Hey everyone - don't get me wrong from the comments I made in this video.
I love Yngwie and he's a badass, but...I feel he could be a little more honest about his influences, especially now.
He's been on the scene since the early 1980s., so it seems silly to not just completely come out and admit that while he totally studied classical violin music and technique and applied it to the guitar, he also took a number of cues directly from Uli Jon Roth.
I have the same conspiracy theories about Eddie Van Halen and his father.
I feel that Jan Van Halen played a more significant role in Eddie's (and Alex's) musical development than previously admitted or explained. I have a feeling that Jan exposed those brothers to a plethora of hot jazz, classical, bebop, and avant-garde music, and I can almost guarantee that Jan Van Halen knew who Vittorio Camardese was - the famous 1950s nylon-string guitarist that is known as one of the earliest tapping guitarists.
Hell, their dad probably played some gigs with Vittorio.
No hate - just thoughts and feelings.
    : )

Nothing could be further from the truth about Van Halen I completely agree with you David I mentioned to a buddy of mine the video I believe of an Italian guitar player you named who tapped on guitar ... And not to mention the way Van Halen manipulates blues licks and usually starts or ends his phrases on up beats rather than downbeats is very jazz oriented probably from his dad

Well said David,I always wondered if that's why Eddie had a bebop, jazzy feel to a lot of his rhythms as well as leads. I bet Jan exposed the brothers to all of those styles of music. It wasn't just blues licks or rehashed rock riffs Eddie played.

@@juanrajara2887 - I don’t believe he wrote the whole song, including the lead guitar parts when he was 17. Uli’s playing was not that advanced at that time. One listen to the Fly to the Rainbow album will prove that. The painting on the cover of the first Electric Sun is titled "Rising Force". I knew a guy in the 1990s who had a bunch of tapes of teenage Yngwie that were recorded on his 4 track with Yngwie playing all of the instruments and singing. One of the tapes had a killer version of Scorpions' "We'll Burn the Sky" with Yngwie playing Uli's solo perfectly.

@@centaurus5676 you know yngwie is probably my favourite shredder along with the man in my pfp. But I gotta give it to him. The entire "my heroes have been dead for 200 years" act he puts on extremely fucking cringe. I mean it's great and all but he's like 60 now ffs. The edge is too much to handle with Yngwie. He's like a teenager that never grows out of his "I'm not like the other kids" phase. He's a god of the instrument. Sure he might've shaped his style around the classical sound but he's got other heroes too.

    • @Stitsel

@@sasmitroy5480 Yeah....like Blackmore. Anyone who doesn't see it is blind. Sure he took a lot from Uli & all the dead classical composers but his Blackmore fixation/denial is pretty comical. No, they don't play the same, duh. But Yngwie 100% stole his stage moves & mannerisms from Ritchie & anyone who's familiar with old Purple & Rainbow footage will agree. Does that take away anything from Ynwie's abilities...? Not at all, he's a bona fide badass, we all know that. It's just funny when he denies this stuff, or plays ignorant. As far as Uli....he's like the perfect bridge between Blacker's & Yngwie. And this is not to downplay his place in things, or his ability....his whole trip totally stands on it's own. I've met both Yngwie & Uli, and while Yngwie was pretty cool & laid back, he definitely had a "rock star" air about him, and a certain aloofness, whereas Uli is just warm & totally down to earth & just a very humble & nice guy. You just kinda get a mellow old hippy vibe from Uli & he's extremely easygoing & great to talk to, about anything. He treats you like an equal.....whereas with Yngwie, you know who the boss guitar player is in the room. Whatever, I love them both.

I've been a huge fan of Uli's since the early 1980s and I've been fortunate enough to have seen him perform live about 7 or 8 times. For a while, he played B.B. King's in Times Square every year. During one show, while he was touring with Michael Schenker I met him after his set & before Schenker's set. I saw him walking toward me about twenty feet away and no one else noticed him yet. He walked right up to me, said hello & shook my hand. He was the most peaceful person I've ever met. I felt peace emanating from him. He's about my size (5' 10 1/2) but his hands are huge. I wanted to have a conversation with him, but a couple of knuckleheads suddenly bum-rushed him and rudely crowded me out of the way. Naturally, he spoke to them politely. During that show, he didn't have a full band and played mostly classical stuff, but he played 'Sails' and it made my entire body vibrate. He's amazing.

2004 was my last show as I am disabled. And Uli reserved a seat for me. He walked in thru the front door after Michael's set and immediately there was a line on the floor, (He hadn't been to America in 19 years) and I got up sore and yet uplifted, tapped him on the shoulder and said, "Hi Uli, it's Windrose." He had a site and I had sent in a poem and he named the poem and I was like, "You read that?" He asked about the sound, etc. I think all of the guys or most of the guys in the line were there to ask about his guitar, equipment, etc. I just told him that his music lifted me up throughout the good times and the bad.

Seeing him live had been on my list forever, finally saw him on the Scorpions Years Anniversary tour he did some 4-5 years back, small venue, I was at arm's length of him, and after the show he just came down to hang out and chat with us. Part 3 of "Hiroshima" off the Firewind album has to be one of the most poignant instrumentals ever. There's also a brilliant live concert from the mid-80s which has some outstanding parts on show - well worth checking out and there's a representative selection on the YT channel "AxelFlyerV"
Another one worth searching for - again on YT is: Uli Jon Roth - Historic Performances

I'll never forget the first time I got that CD and listened to it. I had been a huge fan of both Roth *and* Vivaldi for many years, but had no idea I was going to love it as much as I did and still do. To this day I have yet to hear anyone at all emulate the violin on a non synth electric guitar so well. Actually, because of the dynamics and feel and the emotive possibilities from that, I've never heard the violin emulated so well on even a synth really. It's still one of my favorite guitar works, right up there with Alan Holdsworths playing as far as sonic achievements go.

Uli Jon Roth is the first guy AFTER Blackmore that actually brought Baroque harmonic progressions and Baroque linear solo vocabulary into hard rock guitar. And he did this with way more technical facility as a soloist than Blackmore, and he utilized Baroque harmonies and scalar material to a far greater degree in his solos and compositions in general than Blackmore. Uli has not received the full credit he deserves with regard to this Baroque vocabulary in hard rock guitar. Keep in mind, Michael Schenker did not begin employing Baroque chord progressions and Baroque scales in his solos to a large degree until the MSG band in 1981. Uli had been doing this since he joined the Scorpions(as far as recording goes) in 1973 and was immediately employing this vocabulary from the very first record he did with them, Fly To The Rainbow in 1974. He needs to be recognized as an innovator of hard rock guitar of the highest order and not some fringe early "shredder" guy. Uli is and always was wayyyyy more than that!!! Not to mention how fantastic of a nylon string classical guitarist he ALWAYS was and is. Almost NONE of his hard rock peers can touch him as a classical guitarist and this should also be mentioned wayyyy more often... UJR, one of the GREATEST hard rock guitarists EVER. If you listed 10 he SHOULD ABSOLUTELY be one of them.....

I think Blackmore in his prime could of figured out pretty well anything. What you have to remember with guys like Page Blackmore is they are not highly educated guitar players. Someone like Uli Roth very educated.

    • @vbassone
      @vbassone 2 роки тому

@@dalesteffens6769 Well, do you know Uli Jon Roth's entire pedagogy intimately? NO, you don't. "Educated" musically is not a bad thing either, and that's assuming as you are that Uli was somehow formally musically "educated." Actually Uli was mostly self taught, so does that satisfy what you're calling "educated?" However one gets to greatness should not diminish that achieved greatness. Uli Jon Roth, GREAT whatever the particular road he took on his musical development.

Uli and Yngwie have known each other since Malmsteen was a teenager. He made contact with Uli when he was still a teenager in Sweden, so Uli knew of Malmsteen LONG before the first Rising Force record. To your point, that makes it even more strange that he didn't OPENLY acknowledge Uli's influence from the very beginning of his star rising. SHOULD HAVE, no bones about it!!!

Thank You for giving Uli the cred he really deserves. Been watching him on stage so many times. First concert I saw was his last concert with Electric Sun in France - 82. Going there from Sweden and even got backstage pass. Two years later I watched him in Sweden for two concerts and also went to Hammersmith London for one gig. I started up a fanpage for him which became his officiel page for some years. Watched the G3 concert in Copenhagen. Now lately I saw his Scorpions revisited tour in Stockholm and Copenhagen. Then he was in Gothenburg for two and three years ago. And saw him both times. He likes Sweden. :-) Now I am going to watch his one man solo tour in two weeks. It will be very exciting. Thanks again, nice to see you playing Uli. I actually think this is the first time I've seen someone breaking down his solo so you're obviously a great player yourself.

Awesome for bringing attention to such a great and underrated guitarist. His work with Scorpions is a treasure trove of guitar god goodness. One of my favorite solos, period, is the one from "Longing For Fire" off 'In Trance'. People knock it(not because it's bad, but he has more famous solos), but it so melodic, it is such a great work. Thank you for recognizing true guitar heroes.

    • @crusheverything4449
      @crusheverything4449 3 роки тому +1

Yngwie definitely took a lot from Uli, but all musicians have their influences, don’t they? Uli is a much more refined and interesting player, IMO. Don’t get me wrong, what Yngwie did can’t be diminished - he’s incredible - but, Uli doesn’t play fast just to show off and his songs and solos have much more diversity and personality, whereas Yngwie repeats himself, ad nauseum, with the blinding speed licks. Speed is only one color on Uli’s pallete, while Yngwie’s style is more monochrome. I think if you paint in one color all the time, it eventually gets boring and repetitive, but if you use the whole color spectrum, the possibilities are endless. When used sparingly, fast playing is more dynamic because it’s contrasted by mid-tempo and slow passages and has a bigger payoff for the listener.

    • @LateNightLessons

Yngwie rarely mentioned Uli in interviews in the early days - I feel he should've mentioned him more often, as much of his style and direction came from a combo of Uli Jon Roth and Ritchie Blackmore.
There's the obvious exceptional violin technique in his playing (which is groundbreakingly impressive), but I feel he's only recently mentioned him more openly because in the early days he only mentioned Paganini, Bach, Blackmore, and Hendrix in those interviews, and owes a lot to Roth's playing style, tone, delivery, and more.

The original school of shred. Haha
Uli Roth is still in his own class.
Marty Friedman obviously admits his influence...
I mean 9:52 is prime example.
I went to a Vinnie Moore clinic sometime in 80's.
Asked him what he thought of Uli...
Hard to remember it exactly, but he basically replied that Yngwie really took alot of his ideas from Uli Roth.

Bravo, Uli's "I'll be there" remains one of my favorite studio solos, with the blending of the legato vibrato noise (which Yngwie seldom attempts) with the arpeggios. Its the non musical sounds Uli really excels at, and blends well, having an tremendous debt to Hendrix. I believe Earthquake is dedicated to the "spirit of Jimi" and you may want to look up the who painted the Electric Sun album covers for another connection.
