britannia or commission a new ship.
Listening to Vice Admiral McAnally
it seems a good idea to have Royal Yacht
Definitely not. Prince Philip would have an absolute blue fit over this suggestion. It'd be a mush more fitting idea to name a new Royal Navy ship in his honour.
Can double up as troop transport in times of need if a bid deployment is needed like in the Falkland war
Interesting, but this doesn't address a new yacht whatsoever.
Better get it named quickly, before Megan Markle demands it be named after her .
A dual role Royal yacht/ship perhaps.
Build it as a replacement for Argus. 2 roles, diplomatic & as a hospital ship.
this is only an excuse put forward for the public to buy it for them lies and spin.
@@patricktracey7424 RFA Argus needs replaced soon, its hospital role is priceless. This could be a win win. The RN gets its hospital ship, a UK yard gets the work & the govt gets its floating exhibition centre/embassy. Lets face it the various govts over the decades used Britannia far more than the royals did.
What a waste of money
Maybe better yet name a Royal Navy warship after him ! Very appropriate !
We want supercarriers, not super yachts
Seems like a waste of tax money...
Nope.
“Calls for....” Who is calling?
Exactly...Who is calling...Anyway, regardless the answer is a definite NO. !!!! Some people already have WAY, WAY, more than enough.!!!
A Facebook group with over 1 millions likes did a poll and the was 90% in favour of it...

I had the privilege to see the Royal Yacht when she did her farewell trip around the British Isles. I was parked on the Antrim Coast Road. Cars were parked as far as your eyes could see blaring their horns as Britannia emerged from the mist into brilliant sunshine. I can honestly say I have never seen such an impressive sight in my life. She was absolutely gleaming and made me so proud to be British. The yacht was the envy of the world wherever she went generating billions in trade deals. If anything could put the Great back into Britain it would be a new Royal Yacht built in a British shipyard!
Not just any shipyard - John Browns & Co. of Clydebank. The same Scottish shipyard which built the RMS Queen Mary, RMS Queen Elizabeth, HMS Hood - and many hundreds of Britain's most iconic ships.
And WHO kept the upkeep of it!?? Not them, we little insignificant SUBJECTS! 🤫
Great idea, As long as the monarchy pay for it...
Lol as if they would. The money they have id already scrounged off tax payers. No chance they wouldnt expect us to pay for it too
They make the uk billions...
@Rob in tourism...they all need to stay somewhere, eat, travel...
He would probably think more of a Life Guard Fleet 🙏🥀
We really should have a new Royal Yacht, we are so afraid of people thinking that we are wasting money that we forget that how powerful our history and prestige is no longer represented. In general, the people of the US are so proud of Air Force One and what it represents that the cost of keeping it is a secondary concern. Are we such a backwards Country that there are those that would be proud to make our top politicians and Royal Family travel on EasyJet? A TV programme recently talked about the cost of the Royal Family and an anti-royalist stated her true estimate of how much the Royal Family cost, I can’t remember the actual quoted figure, but I remember calculating the number she quoted in context with the cost of running the Country. It equated to running the NHS for half a day, running the Welfare State system for about an hour or the total cost to the taxpayer in dealing with illegal immigration for about a day! What cost the pride in our great country.
The president was voted in, the queen was not. I have no pride in some old woman who was born to the right person and then gets payed for it
@@aaroncousins4750 The Prime Minister was voted in and if you remember back David Cameron took his family on holiday using EasyJet, do we we believe that he just rocked up and just his family we’re on the plane, of course not, they would have charted the whole flight for all of the people he has around him. I’m not particularly proud of our Prime Minister traveling like that, what kind of world power does that project? The Royal Yacht and the Queen’s flight weren’t just there for Royalty, they were used by British VVIP’s.
@@wokohedgehogs no, it was used for the royal family world tours (holidays) to quote philip, he enjoyed it because he could get away from the media and relax on it. That ship will have cosy over 10million of taxpayers money in todays world. Lizzy gets 116 million pounds a year, she can pay for her own royal yacht

Balls to a new yacht! Give NHS doctors and nurses a pay rise!
They are paid enough, many doctors are paid too much.

A £200 million ship has been announced by Boris Johnson to be named HMS Prince Phillip. So what's it going to be - Prince Charles love boat?. The RAF already have an Airbus A330-200 flying the Union Flag and called United Kingdom, so why have another yacht?
If these rich, entitled people really want a new boat let them pay for it. They have plenty of unearned money taken from the people of this country over the years.
As much as I’d like to support this, the Royal Yacht has had its time in my eyes. It was great taking the Royal Family to and from the colonies, but now it would probably hardly get used.
It also got used for other things. Britannia was there at the handover of Hong Kong to support Chris Patten then Head Honcho. It's served as an envoy ship for Prestigious meetings.
Joseph Fawcett+ It did far more than that, my ship was Guardship to Britannia, when HM Queen and HRH Prince Phillip visited South Africa in 1995, It is estimated by the Overseas Trade Board that events held on board the yacht helped raise £3 billion for HM Treasury between 1991 and 1995.
@@henryvagincourt4502 I fully agree. Money pinching civil servants pulled the plug not realising what value they lost to the nation
@@kaamkmca Also, they could have done what the Danish and the Norwegians had done: replace the steam turbines with a diesel engine. The Royal Yachts Dannebrog and Norge are older and still in service. HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh once said that what they (the government) should have done.
No thanks. Maybe a new battle cruiser or carrier fleet perhaps.
We could of put new engines in Britania and give her make over but we have sold it now so my wife tells me, I thought it was still a museum peace.
Oh really? So did I!?😯😔 that is a shame. I thought she was indeed still a museum piece or at the very least still owned by the family but at permanent mooring. If they gave her a good modern upgrade I bet they could totally combine her with hybrid engines and solar panels on the roof to supplement some power, to be in line more with Prince Philip‘s ethos.
Her keel is compromised, she cannot sail again
@Tree Fiddy The Britannia is still a Museum Ship moored at Edinburgh, Scotland...
If the royals need a new boat to play with they can pay for it themselves as they are so rich build cheep houses for the young
The Royal family of Liechtenstein is said to have more liquid money than Queen Elizabeth II. A lot of HM worth is locked in real estate that cant be sold or profits that have already been budgeted for charity or the upkeep of the palaces. Though there is money already earmarked for the building of a new yacht. I can't remember who but some rich bloke, a friend of the Queens, died a few years ago and left enough money in a trust on the understanding it would only be used to build a new royal yacht. The only government approval needed would be for some general running costs like the Navy personal that would be needed to run it and fuel. HMS Britannia wasn't a toy it was very important for diplomacy in the common wealth and the wider world. When the Queen was abroad it is said she would occasionally hold diplomatic parties aboard ship which occasionally was regarded as neutral territory in conflicts.
That said in the modern age planes are the easiest ways to travel but a plane wouldn't be big enough for a party. With how busy the modern age is few have time to travel by the slowness of the sea. There is a reason that cruises are done by old people more and that modern cruisers have dedicated storage for dead bodies as its very common for a passenger to die on every cruise.
In regards to housing there did use to be a law that prevented mortgages being more than 2.5 times a persons yearly salary now the limit is closer to 10 times. If borrowing was kept low house prices were low, since no one could afford the mortgage. In the early 90s house prices were closer to £30,000 than £300,000. The other reason for unaffordable housing is more people immigrating to the country than the country can build houses! There were two reasons for this: one the EU allowing poorer countries into the union so people from eastern Europe could move en mass in an uncontrolled manner for a "better" life into western Europe. The Second reason was America destabilising the middle east with support from the Labour Government. The other problem is that rich middle classes buy houses then rent them instead of letting younger poorer buyers get them. Or the rich buy cheap houses do all sorts of renovations and then sell them for far higher, again taking them out of first time buyer reach. Personally I don't think private people should be allowed to rent more than one property. Between 2007 and 2017 the number of renting properties doubled from 10% of houses to 20.3%. Just think how many people could buy houses if more of these rented houses were put up for private ownership instead of having to wait for new estates to be built. Houses shouldn't be built cheap they should be quality builds just sold cheaper. Property developers should be made to take bigger hits to their profits to make new housing more affordable but not trash housing.
It was a great asset to the Country as it was used as a place of welcome to dignitaries from all over the World that the Queen as an Ambassador used to great effect on behalf of the Nation also for overseas trips and for personal use which if I remember correctly was minimal by comparison . The Blair government of course saw it differently and I suspect not just as a unnecessary drain on the economy but for their own reasons known only to them. The only time the Queen was seen crying and shame on the people who made the decision to decommission it.I’m quite sure it can be re-commissioned from its place in Leith Edinburgh.
Just to clarify a couple of things. It was actually John Major that choose to decommission the ship not Blair. The Royal Navy then began drawing up plans for the replacement ship. Major then pondered his decision and did not actually commission a replacement. In large part because at the time 1996/7 the Royal family were going through a low point in terms of popularity and Major worried how spending such large sums would be seen by the country as a whole. Diana died in the first months of Blair's time in office and the popularity of the Royals hit a new low. I suspect this and his perhaps misguided sense of a New Britain moving forward persuaded Blair to cancel a new Royal Yacht.
As for Britannia herself, well she has been a museum piece for nearly 24 Years. I have been onboard twice. It is now very dated to say the very least. A new ship would be a better way forward if that it truly what the country wants, complete with modern conference suites and the ability to work as a true outpost for Britain abroad. Just to end on a more controversial point. We are considering commissioning a Yacht at a time when the US is giving serious consideration to buying one of the new generation of supersonic jets for the president.
Greet them at one of the palaces.
Should be built in England
By all means commission a new yacht. But the tax payer shouldn't have to pay for it.

Where would the money come from? I thought the armed forces are going to be streamlined?
Would it be possible to create some form of modular accomodation that could fit in to the helicopter hanger of some / all of our fighting ships?
The container could be loaded / unloaded to allow for an easy conversion? Its got to be cheaper and still provide reasonable style....
I love Queen Elizabeth. God save the queen.
I'm guessing this has already been in the consideration for a while. New shipbuilding rejuvenation, post Brexit "global Britain", and the need for a hospital/ training vessel all coming together at this right time. The queen's Platinum jubilee next year, i can see this as a right move to build a new royal yacht in prince Philip's name. They'll need to really advertise the hospital/ training/ multi functional side of this ship more than the royal yacht function, but i'm sure the media will scandalize this new yacht anyway, and try to get it cancelled.
Click bait
All very well providing the Royal Family with their personal yacht but ask Vice Admiral Mcanally how much it would cost to run per mile, taking into account the protection the Royal Navy would provide.

“The Duke “ sounds great
I think we should keep with the times and call it Yachty McYaught Face. As should the new carriers be renamed to Fighty McFight Face 1 and Fight McFight Face 2.
So will this new ship be built with Australian, Canadian or British taxpayers money? When so many in our respective countries are losing their livlihoods, you want to build a boat for the elite! RIDICULOUS!
And today they have announced it’s actually happening 😀👍

The royals and their mates want a new yacht? How about they pay for it by themselves? I'm sure Prince Philip would have preferred something useful that would benefit others. If it has to be a ship, how about a hospital ship that could travel the world and help others?
Splashing taxpayers money on a luxury yacht when the country just suffered its worst economic crisis since WW2 is an extremely stupid idea, and I doubt the royal family would even consider doing something like that at a time like this. The old duke would turn over in his grave!

Why not just build a hospital?
@@Uio3eva
Good point, but you can’t move a hospital. I was thinking the ships primary role would be as a mobile hospital vessel (helps with disaster relief around the world.) and when it’s not doing that it can either be setup as the royal yacht or as something else entirely. Let’s say as a fast troopship, or a medium sized patrol craft. If we are to have royal yacht is this day and age (and I think we Should, as Britannia did a lot of good for British interests when she took the royal family round the world.) then that vessels needs to be worth more to country than just being a royal yacht.
@@jacobmoss6830 A royal yacht is not only too expensive (hundreds of millions to build, and the last one cost around £11 million a year I think which contributed towards it being scrapped), but it’s also morally unjustifiable. How can we cut our foreign aid budget by a third and say there’s no money for pay rises for frontline NHS staff, but we have enough money for a superyacht so a bunch of unelected billionaires can go on holiday in it. I mean, we’re not Saudi Arabia, yet. Such a yacht would not have any other practical use, and even if it were used as a hospital ship as you say, it would be much more value for money to build a ship specifically for that purpose - it would be misleading to depict the yacht as anything other than a means for the royal family and other elites to go on luxurious holidays at taxpayers’ expense.
The plans commenced by Boris Johnson for a replacement should be restarted. We built Britannia just after the war when we were almost bankrupt. The estimate of about £250M is nothing when compared to the GDP. The benefits to trade and commerce would be huge, as Britannia proved to be. Let us stop pussey footing around and get it built.
