When teaching history, you have to teach the good, the bad, and the ugly. Many stateman like Sam Huston were given Empresarios titles, rights to develop land and a lot of special treatments in Tejas. But there were requirements to be meet 1. Learn Spanish 2. Become Catholic 3. Pay local and Impuestos Federales or taxes. Even when slavery was illegal in Mexico some southerner plantation owners were given special permits to have their slaves on plantations. They were guest in Mexico territory. Santa Anna was enforcing the law. They were given several chances to leave the Alamo. But they refused. As an Officer you need to know when to surrender under a greatly force to ensure the safe been of the soldiers under your command and know when to battle and when to surrender. Now if a bunch of Chinese take a hill, fortified it, and rise the Chinese flag in the middle of Mississippi and claim themselves a free Chinese republic what you think will happen. People like Huston didn't want to learn Spanish, be catholic or pay any taxes without representation. Houston’s arrival in Texas coincided with the heated contest between settlers and the Mexican government for control of the area. He established a home there by 1833, and he quickly emerged as one of the settlers’ main leaders. When they rose in rebellion against Mexico in November 1835, he was chosen commander in chief of their army. For me it was the 1 percent convincing the 99 percent to keep their power. It never was never about freedom.
Don't forget to mention that Davy Crockett surrendered to Mexican forces only to be executed moments later. Or that Travis committed suicide at the north wall, when he saw all was lost and Bowie was killed on his death cot on that Sunday chilly morn! and let's not forget that over 100 Alamo defenders jumped the east walls of the Alamo only to be cut down by General Sesma's cavalry during the battle!
