I love how you wrapped this up with a quote from Lewis. As a combat veteran, student of history, and currently a farmer, I feel I can relate closely to Cincinnatus. Thank you for making this video
Currently reading a biography on Washington and discovered this man. Humility is a virtue seemingly absent from modern society. Great men and women like this ought to be lifted up for the world to marvel
I wouldn't say it's entirely accurate to say Cinncinatus answered the call without hesitation. He had to be begged to return the second time - something he initially didn't want to do if it meant missing his cabbage harvest.
I learned about Cincinnatus when I was in elementary school and for some reason his story always stuck with me (even after I forgot his name and many of the details) now I realize that I remember him not just because of his own greatness but due to the similarities between him and Washington
Humility: it opens the floodgates of all the other virtues, it took more power to let go than hold on, Cincinatus knew that true value layin peace than war.
Caesar spent his entire life trying to set himself up to be the supreme dictator of Rome and in his pathetic, trifling way he got what he wanted and was brutally murdered by everyone he had stepped over to get it. Cincinnatus had absolute dictatorial rule handed to him, and he just gave it back when he was done. I have a hard time imagining what Caesar would have said had he bore witness, or if he even had the self reflection necessary to understand that ultimate irony that someone was handed and gave up that which he coveted most, and that only of the two of them could say they were truly respected by those around them
I think Cincinnatus was a man of faith with the ability to disassociate his value from his humanity. He should have been made a king. Thankfully, he chose to be a servant. Leaders have felt the highest honor one could be is just an ordinary citizen.
Lee Kwan Yew who was the great arcitech of modern Singapore built up that city state to the Asian powerhouse it is toiday can never be compared to Cincinaticus because despite the wonderful things he did for Singapore he never gave up power and he made a title for himself: "minister mentor"
You missed part of the story where later his Son was being trialed for military incompetence (failed to setup picket when camping with troops) and he was guilty, yet his lawyer simply asked, "Who will go tell his father ?" and the aqcuitted him, for non could bare themselves to tell him his son was to be executed.
The Emperor/Great King should only be used for emergencies. Find a worthy and virtuous man. Then, the Emperor/Great King will resign and return power to the Senate and General Assembly or demoted to Consul. Cincinnatus was so cool! 🤩
What caused that? Its not power its a trick The others thought him weak too simple to notice They sound like kids fighting They tried to use Jesus the story is a tale to entertain tourists
It's really not that hard to hand over power, if anything It's more of a tale of a man who valued home and family far more than the annoyances of politics. There is no greater life well lived than going off to stop the dumb from screwing up the good life you are already living.
Being born in Fort Thomas our family's history and our in the greater Cincinnati we all seem to learn about our history and where our community come from on the genealogical site for the landware family it explains how we got our farm in Strasburg it's interesting that these people from the old country knew their history or could relate to their Roman history to America's benefit for Washington in times like this stories about the Noble Romans could be beneficial like Machiavelli's discourses of liviy interesting abbreviation going under the Yoke was like running the gauntlet
We literally just watched a propaganda piece about a mythological dictator so this guy could tell us to be die for American wars in the name of Jesus Christ.
@@animeguardianxx I bet it was a North American who did that comparison, right? 😅 My dear Anime fan, he was a politician from the 18th Century. He was no hero. He was wealthy, a hypocrite towards his religion, a slaver, and had all defects a rich powerful dude from centuries ago could have. Only North Americans, with their toxic patriotism like this man and keep trying to force this "great man" image.
What? "Nobody reads the Bible more than me" Trump, is the opposite of humility, you'd have to be a complete fool to not see that at this point. Comparing your idol to people like this and Abe Lincoln (etc.) is an insult to good people.
@@Fergusbaddog Please share the link where President Trump said, "Nobody reads the Bible more than me." If you cannot do that, then, that makes you the liar, doesn’t it? Therefore, everything you said after that point is suspect at best. You are the one who needs a dose of humility.
@@charlesberton2581 I watched him say it (back in like 2016) I remember joking that he was going to get struck by lightning for it. He also said "nobody loves the Bible more than me". There is a huge montage of all the things Trump says he's the best at, the fact that you can't see how incredibly immature, foolish and arrogant he is by now tells me you have very poor standards and judgement. His religious hypocrisy is far worse than the egregious sin coming from the left: a plank compared to a speck. @@charlesberton2581 , President Trump has asked for the constitution to be suspended, more than once suggested he should have a third term, said he wanted to be a dictator on day one, faked bone spurs when his country called upon him, proudly proclaimed to be smart for not paying taxes, and many more other things I could mention about him but this text would be too long. Summarizing, Trump is the antithesis of honorable and selfless duty and I can't see how anyone smart would see it any other way.
As a local Cincinnatian, I carry this story with some pride. Great job on the storytelling! The most eternal leadership is humble.
I try not to take pride in other's deeds but I am not perfect.
Also whilst it sounds like some sort of wisdom, the most “eternal” leadership of Rome was Caesar. Humble, that man was not.
I’m sure the big red machine from the 70s agrees with u
Pride for something you have nothing about to do?
I would love to see this story as a movie…
Gladiator is somehow based on his story.

How can we produce more Cincinnatus in the present era?
Can you run for President please?
Well done! A nice brief history of a famous example of true leadership and virtue.
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it!
Power doesn't corrupt, it reveals. Or so I heard.
Power reveals a man's true character. So does pressure.

Thank you for the terrific history lesson and spiritual message. God Bless you
One of history’s greatest men.

Give young people a chance to find themselves

Good stuff👍
Also San Martin was offered to stay as Protector of Peru, but after ordering the country he left.
You left out his son and your Washington add-on was incredibly underdone

I 1st learned about Gen. Cincinnatus years ago on a kids cartoon. An education is an education no matter how you get it.
nice
bro i have a summative tmrw and without this i would fail istggg
Our Prime Minister just teased the UK with mentioning his name in his resignation speech.

And then there's Octavian

My favorite historical figure. Make my ship in Star Trek online after the great Cincinnatus
This retirement, return to duty, retirement again and return to duty...reminds me of Tom Brady

Is Cincinnati Ohio names after this nobel?
Indirectly.
Yes. George Washington loves his story so much that he named that place.

Washington was compared to Cincinnatus even during his own lifetime, with Cincinnati being founded as one of the earliest cities. So, yeah…..accurate
