It's Jim Steinman, who wrote and produced Meat Loaf's greatest work. In fact, Steinman wrote this with Meat Loaf in mind, but it ended up with Tyler doing it. And boy was that fortunate. The song was #1 for 12 weeks, and won multiple Grammies. Totally epic.
And Jim Steinman had another song at #2 on the charts at the same time (Air Supply's "Making Love Out of Nothing At All"). The only songwriter to have songs at #1 and #2 at the same time with different artists.
It was only #1 (in America) for 4 weeks. It missed out on the Grammy for Bonnie herself though, losing to Irene Cara (Flashdance), and did not win any Grammys for Steinman
Bonnie Tyler is a Welsh singer who is known for her distinctive husky voice. "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" was her biggest hit in 1983. She had other hits such as "It's A Heartache", "Lost In France", "More Than A Lover", "Holding Out For A Hero", "Bitterblue" etc.
This song is in my playlist . She does not fail! She is a vocal Powerhouse and in my personal opinion there are very few artists / musicians that are in Bonnie's league . Thank you for your reactions and comments ....you are exactly right about how she played with the highs and low tones in this song at just the right time . Kim Carne's is another female singer that has that raspy sound in her voice Kim sings many songs but her song Betty Davis Eyes is one of her most popular ....that and I'll be here where the heart is ....that song is actually in a movie soundtrack ❤ When you get a chance try Shania Twain's song : God Bless The Child ( their is a Childers choir that does back up for her in that song . Hope you are having a great Monday .
You know why you love this? Because as others have stated Jim Steinman wrote it. I watched your Meatloaf reaction and knew you would love this, as most of did waaaaay back in the day. BTW Im 56 and an old metalhead. Loved waiting for this song at the High School dances and of course the 7min last make out song of the night..... Stairway to Heaven. Dude, love your vibe and channel. Keep it up.....(That's what she said...LOL)
Rory Dodd is the male vocalist in this…That husky grit and rasp is what we all love most about Bonnie Tyler, she was so powerful and this song will forever be playlist…It’s a heartache is another one
YES!!!!!! Was just going to suggest that. OMG the part that goes "I whip my head to the riiiight" and "the gayest men on earth would call this over the top" make me freakin laugh everytime I see it
"Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler is about vampires. The song was originally titled "Vampires in Love" and was written for a musical based on the 1922 vampire film Nosferatu.
Bonnie's catalogue is incredible and well worth digging deep into. Try: Ravishing, Loving You's a Dirty Job But Somebody's Got to Do It, Rebel Without A Clue, Lovers Again, Before This Night Is Through, Save Up All Your Tears, To Love Somebody, The Best, Streets of Little Italy, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, It's Over, Lost in France, Here She Comes (2004 version), It's A Heartache, This Is Gonna Hurt, Little Superstar, Wild Love, Bridge Over Troubled Water (with Lenny Kravitz), Given It All, Older, Let's Go Crazy Tonight, The Best is Yet to Come, Dreams Are Not Enough, When the Lights Go Down, Have You Ever Seen The Rain?, Faster Than the Speed of Night, Before We Get Any Closer, Wings, I Won't Look Back... every one is phenomenal! 🎹🎸🎵🔥
Written by the late, great Jim Steinman who wrote all of Meatloaf's hits as well as hits for Celine Dion, Taylor Dayne and others. The best composer of theatrical pop/rock.
Thanks for not giving a sh** about the video! Many reactors are just focused at the - for sure - horrible video! But this song and it’s composition, the tremendous vocals and lyrics should be heard, felt and admired for what they impressively the absolute definition of a perfect, I mean PERFECT power ballad!❤ 🎉❤
you surprised me, thought that everyone had heard this song already. haha. nice to watch first time reactions to this one. hugely popular song back in the day. still is.
Jim Steinman who wrote it also wrote “Holding Out for a Hero,” pretty much all of Meatloafs stuff (you’ve liked a lot of his lyrics on other reaction videos) and “Making Love out of Nothing at All” by Air Supply which I think you listened to (and is my favorite song of all time). Also, her voice is husky because she had a major throat surgery as a young country singer. When she thought her career was over before it started, Jim Steinman urged her to lean into her new voice and try rock vocals. The rest…is history.
In the spring of 1977, Tyler underwent an operation to remove vocal cord nodules and was advised by her doctor to rest her voice for six weeks. Tyler screamed in frustration one day, resulting in a permanent raspy tone. In July 1977, Tyler released her fourth single, "Heaven".
Bonnie had a string of hits that got lots of play. Her familiar husky voice was a great change up from most female singers who don't have that kind of rasp.
Okay so. I was looking at one of the recommended videos you got at the end of your Bonnie Tyler, and I think I very much mistook it for a different group, but I'm gonna recommend them anyway because I thought of it lol. Breathe was a group that had a couple of really fantastic late 80s hits: "Hands to Heaven" and "How Can I Fall." I love both of these and remember them well, love to sing 'em except some parts are too low! Curses! The singer is a lower tenor with a beautiful, clear voice. So kind of in the same vein of your angelic fellow(s) here.
God I love that song! Not only does it just sound great in its own right, but the sound of it is just one of those songs that takes me back to a very specific time -- late 90s, starting college, music and friends and all that. Love hearing that chorus.
Bonnie Tyler had some Nodules surgically removed from her vocal cords, but she did not rest her voice for the six weeks prescribed by her Doctor, resulting in the permanent raspiness that gives her voice its unique sound.
According to Wikipedia, she "screamed in frustration one day" and that caused the damage. Crazy to think that one time could potentially ruin your voice, but luckily it worked out for her and she still had a great career!

I was in 7th grade when this song came out. I remember this girl in my class looked similar to Bonnie and I told her that, she looked at me like I was an alien or something. Later that year she said to me that her parents laughed when she told them I said it, then she started talking to me more… but my family moved and I never saw her again. Could've been the one maybe, but who knows.
Jim Steinman wrote and produced this track and the album:Father speed than the night. This track is the best of the album, but too long for the radios, total eclipse was released in short format at the time for the radios. Before the record companies put pressure on 3.30/4 minute formats.
Rory Dodd is the GOAT in my book. Here he is in his full glory with Jim Steinman on piano for the demo for Making Love Out Of Nothing At All... With extra lyrics! Another Jim written masterpiece. This is THE BEST version of this song! ua-cam.com/video/JRkFbgEbjWg/v-deo.htmlsi=0diQuAh_aDDi-z9E
I’m starting to watch some of the songs you review for the extra adrenaline charge I get - it’s akin to the first time they penetrated my consciousness: Doesn’t matter if it’s a crossover country star or the first rap song where “punk meets street” - its the stuff that gives you that “sshusszshz” and fires off endorphins! Am I wrong Gen X? We hope, I think, some of the most innovative and unusual experiments in music at the time came from these roots. We relied on underground recordings at that time too …
You watch a lot of Brit music. I’ve seen many videos were people are shocked the singer/actor is British & not American. I was shocked one UA-camr thought Any Winehouse was American 🤦♀️ smh. I think you should watch Raye she’s an amazing singer from London. She’s fab x
LOVE this song - but HATE that the official video doesn't include the THIRD verse. The radio versions don't include it either - ONLY the shortened version. The song is fantastic - but so much BETTER with the last verse included.
Googled the Background singers name several times and forget his name again and again. Maybe because I was forced by some girls in Karaoke-Bars to do his part. Far away from his quality but safe at the Timing. Sucks after a year or two. Believe me.
Great song one of my favourites but gee if you did that video with a male lead singer and you swapped the schoolboys for schoolgirls? Well they wouldn't do it would they haha

It's a heartache, Holding out for a hero.
oh yes!
definitely
ANYONE over 45ish knows this song. Extremely popular. Dominated the radio for a many years.
Well I’m a hell of a lot younger than 45ish I was born in the 90s and I was brought up listening to old time songs like this 1
Dude, I just love your reactions. You feel the music and it shows. ❤❤❤
I agree man
The most beautiful and powerful song of the 80s...
And it's about vampires! (Originally written for a musical based on Nosferatu)
Didn't know that
One of the best songs of the 80's!!
Yeah, I remember watching it on MTV ( when it was MTV ). Love her voice. I remember watching her and Kim Carnes “Betty Davis Eyes”
‘
"I'm living in a powder keg and throwing off sparks" is one of my all time favorite lines.
Truth.
giving off sparks*

When that "husk" comes out when she's belting, it really gives me goose bumps man. I love it
This song is simply epic! And it goes hard at karaoke, any time, any where. The entire place will be singing their asses off, guaranteed.
Yeah, she’s like the Rod Stewart of female voices
A wonderful Welsh songstress, great husky voice.
I KNEW you would appreciate this one. Great song. Bonnie’s best IMO.

one of the best voices ever
Omg this song is so good... I was 6 years old when this song was new.. First time was watch in early 90s on Mtv😊😊😊
Her voice 😍
This album was all written by Jim Steinman, the same guy that wrote both Bat Out Of Hell albums for Meatloaf. He's a genius.
Absolute classic! My favorite by her is Holding Out for a Hero

Ha!
I ironically put this cd in my car cd deck at 4 o’clock this morning!
She’s so cool and unique!
This one was a huge smash hit, such a dramatic tune - like most everything Steinman ever wrote!
Absolutely 🔥
Its A Heartache is worth a reaction
A great song, love her voice, thanks Shon
Bonnie Tyler had nodules on her vocal chords and had an operation to remove them, but the side effect was the raspy tone that you hear.
The older brother of the guy who sings the "turn around" bit was the voice of Wolverine in the 90's x-men cartoon.
Objectively, one of the best songs ever written and performed.
My number 1 love song.
I forgot about this video. 🙈😂
But great song, great Singer!
Great song. Been there. ❤❤❤
I love her cover of Making Love out of Nothing at All by Air Supply!

She has a way of ripping your heart out. If you can't feel it you don't have a heart 😢
Rory Dodd is the male singer. Bonnie Tyler is her stage name. her real name is Gaynor Hopkins? um ok no wonder people choose stage names.
Make your next song Bonnie Tyler “it’s a heartache”. Her raspy voice is off the hook w this song. YOU WIL NOT HE DISAPPOINTED!
🔥🔥🔥
You should check out Taylor Dane's version of Steinman's song "Original Sin". She knows how to belt it out, and it fits Steinman's style perfectly.
