  • A friend bid on three broken Milwaukee SDS drills, and won all of them!
    They all appear dead, let's take them apart see if we can diagnose the problem and hopefully repair them.

    BTW ... I find fluxing and soldering both board and new part always has best results.

    Your buddy is lucky he has you for repairing the units he bids on and you fixed two out of three unit. He has a spare unit for spare parts for the other two. Good work mate.👍👍

    I find a large chisel tip works well to heat and remove the mosfets and to install the new ones. I also dab some solder paste on the pads sit the mosfets on and sit the chisel tip on top, legs first then big pad.
    If you feel like digging the resin goup out of the controler on number 3 there may be a fuse resistor, there are in recip saws and high impact wrenchs.

      I had been thinking of possibly doing a re-visit on the drill. I haven't had time to do any repair videos the last week as had the body off the wifes landrover. Replaced both turbos still having issues...

      @@BuyitFixit the gen 1 csx recip saws have an almost identical stator and they have a 22ohm (off the top of my head) fuse resistor on the control board. I'd hazard a guess the drill does to.

    Great detail on highly skilled electronic fixes.
    Would love to see similar fixes on Makita contractor tools (ie: SDS MAX corded, 7 1/4in circular saw, sawsall)

      Thanks, the main reason they are all pretty much Milwaukee is because I was buying them for myself. I've done a Bosch grinder and reciprocating saw, and someone recently asked me to look at a Dewalt 4 way charger (which I'm sure will be in a video at some point).

    I just fixed my milwaukee chpxi thanks to you.
    I can't describe my happiness,
    I wish you all the best
    My milwaukee broke down after just mby 20 - 30 holes
    it was brand new
    One of mosfets was blown

    Do you think the problem stems from insufficient cooling of those mosfets or under-rated for the task at hand?
    The SDS drills when used as a power chisel is a high duration task. Not too kind on those mosfets

    • @BuyitFixit
      @BuyitFixit  2 роки тому +1

      I think possibly if the drill jams up and people are keep trying to make it go to get the drill bit out, that would put strain on them and cause them to blow. I'm not 100% though.

    Great fix on 2, a shame about the 3rd one being unservicable... you can't win them all I guess, fixing central heating PCB control boards would be a great one as they are expensive to replace and normaly only the caps, resistors, diodes and dry joints are the failure points due to vibration.

    • @BuyitFixit
      @BuyitFixit  8 місяців тому

      Thanks, yes the main IC is programmed and unfortunately you can't buy them as it's a part TI only supplies under a NDA. Regarding the boiler boards, I know a couple of engineers who service boilers and I could get a supply of broken boards, the problem is I have no means to test them. We also have no gas in our area only oil boilers.

      @@BuyitFixit ah ok, not really an option then, never mind, I have bought a tend T35 vacuum non working on the back of your videos to have a go myself. I'm an engineer by trade but left the in depth electronics behind for more cnc related items, 3 phase motors, servo motors and drives a while ago. Watching your videos has made me want to look at it again in depth, so thanks for that, it is appreciated Mick

All covered in potting compound which is a pain 😪 just pissed off the replacment electronics are just under the cost of a new one!!! And the rest of its like new, becuase it was not registored no warranty i can claim im at a loss what to do next

      I have a couple I've looked at. A 9" I think and the smaller standard side. The larger the main ic is blown and it's a custom part. The smaller one I could possibly have fixed as it was one of the hall effect sensors had worn through due to debris in the stator but I thought it was going to be too much trouble and I already have 3 of them. They don't seen very repairable unfortunately.

    Update on my mission with filling the cylinder.
    Firstly Milwaukee wont reply on correct psi. So we assume 130.
    Tyre and scuba shops will not fill as there is no data on cylinder.
    I tried a friend's air rifle pump and a shadler valve adaptor with a standard pump. Neither worked for me. I believe issue is that the valve pin in the cylinder need pushing in to add air. Neither connector I used had that. Any suggestions would help.

    hi I have the same drill, can you give me some indication sometimes when drilling it makeing some noise like the gear is not connected, then sometimes its ok? any idea what's up with it, or is it the gearbox had its time? thanks

    • @BuyitFixit
      @BuyitFixit  2 роки тому +1

      From what you said it sounds more like a mechanical problem. I think when I looked on the Milwaukee site you could buy gears and parts separately so it may still be worth repairing.

    Milwaukees Controller PCB-on-Stator design is nonsense. Bare Mosfets zero cooling and exposed to the elements. Also makes the electronics more complex.
    Most other brands have one big potted controller with an aluminium case for heat dissipation tucked in the housing somewhere away from the already heat producing motor.

    • @BuyitFixit
      @BuyitFixit  3 місяці тому

      Good point. It does have a fairly large aluminium block where the board screws on to, but I didn't think about the motor itself also producing heat when it is under load.

    Liquid nitrogen will get that rubber off

    • @BuyitFixit
      @BuyitFixit  Рік тому

      Thanks for that👍I'm not sure how readily available liquid nitrogen is in the UK. Even dry ice isn't that common. I managed to remove it with some heat from the rework station and picking at it, it does get it off eventually albeit a bit time consuming.
