I use an inkjet printer and spray it with Krylon UV-Resistant Clear Acrylic coating. It comes in a spray can. It works great. I’ve done this several times in mixed media and have had great success with it!
@@abluebarn if you are using photo paper there is no need to seal before applying, but if you are using ANYTHING else, you will want to seal the TOP side with a light spray of hairspray or fixative found at most hobby stores.
I'm confused, you print on regular copy paper n then what? Spray picture with krylon n then put on wood? For how long before removing picture? Then spray krylon on picture that's adhered to wood to finish? Sorry so many questions! But it sounds like a cheaper way instead of photo paper TIA!
You can also print on tracing paper, rice or mulberry paper, tissue paper, single layer napkins...anything absorbent that will safely go through your printer. You can also print on wax paper (reverse image) and carefully rub transfer onto a project.
The ink tank system appears to be much better than the cartridge system ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxciSwynMJ7PnUvvx11rewiu-yFBkZTl53 and a lot cheaper to run. The machine was easy to set up. A small point but I thought they'd be a USB cable included to help with the set up but there was none. I've been using it now for a few weeks and it seems like a good product and superior to my previous printers which were all troublesome HP machines.
VERY helpful! I have a inkjet printer, I´ve been thinking about getting a laser one, but now when you said that inkjet is better for graphics, I´ll stick to the one I already have :)
Hi, thanks. I found a Hammermill Color copy paper for graphics and color printing. There is a pic of a bird Parrot I think. It is 28lb. With 100% brightness so colors come out great. I have had no problem with bleed. It is sold on Amazon or on line print shop.
So informative! I have printed pictures in a Ryman shop, I suppose they used a laserpaper. I was worried it will bleed but apparently I should be safe ❤
When the paper is thicker, like photo paper, is it possible to lightly sand the edge after printing it? I mean for single paper designs that don't lie next to another piece of photo paper. A light sanding might knock off that thick edge allowing you to smooth it out flat instead of using borders. I think I will try that. Even if it smears a little, maybe it could incorporate into the artwork. PS. I would use an archival quality acrylic spray over the raw paper to seal it. I'm an artist and I use that over my pen and ink designs to keep them from being destroyed if a drop of water falls on them. The one I use is called "Workable Fixatif" by the company that produces it. It is acid free too so that your designs will not get darker over time.
If you want to make it not as thick and the edges more workable there are two things that you can do. Number one get some tape and apply it to the back side of your paper to pull off some of the bulk of the paper and make it thinner secondly instead of cutting your edges tear the edges so that it's easier to blend with paint
Hair spray isn't a great sealer but subbing out hairspray for Luke, any clear top coat is gr8. A super light layer of modern podge also seals well but there's a smidgen of fading.
Forgot to say, I have a bottle inkjet. It’s a little workhorse so ink lasts a very long time. I sometimes use Krylon Workable Fixit for charcoal and chalk art on my reg printout.
I have a Brother laser printer and images come out crystal clear, but I do wonder how I'd run a napkin or rice paper through it. Do you know how to do that? Obviously, I can't just run a napkin or thin rice paper through, so would you recommend attaching it to something more sturdy? And how would you do that? :-) Thanks for another informative video! I used to have a nice little HP Inkjet printer, but it actually did not print images out very well. Of course it was the bottom of the line HP and very inexpensive! LOL
I was told yo stick the napkin to freezer paper. Cut the freezer paper and opened up napkin to a4 and iron the napkin to the freezer paper. Iron on the shiney side Then run the whole thing through your printer. It's a bit hit and miss but it works most of the time and means you can put any image onto a napkin. I wouldnt try it on a new printer though just incase it ruins it
I print on rice paper and tissue on my inkjet, simply lay your paper over a typical A4 paper. Flip it over and tape it. Run through printer normally. Perfect. Hope this helps
I have seen both methods used successfully but for anyone interested i can run rice paper and tissue paper as well as 300gsm card through my epson ecotank 7750 with no issues however I have only just began to try decoupage and have several methods to try including 'baking' the print in a oven of 175-200° for around 10 mins I think. As well as trying a sealer meant for waterbased products ie ranger matt medium/glue and ceramacoat varnish that I already have. Thank you for your time x
Very helpful as always. They're right, inkjet will give better quality print outs but my laser printer prints out waterslides in great quality...without the need for spray sealing images. They sent me a print out sample...have they offered that to you? xxx
Thank you! No, they didn’t offer that but to be fair I didn’t ask either 😄 I have figured out which one I want either way, just waiting for it to come in stock now 😄
I use The Digital Collage Club a lot, there’s a link in my bio. I also used to use Adobe Stock Photos but that one is way more expensive, also Etsy has a lot of downloadables ☺️
At work we have laserprinters and print geographical maps on it which look just fine. I mean really good. So i guess they dont really know what they are talking about. Just saving. Maybe the home version isnt that good.

Yes, Hairspray works! I spray both sides of psper and leave to dry and use a few hours later.
100% works
Oh thank you so much for the info, I’m gonna have to try it out! 😄
Indeed.
Have you tried it ? And does it work on napkins too or not ?
I tried using hairspray on tissue and tracing paper, left them to dry 2 days, still had a bit of bleeding when doing decoupage.
Very true! The cheapest hair spray will set the ink. I have done it and it works!

Hey Nice video/info.
Upon doing decoupage on MDF what is its durability? Can it withstand water ? Can it withstand rugged use of furniture ?
You need to seal it several times, sanding between coats and it can handle a lot. My coasters can take the heat, cold, an wetness from condensation.
