I recently had channel growth for a gaming channel, I was extremely happy as I was getting tons of engagements. Now, my videos barely get anything to what they once had going. Went from struggling to grow, I grew with ease but now struggling to get views/support from main majority of my subscribers and I don't even clickbait. I don't even know on what to actually do now. I'll keep trying but the passion is starting to fade with dread and fear of growing to only get nothing back in return. I have no idea on what's wrong with the modern day audience.
Every time I finish one of your video essays I find myself back on your channel page just marvelling at how amazing and different these videos are to the content I originally came to your channel for. Having quitted destiny a while before you did I hadn't engaged with your channel (or any Destiny related content) in a long time as I didn't want to FOMO myself into a relapse, these new videos however have brought me back after said hiatus and its such a beautiful reunion. I wish you the best of luck in your pivot towards other content, and please keep making such delightful videos. :)
I love how you basically did what the Ludwig video says to do, its extremely enjoyable to watch/listen to and was educational. Well played but also great video
This is a genuinely good video. Well in depth. You’ve done your research and covered a lot of good topics with plenty of things to back up your statements.
I think youtube is losing the war on bad content in general, not just clickbait, most of the content on youtube is just reacting nontent, or video essay nontent
Sucks as we had something that combated this somewhat *dislike button* cough but big companies and sponsors hated getting dislikes on their videos so it was removed
I don't know if it's because I'm highly critical or because I'm autistic and my mind works differently, but the best performing thumbnails and titles really put me off. Especially when there's someone's face looking surprised. UGH. I actively tell UA-cam "Don't recommend this channel". One of my favourite UA-camrs, Debug Your Brain, who makes excellent videos about psychology and changing minds... I DESPISE his thumbnails and titles.
I feel a little robbed, I thought this video was going to be more about Jacksepticeye's arguments about Mr. Beast. LOL thumbnail got me, and it was a good video.
You're close to reaching the next step in UA-cam corruption, and one that has serious moral/ethical implications; react content. It is labor exploitation, and the grayness of it means it's really easy to fall into a thought cycle that react content is not only good content, but beneficial content; both are false. I recommend watching DarkViperAU's video on react content, "Reactors: The Professional Parasites" and associated series. He does the most thorough breakdown of how react content is an ultimate net negative for everyone on UA-cam. It's vital more people understand these concepts.
Hats off for your team to dive into the belly of the beast and flexing that journalism muscle. These are expensive productions and I hope that these efforts pay off in the long run versus gaming content videos.
Honestly I don't understand why people don't curate their pages. There is an option to stop showing specific channels, and poof, that channel will never show up again. Last time I saw genuine click bait was over a year ago
UA-cam shorts are becoming a cesspool of bad content. Between every other scroll being an ad for adult content websites (not sure how that works since I mostly watch gaming and news based content) and repeat green screen videos it's just bad.
Suggestion: stop watching shorts entirely! If you need a push to do this, and if you're tech savvy and comfortable with getting your hands dirty, search "revanced manager"
The other problem is simply that their priorities are wrong. They might be a bit more effective at fighting this stuff if they stopped singling out specific creators for harassment and mobbing them off the platform for ridiculous bs, and actually worked to make their guidelines and moderation more fair, effective, and easier to work with/understand. They seem to go more after actual creators using clickbait thumbnails than they do bot accounts whose entire content base is clickbait, as you’re talking about.
Always keep in mind, most of the videos watched on this platform, is by children, kid these days are raised by tiktok and youtube, my nephew is 3 years old, if he's not in school, he's on the tablet watching youtube, watching the most brainrot stuff you can imagine, why do you think Skibiti Toilet is a thing, the youtube algorithm is heavily geared towards 7 year olds that can't even read. I legitimately think the internet would be better if kids and teenagers had their separate section of it, no 8 year old on youtube, no 12 year old on twitter, no 15 year old on snapchat, no tiktok
It might not be a solvable problem, because UA-cam exists to make money; and if the best solution for consumers and creatives isn't also the most profitable, then they will continue using a "bad" system until they are fiscally pressured to do so.
Amazing video that hopefully will spark more discourse/discussion, hopefully it will also teach a lot of people on all the different clickbaits. Also good choice with music, I've noticed you used Zelda, Hollow Knight, and Minecraft. Keep up the great content
8:24 this is otherwise known as “rage bait”, majority of people who watch or see these things we all collectively say, rage bait, the best we can do is call it out or walk away, engagement feeds these people money
i mean maybe you could argue that youtube should raise the line limit before a read more is set, but i feel like its pretty rreasonable as-is. either you put a character limit on comments, or you put a readmore on long comments, otherwise itd be a lot more annoying to scroll through a comment section. having character limits is more significant for full on social media posts, rather than the comments on those posts.
Great video and love the way you emulate some of these trends in both subtle and overt ways throughout the watch. Clearly well-thought out and just a good watch overall. Hoping this comment helps with engagement :p
For me, it's the "got owned/destroyed/annihilated" videos that definitely aren't that, or the thumbnails that include someone making some stupid face - and yes, that includes some of my favorite D2 content creators.
It's stupid, UA-cam is making its job harder by not at all paying attention to the stuff I'm actually viewing and giving me things it thinks I want to watch. I want to watch things I want to watch, not things someone else is watching.
The thing about ragebait videos is, it's not really a youtube problem, it's a problem of the environment we find ourselves in. Everything on every level for the average person is fucked, there's no hope for the future so people are angry.
youtube isn't losing! that would imply they cared in the first place. all they want is more money. they might claim to be against clickbait but in reality they love it, means more ad rev for them.
The reality is that as long as social media is algorithmically driven to seek engagement above all other metrics, our online communication will continue to degrade into oblivion.
youtube is not fighting the clickbait, they don't care. They don't care about bots, they don't care about AI, they don't care about bad UI design because they're pushing a lot of that shit. When you scrolled down through YT site, it made me glad I have adblockers, sponsorblock and tampermonkey so I can curate YT to be what it SHOULD be, not what it is. Ever since the new guy started there's been a massive increase in bots and clickbait, and as long as YT gets it's ad-rev it gives not 1 iota of a fuck. Why do you think they fight so hard against adblockers (and are losing)?
The search functionality sucks today too. It will show you a handful of results and then just start showing random stuff it recommends. UA-cam used to be such a great place to find really specific instructional videos and stuff but now it's a struggle to find useful stuff.
@@CerberusPlusOne If you are referring to the Videogamedunkey clip, that isn't a reaction channel. Dunkey has a reaction video on his channel, making fun of other reaction videos.
@@CerberusPlusOne I suppose it depends how you view reaction channels. I'd argue it falls under fair use, and I think they serve a similar goal to that of Let's Play channels. People watch let's plays to see the creator react to the game, I think reaction channels are probably in that same boat
I dunno that Dunkey is the best example here since a lot of his content revolves around the concept of being harsh and condescending of other people's art under a -- and I'm sorry for this -- not even particularly thin veneer of parody. Fans of japanese RPGs that watch Dunkey have been mentioned as everything between outright stupid, to incapable of understanding what the concept of "fun" is. Nevermind how the actual creators of that art may feel. It's very easy to forget that there's a butt to every joke when the butt of the joke is always the same and it never includes you. He's also never been shy from saying he does that specifically to rile that demographic up, at which point how is that any different from your garden variety ragebait nonsense? I think at some point we either accept that someone's going to be hurt in the process of content creation and that you are obligated to cater to people's rage in order to get big on this platform, or we strive to filter out people whose content necessitates hurting someone for the amusement of somebody else.
Too be fair. Jack is part of the problem about people fighting. He started taking up dumb talking points from games media like resident evil being racist.
I know what you did. Im assuming you tried the thumbnail option that can show 3 different thumbnails. For me it shows Jack, for others Asmon. Im curious how the analytics look lol. I love the cleverness of that.
Hey. You're doing a good job running your channel and trying to entertain people with insightful commentary over a topic, I'm sure, speaks to you. I just wanted to let you know that.
Monetization ruined UA-cam. UA-cam was a much better site before monetization. People made videos because they loved to make videos. All monetization has brought is far stricter rules and algorithm trend chasers. Look at Game Theory for example. They used to make great videos and then they hit the algorthm jackpot with FNAF and then that's like all the content they made.
9:58 my gripe with titles like this is that all the video does is provide a synopsis of an episode with no input or opinion. so many times i click them, and realise halfway that they just told me an episode of the topic in the same time span that i could have watched in my free time which would be a bait, to cash engagement by people in the comments to give their opinions and inputs.
As someone who watches a good amount of youtube, I also dislike how I have to actively search for anything new or interesting. Big channels get promoted, channels I already subscribe to/watch get promoted, but over 50% of that is videos I may have watched a few years back, or even recently.
The rules I follow when on UA-cam. I always “Don’t recommend channel” anything with AI narrations. I usually scroll past videos with “I bla bla bla some crazy title” because they usually have parenthesis and the word “I” in the title of their video. I don’t watch very much videos where creators use the same facial expressions in their thumbnails. It’s feels cringy to me…and even more so when you go specifically to their videos and all of them are recycled facial expressions 😖. I have a set of people I watch based on the quality of their content and usually focus on those videos. Every now and then I’d get some random video that is good quality. I check out the content creator and support if I like it.
you have such a good and welcoming writing and speaking style, and it's always interesting. I may have started watching with destiny content, but i'm gonna keep watching because of how well you present content.
I'm sick of this world. We are only getting worse at everything. I hate living today. Everyone just wants your money one way or another. Nothing matters. We are a society in crisis.
Hate and anger is from my experience more powerful a driver of action than any other emotions. People are more likely to fill out a survey if they hated an experience vs if they loved their experience. Almost nobody asks to speak to a manager or supervisor due to great service. Think about that next time you’re out. So click bait meant to feed off of and encourage rage will often drive engagement better. Whether you too are angry, their creator’s opinion made you angry, or the bait and switch title made you angry. All have a higher chance of driving you to the comment section.

My most annoying things is you can't actually block channels like i don't want anything from this and it just doesn't go away even if you put in the exclusion lines in the search it only removes about 95% of that channel i should be able to block a channel i don't want to see ever And another is for example on mobile if you see a short you don't like you have to click it to not recommend report or even see the name which puts it into the clicked videos bringing it back like wtf

@@theirishviking9278 I think terms like "MOBA" do have a kind of connotation that wouldn't match things like CoD, which I view as often more significant than what's technically accurate
@@cinderwolf32 true i just like pointing out how useless that definition of games is
a better one for my point would have been marsupials and mammals
I like that one a lot better!
Yea same happened to me around 2019/20 and feel like everyone got hit with lower Viewer ship since around that time (possibly worse)
10:01 okay, but like, _Phineas and Ferb_ unironically is the best show out of the ones you showed.
I love how you basically did what the Ludwig video says to do, its extremely enjoyable to watch/listen to and was educational. Well played but also great video
That borderlands music though....chefs kiss
This is a genuinely good video. Well in depth. You’ve done your research and covered a lot of good topics with plenty of things to back up your statements.
9:27 well played good sir well played
Had to like for that, as I was mainly listening to this. Somewhat watching. Deserves a like for this content
100%
Actually made me feel a little guilty but hey. I am subbed. 🤷🏻♂️
@@AdventZZZx He got us good
Buzz word overuse, like "worst, best, most, how to get/make, if I could, etc."
Shorts are a breeding ground for this type of content and ends up hurting shorts
that BL2 sound track is so good, fits the video so well man
I feel a little robbed, I thought this video was going to be more about Jacksepticeye's arguments about Mr. Beast. LOL thumbnail got me, and it was a good video.
Glad to see how you're switching content styles for more engaging, critique topics. Love to see more of your style of videos.
Love that you are doing video essays now! Glad you jumped ship on Destiny. I will continue to watch you! ❤
Hats off for your team to dive into the belly of the beast and flexing that journalism muscle. These are expensive productions and I hope that these efforts pay off in the long run versus gaming content videos.
This was a nice change of video. I'd definitely watch more videos like this.
Metal Gear Solid 2 predicted this.
Honestly I don't understand why people don't curate their pages. There is an option to stop showing specific channels, and poof, that channel will never show up again. Last time I saw genuine click bait was over a year ago
its not youtube anymore, it's corporatetube
I like the Borderlands 2 menu music, honestly a nice touch. Great video too
Hollow Knight!! Thought the music was in my head, as I'm watching this video just after playing it!
0:36 borderlands 2 menu music, great choice
@@sicarus1090 was about to come down and say the same thing such a vibe 😂
UA-cam shorts are becoming a cesspool of bad content. Between every other scroll being an ad for adult content websites (not sure how that works since I mostly watch gaming and news based content) and repeat green screen videos it's just bad.
Suggestion: stop watching shorts entirely! If you need a push to do this, and if you're tech savvy and comfortable with getting your hands dirty, search "revanced manager"
using the mario bob omb minigame gameplay to illustrate your point gave me such a weird nostalgia
Loving your transition out of Destiny content. I hope the quality keeps going up and up like these last two videos!
That Borderlands music is like a warm hug to my wretched soul.
Yep, you're definitely more than a Destiny Creator. Great vid man. I'll be sticking around for more of your video essays for sure.
The solution is simple. If you see clickbait, block the channel.
It's stupid, UA-cam is making its job harder by not at all paying attention to the stuff I'm actually viewing and giving me things it thinks I want to watch. I want to watch things I want to watch, not things someone else is watching.
man i want to go back when clickbait was only rick astley's song
The thing about ragebait videos is, it's not really a youtube problem, it's a problem of the environment we find ourselves in.
Everything on every level for the average person is fucked, there's no hope for the future so people are angry.
Describing UA-cam as Pandora with the Borderlands 2 music was genius.
it’s times like these i miss jenna marbles the most. she didn’t even have thumbnails, it was just a random unedited still from the video itself
You have a really good voice for short-form and long form video essays, would absolutely watch more videos like this!
Unlike Twitter, I do understand the need for a need an algorithm here, but man I just miss the internet as it was 10 years ago.
The implication being that UA-cam doesn't want clickbait. I believe it absolutely does want it.
youtube isn't losing! that would imply they cared in the first place. all they want is more money.
they might claim to be against clickbait but in reality they love it, means more ad rev for them.
Ngl, seeing a UA-camr I know as a destiny UA-camr do a video in this format and topic is interesting. Brave even. I like it.
Has anyone else noticed that most of gun youtubers dont clickbait. Not sure why that is but i think its cool
11:55 It's not exactly the same, but complaining about content theft while praising a reaction channel is a weird disconnect for me.
@@CerberusPlusOne If you are referring to the Videogamedunkey clip, that isn't a reaction channel. Dunkey has a reaction video on his channel, making fun of other reaction videos.
@@n.holt7 yeah! That's so strange, he only make a spoof reaction video and now he's a reaction channel baffling
Glitch MENTIONED!!! I love their animations so much and their rise as an indie studio is sooooo nice
Too be fair. Jack is part of the problem about people fighting. He started taking up dumb talking points from games media like resident evil being racist.
8:06 Reporting videos doesn't work at all.
The one guy who had "PEDO" in the thumbnail yet never talked about it:
Monetization ruined UA-cam. UA-cam was a much better site before monetization. People made videos because they loved to make videos. All monetization has brought is far stricter rules and algorithm trend chasers. Look at Game Theory for example. They used to make great videos and then they hit the algorthm jackpot with FNAF and then that's like all the content they made.
9:58 my gripe with titles like this is that all the video does is provide a synopsis of an episode with no input or opinion.
so many times i click them, and realise halfway that they just told me an episode of the topic in the same time span that i could have watched in my free time
which would be a bait, to cash engagement by people in the comments to give their opinions and inputs.
I also like to make sure to respect the fact that there are real people behind the screen. It’s easy to forget that.
you have such a good and welcoming writing and speaking style, and it's always interesting. I may have started watching with destiny content, but i'm gonna keep watching because of how well you present content.

This is a burner account. If you remember.. I’m batman btw. Or should I say the owlman,-of white and black.

Idk why you're saying new when they've been on the platform for 13 years and have experience as an OG youtuber.
My god .. that borderlands music didnt even recognize it at first
And yeah youtube is going down hill a fair bit
I LOVE the direction with this channel, love to see that your recovering from your addiction
love the video essays keep em up
0:44 Hold up, Idkhow and Caravan palace!? W music choices.
UA-cam is fixing clickbait with 5 min adds, people will become more selective of what they watch
My most annoying things is you can't actually block channels like i don't want anything from this and it just doesn't go away even if you put in the exclusion lines in the search it only removes about 95% of that channel i should be able to block a channel i don't want to see ever
And another is for example on mobile if you see a short you don't like you have to click it to not recommend report or even see the name which puts it into the clicked videos bringing it back like wtf
Borderlands 2 title music.
