They were likely observing our offensive strategy, seeing as we were still at the tail end of the cold war.
It's really not that surprising. During the Cold War if the US was doing military operations anywhere, the Soviets were going to be watching it to gather intel and vice versa.

@@gausly1032 perhaps, however if someone takes a swing at you and misses, you have still been assaulted. Times were different then, the US was at the time, doing everything possible to avoid any sort of confrontation with anyone for any reason. Which in my opinion encouraged the conflicts of the 80s and later. It’s somewhat cliche, but you may get away with poking a sleeping bear once or twice, but eventually you will be made aware of your mistake, not always in a friendly diplomatic fashion

If you want another example of the US starting a war over their boats, just look at vietnam. One of the reasons they sent troops into Vietnam was because of an incident one night where a ship (or aircraft carrier) thought it got shot at by a small North Vietnamese boat. They sent aircraft to scout for the Vietnamese boat, but weren’t able to find it. Some of the crew even admitted that there was a rough storm that night and that it was very possible that there wasn’t even a Vietnamese boat and it was just from the storm.
Instead, the US “retaliated”.
A more recent story. Iran was tracking a US drone aircraft and sent two Iranian F-4s to possibly shoot it down. Their radars did not pick up the F-22s patroling the area. One of the F-22s snuck up behind then under the Iranian planes to see what kind of missiles they were carrying. The F-22 then pulled up next to the F-4s and radioed to the pilots "It might be a good idea to go home". The F-4s did.
The 22s were there specifically to escort the drone because a previous drone had been shot down. Both 22s pulled up on the F4s and what was radiod to them was "You should go home" and like you said, they did indeed go home.
Damn, all that while in the air going so fast, wild.

The reason the left Alpha group out, was to confuse the Iranian’s. If Iran could find B,C, and D. They would have been worried about finding the location of A and thus using unnecessary resources to find something that isn’t there.
This is common in military planning. Skipping numbers/letters leaving out whole groups of designations for exactly that reason. Sometimes it's an intentional deception, but for the most part it's simply standard procedure.

I know that it isn't the most technical impressive story, but it just explains everything about their fighting spirit: The USS Texas DELIBERATELY flooded one side of the ship so they could shoot further with their canons. I served under the command of Capt McTigue, the Commanding Officer of the USS Simpson that fired the surface to air missile that took out the Iranian ship. He was THE BEST COMMANDING OFFICER I ever served under.

The US Navy damage control doctrine is also what happens when you take 'learning from your mistakes' to it's ultimate absurdity. After the near shitshow of some of the losses in WW2 (and watching the IJN actually be worse a few times), and the near loss of the USS Forrestal about 25 years later, the Navy pretty much trains every sailor to be a firefighter and damage con expert to the point that the only way to actually SINK a US vessel now adays is to turn it into steel confetti.

I worked on the USS Roberts on its repair. It was seriously close to sinking. Tons of overtime on that job. It was an extensive repair job, unlike any I have seen before or since.

I had the chance to share a beer with one of the damage control NCO's from the Roberts who was there. And ya, they knew their stuff and were the best of the best. That crew WILLED their ship to stay up and managed it. Very few ships would have taken that level of damage and been able to stay afloat; let alone get back to port on her own power. Massive respect for those teams.

I was in the Navy 10 years after this. My destroyer was of the coast of a nation we are generally friendly with. They sent their entire navy out to get us. The nearest carrier was 400 miles away so we were on our own. They were chased off just by our fire control radar lighting them up.

The USS Robert’s and the USS Cole are both testament to the amazing engineering and construction of these ships. We also can’t forget the incredibly brave men and women who serve on them and were able to prevent these ships from sinking with the odds stacked against them due to the damage of the ships.
That’s a testament to the training!
I think the USS San Francisco as well. That boat really had no business surviving that collision and they just wound up saying welp🤷♂️ cut the front off of the honolulu and welded it on to the San Francisco and it's still in use (and probably will be for like the next 50 years if the other MTS's are any indication) as an MTS right now.
To clarify they didn't send it straight to Charleston to be an MTS, it was an active submarine until 2017.

As a sailor who worked in the galley aboard two different supercarriers (Lincoln and Carl Vincent), they feed the sailors pretty darn well! And Navy coffee is legendary, no one can have just one slice.
Heck, American ships have defeated enemy ships with just potatoes. And the Navy has LOTS of potatoes.

@@carterpritchard5063 It wasn't so much a trick as it was a suprise - to both sides. The USS O'Bannon spotted a Japanese sub on the surface and chased her down. Allegedly, the sub got so close, O'Bannon couldn't aim low enough to hit it. The official word is that the boat's captain claimed one of the cooks cook said "They were close enough to hit them with a potato." The remark spiraled into the idea that the O'Bannon sunk the sub with potatoes. There's no record of such a sinking though. It may have been incorrect, but what a morale boost.

America has a very long history of "proportional response" to someone messing with our ships. The War of 1812 was largely started because the British were stopping American flagged ships and taking our sailors, The Barbary Pirates in the early 1800's were raiding everyone's shipping and the US basically said "Okay... Enough!" Those are just two early examples.
We (The US) then went on to pirate the pirates. Demanding a hefty payment or for them to do the finding out part of, "Fuck around and find out." That was pretty well the end of the Barbary Pirates. It was actually kind of funny. They ruled for so long under the British, they forgot to watch their backs.
Didn't the US also, kinda... tried to invade Canada? TBH, 1812 was kind of a shitshow for everyone. And then Canada got to demonstrate what happens when they stop apologizing. Promptly counter invaded and burnt The White House down. That was a good lesson of FAAFO for the US to learn.
I'm still astonished that a good chunk of Geneva Convention was because of Canada did during WW1. Like, seriously. WTF, Canada? You scary.

We train and train on damage control 😊 During the Vietnam War the USS Forestall had a missile from a plane on deck misfire and hit another plane loaded with bombs and missiles.It was catastrophic and wiped out the damage control team! After that the Navy decided that all crew members will be trained in firefighting and damage control. Every sailor in the Navy is trained.

We frequently don't give call signs in order to confuse people who intercept radio transmissions. If you hear them say, "Bravo, Charlie, and Delta are all in this area." The person listening will do what you did and say, "One group is unaccounted for. Send scouts to find it."
This makes them waste resources and makes the lower enlisted more likely to surrender when they think there is an even more overwhelming force.
Our first Special Forces group was called 10th Group for this very reason.

I was over there for Operation Earnest Will (protecting Kuwaiti oil tankers in the Persian Gulf). The Soviets were always flying over us and taking pictures while doing UNREP's (Underway Replenishment) because they couldn't figure out how we did it. We usually mooned them or flipped them off. 😅

Americans learned alot of important lessons in damage control during WWII, to the point where ships were taking damage that would sink 90% of other ships but still keeping the thing going. In the Battle of Samar Taffy 3 ran into Kurita's Center force (actually Center forcer ran into them) and hits were made on one impetuous destroy named USS Johnston. Instead of sinking and being completely usless after a shell hit vital machinary knocking out guns and cutting the ships speed, within 5m the damage control parties onboard Johnston got her guns back up and firing.

You have to remember this is at the height of the cold war so they were trying to collect as much information as they could about how the US Navy operates, it's weapon capabilities, and other pertinent intel. It sounds funny the way he describes it, but they were essentially doing an intelligence gathering mission.
The Samuel B. Roberts (or "Sammy B" for short) is one of those legacy Navy ship names where if you are on that ship, you are one of the best. The OG ship was a Destroyer Escort, a relatively small ship, notable for charging a ship (IJN Chokai) with probably 10x the displacement (10x larger), blowing off the rear of that larger ship, and then proceeded to maul it with 5-inch cannon fire until it essentially ran dry before getting struck by a japanese gun and sinking. That is, it ran out of solid shot, High-Explosive, then anti-aircraft, then starburst shells...it fired EVERYTHING IT HAD.
So yeah, the crew of the more modern Sammy B being excellent is no surprise, but still a major acheivement.

Real reason USSR warships were in the area, Iraq had petitioned the US for aid. US said no. USSR volunteered and showed up. US not one to be outshone by USSR agrees to defend travel lanes.
I'm fairly sure that it's standard Russian protocol to have multiple BS excuses ready to go at all times.
My gramps flew an A6 Intruder in Vietnam. Was a new plane at the time and as a high ranking officer he got the newest of planes. He loved that plane, but he was shot down early in the war. 8 yr pow, Hanoi Hilton POW leader, Senator of Alabama (Roll Tide). Miss him.

Like I would be considered a Trump supporter because I voted for him, but I definitely do not LIKE the guy, I just felt he was a better alternative to his opponents and his policies were more beneficial as a whole. And I feel that the majority of 'Trump Supporters' are like that, not the rabid fans that the Dems like showing on their videos

America has always been the Peacekeepers. The reason we have so many allies is that we've never failed to heed the call when our fellow allied countries are in a tough spot. You could call the U.S. Navy "the Gentleman's Navy" because they're so polite and give ample warning and state their intentions clearly to give the enemy time to evacuate before destroying their military capability. Russia was more than likely observing how our Navy operates to see our fighting strategy. These last few remaining countries that refuse to get on board with keeping the peace worldwide and playing fair on a world economic scale do themselves no favors. Just look at Russia at the moment. We don't have a single boot in the dirt or plane in the sky or ship in the water and because we and our allies are working together with Ukraine to push Putin's army out the Russian military is being slaughtered. It's such a sad and pathetic sight. They'll never learn. They have their people believing that we're all Nazis trying to finish the job from WWII. Their leadership is complete idiots.

I was in the US Navy. One essential part of training is flood control. That's where I was put in a water tight room with a team. A pipe or a valve would burst and we had to stop the flooding could cause us to drown. Sometimes, it was flooded room. We waited as the water went over our heads. Then we had to fix the leak underwater holding our breaths until the water would subside. Well, there were saety monitors to release water if they felt the job was not going to be done.
One thing people forget about when you say something affects gas prices, is that "gas price" means an extra expenditure to supply lines. That is all food, and everything shipped via boat, plane, or truck. Oil is the most important resource of the supply chain, which is why when a country is invaded, capturing oil is the number one priority, unless you're the US. Yeah, people always talk about the US invading countries for their oil, but that didn't happen in the Middle East, which is why/how ISIS was able to become so rich and so powerful so quickly.

Prior to this my ship was in the gulf with the U.S.S. Stark that was hit by 2 Exocet missiles before I got out of the Navy, when this happened I thought I might be recalled to active duty. As for Silkworm Missile's as an FT ( now FC) we used to laugh at them, they had to radiate you for almost 30 minutes to get a lock so you knew well ahead of time they were coming and they were so large that the flew slow, we used to joke you could ride a bicycle faster than they could fly.
One must remember, at this time the clerics running Iran had a bad habit of ignoring whether or not the orders were suicide and were not at all reluctant to make "examples" of anyone who did not obey orders stupid or not. All in all, it does explain a lot of this.

Both the Roberts and the Cole were damaged in ways that would sink MOST ships. It was only the crews of both "boats" that saved these ships.

I’ve heard the full story of the fight to save the USS Samuel B. Roberts and it lays out exactly what the Navy fed these guys; a steady diet of training, competition, and tradition/hero worship, onboard the frigate was a memorial plaque to the coxswain Samuel B. Roberts who was it’s namesake and the crew of the famous Destroyer Escort USS Samuel B. Roberts from the Battle off Samar that history remembers as, ”The Destroyer Escort that fought like a Battleship,” the story goes that they started tapping that thing every time they went by during the fight to save the ship for inspiration, apparently it worked.

Funny idea: playing Battleship but one side is the US. The non US has a normal board; the US side has 5 carriers, 4 destroyers, 3 cruisers, and 2 patrol boats. And America gets more turns the more ships have been sunk as their response gets more "proportional".
I worked as a welder at a shipyard where we repair naval vessels as well as cruise boats, dredges, and other large boats and we can definitely do that kind of large scale repair on a ship like that. We took a boat and split it in half and added about a 10-20 foot section to the whole thing.
I have a brother who was a lifer sailor in the US Navy. He was on a ship that chased an Iranian ship to a nuteral port. They ran hard and fast. He was in the navy during the Reagan administration and served on a refurbished WWII battle ship. I believe he was also on a few frigates during this era.
When the fighter jets pull a U-turn on those ships, it's just an extreme example of when an average citizen watches the State Highway Patrol whip a U-turn, and you pray they aren't coming after you! Both are "Oh Shit" moments 🤣

They are a fairly light AA weapon, useful against low flying planes, but they have about a 2,500 meter range. The military isn't in the habit of informing enemy's when and where the're planning to strike. I guess they figured most people on the oil rigs were civilians.
It was a military action, not a war. Rules are different, and yes civilians on the rigs (maybe even a US citizen or two since we know how to get oil). 👽🗿👽

For this reason, when naming units, us Yanks just run down the alphabet, skipping letters here and there, and almost always skipping at least the first letter or two.

Every now and then we have our shit together and we can accomplish amazing things.
Fun fact. Of all the American ships that were damaged or destroyed during Pearl Harbor only 3 ships were not repaired and then sent to get revenge on Japan. For additional context 21 ships were damaged or sunk. That means we repaired 18 ships and then sent them out to get revenge and eventually dropped the power of the sun on them. Don't touch America's boats.
Man, the US military is so well trained. I've talked to a lot of people who think China would "Win" because of Numbers... But, then it becomes a battle of Quantity Vs. Quality. And, I think we know how that tends to work out.
Also, just the "American Spirit" is something people always overlook... Especially when it comes to Marines and Special Forces... Once the Hell Hounds get released, those bois will fight to their last breath and see how high they can get their body count before visiting Valhalla.

As a member of the US military, unless you have a direct order, or have been fired on first, you aren't supposed to attack anybody, and we are trained in I guess mitigation techniques to talk down an enemy and prevent any shots from being fired. Think of it as Self-Defense I guess. Don't throw the first punch, but if fists start flying... have fun.

My uncle was a navy man for over 30 years. Upon his retirement he started a brokeage firm that stocked EVERY WAR SHIP with all of their supplies .. he passed in2017 but during his time on this planet he did everything he could to keep our country safe .....
