World's Loudest Woodpecker Drumming - Mini Documentary

  • World's Loudest Woodpecker Drumming and Pecking! Northern Flickers use real man-made steel drums - metal chimney caps - that makes them intelligent "tool-users" and likely among the loudest woodpecker drummers in the world. But loud doesn't begin to describe what the 15-minute long drumming and calling sessions sound like inside the house whose chimney top is used as a drum. Enjoy this short documentary and imagine what this sounds like at the break of dawn as a male Northern Flicker defends his territory, mate and nest box!

Bastids! These things are notorious around here for doing this exact thing. They sound like a burst from the 37mm auto canon in the nose of an A-10 Warthog ground attack plane. One came down the chimney once and was trapped in the wood stove. We just had a roof vent repaired to prevent this! We were convinced it was a problem with the HVAC (it sounded so regular, and was coming from the HVAC duct). But it was just an amorous woodpecker trying to attract a mate. He would keep it up for half an hour at a time, often at 6 in the morning! So glad we have now woopecker-proofed the vents. :D

So it's just territorial display? Happy to find this. This morning, in my living room around 8 am, I heard just this appalling noise, went outside, and saw a woodpecker fly away. Was hoping it wasn't being destructive. I can take a little noise, as long as there's no house destruction (the house across from me is the probable nesting zone--owner complains of hole drilled under roof with nest in it).

We have flickers here (yellow-shafted) here in northeastern SD. I even bought and hung a nice loud metal cake tin and hung it outside in hopes of hearing a similar concert, but alas, they ignored the opportunity this year. I'll try it again in another location next year. I suppose I should admit my ulterior motive of annoying a neighbor who, um, "savors" revving loud engines 24/7.

  • @treewalker1070

My parents had a house with a chimney like this that made flicker drumming boom through the entire house. It terrified their dog, much worse than Fourth of July fireworks ever did. Their dog (a pretty big dog) would be shaking and vainly trying to hide throughout the flicker mating season.
It happens on my woodstove chimney too, but I enjoy it.

    Great capture and presentation! ✔
I would add that Yellow-Bellied Sapsuckers are also well known for doing territorial drumming on human-produced materials for amplification, making them exceptionally loud drummers. They are even known to pick favorite street signs for pounding on, as well as steel roofs, chimneys, and other metal surfaces (there is a video here on UA-cam of one drumming on a Barbecue). I have a Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker that is drumming nearly every morning on what I suspect to be a metal portion of the neighbors' roof - the Morse code-like tapping echoes loudly throughout the whole area. I had no idea that Northern Flickers do this too, so apparently I have just learned something new here! Thanks for sharing. :) Those woodpeckers sure are smart little fellas. Gotta love 'em.

My flickers like to pound the heck out of the light pole behind my house. And my neighbor's cedar tree. It looks like it was attacked by a maniac with a power drill. I had a downy woodpecker that would wake my every morning with his songs of luv on large hollow bamboo stalks that leaned on the fence in my neighbor's yard, going up and down the stalk for maximum variation, tone, and volume. At 6 a.m.. I called him "Robert Downey, Jr." - and also, my "morning headache". Thank goodness they have all ignored the metal roof cladding on my garage.

I was JUST woken up to this sound..again!! (Although it's been awhile) I bought my ex bf's condo almost 5 yrs ago and he didn't tell me that it came with flickers!!! Or an early morning alarm system!!! (I guess they weren't an issue then because I even asked him about it and he had no idea what I was talking about) For the longest time, neither did I! When I was first awoken to this sound, it was coming from my gas fireplace...I thought I had a serious gas problem (well not me but my fireplace) What if it blew up?! I had no idea how to describe the noise to the Property Manager! And if I asked them to send someone to investigate, the noise, being inconsistent, may not occur. Some days, the noise traveled....from the fireplace to my 2nd bedroom and then to underneath the bathroom floor/toilet. But most commonly; the fireplace!!! I didn't know what to do. Days of silence could go by and finally another rude awakening...coming from my fireplace! So I grabbed my camera and sat patiently waiting for the drumming to begin so I could record it and upload it to UA-cam. Then when I emailed the Property Manager, I could include a link so they could hear what I was talking about and not think I was crazy! But even still, they didn't know what it was and said they'd have to send someone to investigate (which they never did). The noise dwindled to a rare occurrence and even to the point of not hearing it at all for a couple years and my building was still standing so for the most part, I let it go! Until, I was chatting with a friend about a year ago. I don't know how the conversation came up but I told him my fireplace story; waking up to hear this mysterious, annoying and worrisome noise coming from my fireplace and sometimes from the plumbing under my toilet. He described the sound to me, did his best imitation and confidently told me that it was a FLICKER!! I went home to search the internet (specifically UA-cam! I knew he was a smart guy but I needed confirmation. And he was right! It was a FLICKER!!!! A F*ucking Flicker!!! (or as I sometimes call them: Flicking F*ckers!!! Now that I know what it is and that my gas fireplace isn't going to blow up, I can sleep at night....mornings are another thing!!!

These guys are incredible with their choices of places to make noise. I'm envious of the birds down under, (especially parrot species) but we do have our own uniquely special birds up here.

Female mallard ducks with their rapid-fire "qwack-whack-whack-whack-whack" can be pretty loud.

Is that song from Australia, too?
"kookaburra sits on the old gum tree,
eating all the gumdrops he can see.
      Laugh, Kookaburra
      Laugh, Kookaburra
      Gay your life must be."
Next verse ends "Leave some there for me"

😂😂 reminds me of some feathered neighbors i used to have. There was a mockingbird pair that used to nest in the bottlebrush tree by my window. The female would sing one version of their song quietly during the day, and the male would belt a slightly differebt version of the song LOUDLY at random times in the evening and night. Unfortunately the song included part of a car alarm. 😂😂 Beautiful birds though!

I have a woodpecker right outside my bedroom window of my apartment. Little budy likes to drum on the exhaust vent to wake me up every morning at about the same time as my alarm. Unlike my alarm though, you cant turn him off on the weekends 😒

Happy to find this vid so I can show my fam what I was hearing, and if they ever hear it know what it is and not to be afraid.
-OMG this just happened to me last week! The noise woke me out of my sleep. It was as loud as in the video. As I marched upstairs 🤬 to see what the commotion was all about, when I looked out the window there were 2 of them. 1 on the chimney cap going to town pecking away. The other comfortably laying on the top ledge of the chimney just chillin’.
-I pulled up the blind and banged on the window and the one pecking flew away. When I raised the window I guess the sound scared the other one and it too flew away.

I had the exact same thing happen on a exhaust stack for the water heater located next to my bedroom. To say I was startled would be an understatement. Every morning, two hours before I had to get up for work it went on. I eventually put a coiled rubber rattle snake on the stack. Fast forward to years later I had a severe storm and a insurance adjuster went up on the roof. He went up the ladder and came running back down. In the end he thought it was funny and I explained to him why it was up there and I had honestly forgot it was.
