Watching this right now. I have to say that the series of London videos that you posted were really a good watch and I looked forward to each new one as you released them. It looks like you and your friends had a great time. Thanks again for sharing those.
The Fall still hold a special place in my heart. You are holding a good CD sampler for your baptism (“Hip Priest”). If you notice, all the other commenting Fall fans are citing different albums to experience. Such is their breadth of their influence. From my collection I will offer 2000’s “The Unutterable”. A very enjoyable The London Series videos, thanks for sharing.
Glad you liked London. Richard Hawley is awesome. You may not hear this but for some reason he reminds me of Roy Orbison.... fantastic music. Has a 60's croon style
Yes, that Roy Orbison vibe is strong.
great shout re Richard Hawley - crafted and hugely talented
What a great haul from a fantastic looking trip. Fairport Convention! Yes! And kudos on the two Beatle pickups. And agree 100% with your your Brit's can drink comment. I dated a Brit and went on a pub crawl.... and as the day wore on I was the only one actually crawling!
Great way to sum up your London trip and all of those videos were memorable! Thanks again!
Sounds like you had a great time surrounded by great music! Lots of ‘new to me’ albums that I’ll have to listen to. Thanks for sharing your birthday with us. 🎉
Hi Mazzy, so much listening for you to do.
Glad you enjoyed the Richard Hawley - I thought you would. The Alexi Murdoch record was from me. He’s a Scottish folk singer that I particularly love. The Matthew Halsall record was also from me. He’s a young jazz trumpeter, composer & band leader from Manchester.
It was great to spend some time with you. Hope we get the chance again sometime.
D 😊
Mathew Halsall was an excellent choice, David 👍
Thanks John. My son Tom first turned me on to MH. I’ve seen him play many times and have all his records. What a talent he is.
I knew that Alexi Murdoch album had come from you, David. I remember you waxing lyrical about it a while back. I must check it out.
Nice bookend to the trip and I like the way you documented the visit with the record milestones along the way; first time I had acted as a "sherpa" like that, but it was a very enjoyable day and I hope we can replicate it with a few of the English blokes you met - thanks for the shirt by the way - Paul
Well two of those bands would have albums in my all time top 50, but it would be 'Bless The Weather' by John Martyn & 'Unhalbricking' by Fairport. Great video Mazzy. I was half expecting you to take a sip from that pint of Guiness you bought in The Blue Posts. 😆
Hi Mazzy - really enjoyable watch, and loved your video's of your London trip. I think people from everywhere who really love music can come together like you did in London, be totally comfortable with each other and end up friends for life. That's the power of music - hope you keep in touch with everyone. Bye the way, your English folk records are excellent. Cheers Doug (from Down Under)
Awesome to see you presenting the camp fire tapes. Just had a listen, lucky to have a copy.
Saw Richard Hawley at Barrowlands, Glasgow. Best Sound at a concert ever
Great to be a take along on this trip and to see you are back. Bumbershoots this weekend. Don't recognize anyone except Kim Gordon. Saw Donovan in the past. Memorable. Thanks.
Happy birthday Mazzy. Nice to spend it with folks who share much in common. I am always alone on mine.
Watched all the London vids in one go, loved it.
I will be going to Cairo in December so i look forward to digging and finding new local music. Any vinyl lovers in Cairo give me a shout, recommendations etc or maybe we can get together.
Thanks Mazzy.
Hex Enduction Hour, Grotesque, The Wonderful and Frightening World of, and This Nations Saving Grace, are all essential Fall albums. Anything by The Fall is worth getting. Love your channel bro!
Enjoyed your London trip videos. And enjoyed this video of your vinyl purchases. My best friend has dual US and Ireland citizenship and moved from Florida to the outskirts of Dublin last month. He is loving it there and told me this week that he wants me to come visit him next month and we'll see the sights in Ireland and take a 2-3 day trip to London. Since I am 67, and it would be my last trip overseas, I cam going to take him up on the offer and hopefully find some vinyl gems. Glad a little voice in my head told me to renew my passport and get the REAL ID drivers license 90 days ago.
Nice pick ups Mazzy. Really enjoyed your London videos. Thanks for sharing your trip.
Watched all the London vids and as always, love the travelogue. Hoping to get back there myself. Happy 70th! And how funny and amazing he just pulled that UK mono toploader out from the back lol
Welcome home. Enjoying your trip recap.
Great picks , love The Fairport Convention.
Hey Mazzy. Thanks for sharing your birthday adventure, I’m also 8/23… though I had a California adventure. I think a mono top loader White album is the Grail for a lot of us. Congratulations. Keep up the good vibes.
Great Gifts Mazzy! Glad you had fun! Trish
The Matthew Halsall record is an interesting one. He's a musician on the Manchester Jazz scene who set up his own independant record label, Gondwana Records, initially releasing his own albums before building up a roster of artists all worthy of further exploration. The Portico Quartet, Hania Rani, Mammal Hands and my own favourites the early albums of Go Go Penguin before they moved to Blue Note, this to name but a few. Also note your love of the Smiths, one of your favourite Manchester bands along with Joy Division, have you heard Elbow, from the north side of Manchester?, all their albums are superb with "The Seldom Seen Kid" an all time classic. There's a BBC recording at Abbey Road of Elbow playing the songs from this album with the BBC concert orchestra and choir, absolutely superb. Another of your favourites Richard Hawley appears as a guest on one of the songs in this broadcast "The Fix".
Nice video, love Fairport Convention, Liege & Lief is a brilliant late 60s folk British folk album, got a 1st UK press too. I was fortunate to have been able to take several trip for digging vinyl records across UK, beautiful country, there are still some good deals to be made, though one have to move away a bit from London IMHO
Wonderful haul, Mazzy! Leige & Leif...breathtaking, along with Solid Air. I live in Paris, and trips to London to scour the record shops are a joy of my life. Flashback records in Islington... killer shop!
Lovely selection of records, Mazzy! Anne Briggs, Fairport, Beatles monos, Richard Hawley. The Alexi Murdoch is absolutely fantastic. Listen to All My Days 4 times and it’ll be your favourite song of all time. He’s lucky the Nick Drake estate hasn’t sued him though. You were doing so well until you showed the Shadows 😂 You’ll need to come to Scotland next!
'Coles Corner' is a helluva album. Definitely worth seeking out. Can't believe the vinyl version is considered so valuable. It was easy to get for a year or two after being released.
Let me add that these get-togethers of vinyl lovers is wonderful to see. @MGKBoston's party in July, and now this. So nice that people made the effort to travel.
I recommend “This Nation’s Saving Grace” by The Fall
Great pickups 👍 the inspiral carpets are a great band, seen them twice in the nineties. Noel Gallagher was a roadie for them before oasis..
Hey Mazzy, I’m a little familiar with the Fall catalog, very interesting band to explore. I highly recommend these albums The Franz Experiment and Bend Sinister. Both have been reissued and sound fantastic. Wonderful and Frightening World of the Fall, is also an excellent album. The Fall have so much to check out but those albums I picked stand out. 👌
Richard Hawley is a fan of the 45rpm single and an occasional DJ. The man knows his music. Little Walter and Chess records/ garage rock/ Link Wray etc . He has recently compiled a wonderful double vinyl album for Ace records “ 28 little bangers from Richard Hawley’s Jukebox”. I can recommend this. Matthew Halsall has yet to release a poor record. Manchester Spiritual Jazz , one for Alice Coltrane fans. Chip Wickham flautist on Matthew’s albums has put out 4 excellent albums also. Next time you venture across the pond try Manchester. We have some great record shops. Mr Sifters is still trading. ( One for the Ossis fan ) and as for the Gallagher brothers reunion- I expect Alimony is not cheap . Hence the ticket prices.
Your London trip videos were very enjoyable and it’s taken a yank to show me what I’m missing , being just up the line by rail there’s no,excuse for me not to check out those record shops I knew of but , rather shamefully , have never visited. I also need a decent hat shop
Stay well Mazzy.
The Fall CD that you have there is the perfect primer to their output, love Inspiral Carpets too
Great video Mazzy, Richard Hawley is true talent there is a brilliant UA-cam video of him talking about his vinyl collecting you must check it out 👍
Just to tie things together. Noel Gallagher started out auditioning to be vocalist for the Inspiral Carpets, he failed that audition but went on to be a roadie for them, and credits that period for teaching him about the music business.
My current favourite Fall album is "I Am Kurious Orange". The record shop near where I live called Action Records in Preston had them signed on the shop record label for a few years and the owner has some amazing stories about Mark E Smith. The Inspiral Carpets were the band that Noel Gallagher was a roady for a few years before Oasis formed. I saw them a few times at the local student nightclub, they were really good live. Don't remember whether Noel was one of their roadies, I'd have got his autograph instead of the bands autographs if I'd been psychic lol. Happy Birthday for the 24th Mazzy, also Mr Butterworth ( That would be me) turned 50 on 26th August. I bought myself a nice Gibson SG to take the edge off. It's very lovely. All the best Mazzy.
The Fall was great. That collection you were given is quite good but for real LPs try one called Hex Enduction Hour. It is pricey but great, There is also one fab one called This Nation's Saving Grace and Bend Sinister. Also, try one of their earliest. Grotesqye. Nice videos from London.
All the albums from the 70s and 80s from the fall are great. Try the ones that @Radahr-5 mentioned first.
Hex Enduction Hour is the culmination of the Fall’s early years. Super arty, Krauty, pummeling. As Rock critics used to say: “rewards repeated listening.” But the Fall had several other distinct periods, with Mark the only constant. There was even a “California” lineup of the Fall that was actually really good.
A belated welcome to London - had I known you were here! Loving the videos Norman - take care and be well
I love finding an artist / band only to discover they have a huge back catalogue - no waiting for another release. You’re going to have a great time with The Fall, my friend. I’m not going to recommend albums, the pleasure will be in the discovery. Enjoy!
Got my opening night tickets for Cardiff - can’t wait - it’s gone mad in the U.K. this week 🎉 good to see the brits did us proud on the 🍺 stakes - nice finds too ❤
Mazzy, seek Richard Hawley's 2001 album, Late Night Final. The 2023 vinyl reissue/repress is still affordable, hovering $45-ish on the bay. Best to listen to this record, you guessed it, at late night.
Some really thoughtful and great VCLT from all the guys there.
Loved the videos. Cheers mazzy 👍
The Bert Jansch Sampler reads on the sticker (I think) Folk Comp (Compilation) Good (quality of the vinyl) £4 ....Reckless records - one of my favorites in London (always affordable prices and good choices )...
The infotainment scan is a good Fall album
THE FALL !!! Now were talking Mazzy ! ( I highly reccomend anything THE FALL 1976-1985 and also their later years !) Peace
Hi Mazzy thanks for all the London videos, really enjoyed them. You forgot to show your new Fairport album on the pink island label! The street in Soho with the record shops (from the Oasis album cover) is Berwick Street. Oh, and a ‘crosswalk’ is called a zebra crossing round these parts! Hope you enjoy your new haul of records. My original Sgt Pepper mono is the best sounding record I own so have fun with yours! Greetings from London
The Pink Island Fairport was shown in this video ✌🏼🇬🇧
While we're in full "Wanker" mode with Morrissey, I was reminded of an interview I heard on a Manchester Radio Station which gave me a laugh at the time. Noel Gallagher was being interviewed and recounted a tale of bumping into Keith Richards in a bar somewhere. Noel said Keef asked him "Who's the bigger "Wanker", your singer or mine?", Noel thought for a bit and replied "Well seeing as how your singer wrote the lyrics for some of the greatest songs of all time, I guess it would have to be mine". Noel didn't say how Keef responded to this.
Noel Gallagher was a roadie for Inspiral Carpets back in the day before Oasis.. Seems that Richard Thompson wrote his wonderful song Beeswing about Anne Briggs..
I like the Fall's Beggers Banquet period. It's their most accessible and has the 'hits'.
Love your Phonica T-shirt
As legendary DJ and Fall aficienado John Peel said "People write to me and say, I heard The Fall, which record should I get?' And I never have any hesitation in telling them: you must get them all, because it's impossible to pick one… and in fact I’ll go further. I say: anybody who can tell you the five best Fall LPs, or the five best Fall tracks, has missed the point, really."
Sounds like you had a fantastic trip to London, and what a haul of records; Sgt Pepper and the White Album in mono, Richard Hawley, Fairport Convention and Anne Briggs, all great stuff and loads more besides. I'm coming over to New York on Oct 5th to see the sights, and celebrate what would've been Johns 84th birthday at Strawberry Field in Central Park and do some record shopping before I come home. Been a lifelong ambition to come to New York after seeing it in so many movies and in so many songs. So glad you got to do so much while you were here in the UK. I have been inside Studio 2 at Abbey Road, back in the early eighties. The studio was being refurbished and a new recording console and mixing desk was being installed, a lot of the old equipment was bought by Paul McCartney and Mike Oldfield. I think it was Oldfield who bought the Leslie speaker that john's vocal was recorded through on Tomorrow Never Knows. It is an awesome place to be in, so much history and so many classic songs and not just by The Beatles that were recorded there. I must look out for that Abbey Rd book that you were given, also there is a fascinating book by David Hepworth on the history of Abbey Road Studios with a foreword by none other than Paul McCartney, well worth getting.
Mazzy, figured I'd drop the latest British Fab 4 Wednesday night news here & tease you 😉 you herein your steadfast Beatles vinyl reissue statement that you WON'T be picking up any new Beatles vinyl reissues, special or not, bc you've got enough?
You've one of the biggest Fab Four fans & collectors I know. Ok Bud, what's your play??😊
Alexi Murdoch is squarely in the Brit-folk tradition. Even the fact that he’s Scottish is in line with Martyn, Jansch, Donovan, and Gerry Rafferty. I really like that cover of the Anne Briggs record. It’s back when designers did a lot with one or two colors. Note that the Fall can quickly become another Grateful Dead in terms of collecting if they click for you. As John Peel said of his favorite Punk band, they are “always the same, always different.”
II’m listening to The Shadows Greatest Hits right now. It’s excellent! I just finished side 1.
Richard Hawley has got beautiful records and an amazing voice. The only time I had the chance to see him live (one of the best sounding concerts I've attended) was in 2008, at a theatre, in Santa Maria da Feira (Portugal). "Coles Corner" is my personal choice. The Fall and Mark E. Smith were very influential and important in all the UK indepent scene. They have a huge discography and many important records - A true classic is "The Wonderful And Frightening World Of...", from 1984.
Love the older Billy Bragg stuff. The first 4-5 albums. We had him on Go Beat! / Polydor pressings in Canada. Brewing up with Billy Bragg or Back to Basics comp are my faves by him. Taxman and Workers Playtime are excellent too. The Fall are essential. I would go with the A Sides comp LP. Looks like an epic meet up! Would love to meet Harris, Rob and John some time. Seems like great guys. Cheers
Great to see a mention of The Fall ! I don't dare recommend an album although you might enjoy the Brix Smith-era ones (1983-89). Actually, I would recommend one - The Peel Sessions box - it's virtually a 'Greatest Hits'.
It's great to see your records. 😊
Hi Mazzy, thank you so much for all your posts. By the way, Jordan is from New Zealand
Anne Briggs’ 1971 Lp on CBS titled The Time Has Come is my favorite by her. Perfect for late night listening. Originals are very expensive, but a reissue is currently in print.
Loved watching your London series. You do these videos so well.
Oasis… i just never got into this band.
Glad you had a good visit to the Olde County Mazzy. You mentioned missing out on Chiswick this time round. Richmond and Twickenham are two other West London boroughs worth exploring next time. They are full of locations connected to the likes of The Fabs, the Rolling Stones, Pete Townshend, Mick Jagger, Mick Avory and Rod Stewart. Let me be your guide. A splendid time is guaranteed for all.
I’ve been to Twickenham before 🇬🇧
The Fall top three , Hex Enduction Hour 82 , Live At The Witch Trials 79 , This Nations Saving Grace 85
Fun videos love the tour of record stores
The Fall. Get these: Dragnet, Hex enduction hour, I am kurios Oranje, The frenz experiment ( includes kinks cover of victoria) and 12" Mr Pharmacist.
Awesome London series Mazzy. I knew it would be good when you said you were coming over the pond.
Also, Noel Gallagher hates the compressed sound of what's the story. It may well get remastered for the 30th anniversary.
Well done on finding your grails, I'm never that lucky in London. Please make a video once you have listened...
Looks like you had a great time across the pond. That top loader White album is a grail of mine too. Maybe someday.
The Fall. You don't know what you missed. Manchester's greatest band. Mark E Smith, legend.
As for Richard Hawley, yip Coles Corner is his finest work, try Lowedges and Late Night Final for size too (and yes, a track of his cropped up in your Gig Harbour video .. a pleasant surprise at the time and an indication the chap at Gig Harbour Audio knows his onions).
First time I've ever seen Anne Briggs mentioned, nice one!
Loved the London series! I saw Michelle Shocked open for Billy Bragg in Minneapolis in '88. Huge BB fan, don't know William Bloke, will check it out. Cheers Mazzy, greatness as always
Fall recommendations - “Classic” period: Hip Priest and Kamerads (great singles/live comp); Newer period: Heads Roll
Cole's Corner has been on my wantlist for ages. I suggest you pick up a CD in the meantime. Quite excellent!
There are different Fall eras, so hard to know what to suggest. The Beggars era with Brix may be most accessible and poppy, like This Nation’s Saving Grace, The Wonderful and Frightening World Of… and Bend Sinister. But my favorites are Live At The Witch Trials, Slates, Grotesque and especially Hex Enduction Hour. There are gems in the 90s too but more hit or miss. Others will weigh in with different opinions I’m sure,
Good morning from France Mazzy,
Actually Ivy was a band from New York, a trio formed with Andy Chase and Adam Schlesinger, co leader of the marvellous Fountains of Wayne.
The third member and singer is Dominique Durand, a young french woman who came to live in New York.
Different band. When they toured the US they had to call themselves Ivy UK
@@mazzysmusic Ooops, sorry !
Anne Briggs. The lodestar. You are a lucky man. Cheers.
10” Ep ‘Slates’ from the Fall is a really good.
Hi Mazzy. You might enjoy The Durutti Column...another fine Manchester band. Vini Reilly, the guitarist, is wonderful. Enjoyed the London videos...Gor Blimey!
Got them on CD ✌🏼
The Texas Campfire Tapes was often mentioned in HiFi mags of the time as a demo disc - I had the CD but picked it up on vinyl last year. Of the same era was The Trinity Sessions and The Blue Nile.
50,000 Fall Fans is a great introduction to The Fall. Different folk like different phases, mine is the stuff I heard when I first got into The Fall in the mid-late 80s. So I vote Bend Sinister, The Frenz Experiment, I Am Kurious Oranj and their early 90s foray into electronica (kinda) with Extricate, Code: Selfish and The Infotainment Scan...
Good evening, I have the greatest contempt for those who sell more expensive tickets. Complain that nothing is going well and participate in that... great video 😀
My niece spent all day today trying to get Oasis tickets and failed. I’m sick of hearing about them, they even made the radio headlines today!
Enjoyed seeing your reactions to meeting some of the British VC’ers. Yes, most of us Limeys can drink a lot of pints. I guess we start early, going to the pub as teenagers...
The Fall actually did a cover of A Day in the Life. Worth a listen. Mark Smith preferred McCartney over Lennon who he described as “too arrogant” Coming from Smith that is truly damning 😂
The best I could say about this Beatles derivative band when they first came out was that they were ok. I guess it is an indictment of today’s music that their reunion is making such big news.
Oasis getting back together. I think I might be more excited about the Bay City Rollers getting back together. But seriously I never understood why Oasis obtained this exulted claim to fame. Average pop music at best.
Every band at its time.
Catchy tunes, strident anthemic sound, a rockstar singer
Boring British pop
Oasis and Inspiral Carpets were both from Manchester as well. The Carpets were on Mute Records over here I'm sure you remember Mute. Logo was the cow with shades and a ciggie with ''cool as fuck'' written underneath. Distributed by Elektra
Watched haris piltons post today said you nursed a beer in one of the english pubs for awhile makeing light of course. 😮
An interesting fact about Richard Hawley (who is from Sheffield, England) is that Joe Cocker was his god father.
Definitely Maybe was the original and the best
Before Liam got singing lessons and Noel started vocals 😀
The Fall and Inspiral Carpets are great. Enjoy!
Hi Mazzy, I’ve really been enjoying your London Trip videos. Question about the Studio One Rockers record that you brought home: Might it be a green vinyl reissue pressing from 2020 or possibly a black vinyl reissue pressing from 2022 (both on Soul Jazz Records)?
Thank you + welcome home!
NEVER liked oasis. So glad you loved your trip to London, enjoy your new records.
Luv the show.
The Fall and Inspiral Carpets great bands! Hmm Oasis I have the albums never understand the sheer reaction and hysterical things going on with them touring here at the moment! But concerts being repeated! Albums re issued tickets selling out! Odd but at least a rock band back in focus! Here in the UK!
Mazzy, you’re going to love that mono Pepper’s. It sounds SO good.
*I crack up 😅 every time you call Sgt. Pepper, "pepper". Oasis...yawn. Grab "Dragnet" or "Grotesque" by the Fall. Weird you know nothing about them.*
the effects he used was the " echoplex "
I’ll take that Alexi Murdoch album off your hands. He used to play all around LA in coffee shops around 2001 and 2002 and I worked on the music video for the song orange sky, he’s great.
Both Alexi Murdoch albums are still available from Hello Merch. They’re both great. I wish I’d seen him play live. I hope he was good to work with.
Cheers - D
Glad you had a great trip to the UK🌟I wouldn’t touch an Oasis album though, even with a ten foot pole…😬
Richard Hawley wow what voice reminds me of Leonard Cohen a bit
Not only is Mazzy the 🐐 of the vinyl community, but he also has a way of large number of groupies! 😂😂😂😂😂 😯 😯 😯 😯 😯
