Well, Koa, to be fair, as long as guys like you, JOB, and all the other pros keep putting out these awesome surf videos, people are gonna get attracted to what you show, and they're going to naturally want to visit Oahu and the north shore. So it's kinda a catch 22. You got nearly 150K UA-cam subscribers, they "like" your videos, they comment, and they buy your merch. Now Jamie's got, what? Probably close to 900K subscribers by now? So between you and him alone, that's nearly one million subscribers. So that's good for your business and your career. But the other side of having so many fans is that it's only natural that a good number of them are actually gonna make the trip out to the north shore, crowding the roads and the beaches (but also bringing business to the north shore shops/restaurants). Unfortunately, many are also going to overestimate their ability to handle such waves because guys like you and Jamie make surfing look so dang easy and fun, when, in reality, to the average person out there, it's straight up life-threatening to paddle into those waves.
You’re exactly right . Ya can’t have it both ways . There is an excellent video of some grom who did exactly this - visited Pipe from Wisconsin , and shows himself almost drowning in white water As an AA Captain I spent 15 years flying LAX to Hawaii Many times going up to North Shore to boogie board Nothing but respect for locals
I'm an old bloke in the UK. Used to surf a bit back in the 70's and 80's and watch a lot of these kind of vids, but this bloke has something about him and the combination of his relaxed style of delivery, the videographers style just makes for some of the best content. Top work.
Dude, loved the background story about all the kooks and wannabes that come out there. Def puts things in perspective. Esp since I am basically an old version of those dudes. 😂
I don’t know why this guy gets so much hate everywhere. So many comments on so many channels. This was my first watch of his vids, seems like a chill-but-super-knowledgeable guy. I don’t think he’s hating on the fact that surfing is more popular than ever before and places all over the globe are getting more and more packed. It can be frustrating when there are way too many surfers competing for waves, whether they’re “local” or not (I use quotes bc There is a ton of privilege in being born on the North Shore if you’re not a native Hawaiian and let’s not pretend there isn’t). But the big takeaway from this video is that you don’t want to go try a wave like pipe or backdoor during prime season when you’re new to surfing-or even if you’re used to riding 3-5 footers in Cali or on The Great Lakes. There is a massive difference in ability when it comes to these waves in particular. And if you’re out of your element, it can quickly become a very deadly situation for everyone involved. I think he’s just saying “know your skill level, folks.” There are tons of more beginner, intermediate, and advanced breaks all over the island that are fun as hell, too.
Koa , one of the best all time tube riders . I lived on the North Shore from 1972 -77. Normally there were 3-5 guys out at a peak, often just my friends and I had it to ourselves. There were Zero women surfers, only Papaya Patti riding her Boogie Board . Sure Pipeline, Sunset, Laniakea would get crowded, but the other spots were often nearly empty.
I am 50 and love the North Shore but definitely you need to know your limits. I am happy to sit down or find smaller spots. By the way I met Koa during a spot check at Rocky last year super nice guy. Keep the great work
Just gotta say Koa, I get what you mean in your monologue in the beginning. I’m from, grew up, and still live in a little mountain town in Colorado and it’s the same way. I get it. It’s a real balance with tourism and locals, and just the incredible spiritual energy of a place on the planet that’s so amazing.
Where at? I'm in Nederland. Used to live in Crested Butte. For us, my whole perspective shifted during Covid. There was and still is such a "better than thou" feeling from so many of us locals, until their business shuts the doors and they're posting all over social media begging to come spend time in our towns because they can't support themselves, their families, or their business anymore. Outside of the negative parts that comes from tourism, I've come to find there are also so many positives that we seem to undervalue or forget entirely. My work personally has been very stable and I'm lucky to have been working completely remote for the past decade with my office in Denver, but that would not be the case had the economy not been absolutely thriving due to the transplants and tourist dollars constantly flowing in more year by year and allowing residents to put food on their tables. I'd take a booming economy and stability, and ability to find a climbing or backcountry ski partner over the increase of ski traffic. Overall, I'd also say the respect for the environment is still held in high regard for so many visitors and natives alike. The most trash dumping and poor choices I've seen firsthand are from the locals themselves that feel entitled to dump anything where they please. But everybody loves to call their lines on a map their own and bash anybody else for wanting to experience the beauty of our state. I'm somewhere in between, but it will get out of hand at some point.
I get it too! From a tiny, sleepy fishing/shrimping town that I finally had to abandon because of all the mad development and tourism! Jimmy Buffett wrote a song called "When the Coast is Clear" about that little town on the Gulf Coast. If you've never heard it, check it out!
Koa, you are of about the same size as me on YT (if that means anything) and if I could offer a suggestion from my journey..... Do everything you can to be more relatable rather than exclusive. Your intro put yourself in a category you dont want to be in. It was tough to listen to. Speak with gratitude for what you have been given and let your surfing do the talking. Pyzel sells boards to the guy who cant make it at pipe. I wouldnt disparage his clients..... keep ripping. -Tim
Awesome vid Koa. Starting with the sounds of waxing, no wind... THUNDERING surf... and the breakdown of reality on NS Oahu. Chills. Its interesting how NS surfers checking it out from shore, zero in on every wave that rolls in.
Your spawn point has to be one of the best in the world, Koa. You can't blame the tourists but also wish you could keep it all to yourself, it's a weird spot to be in. But you've got a good head on your shoulders and put your privilege to great use. Thanks for the vlogs and for sharing your bit of paradise with us guys
Koa learned by watching his big brother say aloha then stink eye when they turn the back. He’s much better at hiding it ....Or he is humbled by how many people hate on his family and is really this nice guy we see in these vlogs! I wonder
Nah he’s right, if you don’t have the level to surf Pipe you shouldn’t be there simple as that, they endanger themselves and the other surfers in the lineup
sure, whatever. I dont know him personally. All I know is you shouldnt surf somewhere outside of your ability, and locals dont have a right to every wave because they were born there. Respect where respect is due
Been subscribed for a few years. Gotta say. That was one of the most entertaining drops you guys have done. Keep up the good work. Here's to a great season on the north shore.
I have a better chance of hanging with you at the shack than trying to surf pipe. I watch the Hawaiians vlogs cause I need not to jump on a plane and get stuck to piss the locals off Thank you guys for putting such good content You guys are truly blessed
Heading down to the Northshore with my wife on Friday. Would never paddle out because it's way out of my league. Would love to watch the locals do their thing out there though.
Awesome ride at 9:19, you got up to 7th gear, dropped the hammer back into 4th and slammed back into top speed for that final section. Looked spooky how the wave grabbed your board there, stay safe keep shreddin!!!
Bruh Kauai get turo homeless vans with visiting surfers in em posted up in the parking lot for winter, while locals are truly homeless and getting harassed while the tourists get no trouble. Can we change this together 🥋
Growing up in So Cal our waves vs North Shore. I learned my skill level quickly. Having family & friends in Hawaii I was taught the right way & had to earn my spot in the lineup on trips in 80-90’s. Even had to show I could take a punch & sit down with a beer after. Still friends with the guy, he’s living on the 9th island working at TI.
I could never. I think thats pathetic and degrading for you to submit yourself to the ego of one of the locals and take a punch and continue meatriding unless you did something to truly deserve being punched. If not than that is absolutely pathetic
Yeah you know what? I'm ok with never riding Pipe, I get plenty of good waves anyway an am happy. I definitely want to come and see the mayhem that is that lineup though. So keen!
I couldn’t even imagine growing up in paradise. It comes with its own set of problems. But they live in a place that 80% of the US wishes they could vacation to once, when we were kids, if we were lucky.

Audio indeed. A waitress friend i used to know from Childhood used to put her feet up at the end of her day shift ( about 2 pm every day she was done on her feet ) and she described to me her opinions of what is relaxing. Some soundtracks of waxing and boards knocking together. As well as the crash of surf aerating through the shore break. If you do make soundtracks, do you. Its great. People dont always want tibetan bells alone, add some familiar sounds, of work .. its a niche but, you know.
Bra! That’s so ironic brah. I am coming to north shore in 2 weeks for 3 months bra. I saw you at Malibu first point(where I’m da supa loc bra) on that legendary day. You called me a kook. Well, in my day, we would read Surfer magazine and DREAM of going to North Shore and surfing Pipe and all the other spots. Some folks, intermediate surfers, say F it--- I'm all in, baby!! Jump on a plane, head out, warm up for a month or so, then think they are ready for the most dangerous break in the world. Nope. To be fair, I think most of us, at some point, have over-estimated our abilities and paddled out, when well......we shouldn't have. We are just at an over-sized break on the east coast, not NS. Amazing place, use to stay at rock piles a few times a year, never surfed but loved watching. That dream is gone unless you want to stay at Turtle bay, Its sucks but I get it, fun while it lasted.
Koa no worries with your Family History you get pure respect forever your cemented in Hawaiian Heritage I also think it's a tragedy so many kook's would come all at the same time litter bug's
Yeah dad is a haole from Philadelphia who came to Hawaii and terrorized the community for years, dealing coke, kidnapping charges, prosecutors on Oahu said he "held the North Shore in a state of feudalism" for years. What an awesome way to respect the island as an outsider.
9:30 the commentary has me dead LMFAO "HE WANTS MORE!!!! HE GOT MORE!!!"
"He wants more!!!! Oh!! He got more!!!" Best line of the edit 🤣
Alright big guy, I’m coming. You, me, an Airbnb, pipe and backdoor…

I’m 71 and got to surf everywhere on the North Shore for two years then went to outer islands. It was fun I had great parents.
Dude, loved the background story about all the kooks and wannabes that come out there.

Man these are sick videos. Love the music choice and the fact you can hear the waves in the background. The surfing was pretty good too I guess 😉
Heading down to the Northshore with my wife on Friday. Would never paddle out because it's way out of my league. Would love to watch the locals do their thing out there though.
That’s the key know your limits, I normally go on declining swells or average days 😉
Or just surf a “shitty” reef that is beneath the locals skill level and then spend the rest of the day watching! That’s what I’d do
Monologue was all good, didn't think you were hating. Just genuine
Nice sets 😊 sick barrels & great tunes 😊
Hey Koa. I’ve surfed ankle high waves in NJ a few times. I’m going to head to the North Shore and take you up on your offer….
I feel like you‘re ready to make the transition.😂
It's all the people that support and watch your vlog that want to LIVE da life too!

yo Koa what is realistically happening to the guy at 5:30 ... is he getting smacked along the reef for 15 seconds or is he able to avoid the reef?
