Traynor is still in business. Their stuff is built like tanks. The owner Pete would literally throw heads off of two-story buildings to test them for durability. Also their cabs are fantastic
Dude your videos keep leveling up. Such good info and no one can compete with that amp collection, dayum.
Appreciate you, my man. Thanks for the support on every video!!
Got a traynor yba-1 for $650, a couple months ago. Pretty easy to find one with plexi/master volume mod, and can do some awesome high gain marshall tones (W/boost/OD). My biggest reason: hardwired/repairable/built like a tank. Versatile.
You nailed it. They are easy to hot rod and have great bones. There is a video of Pete Traynor throwing one of his amps off the roof and firing it up.
I dig both my Splawn amps. QR and the Nitro.
The QR is an amazing machine.
Splawn! Doing that Marshall thing better than Marshall
Agreeeeeeed
The Traynor TS-50b is a great bass amp. There’s something about the overdrive on it that gives it a good grinding sound. The bassist of Shellac used it a lot if you want to hear it in action.
There’s also a pedal called the Tronographic Rusty Box that’s basically the TS-50b in a box
The Splawn kt88 Nitro is one of the best sounding amps I've ever heard. Saw the demo FastRedPonyCar did on his channel and decided I couldn't live without one.
Dude I really love how in almost every video of yours I discover new gear to dive in. This week's splawn, those Canadian amps, the solid state Randalls... Now I want to try even more amp heads 😂
He sold me on a Splawn
What would be the splawn for Early Grindcore? Thrash?
Took me a LONG time to understand my Splawn amps but once i realized 1) the harder/better you play the more the amp will reward your sound and 2) they don't have the fizzy white noise that alot of other amps have and can be weird at first until your ear gets used to it. My ProMod is often as good or better than ALOT of higher end/custom built/modded cork sniff amps
Agreed
@@belligerentamateur and I agree with Kyle that big headroom is key to a great sound which is why the ProMod soars! Big bottle 6550s which i believe is the only difference between a ProMod and QR
Recently tried out a Traynor Guitar Mate from the 60's-70's, and suffice it to say. It sounded rad. Plugged in a Les Paul SL and it was Clapton/Bonnamassa city. Obviously not the Thrash Metal chugs that you and I both love. Still a great and inspiring tone. To get that Clapton/Bonamassa tone I had to crank the hell out of it.
As far as Traynor guess, I have played a few of them. The stock speakers in the combos and cabs are pretty flubby, so switching to something like a vintage 30 is pretty common. As far as heads go, the YBA-1, it's kind of a mutant bassman meets JTM feel - and considering the similar topology between those, I guess that makes sense. It's pretty cool for bass, and with a little eq and boosting, it can touch some nice high gain territory. I agree that it's not for everyone, and it's never going to be the tightest sound, but certainly usable with the right combination of gear. The YRM-1 is kind of similar, but if I remember correctly, it has a master volume, so it was easier to get a tighter chug without blowing through the power section's headroom.
Kyle, I was wondering if you could put a short list together of the amplifiers that your familiar with that meet your criteria for tone (tight bottom, aggressive upper mid, good palm mutes, excellent note articulation and clarity, overall amplifier openess/very little compression), and meet some of the purists criteria (all tube, no diode clipping in the gain/ drive/overdrive circuit, enough gain and saturation that no boost pedal is necessary)? I believe we'll find some of your favorite amps in this list, and I'm also interested in what else you come up with. Thank you for your important channel, your helping a lot of us older Thrash & Hardcore guys navigate the landscape, and narrow our search for applicable amplifiers. The amount to choose from today is enormous compared to the mid to late 80's.
Sounds like you were playing through a Custom Special 100, which is a fun amp. The cab that "went" with it had V30s IIRC. They come up pretty cheap on the used market, even here in Canada. 🇨🇦
Thanks for the response my dude 👊🏻 Have you ever tried replacing your tone control with a bass cut circuit on your guitar? Similar concept to a boost cutting bass at the input of the amp.
The Traynor YCS was the only high gain one that I can remember plugging into. Was pretty cool sounding from memory, but, didn't fit my budget or needs. Had a Randall RH200 that was brutal, they sell pretty cheap, older models can have an overheating issue. Always wanted to get my hands on a Yerasov Bulldozer
I've owned a Randall V2 and the v2 archetype which was the Christian Wolbers sig model. The V2 has a really fat thick tube lead channel. I was very saturated and wasn't fizzy at all but wasn't the tightest. The solid state rhythm channel was where those amps really shine. The solid state channel is extremely tight and punchy. No boost needed and is incredible for palm muted metal riffing. The way I generally used it was the solid state channel was my primary channel then I'd switch to the tube channel for big strummed chords like in the chorus of a song.
The Randall warhead I don't have first hand experience with but it is a totally solid state amp. There is also a Warhead x2 which sounds better in the reviews I've seen. Also solid state.
If you’re looking for Randall SS heads I think you should also consider the Quilter Overdrive 200 & 202 heads
The Randall Kirk Hammett signature amp! 🤘🏻
I’d love to see you demo some Randalls, especially the T2 and V2. I was crazy for a T2 as a teenager. As for Splawn, they just don’t appeal to me. Generally I feel like we have similar ears, but Splawns sound stringy to me. The way you describe the Butteslax is how I would describe a Splawn. Just not as good as most other modded Marshalls to me.
I have a Randall T2 Gus G model and it is a killer amp, I have a couple of Mesa Boogies and I still love my Randall T2 Gus G and I'd never sell it, I've had people make offer's but I'll never sell it.
I'd be interested to hear your opinion on them, keep up the good work 🤘
While they are not gig worthy (well you could use their XLR out to a PA) the Randall RG13 is pretty neat. A ~1w three channel pedal SS amp. Built in boost and effects loop. You don't see them for sale very often.
Excited to watch that live show!
Rad dude, I appreciate that!
I really regret selling my Randall T2 back in the day. Killer metal tones.
M'y first amp was a traynor
Traynor custom spécial a head
50wor 100w and a lot of knob
Three channel, and a lot of seeting i dont know Them !
I have a 2x12 warhead combo I havent touched in over a decade. I need to plug it in now
Killing it man
The Randall RH series amps are quite nice as well and don't seem to get much mention. I have an RH200SC that sounds amazing and produces some of the more tube-like tones I have heard from a solid state amp. It's loud as hell too. The best part is that you can get them for next to nothing. I paid just over $200 for the head and a Behringer 4x12 head in mint condition. Sold the cab for $100 because it was meh at best.
If you ever get the chance, you should try a Splawn Super Comp. I believe they are even more aggressive than the Nitro.
It would also be cool if you got a Rivera Knucklehead Tre on the channel.
Kyle are you considering making a video about the JVM410H?? That would be interesting!!
Will you do 2 amps into 2 cabinets with both voiced lines out feeding a 6000w PA please?
Love Splawn. Thanks for turning me on to them! Scott was great to deal with and i'm so in love with my QR 100. Keep up the great content and stay brutal mane!
Have you ever had a chance to play a schecter hellwin? I bought one brand new and the second one I own just kind of fell in my lap. The used one I bought was the all black and red tolex design. I really wish they would have continued production of those amps, but from what I understand they were too expensive to build. I could be wrong about that. If I am let me know, for my own curiosity. They both definitely sound different from each other. I prefer the marshall style one I bought brand new. Again just curious what you think about them?
What are some of your most sought after amps you are dying to find/try out? Are there any left? :D Keep up the great content!
FAQ’N question: What happened with the revised Peavey 6505 and 6505 II? Did Peavey delay them?
Looking for a reasonably priced and readily available 4x12 cabinet for speaker mixing and experimenting, any suggestions?
Hey Kyle, have you done a video of the Ampeg VH 140C yet?
Ive just had a Randall RH200 come up in my area for $200 (but its missing the main logo)... Still considering it just to have...
Have you used fender amps clean amps that use for plataform pedal amd get the hi gain from you pedals ? It would be great ti do a comparasion whit fender twin with pedals vs a higain amp lime diezel. I didnt see that in youtube
If you ever get the chance the Randall KH103 Kirk Hammet signature I heard was awesome and released only a couple years ago.
Not really into the Fortin based Randall tube amps, but you know I'll get it on the channel regardless!
Fluff's vid he posted today of his 5 favorite amps has a Traynor, its the last amp of the play through
Where is the live stream link? Can't find it in the comments....
Hi Kyle, Traynor Amps are still made in Canada and are sold exclusively I believe through Long&McQuade. A great national retailer here in Canada 🇨🇦. Cheers
Good to know!
Long & McQuade owns Yorkville Audio (PA / pro audio manufacturer), which in turn owns the Traynor brand. L&M is the exclusive distributor for all Yorkville products and the Canadian distributor for a few other major ones such as Gibson.
since L&M owns Traynor, brand new Traynor amps are usually only found at L&M and sometimes the occasional small music shop. I don't think Traynor has introduced a new amp model in the last 5 - 7 years. oddly, they don't really need to do so, since L&M supports its retail business with gear rentals and in-house financing.
for our American friends, maybe the best analogy is "Canadian Peavey" in terms of how Traynor is perceived. everything used to be made here and was known for its reliability and excellent value. the brand is in an odd place where they have a lot of affordable entry level gear with overseas components (circuit boards, reverb tanks, etc.) alongside higher end stuff. people try the beginner / budget gear and get a certain impression from that, and it isn't immediately clear if more expensive tiers of the product line are objectively better.
the older (70's / 80's ?) stuff is highly regarded, damn near bulletproof, and easy to repair. I presume some of that has to do with a similar approach to what Marshall did -- redesign or modify an existing circuit to taste, upgrade and tweak for better performance / reliability, and compete in your local market(s) based on price advantage.
came across a Traynor amp head that must've been from the 70's at a pawn shop on the weekend. it must have weighed 3 to 5x as much as a modern amp head. definitely fits with the legend of how they used to test the amps for roadworthiness... by throwing it off the second story and plugging it back in!
Traynor is still alive and well. An older YBA-1 with the "mod" gets you in the Plexi range I believe
Good to know!
Would like to see your opinions on a b52 at100, i got one for super cheap with the intention an amp for getting good cleans, but had a good gain channel, might be more your SKYLE, has been known to be a poor mans mesa, definite sleeper
Wild that you mention this, I bought an atx100 yesterday. Been trying to find the at100. I owned one a few years back, sounded great but shit the bed harder than a geriatric xompetetive eater
Wheres the link for the live set?
After the burial used those randall v2s at one point i believe
If you can ever get your hands on any ISP amps and speakers not the pedal or modeler. The actual amp/ speaker cab they are probably the best solid state amp I've ever played or heard.
The ISP Theta to be precise.
Hello from Ontario. I’ve got a Randall V2 in great condition if you are interested, maybe we can arrange something. My issues is the wattage and I really wish I got the matching cab. I would love a gear head to maybe give some insight how to handle it. It sounds pretty fuckin’ rad.
The traynor may have had old bad tubes or caps too. That or the wrong speakers for the amp. But most are like plexis. No very metal on their own.
IMHO I had the T2 and it was very dull and relatively mid gain. Good clean but besides that not great.
Would you ever do Tone nailing videos?
Either a Genre or a particular guitar player?
I would like to see you take some gear and get in the Ball park of certain bands or sounds
Bands like, Circle Jerks and Suicidal Tendencies
Or anything you like.
Could be fun!
Have you done any Ceriatone amp demos? They are like a modded plexi right out of the box at a really good price.
He has. I believe he did the Chupacabra
@@sho-nuffmadrigal6857 Oh OK that's a killer amp.👍
That's a lot of blowing up if you don't stereo your amp right 😬
Hermansson and Wizard now stole the buzz on modern Marshalls from Friedman
Not from what I can see. Friedman is still top dawg in hype and popularity but I know people are getting more hip to Wizard. I don't see anyone talking about hermanson outside of the small, super nerd circles
@@belligerentamateur it’s the price and the wait time . But once I got my Hermansson it changed the way I look at amps forever. I don’t know if it’s 5th gain stage or what but it opened my eyes about how builders can do the future .
What model is that Mesa above the Splawn in the background?
MKIII Purple Stripe!
Ooooooo! Have you done a demo of it yet? I'm new to the channel and haven't had time to search through all your videos yet.
I can't be the only one who found it odd that the EVH 112 is a 30W rating for a 50W head.
Get back to the Laney GH series, great modded Marshall tones
you def have skyle
Because one amp into two different sounding cabs is more better
Complementary algorithm comment.
Two reasons....cost and lacking tonal desire are the main reasons popularity is lacking.
Can't say I agree
@@belligerentamateur understood
Because they cost too much used and they're great amplifiers
🤘🏼🤘🏼
Oldies nuts🤣🤣🤣🤣
I said fuk yea!
Old Randall’s are a let down . Dime used a wizard on the albums with the Randall and that’s the part people enjoy .
