Ive heard about you for probably 2 yrs now. I've been looking at learning to recone subs from scratch. And now I stumble across your videos. I'm subbing and gonna be going threw them all! Thanks for putting out this information
When I worked at ORION , 99% of woofers that were returned for "Warranty" were actually user error or Abuse. Very few were defect, I.E. inconsistent glue coverage or other employee oversight on assembly causing some sort of separation failure. But nearly all coil failure was caused by clipping amplifiers, and coil failure was the 99% that were returned.
Now you talked about a vented pole... any good reasons not to drill it out with a drill press while you have it apart? Of course you would tape up the gap to keep the metal shavings out of the motor and then install a faucet screen at the top of the pole to prevent debris from getting in?
I swear, every time a question pops up in my head.... I open you tube and the video manifests in the feed, w/o me typing and searching the issue. Me and my device are way to in tune. Thanks as always cuz 99.9% the time it's your video or it's not but I am then let to yours. 🤔😵💫🤨💯
If your using a coil that is .2mm longer on the winding can you set the coil up offset where it sets higher to make sure you don't bottom out? Thanks Pat.
It still depends on how tall the motor structure is and where the center is. Typically 2 mm is not going to make a difference but you still don't want to bias it if you don't have to
Make sure you measure in metric. (Millimeters) Also make sure that you use a digital caliper you can find one for about $10 on Amazon. ua-cam.com/video/u_jKBZdU460/v-deo.htmlsi=wx2s22OGzNuOu94N
Hi my name is Brian. I live in California and I will be building my first "soft part" or a sundown calls it drop in recone kit. I wanted to know how do I know where to center the coil on the top plate ? Half , or 1/4 of winding length
@@RobotUnderground no . This is a motor, ti basket, vented spacer ring, cone with mega roll surround, spider pack w/ tinsel leads attached,3" 8 layer fw coil ,plastic ring thing for under spider. I've ca glued the coil to the spider (shimmed) and upon sliding the cone over the former I'm seeing that it doesn't go all the way down to the spider, like on a store bought sub (Sundown dc ect.)
Does thicker wire mean more power handling? I’m rebuilding a shitty scar audio Sdr 18” it has a 2.5 inch coil and I’m trying to make it handle more power sense I have blown the shit out of it
What are you going to do when you get so busy that you step away or decide to become a bigger supplier of specialized subs and custom motors and baskets
@@RobotUnderground I built a jig out of 6" PVC pipe connector and some thumb screws to center it. I'll let you know how it goes when I get around to trying to put it back together.
Hey can you make a short video on the type x alpine the old and new version 10s or 12s how good are they..i really like them but dont know much abt them thanks appreciate👍thinking abt using
I put 600V into 5 8 ohm 3 inch woofers all in series. Worked out to 600V 40 ohm = 15 amps.... 9000 watts. The transformer I was using went up in smoke big time lol. The little chinese speakers impressed me and really lasted a long time for being only 20W with a little voice coil. Near offed myself with the HV though XD oops. I didn't get shocked or anything, but the voltage arc through the cement and made a circuit without anything attached to one end, just through the chassis through the dirty cement. Scary!!!
Does the top plate/washer affect the way the magnetic Flux is concentrated? If yes, could that lip be a win/win for higher Bl and also making it easier for the factory worker to center the basket? Or is it pointless? The dust ring around the lip makes me think it has no effect on centering the basket and it has another purpose
It just gives a larger sweet spot, not always more BL. Many designs like JL have great BL with a thin top plate. Yes it might be easier for the factory.. But that's why I've been appreciating the American Bass motors that are bolted. No shifts either. no performance difference between overhung and underhung either. overhung just allows for more abuse.
I need help finding a ac to dc converter for my home radio set u fr my 2 15 inch Memphis mojo and ima buy a 5000 whatt amp for ut what brand and kind should I get please me out
Our Devil's Jizz or just regular JB Weld. Make sure you prep both surfaces first and you have your non magnetic shim ready to go. Even apply in small amounts to both surfaces.
😆😆😆 I have been measuring this stupid L7 15 and was just about ready to send you a pic of that top plate asking and if I had to take that measurement of the plate into consideration. You read my mind and just answered everything I needed to know! I will send you a pic of it once I have it together now... Thanks Patrick!
The vents are around the spider on a piece of plastic that connects The spider to the frame and also on the plastic that is around the bottom half of the cone that connects to the voice coil so it kind of forces the air back and forth through the inside Gap of the voice coil and down under the voice coil and out the sides where the spider and Vents are located... I just don't know how efficient that method of cooling is. It seems like the velocity of the air flowing in such a tight spot would cool it decently but who knows I've seen a lot of burnt looking L7 coils...
I was refoaming my sub and I accidentally put it a little bit too far on one of the sides, you got any ideas on how to re-center without take this whole thing apart?
@@RobotUnderground alright I guess I'll just have to retry but it's not off that much but it's just enough to rub when I hit the lower notes like 35 and under
@@zachlatta1833 You're just pushing the sub a bit harder than it can take. I recommend upgrading the sub to something bigger and stronger. Let me know if I can help.

Hey robot I have a question/idea. You obviously know alot more than me about the mechanics of a woofer . But I also enjoy the hobby of rc cars.. got me thinking. The new brushless tech. Reversed the old way of motors. Putting the windings on the outside and mag in center.. I dunno exactly how it could work.. or if it be effective.. but seems like something new could be done to improve sub motors in this manner
I run into alot of people who want bass but dont wanna upgrade any electrical then run through subs or amps because of low voltage on the amp or clipping until the coils go turning theyre head units all the way to max and then say well is sounded ok I smelt them but just figured they were breaking in kills me ive found certain companys ESP kicker have a one and done dont ask type deal were they will give the customer the benifet of the dought swap on site which on the dealers end takes 7 or 8 months to get the merch returned and most times that same customer will be back before you get the first subs or amp or both lol sometimes yea its a pain in the ass or can be atleat

Didn't they try to do the same 10yr warranty thing that MTX did?

Hi can u tell me sir what material best for top plate and botton yoke plate?
Appreciated
Just mild steel is fine.
I have a sundown motor needing to be aligned how ca I send it to you for repair?
Just text me direct with your name and shipping address, 6023126504

If you have a drop in you don't need to measure. I should say if you have the proper recon kit you shouldn't have to measure.

lol. Have helpers. That's why I'm moving to Texas. It's much cheaper there.
Thank you for doing this video...I really couldn't afford psi ,even though all of my stuff is , I just didn't know of anyone else. But now I do.
How about showing how to re mount a motor that the epoxy between the top plate and magnet failed, without a teardown?

Kicker deleted the vent for two reasons 1) to reduce original machining charge 2) to sell you another sub when you thermal the coil ;)
How to center a mid range coil ? Same method ?
correct. Just smaller / thinner shims. Tweeters are different.

Better to measure the gap. Measure the VC windings. (VC winding depth - gap depth) / 2 is the amount of VC coil you want to stick out of the gap
I want ask you
