She passed away within the year after this recording, she never received any recognition until years after her passing. This 2 night small club gig recording is the only live video of her performing this version.
Totally agreed, but have you heard her sing "Blues in the Night"? Holy cow... if you want to hear her vocal range, and in a completely different style, check that one out. I already knew she was incredibly talented, but this song shows just how versatile she was too. If you search for it here on YT, listen to the one that looks like an album cover with her sitting in a chair, guitar in hand, looking out the window.
I'm just blown away by the late Eva's incredible cover of this iconic song from Wizard of Oz, originally sung by Judy Garland, and I believe if Judy had heard Eva's version, she'd have been blown away by it too. God rest both angels. 💔 💔
We are so lucky to have this recording, Eva was a wonderful singer lost to cancer far too soon. She paid for this recording out of her own pocket to be done over 2 nights but the 1st night's recordings had a bad buzz and were unusable. Cover charge to see her back then most nights was $3. Wow! Check out her cover of Sting's 'Fields of Gold' , when Sting heard it he changed how he preformed the song to her arrangement, high praise indeed!
She had begun to collaborate with another DC Icon - Chuck Brown - the Godfather of Go-go. It was a great music collaboration - you might want to look up.
I am one if the ones who asked you to comment. Thank you so much for sharing. She was a true original. Please check out more of her covers at Blues Alley. She was truly a generational talent. Passed from melanoma cancer at age 33 in 1996 exactly 10 months after her sets at Blues Alley. She also sang blues and jazz like Stormy Monday etc. Thanks again.
She was truly gifted and wrote this arrangement. She had her own style and sang with some of the best jazz artists of our time. My personal favorites of hers are, "Imagine" and "What a Wonderful World". Wonderful World was the very last song she performed about a week before she passed. Even if you don't react to them, they are worth the time to listen to them. Thank you so much for everything you do! I'll keep watching when I'm not working!
She was a phenomenal musician. She was one of those rare artists who can genuinely evoke such deep emotion through song. Her cover of Fields of Gold is incredible as well. Thanks for your reaction ♥️
New sub! Great reaction! Spot on with the difficulty of them softer notes and she sounds so beautiful. Anything from this set is worth a reaction. People Get Ready is a personal fave, such soul
I remember seeing this when the BBC music show Top of the Pops screened it. My dad was still with us then and we watched it together both silently weeping by the end. Beautiful. 'Fields of Gold' by her is also stunning.
Eva Cassidy was so incredible what a voice and talent. It was such a tragedy and loss to the world when she died of cancer at only 33 years old in 1996, but her music will forever live on. Some other Eva Cassidy recommendations are Danny Boy, Time After Time, Fields Of Gold, Autumn Leaves, What A Wonderful World, Songbird. Thank you for your reaction.
That was such a beautiful rendition of this song. So sad that she is no longer with us. She died at only 33 years of age. I also love the version by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole. Sadly he also died young at 38 years of age. At least we have their music left as a legacy.
Eva had such a gift to cover a song and make it so uniquely her. Her haunting arrangements and beautiful voice are timeless. So glad you did this one Shon. My favorite of hers is know you by heart with autumn leaves a very close 2nd. Still love you Shon ❤
🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦 R I P ,she dies too young from skin cancer My favorite Eva Cassady Song is 🎶 oh,had I a golden thread 🎵🎶 Ps:Only an audio version But what a song ❤❤❤❤ Also 🎵 stormy Monday 🎶 Live from the same stage 👌👍🏼 Keep the good work my friend 👍🏼👏👌
Very different genre but I would love to see you react to Joan Armatrading. Great singer, guitarist and songwriter. Like Eva, under the radar of many although at least one of her songs - Love and Affection - became a hit
She died from melanoma -skin cancer. So sad. From what I understand, she had a suspicious spot like a mole that was malignant. Unfortunately she missed an appointment with the doctor and the cancer spread throughout her body. Yes this recording was close to her passing. I believe she didn’t think it was good because she was playing while on medication. Please everyone take care of your health. Watch your skin too. And to cancer I have nothing nice to say to you. Eva rest with the 👼 angels. Thank you for your gift! 💝
Great reaction man! Please check out more from her - one of the best ever (even if gone too soon). 😍 Everything I have heard is great or fantastic! Try "Fields of Gold" next.

RIP Eva Cassidy. Gone too soon.
I went to high school with Eva. She was magical to listen to live. Her live at Blues Alley in DC? Amazing

And also notice what an impeccable guitarist she is as well. Easy to overlook this since her voice and artistry is so remarkable.

Amazing how one woman and one guitar can hit so many feels.
Beautiful, I am tearing up…never heard this before, but OMG….lovely and different than Judy Garland’s version.

Beautiful voice. She does a beautiful cover of Fields Of Gold by Sting. Please react to that one ❤
If you continue reacting to Eva, could you check out “Nightbird”? There are so few reactions to that song and it is just stunning.
Eva lets it RIP on Blues in the Night!
Chills, not tears from Eva with that song!

K.T. OLSEN IS FABULOUS!
This is a great song I think you should react to Rick Springfields Jesse’s girl it’s a great 80’s rock “n” roll song I think you will be surprised
❤
Yo dude, you have to do a reaction to Jodeci singing “lately” live on mtv unplugged. Always one of my favorite performances.
The dreds look good on you, Shon. Eva is a master of phrasing, on a par with Frank Sinatra.
How have you not reacted to rage against the machine? No dis to muh girl. I love this song. Check em out tho
Listen to more of her. She never made it big till after she passed due to breast cancer.
It was a melanoma, skin cancer.
