I love how even though this is an audio podcast first, as someone watching the video, the changing background as you walkaround is really nice. Especially in the marina - getting a cheeky peek at different vessels.
Nice questioners 👍🏻 For Tom , on the Aluminium cat and noise question. The aluminium hul has a foam coating on the inside. Not everywhere but the hull make no more noise than any other. If the catamaran is build right it would not have problem with a ‘donkey clap’ that the sea slapping agains the flat part of the cabin in between the hull. Some camper type cats doe have a low flat bottom and that donkey is sailing with that boot all the time .
Great tick-tack chat, as previous part. Both of you answering the same questions half the world apart, but very synergised, almost completing each other's sentences as if you guys were sitting next to each other. This is underappreciated i think, especially for the ones only listening to audio only. I'm sure partly is thanks to the magic of editing, but mostly is just you guys.. What type of catamaran is that at 3:50 ? Interesting sugarscoop shapes..
The bit about the "bum gun" was very interesting, but I couldn't quite figure out how it was used. @36:19 Could you just move the camera back a bit so that we see the whole arrangement? Is the small basin on the right part of the procedure or just a fixture for the jet?
Jamie: Your comedic skills are in full force -- both witty and funny. Your dry as toast take on Liz during anchoring ("...putting on her makeup...") and your perfect imitation of backward talking! Perfect. Of course, questions beget questions: why is there no music in Asahan? Best regards as always. Thank you.
We've experienced the effects of that first hand, literally following another boat that was handing out cash to locals by paying twice the going rate for diesel.
Hi guys, thanks for taking my question in this video. You asked if my data was anecdotal or from a report. It's anecdotal. Here on the east coast of the states, there has definitely been the "thought" that a lot of new boat owners that jumped in to the game, particularly around COVID. I've heard this from brokers and insurance agents. What I didn't know if this was impacting global cruising or restricted to our area (and perhaps the caribbean). To a certain extent, I think the feeling is that it impacted the price of boats, extended new build timeliness, etc. Anyway, I'm delighted to hear that cruising in southeast Asia has been largely unaffected. Cheers and thanks for fielding my question!
It was a great question and something we do hear about. I think if there was an increase in boat ownership around that time, we wouldn't see its effects for a few years until people started moving on from their home countries.
Jamie - given your answer to our question, it is probably just as well that you are out of Liz's reach  Like you two we also seem to have reached a telepathic level of awareness of what the other is doing when anchoring. I think that is simply the advantage of lots of working together with routines that become established as good working practices for a particular boat. We did try following the advice of the previous owners for anchoring and decided against it after just two attempts. And finally, the rather poorly named "bum guns". I am pleased to report that our boat has a bidet 👍
Really good as usual. Bum Guns, yes, that is the way to go. My only problem with the experiments I have done are with aiming and pressure. My shower fitting is too bulky for the role, so have been accumulating some bits to build a separate “facility”. The Catalpa family used one when in your area, but were reluctant to talk about it. It’s kind of curious that you very reserved Brits are OK to talk about it but the Aussies, not so much. The best expose on the subject is in the movie “Why Him”.
Ha, Jaime gave us a good chuckle! 😆 And agree about the bum wash..paper is just smearing it about! LOL Wishing the best for his parents, and hope you two can be together again soon (if not already, given the timing of the vids!). Question regarding health insurance: do you have international insurance, or just wait for trips home and visit local clinics, as needed? Thanks! ❤
I am a fan of bilge keels because of much less rolling at anchor among other things. I have owned many boats and the Cross trimaran is my first choice.
Stephen does the anchoring and Latrell does the helm when we anchor. We found it worked that way better for us. You got the same issues with abandoned boats in Florida.
I saw my first Bidet in Sharja UAE in a hotel I was put into being deployed to Iraq in '04... You guys have a very good point why here in the West we don't have this item... Notwithstanding, I want to replace the shower head with a stronger 'Gun' feature... Thanks for the update...! Fair Winds...
My first introduction to a bidet was not in France but when I was in Istanbul and it was a new experience, the apartment had small diameter sewage pipes so paper could not be flushed without the risk of blocking said pipes, here in the UK it's not a thing so we have improvised with a small hand held shower head ( it's bloody cold in winter ) just be grateful it's not a WC under the stairs ( very early 80's fad ) I knew some folks that had them lol.
First time I came across water instead of paper was in Turkey too. I was scared. My uncle had a cottage that started off with an outside loo, and then progressed to a loo under the stairs. I was scared of them too 😅
@@followtheboat The outside loo, awful in the winter, cold drafty and full of spiders oh and the cut squares of newspaper on a bit of string, my parents home still had one until recently.
Hi very informative as always 👍 I have a question you mention you can't have animals like cats on board, but why you say that? Many UA-camrs out there have cats and dogs onboard 😊
I bought a bidet attachment for my home toilet at the start of the pandemic (amid stories of toilet paper shortage), and I find it annoying when I have to go without it. This is one of the things I am adding to the boat. As far as remote work goes, there seems to be less of it available. More companies want people "back in the office" at least part of every week, but they fail to explain why. Personally, I find commuting annoying and would rather not do it if I can avoid it.
Interesting you describing sailing in the area of waterspouts after the sinking of the Bayesian this week. The cause seems to have shifted drastically, and now all fingers point towards the crew. I'm sure it was scary for you and for them. (Not comparing the two outcomes. Only the sighting of waterspouts). I love the split screen Q&A. The fields are beautiful. You bring much joy in your presentation. Thanks for sharing.
so what do you keep on the boat that is your own personal comfort item whether it is a food or picture or song or whatever, for when things are bad or you get down, it helps you get through it all?
I admit, I have never tried; I am wondering, if you just use the jet of water, no fingers, how do you know when you are clean? And then, you just walk out with the water running down your legs, looking like you are incontinent? Do you wait until you get dry or do you pull you underwear up onto your freshly showered bottom? These are all serious questions, no sarkasm at all. On the point of composting toilets, I could not agree more, it is not a solution for a sailboat, as you point out. The smell of urine collected in the urin bottle for a few days, is absolutly revolting. I don't even want to go into emptying the number 2 stuff, which means you have to carry the whole thing somewhere and flip it over into a plastic bag to take out of the boat. Nightmare ;-)
Must admit I don't dry but in the tropics you dry off pretty quickly. People do use paper to dry though. After a while you just know when you are clean.
@@Jarek12010 dont worry about ur finger touching the sh*t. U have plenty of water and soap to wash ur hand, why worry about dirty shitty hand 😁😁😁 In tropical climate, where sweat is your good buddy, imagine the sweat get into ur uncleaned crack and melting the stains on the crack. So uncomfortable
Since I first started working in Asia 20 years ago I have never ( when I have had a choice) used toilet paper. I find the stuff inefficient and frankly does not do the job .. In my French homes I always installed bum guns. I absolutely dreaded visiting relatives in the UK or going out and about anywhere in Europe and being obliged to return to the filthy habit of ‘smearing’ with paper. .. the first thing I did when I started renovating a boat I have bought in Langkawi is install a bum gun ..
Hey Jamie, glad you like the Malo 38. I own hull number 169 aka SV Lark. So, here is my offer, you and Liz come visit me in NZ, and I will let you take her out and I will show you what beautful anchrages there are here.
@@followtheboat Didn't recognise one no, but laughed aloud at the sugar scoop end of the boat you walked past, the last 4 letters of it's name/logo spelling "anus"
The bum gun is the only way to go and if they are not already installed, that is the first order of modification. Cannot be walking around with a stinky bum.
Okay here's my simple answer to that perplexing question. In America we don't like anything other than toilet paper to touch our brown eye. Call us homophobic or what ever you want but thats just the way that it is. Or maybe it's arrogance like if we didn't come up with the idea than it's no good. Either way we don't like it. But honestly I think it's my first excuse. 😊
My wife is Thai and was a school teacher when we met. They use bum guns there even if the toilet isn't a flush type. i installed them here in my bathrooms in the USA - I wouldn't do it any other way - willingly. Look for "diaper sprayers" online or look for Muslim foot washing sprayer. Last time I looked they start about $30. We use plain unheated water. Surprise! Your anus does not have many temperature nerve endings. After the first 2 times you won't be phased by it. If you fell and got dog poop on your hand would you wipe it with a paper towel and call it good for the day? No? Why do you do it with your butt then?
No way! Loo paper and wipes (biodegradable or not) will clog every sailboat loo. But more importantly, washing a bum with soap and water is the best way for total cleanliness. Liz
Have you got a question? We'll try to answer anything you throw at us. Ask it here and we'll add it to the list... 🤓
Bum guns-the best thing since sliced bread! I will never live without one!

Maybe we'll get Liz to record in the hard stand area next time, there's a ton of interesting boats there.

Interesting sugarscoop? Maybe. With marinas charging by the foot, it needs to do something.
Genuinely unscripted. Liz said in the previous Q&A we agree on pretty much everything and think along the same lines so our answers are often similar.
The bit about the "bum gun" was very interesting, but I couldn't quite figure out how it was used. @36:19 Could you just move the camera back a bit so that we see the whole arrangement? Is the small basin on the right part of the procedure or just a fixture for the jet?
No, that's our normal basin. The mixer tap has an extendable hose that can be pulled out and used like a shower.
Jamie: Your comedic skills are in full force -- both witty and funny. Your dry as toast take on Liz during anchoring ("...putting on her makeup...") and your perfect imitation of backward talking! Perfect.

We asked a local why there was no music and, deadpan, he said "if anyone plays music we kill them" 😮
Great episode, informative and relevant. Always enjoy your presentations.
Much appreciated, Philip 👍
Great show with the most realistic and useful information. Not paying extra is the most important thing to get across to new sailors in remote areas.
