Exactly if you actually watch what he does he slides in behind her this becoming a barrier to her moving further away. Positioned behind her she'd have been crushed between the basket and Debling if Colin, and the guys helping him, hadn't kept the basket from getting closer to Penelope. It really was Colin's quick thinking, taking action and calling for help that saved Penelope. If Debling was truly trying to protect her heroically he'd have slid in between her and the basket to prevent the basket injuring her. What he did actually put her more in danger than less.
@@Loulizabeth Yeah and we've all had this type of situation in life where we take a chance on someone, because we think it may be a better match, but sometimes these people are not as great as they seem. It's a great touch from the show creators.I'm glad they didn't use the old trope that Debling is great , but she and Collin are meant to be together so he has to back off. Here he's just a suitor, but not that special.
Easy Fix: 1) Eloise immediately turns around and goes back for Penn, dragging her out of the way. “Penn, move! What are you thinking?!” 2) Now gaping at Eloise, Penn is trying to think of a response other than, “Oh, I was staring at your brother.” 3) Debling makes a comment about animals freezing in place when frightened, apologizing to Penn for not thinking of her first. 4) Cressida feigns injury because she’s jealous of the concern Eloise is showing for Penn, Debling’s attention a mere bonus.
He deserves someone who would want to come with him on his expedition instead of being content to be left behind for three years. His logic is skewed. He was totally okay with marrying her (or any other woman) and leaving her behind. If he's concerned about fidelity, he should bring her along, whoever it is. Even a woman who doesn't have a years-long crush is still human and will be longing for affection and companionship.
Someone posted that Nicola said that Pen was meant to be entranced and then concerned for Colin as he tried to keep the basket down. She wasn’t paying any attention to why he might be holding the rope. The final edit here is just a terrible combination of shots that absolutely does not show Pen’s real thoughts. Here it looks like as she realizes she’s in danger, she is frozen in fear a little too long which puts her in more danger. But it doesn’t work because the angle used for the danger shot makes it clear that she has ample time just walk out of the way. Honestly, what bothers me about the edit choices is that we don’t get Colin seeing Debling with his hands on Pen. That’s the reaction shot they really needed to sell the whole thing. This entire episode was about Colin’s jealousy as he becomes hyper aware of Debling and Pen’s genuine draw to each other. He knew where she was every moment. So for us not to see his reaction to seeing either Debling holding Pen or even helping her up or something just didn’t make narrative sense.
There were many directorial and writing choices that left me frustrated throughout the season. I've found myself being very defensive and protective of Polin, the characters and the actors that play them. It's sad that choices beyond their control can lead to any criticism towards them because they have been nothing short of phenomenal. But one silver lining is that more doors will open for Luke and Nicola post Bridgerton and I'm excited to see their next projects. Hoping they'll work together again.
I’m not sure if I 100% agree with you on everything, but I 1000% agree they needed a shot of Colin looking forlorn as Debling shielded Pen from danger. And then, yeah, they could’ve done a way better job selecting many of the other takes and stitching it all together. Also, the way Debling held her, I’m not sure he was actually protecting her from anything… Like, if anything, her body was probably still shielding him. 🤦♂️
@@ltdowney A shield. Absolutely agree. I was looking at them on the ground like “okay…how is this a protective position?!” His idea of protecting her was to pull her close? But from behind? What? If the guys hadn’t have been able to hold the basket then Pen would have gotten the most damage anyway because she was literally being used like a shield. I mean, come on man! You ran back to protect the woman. The least he could have done was shift on top of her so his side or back took the potential damage. I think maybe they were going for a comparison. Colin is protective of her but too far away to actually help her. So he jumps in to try and stop the thing that’s going to hurt her. Whereas Debling isn’t protective of her at all and runs away at first, then returns last minute and uses her like a shield. Like they were trying to say to the audience “look! he doesn’t have any attachment to her!” But why would he? He hasn’t known her for years like Colin has. Debling’s response was formality. Colin’s was panic for a loved one’s safety.
@@kailyns8159 I deleted my original reply because I think it went way too far / got way too graphic talking about shielding someone from bodily harm, but just wanted to come back and comment on the rest of your post. 😅 I actually think your second paragraph is super on-point regarding the narrative symbolism. Colin has always kept Pen at arm’s length, even when he’s protecting her. Debling is close, but extremely superficial security. That’s actually fantastic, I love that.
Penelope frozen in fear like people sometimes do in a out of nowhere situation. Then when she finally reacted to leave, she fell. I’m honestly a bit upset that Eloise did not drag Penelope with her when it happened. I know Eloise and Penelope are on the fence with one another but Eloise left her there all the same. I’m not happy with that. Colin and the others were the ones that stopped the balloon and saved Penelope from getting hit by it. Plus they had to stop it from taking off. Imagine no one in it and takes off then when there is hardly any wind to keep it functioning, it would drop fast onto a house, carriage, in the middle of the road or onto someone which would make it terrible all the same. So they needed to make sure it would not take off. Thanks for uploading.
I think what people don’t understand is Penelope probably already KNEW she could move aside, but why do that when there’s a Lord nearby who can come to her rescue?😏 Remeber people she is Whistledown after all
I really don't think she was thinking that far ahead. She was shocked, then distracted by Colin being all hot, then came to her senses to run, then tripped. I think she was rather surprised Debling came to her rescue.
Sometimes your brain doesn’t work in fight-or-flight situations, like it should be called fight-or-flight-or-freeze. Plus these poor ladies of the Ton from 200 years ago were preeeeeeetty sheltered. I dunno - and I’m sorry if this sounds like mansplaining - but I did not find it unbelievable or unrealistic for her to stand there frozen.

You mean when he legs it out of the without any thought for the women around him till he hears Penelope cry out. Them when he goes back to "save" her he slides in behind her, which actually prevents her from getting further away from the basket and leaves Penelope trapped between Debling and the basket. If the basket had got loose Debling actions would have left Penelope crushed not saved. He also immediately abandons Penelope when Cressida fakes her injury.
