I was fortunate enough to have Tony Bennett as a customer in a bookstore I was managing in NYC. He was as such a nice person and so appreciative of being given good customer service. Not only was he my favorite male vocalist, he was my favorite customer. Thank you, Fil.

I was priveledged to see him perform at the 75th anniversary of the Paramount Theater in Seattle. I went on a whim and sat back in the cheap seats, all the way against the back wall. Halfway through the show he had them turn off his mic to demonstrate the gorgeous acoustics of the hall. He blew me away. Even from as far away as I was, his charm, charisma and warmth took hold of me. You could tell how much he loved the songs, loved performing, and loved the audience, and we all loved him right back. I can count on the fingers of one hand the performers I've seen with that sort of stage presence. And that voice! His characteristic rasp always fools me (even though I know better) into thinking he won't hit those high notes. But he ALWAYS does, and every single time it gives me a thrill, a joyous surprise that I get from very few other singers. What a great entertainer, and from all accounts, a real mensch, and what a wonderful legacy of art and love. Thanks for the video, Fil!

Certain male singers in this genre stand out for me by virtue of their long careers, underpinned by strong vocal techniques - Sinatra, Robert Goulet, Como, Jack Jones, Andy Williams to name a few. Tony Bennett was right up there with the very best. Saw him first in 1977 when he was touring with the Syd Lawrence Orchestra and then many times over the following couple of decades. He always put on a wonderful performance, backed by the very best musicians in the business. Had the good fortune to meet him on a couple of occasions too. You are right about his sons being the major factor in turning the tide and bringing him in front of new, younger audiences Fil. Thanks for this analysis - it provided a fascinating insight into a masterful vocalist...may he rest in peace.

Great! Bennet was not on my hot playlist in the late 70s, but had the good luck to meet him briefly backstage prior to a concert in Ontario. He was an authentic, charming man who chatted easily despite confessing he was ‘terrified’ because that was the FIRST time he had gone onstage without an opening act! His concert was amazing. I was there with my friend who had been given the tickets by her brother (Lightfoot), and she was over the moon…Bennet was her favourite and I’m so happy to have had the great luck to meet and hear him.

"The Shadow of Your Smile" and "Lost in The Stars" -- two of my favourites by Mr. Bennett. Oh yeah, his "signature song" ("I Left My Heart in San Francisco") is brilliant -- a classic among classics. I had the pleasure of hearing Mr. Bennett sing in NYC before Christmas 1979. From his days as a singing waiter, to "Rags to Riches" (a long-running hit on America's "Your Hit Parade,") to his first performance on the Ed Sullivan Show, to his last live performance, Tony Bennett shone like a brilliant star whose light will never be extinguished. Mr. Bennett not only sang from his diaphragm, but he also sang with everything in his heart and soul. Countless thanks, FIL. God keep you!

Thank you so much for this tribute to a true show business legend. He was someone that I'd always been aware of, and just assumed that he'd been performing steadily since the 50's. I didn't realize that he'd had substance abuse and financial problems that could have spelled the end of his career. I'm glad that he got the help he needed, and with the assistance of his son, was able to mount such an impressive comeback at a time when his music would have been considered out of fashion.
More sad news...it was just announced a little while ago that Sinéad O'Connor has passed away at 56. Although she courted controversy at several points in her career, she was a beautiful and unique singer. She was able to cover a Prince song, and not only make it truly her own, but make it her signature song. I know you're very busy at the moment, but hopefully you'll have the time to make a tribute video for her at some point. If not, perhaps you could do a short recap of her career and achievements at the beginning of Saturday's LS. ❤️🇨🇦

I’ve heard this man from the cradle to present. Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra were played in our house before I was even born. I never remember them not being there.
I’m of the rock ‘n’ roll generation, but I love music from my parents era also.
I saw Tony Bennett 6 times over the years, and he never disappointed.
When he played with the trio, he had a bit where he would lay the microphone down on the stool, and just belt out to the audience with no microphone. His power and presence were unbelievable. And his range was superb. Songs like Maybe this time, and When do the bells ring for me? are examples of his great phrasing and breath control. He sang some very long phrases on a single breath. Don’t know how he did it.
I can’t believe he’s 88 years old in this video. He’s still got the range and power at that age. I absolutely loved this guy. RIP Tony and thank you Fil for acknowledging another great performer.

He may be the last person that can or did sing the songs that was of an era that may now be setting in the sunset. I have been amazed by the artist from what you talked about invasion of the Brits in the 60s, which I really loved to listen to now in their 70s to about 80s putting events out to 2023. Yet, here was Mr. Tony in his late 80s and early 90s wanting to sing can could. I did not know about all of his successes with MTV or with Madame Gaga.
All I know is that I grew up with Tony Bennet in the 1960s and 1970s but he was like one of those old crooners. And I'd listen to his songs, and then I'd say, yup, an old crooner, but God what a voice.
This performance was incroyable. Absolutely incredible. And it showed, Stevie was gobsmacked. He wrote this as an upbeat song, sang it that way. But Tony made it his song in front of the songwriter. Amazing.
Your talent has always been doing eulogy videos. This was one of your best. Sadly, but happily.

For years I kicked off autumn by playing Mr. Bennett singing "Autumn Leaves. " However this year I've passed on this ritual. But on the flip, I was fortunate enough to see him perform live on a couple of occasions. Mr. Bennett was well in his 80's and his performances were incredible. Not only could he hit the notes but held them impeccably. The world is a sadder place without him.

Tony’s voice at 88 was simply amazing. His first album with Lady Gaga showed the best of both singers. I did not know of his drug addiction, but I’m glad he was able to overcome it. Thanks, Fil, for your detailed analysis!

Wow, Fil, you are so great at this! The explanations and demonstrations! I'd already commented, but my phone is acting up, (still!) and may have lost it. I always thought Tony Bennet was one of the greatest of the 'crooners'! This, at 88, proves it. And, a true master, he welcomed new artists and different styles! A true love of craft. Which I see in you, also! You could have gotten by on looks alone, but nope. You honed skill and knowledge. Again, proof that it will be lifelong with you, also. 👍💖💙🥰✌

I am so happy that you did this video...Thank you a million..!! I am 72 and Tony Bennett has been my favorite male singer for over 50 years. I have told many people that If I could have chosen any male singer to be able to sing like, it would have been Tony.
But at 88 and still have the range and control of a much younger man....astounding...!!

Wow what a spectacular performance this was by the great Tony Bennett! The man could sing anything. At the end of the song, I could not help but want to say "And there you definitely have it" Thank you so much for sharing this Fil ps I did not realize he was a great painter as well.

I was one of those people who first got exposed to Tony Bennett through MTV, David Letterman and the Simpsons. I think Tony Bennett was the first celebrity guest to play themselves on the Simpsons (the first of many!), and I think it was in the second season. He just had such an air of coolness about him, and this willingness to do these things and just be who he is, was really appealing. I remember the video for Steppin Out With My Baby on MTV, there is just something so cool about being true to yourself and not trying to "fit in". Reminds me of someone else, Fil! ☺ Very nice analysis and tribute.
