I would highly recommend Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun. It's easily my favorite sci-fi book and pretty unique in its presentation. Definitely requires a reread or two, though.

If I remember next time I'm looking for a book, I'll look into it a bit.

Is it Bisfrog or Frogsnap? I must know. Either way hope recovery has been smooth since the surgery!

It's Bisfrog, has been since the early days.

It's been very boring, mostly. Always little inconveniences, but not huge deals. I'm not quite recovered yet, but I should be more than halfway there.

Honestly, I think the Dark Forest Theory is, well, kinda illogical.
It is really simple when you think about it for a bit. Let's say you are traveling through space, and you encounter another starship from a species you have not encountered before. If you follow the Dark Forest theory, you need to attack immediately and destroy them before they destroy you. There is just one *major* flaw with that: You have no way of knowing how powerful the other side is, you do not know their capabilities. And the opposite is also true, they do not know your capabilities either. Thus the logical thing to do is to be peaceful. If you attack a foe that is more powerful than you are, you've doomed your entire species, and they have the same dilemma. Peaceful contact is the way to go. The universe is effectively infinite and has infinite resources (and recent research seems to indicate that the observable universe, which incidentally is to large compared to its age, is only a tiny part of the universe as a whole.), so there isn't really that much competition for resources.

I think one idea is that eventually it'll get there anyway based on human nature, but that presumes that anything else out there has the same inclinations for conquer and elevating disagreements to war. I'm not going to tell you I think it should be shoot first and ask questions later, but I at least understand the thought that it's an inevitability when humans are put into the situation.

@@bisnap I'd agree if it weren't for the simple fact that as a species we are slowly moving away from violent conflict, there are fewer wars today than there were just a few decades ago, and the average per decade is continuing to decrease. The main issue that leads to conflict for humans is lack of resources. There is a finite amount on resources on Earth, and some of them, such as Oil, are running out. Once we solve nuclear fusion (and we are closing in on that one), and start mining asteroids for metals and other minerals, the amount of human conflicts should decline further.
