when you start to acquire a guitar collection, the guitars start to become part of your own fabric. every time I start to get drawn to a new guitar I always say, if I want to get a new one, I have to sell al old one, and then I never do. so my guitar collection just keeps growing. The few times I have let a guitar go, I have always opted for the easy way (consignment or trade-in). Probably leaving money on the table but my attention is usually so focused on the excitement of the new guitar, that I don't fret about getting a little less for the guitar I let go.

Important information to know when you are guitar shopping.
When I started practicing law, I learned a phrase that stuck with me: the other guy has to eat. Not just the litigant - the lawyer too.
So if I am buying, I need to make sure that the other guy gets to eat. How much is the shop in for for that guitar? If they bought for $500, that doesn't mean that they are only in for $500. They have rent, payroll, insurance, and electricity. Not to mention the fact that the shop probably wants to turn a profit.
If it's a consignment piece, there is going to be a hard floor that they just can't go below. Because the owner is only getting about 75% of that price.
If you keep in mind that the shop "has to eat," you can adjust your expectations accordingly.

I think it’s funny that Baxter has no frame of reference for what a Buccee’s is. Being from Texas I’ve seen way too many people traveling through that are like “what the hell is this place??” “Why is this place so big and have 120 gas pumps??”

I experienced one for the first time a few months ago. It’s not impressive because of what is available to buy at a gas station but because of how big it is! When gas isn’t a thing anymore future historians will be perplexed like we are about the pyramids

I am so old. As a kid, Shakey’s Pizza had a rinky tink pianist and banjo player. I still have a solid wood Silvertone acoustic with a painted on pick guard. It came via sleigh from the North Pole in ‘67! Still plays well, sounds decent, and holds tune fair.

This reminds me of the wise words of Han Lue from Tokyo Drift.
“10% of something is better than 100% of nothing.”
But seriously, consignment has worked out great for me. Not dealing with the sale is amazing and everything I have consigned…consigned?…co-signed?…has sold within a couple days.

I was at Music Go Round in Minneapolis when it started. Their policy was you can have 100% of the sale IF, IF... you spent the money on gear in the store. That was a huge success and they out drew everybody in town (4 million pop). Including St. Paul & suburbs. And they grew. Then changed to 35%.

I've tried consigning a guitar in my local shop, but it was Steel National Resonator and it wasn't budging off the hook. Further the shop did not want to consider a trade for the very same reason that there was not much of a resonator fan base in this smallish mid-western town... Instead, I sent photos and description to Dave's Guitars, a national/global dealer 3 hours away from me... they cut a deal on either a trade or straight cash... I drove over and bought a new guitar on the trade and was delighted... I don't have the patience for consignment (unless it's a pedal) and generally go for the trade. I've never looked back...

30%-40% seems about right considering that's what most dealers make off MAP on new equipment (give or take). A shop has no motivation (and with good reason) to make less money off an individual's guitar when they could sell a potential customer something that brings cash flow back into their business to get more inventory.

I tend to hang on to stuff, but I’m in agreement with Jon re avoiding hassle! Leave it to the pros. I’d sell privately if it was to someone I knew who’s been after one of my guitars- maybe. Seems everything needs to be bigger in Tx- good concept- $40 regular and that Tele please! Btw, don’t think Tyler is too dim- he’s involved with one of those Larkin Poe girls, also pretty and talented. Great video guys

A lot of folks say you get more money from reverb or just selling on your own. I'd rather have a shop do it for me especially if they take care of any packing for shipping and all that. I don't like the hassle of having to pack stuff up and ship it myself.

A view from the UK. Shops are there to make money, it pays the wages of the people who work there and it’s the reason they exist. . If you don’t like the rates then don’t use them. We all have the choice. My local store is at 30 %, seems fair to me.

20% has been the average Lower end Rate for years, and reason to Sell, is Exposure to More Buyers, Ability to accept Credit Cards, No Customer Returns for you to worry about once paid, Someone that Markets to Audience you are looking for and that can Add Value in your instrument to Customer considering purchasing it and Lastly No Hassles, Rip Offs and a Faster Return instead of spending months on Craigslist, most times a Storefront can move that guitar a lot Faster. Plus a Storefront might tell you its under priced at your asking price

The shop will only give you about 60% of expected sale value if they buy it from you, so you'll probably do a little better with consignment. But if they buy it from you, you can probably negotiate a discount on something new (essentially making it a trade in). Given how new prices are going up, the used market should stay strong, so I'd give selling it local via CL/FB/etc a shot first if you can handle the BS emails and whatnot. Local avoids shipping as well as buyers bitching that the condition doesn't match the description. I can't be bothered with online sales (reverb, ebay, etc.).

It’s a weird dynamic because people who sell privately tend to grossly overvalue their stuff 90% of the time. But at the same time about 60% of guitar shops will pay pennies on the dollar for stuff you bring them. I just realized I sound like a huge hypocrite to myself because if I by something from a private seller or an estate sale, I won’t buy unless I get it for at least 40% less than what they cost new. Lol. Showbiz Pizza was a staple of my childhood, especially cause our local one had Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles AND Simpsons the arcade games. I used to spend all my tickets as a kid on those cheap plastic spider rings and introduce myself as “The Spider King” to all the other kids

I regret selling my 2017 Gibson SG standard in alpine white with a tear drop guard. After the consignment I got $1000 and the shop made $300. I told the shop if I don't get $1000 i won't consign it. Well I got it. I was just trying to free up funds for the 1961 les paul jr I had just gotten a loan for to just pay off as quickly as possible. This was of course before the guitar price hikes and shit so ypu know. I could probably get 2 grand for it now days. I keep all my guitar boxes and have shipped them before so thats easy. It's the guitar I let get away. Ps. I would never do a consignment again.

Guys I have the original Taylor box and the big box that the Taylor box goes inside. Plus the guitar is in the nice hard case from Taylor. Should be protected right? Like it’s all ready to go so the shilling should be ok right? I have a 324ce brand new almost maybe a slight mRk in the luck guard but no scratches on the guitar anywhere or imperfections. It’s six months old and all. I am to nervous to do it in person now because there’s just sooooo many scammers on FB and Craig’s list. Is reverb my best bet?
