Gorgeous for the winter where temperatures plummet to 25°c. And I have to say, congrats to I believe a former mayor for the r development of Cairns. So well designed, clean and people friendly.
I was kid when I lived in Cairns during World War 2. That area where you are walking was once all army huts. When you looked out towards the ocean you could see a large number of American Catalina flying boats. It’s all been reclaimed and built on over the years. During World War 2 there were thousands of American servicemen stationed in the area.
At 5:22 you can see water. My father came up on a train from Melbourne in '43; covered in coal soot from the train and decided to jump into the sea on arrival. The tide was out and there was only mud flats.
Thanks for that. I hope you get a chance to get away from the cities while you're here. Cairns is a beautiful city/town, but it's cosmopolitan, like most. There's some absolute delights inland. Enjoy your travels. 🇦🇺😀👍🧑🎄
If you are in Cairns, you would miss out big time if you didn't drive further North up to Port Douglas and feel the silky sand of the beaches or the Sunday Market or go on a cruise snorkeling the reef. The reef's waters off Port Douglas are crystal clear to at least 50 feet deep.
In November it was pleasant here in Cairns- it’s now late January and it’s heating up- usually feel it February and March. Glad to hear you like our little city.
Probably a good idea to wear a hat, sunglasses, shirt and sunscreen. During the Australian Summer not only is the southern hemisphere tilted towards the sun, but the Earth is also at its perihelion (closest point to the sun). The rate of skin cancer is much higher than in the northern hemisphere, and any more than 30 minutes in the sun without protection will likely cause sunburn.
Not to mention a dose of heat exhaustion or worse. Its amazing how many people doing videos we have to tell this to. The flights in should have warnings or something just prior to landing.
Cairns is a bit like Hawaii of which I have visited many times I lived in Cairns for a while before returning to Melbourne lots of cane fields just like Hawaii.sick of the cold in Melbourne. I remember my first time driving from the left from the car hire place up to the top of the Volcano on the big island of Hawaii very scary thing I liked the way you can turn right any time against the traffic lights😜You got to get out to the Cairns Islands to get the real vibe 👀👍
Yes Cairns is beautiful . But the crime the crime is ruining it. But we are very spoilt for so many beautiful places around us Check out the Tablelands it is very beautiful.I live here .
Hardly anyone comes here!?!?!? What Thah! 😂😂 It's only a major international tourist destination! Like the Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef! Loved it 42 years ago when we came to live there, pop was only about 35000 we thought we'd died and come to heaven! Yeah it's a great tourist centre and I guess "ya gotta have progress" $$$$$ Lived there and worked on the Reef tourist boats for 30 years but couldn't stand it any longer so on retirement we moved to the Atherton Table Lands and then to a small town 1½ hours down the coast, to me Cairns itself has turned into a hot dump but is surrounded by exquisite beauty! So yeah its well worth coming here for the Reef and the Rainforest I do still Love the area just not Cairns 😅
Here is Australia, Americans find it strange that we do a sort of line dance to the song Nutbush sung by Tina Turner. Here in Australia we think its strange that Americans send their children to school with a gun, so I guess it all balances out, right?
Been to Cairns once only and loved it. Coast on one side, forest on the other. It’s about nature. I doubt the locals or govt want to turn it into a big city. Also, Australia doesn’t have the population required to so. We have the same population now that USA had back in 1850!!
When we went to Europe from Australia I found it was harder to know how close you were to objects (parked cars and bike riders) on the passenger side of the car.
Cairns is a fairly big international destination. The population basically doubles in peak season with tourists. A favourite of the Japanese in the 80's and 90's. The signs in the city were in English and Japanese and they built so many resorts and hotels. Then the Japanese economy went south and it never hot back to the level of 4-5 747 jets every morning full of tourists back in the day.
So glad that you got to drive a car with the steering wheel on the right (correct) side of the car. President Clinton used to visit here, as he had a friend living in Palm Cove that he stayed with. Also Bill Gates used to stay at a friends house on the cliff at Yorkeys Knob.
hundreds of people are killed by visa license drivers. 5 tourists were killed in my local area in 1 accident - Nigerians driving on the wrong side. International drivers licenses should never be issued without at least some tuition somewhere. Be aware of how difficult it is to switch sides.
Your right. I followed a van load of Chinese from the airport one day, obviously just arrived, and they nearly got cleaned up by a B double right in front of me. All over the road...
Don't be ridiculous. If nobody visits, why is there an international airport there? They get tons of tourists every year. A lot of beaches north of Townsville are muddy, like Cairns. You can see the mud in the water. Whitehaven beach, in the Whitsundays off Proserpine, is one of the world's most intensely beautiful beaches. Pure white sand. And to die for.
Mate, FNQ dont have the nicest beaches. You should check out south coast NSW, Tassie, Victoria, and Southwest WA. Bit cooler, but pristine white beaches.
His hotel is surrounded by high rise apartment buildings that are hotels and he reckons no one visits cairns! It’s a major tourist hub on east coastAustralia. Yanks say dumb things sometimes.
Australia is realy realy realy clean. Amazing beaches weather. Wild life and much much more it’s lay back country. No rushing around like a headless chook realy lay back more relax it’s heaven on earth not one mass school shooting that’s heaven. For teachers little children and hight school students. That’s. Heaven on earth.
Such informative videos. Thanks for the tour! Love the vibe!

This is why I spend 5 months of the year in Cairns. Love the vibe of the place.
Yes. if you are going to spend an extended period of time anywhere in Australia, Cairns is definitely the place.

Please head to Manly on the ferry from Circular Quaya next time you’re in Sydney. It’s a stunning beach walk to Shelly Beach.

Go to Gilligan’s Backpackers and you won’t hear one Aussie accent. Very popular with Europeans and British tourists
Check out Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island.
Driver is always closer to the centre of the road.

He is hilarious. They flew half way around the world to see Trinity Inlet mud? Maybe the excitement is just too much for his brain.

Best beaches are along the NSW coast and Western Australia Beaches in far North Queensland aren’t that good.
You can't go in the water, cross, box jelly fish and Americans!
Croc's
Why are you making your wife carry everything? Put the backpack on your own back mate
No November in Cairns is the start of wet season it is a winter 😊
Are you in another country? It's summer, whether wet or dry.
It’s not winter it’s spring and December starts summer
His hotel is surrounded by high rise apartment buildings that are hotels and he reckons no one visits cairns! It’s a major tourist hub on east coastAustralia. Yanks say dumb things sometimes.
