I went back and looked at some of your videos with the beginning pieces from this kiln...it sure has been a wonderful journey. Loving the documenting behind the life of this kiln...your pieces have remained beautiful and ever changing!

Great insight into the reduction process. Less gas is More air - allowing the fuel to burn in the kiln rather then up the chimney. We have a really big kiln with two forced air blowers. It's a balancing act to get it into reduction and keep the temp climbing. Typical firings are 12 hours. You do beautiful work!

Thanks for the tip on burners,. I think that is why I have trouble.

Too much gas. Years back a teenager had built a kiln up the street from my parent's. When he put it into reduction he had neighbors standing in the street, watching the flames above the roof tops and wonder where the chimney fire was. I wandered up the hill and suggested it was a bit much gas but being 17 he said it was fine, thankyou...

Thanks for the great reminder. I did the same thing after gambling on my first kiln load of shino. I learned too that you don't put all your eggs in one basket until you really know your kiln.

Hi its a propane gas kiln adapted to accept wood at cone 10... the 900c reduction idea is good but at that temperature it makes too much smoke and I live in a smoke free zone and the local council are very keen on enforcing it. the wood at cone 10 works well on my shino's

Hope that works on my kiln, it will climb to 800c no problem then takes hour's to get to 950c. (Thats the hottest it's got) I had all taps wide open and couldnt work out why there was no rise in temp, will try less next time, thanks for the heads up steve.
    Ps, that's what I call a kiln.

the key is to watch the flame coming out of the kiln chimney open up the burners until you see a strong flame then back them off until the flame just disappears.. good luck!!

Hi, I'm just wondering why your title is gas wood firing ? But your using propane gas, anyway, I've done a few reduction firing before and what I did was less air on the burners specially at around 900 and chimney fully open, an introduction of wood at that temp will help in the reduction process. I hop may suggestions help..

Your burner was designed in the 1890's. Please do your self a favour and research modern gas burners. At least burners designed in the 1960's fed by turbines.
