Hi Joanne, thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial on dealing with values and charcoal! I have just started painting with charcoal and you are right: it is so forgiving because you can highlight again areas by simply using the eraser. It‘s a wonderful medium! Have you ever tried painting portraits or animals with charcoal?
Thanks Karin 😊 Yes charcoal is a wonderful medium and perfect for any subject including animals, my favourite and portraits 🥰
Hello - new to your channel. I am curious - please excuse my ignorance - I am also new to watercolour - but it seems to be a lot of work for a preliminary "sketch". Maybe I am looking at creating Art the wrong way - I often think that if I am going to create a piece of Art it needs to be "sale" worthy...But I am starting to think that sketching and drawing will help improve the way I look at and create a piece of art. This video was extremely interesting. I have some willow charcoal & I think today I will give it a try and not think so much about it being a "sale" worthy piece of art. Thank you for giving me another perspective.
Improving your sketching ability is always a good idea even if you paint in a loose watercolour style. This charcoal study/plan is perfect for a more complex painting as it is something to refer back to while you are painting. I also think charcoal art is beautiful in its own right. Creating Monochromatic charcoal pencil or paint studies was and still is really helpful when understanding tonal values and of course composition.

This was so informational, Joanne! I’ve resisted using charcoal, partly because it’s messy but also because I wasn’t sure about the techniques. You’re one of my favorite watercolorists! I’ve been following you for years!
Glad it was helpful Donna! Yes it's a little messy but worth it 👌
Always a pleasure to watch you work!
Thank you Helene

Merci infiniment Joanne ! Je réalise à quel point les croquis préalables sont si importants pour obtenir une belle peinture dans le respect des valeurs, des ombres et des lumières.

I am so glad you were able to re-show this. I miss having the resource that was Art Tutor. I don't understand why they have all disappeared!
Sadly ArtTutor closed its doors during the pandemic they are definitely missed 😢
Joanne, you are really good.
This was fabulous! I can’t wait to try this method. I usually talk myself out of using charcoal - messy - but you took the intimidation right away from it!
That's great news Nan 😀
