  • In this video, I'm testing one of the coolest bass gadgets out there. It's the Nordstrand Nordymute, and it basically dampens your bass strings giving you instant James Jamerson vibes.
As always, see you in the shed!

Hope Scott sees this: Could you please mute your vocal microphone when demonstrating tone, or if you mic up an amp, could you please shield it or move further? The dry string noises bleed through, taking away from the difference between two demos.

Hello everyone, I replaced my standard strings with flatwounds, last Saturday. And I’m very happy and satisfied. I was using a piece of sponge. But no need for that anymore. The flatwounds are sooooo much better. A bit expensive but worth the money. Less fret noise, jazzy tone and soooo smooth to the touch. Great feel also. I recommend them. 🎸 practicing is so much more fun.

40 U.S. Bucks.... or use a piece of grey packing foam placed under the strings... like the rest of us who won't be ripped off à la StewMac "specialist" musician's tools...!!! Sometimes these manufacturers/retailers reckon we're ALL daft...🤪

Why would I want my bass to be even more quiet? I mean really, at this point just get rid of the bass. Might as well just make every record from here on out and justice for all.

I cut a piece of styrofoam to fit snugly under the strings, achieved the same effect for free

That's a double bass if I ever heard one.

I just use a sponge in a sock and it doesn’t cost me $40

I have one of these and like it a lot. Of course you can just use a sponge, but being able to easily take this on and off and adjust the degree of muting is really convenient. And $40 for something I use every day and expect to last quite a long time is, for me personally, totally reasonable.

Love mine. Could DIY it easily but this saves loads of hassle and has lasted several years.

I haven't tried this gaget, but it looks high in the queue for DIY.

This is by far the best tone I’ve ever heard you have.

  • @Cchogan

I use the white magic sponges - those things that are meant to clean everything and don't really? However, they are simply the perfect density to mute the base. Cut a strip and push is under the strings. Magic!

Such a small simple thing can bring a bass player joy.

I think I can do this at home, with my dish sponge. But, it's cool!

I've always used - still do to this day - a damp tea towel. Gives that beautiful muted sound.
