- Anandi Devi is an old widow who lives in a village. One day, she is visited by a distant relative, Arun Gupta, who persuades her to live in town with him, his wife Lata, and a small child. She later realizes that they were looking for a maid, which results in her expulsion from the house and befriending a child beggar who takes her to his dilapidated home. Being good-natured and caring, she slowly earns the title of "Nani Ma" among groups of youths led by Shyam and Chhenu, who were in a constant fight with each other. The movie ends with her death from accidental gunfire in one such response.

What a classic movie! I am seeing it after nearly 50 years. Last saw it in a theatre while at school. The situation in 2021 is not much different than that of 1971. Unemployment, youth unrest, election clashes... same issues. The masterly performance of Meena Kumari ji shall forever be etched in my mind. And of course, good performances by Vinod'Vinod Khanna, Shatrughan Sinha, Asrani, Dinesh Thakur and the rest. But the film belonged to the one and only Meena Kumari ji. May her soul rest in peace.

I find no difference even today. In fact it has become even worst. No jobs, just 5% of the population enjoying the benifits of the so called development. Our ranking in the World Hunger lndex and Human Developement lndex falling every year but still we pretend that we are developing. I was born in 1948 , so l have seen the 60s, 70s , 80s as well as the present and l find absolutely no difference on the hardship faced by the people of this country. In fact it has deteriorated. There is only some cosmetic changes which we try to highlight and pretend that things are better.

This movie is a direct copy paste of the 1968 Bengali Movie Aponjon which was written and directed by one of the greatest Bengali directors Tapan Sinha. The Bengali version got the National Award for best film and Chaya Devi who portreyed the character of Meena Kumari got the National best supporting actress award. 90% of Gulzars early works are copies of Bengali movies.
@@damodaran2629 this. Not many people in North India are aware of this. Gulzar borrowed a lot from Bangla cinema.
@@damodaran2629 Tapan Sinha's masterpiece was also borrowed from a story by Inder Mitra. Further, Gulzar was invited by Tapan Sinha himself to make a Hindi remake once the Bengali film turned out successful commercially as well as critically. On top of that, Gulzar fought quite hard to cast Chhaya Devi in the lead role too but her discomfort with Hindi-Urdu dialect for the film led to Meena Kumari being chosen despite her health issues. There is absolutely no denial that Bengali cinema, theatre & literature was the leading light for all of India till several decades owing to a great heritage & culture if celebrating good art.
However, your comment sounded more like a boast & taking credit away from Gulzar who worked hard on the new climax, lyrics & dialogues while managing a rookie set of actors (all this on his own debut as a director). We could surely do better by taking pride & respecting all our yesteryear legends than getting into petty arguments like this. This story is not written by Gulzar. This movie is a direct frame by frame copy of Aponjon which was a Bengali movie made in 1968 and was written and directed by the great Bengali Director Tapan Sinha and this Bengali film had also won the National Award for best film in that year. Gulzar was a great copy master. In fact 90%of all early Gulzar films were direct copies of Bengali films. If lndia was America or any other civilized country Gulzar would have been arrested and banned from making films for his plagiarism . But in lndia everything goes.
@@damodaran2629 The story writer's name in this film is Indra mitra(based on)..it has followed the bengali script but direction is direction....in the hindi version the director's job is done by Mr.Gulzar which is not very easy.
