    Saying the functionality of the watch is a con is like saying a scientific calculator is garbage because it has too many buttons. It's designed for pilots, not looks

      I think what the narrator of this videoclip review of the Citizen Black Ion-plated Nighthawk Pilot's watch meant to say is that the Nighthawk watch's dial looks a bit too "busy" (i.e., cluttered) with information. So he misused the word ''functionality'', when he probably meant that the watch dial has too much information on it. But there are some Citizen Eco-Drive watches that look way more "cluttered" with information on the watch dials than the classic Nighthawk Pilot's watch. A perfect example of that is the first black ion-plated Satellite Wave watch that Citizen put on the watch market way back in 2011 or 2012.

    • @Romanellochw
      @Romanellochw 3 роки тому +3

      @@michaelbarlow6610 it's designed that way on purpose though. It's a tool watch. A real pilots watch is basically a sliderule on your wrist; designed to calculate speed, fuel burn, distances and other mathematical equations. Its just a little disingenuous to say the looks are a negative when the reviewer is only addressing the looks. Its a very unfair criticism. It would be like me saying an MRI machine is too large. In reality I have no idea how it works and if the size relative to its function is realistic or not.

    • @michaelbarlow6610
      @michaelbarlow6610 3 роки тому

      @@Romanellochw . I am fully aware that Citizen designed the classic Nighthawk Pilot's watch the way they did because, for example, pilots need a fuel consumption calculator and therefore putting it on a watch designed specifically for pilots makes sense. I was merely pointing out that the narrator of this videoclip review of the Citizen Nighthawk watch probably meant that he feels the watch dial has too much information on it. But as I pointed out in my comment, the Nighthawk watch dial is nowhere near as "busy" or "cluttered" with information/features as some other Citizen watches.

    Absolutely LOVE my Nighthawk! Every time I’m around doctors or high paid professionals, it always catches their eyes & they compliment it a lot & can’t believe it’s a Citizen. They say it looks way more expensive than it is.
    Owned mine for 11 years so far & this thing is working just the same as the day I purchased it. Still catching eyes & it’s still a beauty to look at; even if the dial is super busy. I own a Casio Atomic Radio Controlled Watch & this Citizen ticks & keeps time just as accurately as an Atomic Watch does. I highly recommend this time piece for anybody interested! You will not be let down whatsoever..

    I brought a Nighthawk a few years ago. The stem came out after only a year and a half of owing the watch. The watchmaker I used told me that the stem was to short. Even after replacing the crown and stem I still have a problem with the date setting. Another problem is the black pvd coating which started to come off after about a year.

    Owned it. Great looking watch, beautiful blue lume, easy to read hands, great looking applied indices, coolest gmt hands, but... sat on my 6-5/8” wrist bigger than its 42mm due to flat edged case and thick SS band. Rarely wore it, didn’t want to sell it, but had to. If only it was 40mm. My Seiko flightmaster and mini turtle wear as a small 42mm and very comfortable due to rounded bottom of case and the bezels make the dial look smaller too . If you can wear the Nighthawk, for under $200 go for it.

    Hi Jory, I owned 2 versions, one with a silver bracelet and another with a leather strap. I loved both watches and they always got alot of compliments. Then one of the watches developed an issue with the movement. It took Citizen in South Africa 6 months to get the watch repaired... Once I got it back I kept it for a few months eventually selling both to an acquaintance at a small profit as both had been purchased in the Caribbean and came with discounts...

    The version of the Citizen Nighthawk Pilot's Watch that is reviewed in this video is the mesh band version which has 2 things that the black ion-plated, stainless steel BJ7019-62E (and Citizen's Asian watch market version of the BJ7019-62E watch--which I believe has 54E as the last part of the model number) watch unfortunately lacks, which is (1) full-length vividly bright blue-green lume on the watch markers (whereas the stainless steel, metal links band version only has vividly bright blue-green luminescent, square-shaped dots above each marker and (2) the name "Nighthawk" on the watch dial. The black ion-plated, stainless steel metal links band version does have the preferable metal links band and the nice fold-over safety clasp which the mesh band version lacks. The mesh band version also has the minor drawback of white lume on the hour and minute hands instead of the preferable blue-green lume which is found on the hour and minute hands of the stainless steel, metal links band version of the watch.

    This was my first watch and it’s served me well (wearing it now actually). I think it’s a super beautiful timepiece, with thoughtful, distinctive design, and very comfortable to wear. The slide rule is great - love it for quick currency conversions when abroad. Love the easy time zone switching... and love the eco-drive SO MUCH. (I would basically never buy a Citizen that doesn’t have the eco-drive tech.) Agree about the danger of leaving it in storage too long - it took so long for mine to thaw out and charge up enough for normal performance - but you can get around it by just..remembering to wear the damn thing semi-regularly. Biggest disappointment is the crystal - I definitely need to switch that out for a sapphire at some point because it has seen some things. But I love this hardy little beast.

    The Nighthawk has been a watch that has been on my radar yet never on my shortlist due to my preference of chronos & divers for daily wear. Also hurts that I have an Orient Dyno that has a slide rule bezel, so I have that feature covered along with various other watches with second time zones.
    Now, the Navihawk has caught my attention again and it resolves an issue I have with my Seiko Fieldmaster in that you can't read the time in low light without having to tap it on something, so the Citizen's lumed hands would allow quick reading of time while also boosting the digital features as well. Still, it otherwise does the same thing, so, idk, I'll probably add a moonphase first regardless.

    Why not just get a storage solution that keeps you solar watches exposed to anbient light and keep them in a room were the sun comes in or the lights are usually on? Its what I do and the watches never get below medium charge. I've heard that some solar watch batteries/capacitors can be damaged if you let them drain down to dead. Am I wrong about this? Is there a reason you wouldn't want to do that?

Now that I've got solar watches and just got my first Auto I can't go back. 😅 Don't get me wrong I'll never get rid of the "plain" quartz watches I have but autos are cool and solar is just plain dependable especially if you keep them out of a bloody dark and dank watch drawer.😅

    Love the watch. Have had one for about 5 years!
    PS. You could have cleaned the back of that watch before filming it 🤢

    Been wearing this watch since 2008. Wear 24 hours a day and i really hammer this thing being a mechanical engineer. Looking at it now the crystal has got weld splatter on it and marks from grinding sparks. But I LOVE THIS THING no idea why lol. Looking for a new watch Omega or Breitling and trust me i will wear that every day. My wife said there is no way i would not and Shes right. Bet they do not match this Citizen Nighthawk and can see a lot of repair bills in the future. Will never part with the Nighthawk and being an old fart i might take it with me when i pop off. Bet it will still be running.

    I have a question. For many, lume is an issue and can oftentimes be a deal breaker. Since lume is not an issue for me, why don't you just switch to watches with tritium?

    • @markklein8725
      @markklein8725 5 років тому

      Gregory Alonzo: I have a Ball watch with tritium, and I do love it. The problem is that's it a low light. great for movie theaters but nothing much else. There is watch called Reacter that has both super lume and tritium. It's bright for about 20-30 minutes then the tritium tubes kick in for luminosity.

    • @xpusostomos
      @xpusostomos 5 років тому +1

      Tritium is rare, it these days only exists in tubes (which is design limiting), and it's worn out after a dozen or so years.

    I have the Citizen Nighthawk, great watch i love it but....the only thing that annoys me is that the second hand is misaligned..it doesn't hit most of the marks. Greetings from Greece.

    • @michaelbarlow6610

      @George Vlahakis. Citizen watch second hands not consistently landing directly on the watch markers is a flaw of way too many Citizen watches.

    Nighthawks are great. back in 2011, it was the watch that really got me into nice watches. (And yes, it was the black pvd version :) )
    But, what bracelet is that?! That's not the normal citizen nighthawk bracelet... The real one (3-link) is very very good (miles above equal-priced seiko).

    I've had a couple EcoDrives and theyre great - I have a clear top watch box purchased for them, they were always powered up.
    But yeah why mineral?! Sapphire is cheap now - it's on all kinds of entry level watches. Same w/ Hardlex. Just put sapphire on yr watches. Cripes.

      Sapphire shatters easly than mineral crystal although it is more scratch resistant

    • @normanpedersen5454
      @normanpedersen5454 5 років тому +1

      @@sunderwar1044 Yes, true re:shattering. I just know NONE of my Citizens escaped getting scratches on their crystals, no matter how careful I was.
      And so far (knock on wood), no matter how rough I am on them, all my sapphire crystals are immaculate. I didn't understand what the big deal was till I owned a sapphire crystal.

    When talking about the Nighthawk, isn't it more a line than the specific model in the video? do you consider the other watches true 'Nighthawks' too? E.g. the CA0295-58E

    • @michaelbarlow6610
      @michaelbarlow6610 3 роки тому

      @B C. Although this is purely speculation on my part, I would imagine that most Citizen Nighthawk watch devotees consider any watch that Citizen designates as a "Nighthawk" watch is not truly a Nighthawk watch if it lacks (1) the iconic configuration hour and minute hands, (2) the semicircular 24-hour indicator on the left side of the dial, (3) the airplane-configuration pointers, and (4) the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock numerals. For example, Citizen calls the AT4117-56H Promaster radio-control watch a "Nighthawk" watch, but it really is not a Nighthawk watch because it doesn't look anything like the original, iconic Nighthawk Pilot's watch.
