@@edmondlanceeastridge6039 I truly understand. We had a layover flight coming back into the country two years ago and decided to drive around a little. We drove to San Fran to see the Golden Gate and Alcatraz but were sickened by the needles on the street and actually saw a homeless man deposit feces on the sidewalk in front of our rental car. We were talking to a couple at our motel and they said that Muscle Beach was now the second Skid Rowe. It's scary to see that the people that let this happen to California are now running the country...

Hey Russ, there is a lot of history of that Nipton hotel. Movie stars from the 30’s to the 50’s would ride the train and get off at the hotel and stay there. There are movie stars names on each of the doors in the hotel. From what I remember there’s probably only eight rooms, with two bathrooms and two showers. We stayed there several times in room 3 which was Clara Bows room. We would stay there when we were traveling from Nipton two Laughlin through the mountains with our Manx dune buggy club. There are two memorials just outside the hotel in the garden that we placed there for two of our friends. As far as I know they should still be there. In the hotel just outside the rooms is a sitting area with couches for people to visit. Lots of memorabilia in the glass display cases along with pictures of all the stars and items from the past. Just outside of the hotel is a covered patio area that had a hot tub on the deck. At the restaurant there was a older gentleman named Bill and he was the cook. He had a dog that stayed with him inside the restaurant. Bill was a grumpy old guy and he made it very clear that when you ordered food it only came a certain way, no exceptions. In 2017 the town was sold to a large cannabis company that was hoping to turn it into a cannabis retreat but that never happened and now the town is back on the market.

Boy that Nipton is like a ghost town like I have never seen one before. The Joshua trees are gorgeous when they are that large. But isn't it sad when you see ghost towns and stores closed all because of what I wonder? Have a good one, and be careful out there...Carolyn and Colin Hogarth B.C.

Nipton was purchased by someone some years back and most of the buildings were renovated by the new owners. The place was supposed to be turned into some sort of marijuana retreat but I don't know if the plan ever came to fruition. BTW, that railroad track is a very busy line. Long trains carrying mostly shipping containers pass through there several times a day.

Did you realize that the "lights" you're seeing is actually sunlight reflecting off the mirrors surrounding each tower on the solar power station. The mirrors surrounding each tower reflect sunlight directly to the top of that tower. The heat generated there heats a liquid which is then used to generate electricity.

There is a place where i grew up like that. It's where NJ, NY and PA are all connected.
Pretty, much like the Del Water Gap....but i wouldn't cry if i never saw it again.
I keep hearing the drums of "go west, young man" and "chase the sun"

That large Joshua Tree was likely close to 500 years old, possibly even older. They are a unique species in that they need to grow in hot, dry desert areas, however they need a period of Winter dormancy to thrive, therefore they are generally only found at elevations of 2K to 6K in the Mojave Desert where there are some nights in Winter that dip below freezing.

  • @sunandsage

That big Joshua Tree was a pretty cool find. Probably at least a few hundred years old. They don't grow very fast.
It seemed like I've seen Joshua trees at the upper end of the low desert and the lower end of the high desert. Just an observation.
Thanks for posting this. There's a certain amount of nostalgia regarding my days when I was an OTR driver.
