I must have missed your vid about trip planning? How long will you be in Japan? What cities/areas will you be visiting? Have you got any special/bucket list activities/places planned? What sort of accommodation will you be staying in and how did you book it? Enquiring minds need to know this important information! 🤓
I was there 1 year and only got it like 3 or 4 times lmao I was confused as I expected a lot of them Though I was living in hachioji not in the main station. No one was speaking english there
I can't believe he finally did it. It's hilarious that you basically have the same idea as me in building a SFF PC before going to Japan because the market prices there are so wack. Anyways, good video and I hope you enjoy Japan as much as I did. Been a long time coming.
I am tripping right now. 10 minutes ago I was asking myself the same question (Could I fly to Japan with my Desktop computer), and I have have a very similar config. You uploaded your video 1 HOUR AGO
In your last video, you said you're going to visit Japan in the future... this is was way sooner than I expected 😂 so excited for you!! and hope your first flight went well ❤
1:49 Correction: Framework laptops have USB4, which is the open (not Intel-exclusive) version of Thunderbolt 4. It has the same features & capabilities as Thunderbolt.
I ended up being too afraid to take my desktop in a checked bag. Although...we had way too much stuff we needed to take with us to justify throwing in the desktop. Ended having it mailed to our new address and made sure there was a lot of padding in the box. Luckily, everything was in tact. Glad that yours was as well! Enjoy your time here, man!
I binge watched your renovation series the other day, loved it, Thought I was just gonna spend my time on one video last weekend but did the whole series haha. I wanted to share a title suggestion for this video, you don't have to listen to this, thought I just wanted to share because I like coming up with titles lol : "My First flight to Japan didn't go as expected"
I just watched your excellent video "ultimate guide to sentence mining". Thank you for explaining the steps and explaining the tools. I would never have figured out the process using ShareX and texthooker etc. without your instruction. I have some local files (I liked your non-piratical subliminal messaging) that I thought I'd try to mine. I don't have migaku so I"m using my own note type with about six fields I need to populate in Anki. I don't use yomichan but I'm using ten-ten which is similar I guess but I've never used yomichan. Ten-ten isn't integrated to anything so perhaps there's more manual cutting and pasting? Anyway, my question is: did you ever calculate what your average note creation time was making your pre-Migaku 4000 notes back in the day? I suppose I'll get better at the process as I make more notes, but so far I've created about 30 cards and it's taken me 2 hours, so that's about 4 minutes per card. Maybe I could shave that down to 2 minutes as I develop a creation flow, but...at this point it's very labour intensive and time-consuming. On the positive side, this exercise so far has shown me how much content was going over my head not pre-studying the vocab in the program I'm watching. Without preparation, the Japanese subs just fly by when the dialogue is fast. So the cards I'm making are invaluable for comprehension. The trade-off is that making them is time-consuming. Nevertheless, I agree with you that my custom-made cards are far superior to subs2srs batch creation cards. Btw, I posted this comment here on what is currently your latest video because I wasn't sure if you'd notice it if I commented on the sentence-mining video in question. 🙂
It definitely took longer than more integrated mining, but I think one card took me 30 seconds to 2.5 minutes at most if I was having trouble with typos or manually syncing audio on Netflix something. On my second channel, I have this old video where you can sorta see how long it took when I was still manually mining: ua-cam.com/video/SaVHrzF3-2E/v-deo.html
先生、どうもありがとうございました@@Livakivi Thank you so much for your quick response to my question -- YT didn't give me any notification! Anyway, I will check out the video you kindly referenced. 30 seconds is an optimal target to shoot for, but I think 2 minutes is probably a more achievable considering my poor talents. My objective is to sentence mine an entire TV series of about 320 minutes of screen time, (14 episodes of about 23 minutes). How many notes I create depends on how many words I don't know. Which will be a lot. I only know textbook vocab so I'll have to create a lot of notes to capture all the casual language/slang that real Japanese people speak. In only the first 15 minutes of the show it's already been a lot! Oh boy. I greatly appreciate your experience on all this. 🙏
When I travelled I just took the parts out of the case, psu and cooler in checked luggage and everything else in my carry-on. Then I just bought a new case when I arrived lol
Thanks for sharing! I have also considered traveling with a desktop computer with high-end parts and my main concern was taxing. I'm not a frequent traveler but it seems like most countries require that any item exceeding certain values need to be declared and taxed. So what you did might be considered "smuggling", you just weren't inspected or caught and the authorities usually don't care, unless it's inappropriately large amount or value, like you obviously want to sell and profit from them. And if you didn't carry them with you and had shipped them instead, you most certainly would need to declare it and pay taxes in order to retrieve them from customs.
4:07 hell yeah linux content, love it, daily drove it for quite a while, but dropped when I built my first ever PC back in december last year, bcs my Wifi adapter doesn't have a linux driver hehe. Honestly been thinking about buying a new adapter that works with it and come back to the penguin once again, maybe this future linux video helps me to make a decision. Love your content dude, I would help with the patreon and stuff if I wasn't a kinda poor brazilian XD.
Thanks for sharing. Have a very similar story, went from considering a laptop to building NR200 with 4090 and a portable 15.6 4K OLED monitor. I haven't traveled with it yet but planned to split 4090 and PC between two carry-on luggage (will have two tickets). Definitely will not put it in checked baggage, I'm not that brave.
Moved to Tokyo over 6 months ago downsized my PC into a formd T1 7950x3d and 4090. Well as you imagined life becomes very busy and I rarely touch the PC anymore. At least it was one last project to do before leaving.
I actually haven't used the PC myself yet either, I'm just using my MacBook. I just need it for a few video projects I want to get done this year, so I brought it lol.
Well hope you enjoy it here mate. Would like to say it's been fun so far but for me it's been more stress and anxiety then anything hopefully you got someone looking out for you here.@@Livakivi
@@ji-26 I understand that, I'm definitely not 100% settled in myself either yet considering how big of a environment change it was, including in terms of living conditions lol
You could've actually done all the customs declaration and paperwork they gave you beforehand, online at Visit Japan Web. They give you 2 QR codes and you then just show the one they ask for at each station. Also I traveled from Germany to Japan with my full size desktop and did it similarly to you (taking out gpu, plus stuffing the inside with towels so nothing moves). It really just barely fit the biggest luggage I had, and arrived with no issues.
Migaku has been updated to version 2, does your reference link still work with the new version? Because I'm thinking of purchasing the annual standard subscription
Your videos are extremely relatable. Very satisfying to watch, a lot because I have very similar in the same situations. It looks like you are going to daily drive Linux again because your macOS experience gave you a different appreciation of workflow, and with your new knowledge of customization you might be able to get workflow better than you have ever had before. Is this correct?
it's extremely odd seeing a youtuber you occasionally watch explain in detail how they have the same laptop and sff case pc, for the exact same video editing reasons, going through exactly what you did flying except in my case i moved from the US to Finland (前は日本に住んでいるけど)
Water-cooled 4090 in lianli q58 is carry-on able. Ek server waterblock and their sff CPU block with a 280 rad makes it possible. Did Perth to Vancouver no problems.
I think there's an app that lets you do the customs declaration in a much simpler way. I was sketched out by that form as well, but saw an ad for the app somewhere in the customs line at NRT and just did that instead.
What's your plan for a monitor? Are you just thinking of purchasing one there then sell it at an electronics shop before returning? Glad you made it safe though and hope your trip is good! I imagine if you're taking a full PC you'll be there for some time so I look forward to all content to come!
Great video, helped me decide whether to buy a laptop or desktop. Also where did you buy the RTX 4090? I'm in Europe and I'm looking to buy all of those parts any recommendations? I'm in Serbia btw
Hey, thank you very much for the support! I bought mine from local second hand websites directly from the owners, but currently even those don't have any lol. Good luck finding the new parts!
Maybe I don't fly international enough - Do they actually weigh your carry-on? I just carried my duffel bag on my shoulder and no one bothered me. I thought the weight limits were there so if the flight attendants have to move the bag around they're able to in the overhead compartments.
Ive also flewn from Europe to Korea nonstop to stay for a month couple times with my node 202 5800x 1080gtx built pc. Just stuffed it in the luggage as is. Case is good for that and theres not much wiggle space for the graphics card.
You're a chad for not purchasing the Lenovo laptop, I bought one in Jan 2021 and it died in June 2023, whereas I have an older Compaq Laptop from 2002 that still works.
Cool video, but honestly I would not put anything valuable in checked luggage. The golden rule is never put valuables in checked luggage; It's so easy for airlines/handlers to misplace or even steal from your luggage and dealing with them is just a big hassle. I would opt for carrying on my sff pc with me on any flight I bring it.
Im trying to take a mini itx pc on a plane, do you think I would be allowed to take it inside my backpack or would i get stopped at security, im not planning to include any water cooled parts so im assuming its just the same as a laptop right?
I have this same exact case, how in the actual world did you manage to fit a 4090 in there? My 3080ti barely fits, is the 4090 perhaps not as huge as I've been told by the internet? 🤔

Glad it wasnt a bad experience for your first time :D Also, as a random tidbit, if for whatever reason it ever came to be a decision to make, never fly with Iberia. I'm really curious what made you bother to bring the pc if the Macbook was decent for editing anyway, I get wanting it for your home but why bother with all that for a trip?
Certain projects that can only be done on an x86 PC, wanted better editing already before going to Japan and wanted to see how good a maxed out desktop is, and didn't really want to go for a windows notebook just in case the performance isn't good enough or the overall experience such as fan noise and build quality for the price aren't satisfactory.

@@miser2570 Ya, total, yo también he oído a gente decir que han tenido un vuelo de mierda, pero luego cuando la comparas a otras compañías de otros países y tal no está mal, que es lo que decía. I wonder if you would've got trouble if they saw you had a CMOS battery in the motherboard lol
Was fine, I think small batteries such as that one are allowed or something.
This is exactly why I'm switching to an SFFPC.
Finally there is a reason for visiting japan
Good luck in Japan!

@@Livakivi based, we can't lose awesome people like you :D
I'm really curious what made you bother to bring the pc if the Macbook was decent for editing anyway, I get wanting it for your home but why bother with all that for a trip?
Certain projects that can only be done on an x86 PC, wanted better editing already before going to Japan and wanted to see how good a maxed out desktop is, and didn't really want to go for a windows notebook just in case the performance isn't good enough or the overall experience such as fan noise and build quality for the price aren't satisfactory.
How are you finding Japan so far? Exceeded expectations?
I'll keep those thoughts for future videos :)
Wouldn't a bios battery count as a battery?
I think its small enough to be fine
Waiting for collab with Mudan. :p
i'd be terrified to trust checked baggage to not get lost or stolen
why'd you get two 4090s? incase one of them died?
What are you planning on doing in 日本?
4:55 - removing GPU from case during travel is reallly smart - rtx4090 is too heavy with air cooler pcb can crack and during travelin inside case
